2 WEDDING PLANNER & GUIDE

PHOTO: THE WEDDING FLASHERS

With family and friends traveling half way around the world to attend their festive, fashionable fusion wedding, Molly and Bobby called upon our culinar y team to prepare a pageant of authentic flavors flowing from open-air Rooftop ceremony to bedecked Ballroom dinner. After the groom arrived on a white horse, of course.

6 WEDDING PLANNER & GUIDE

Congratulations! This planning guide, along with wedplan.com and our various social media platforms, is full of information and inspiration to help you plan the wedding of your dreams. The worksheets and checklists, later in this guide and online, will help you stay organized and on track for your big day. Happy planning!

GETTING STARTED SET A DATE! You’re engaged, woohoo! It's time to set the date and get started! The sooner you get going, the more options you will have in ceremony locations, reception venues, and other popular vendors, who often book a year or more in advance. Think about the seasons, weather, holidays, and other area events to assure no surprises later. Consider non-peak months or off-days, if you are looking to save money or just for a fun alternative to the traditional Saturday wedding! VISION & BUDGET Discuss the vision for your wedding, and an estimated budget that could realistically make your vision a reality. • What is most important to you as a couple? • How much will you spend? • Where are you willing to bend? • Who’s paying for what? STAY ORGANIZED Create a binder, digital folder, and inspiration board to keep your ideas and plans organized. • Vendor Contacts • Checklists • Contracts & Receipts • Color Palette • Photos

Budget & Expense sheets can be found in the worksheet section of this publication and online at wedplan.com

WEDDING WEBSITE & EMAIL Create a personalized wedding website, and an email account specifically for wedding correspondence. • A variety of wedding website platforms can be found online. • Check out the new wedplan app for direct local vendor connections. • Things to include on your wedding website: wedding’s location, where to stay and what else to do in town, wedding timeline, photos of you and your partner, preferred wedding attire, and your registry information. WEDPLAN.COM 7

WORK WITH PROFESSIONALS A wedding is probably the largest party you will ever throw. Wedding vendors are there to help you plan and enhance your vision through their expertise, creativity, relationships with other vendors, and their overall knowledge of the wedding industry. Less stress can be priceless, so invest in quality wedding professionals for one of the most important days of your life. COMPARE VENDORS

You can compare vendors in this guide, on wedplan.com, wedplanapp.com, at our wedding shows, their own websites, reviews, and through personal consultations.

• Schedule appointments • Share vision & seek advice • Establish relationships • Get contracts • Consider quality & personality over price WEDDING PLANNERS | EVENT DESIGNERS

The best money ever spent, often claimed by past couples, is the wedding planner! Planners and event designers can help with organizing the details, overall design, or a combination of services. Consider a one-on-one consultation to get you started with initial plans, day-of wedding coordination to see that things run smoothly, or choose to hire someone to help enhance your ideas and fully execute all details and design. A planner will help create a seamless and stunning event. They have the knowledge, expertise, resources, and tools that can save you time, money, and stress in dealing with situations that will arise during the planning process and at the actual event. When you work with a planner, you do not have to give up your creativity. Let them help you to build on those ideas to make your vision a reality.

38 WEDDING PLANNER & GUIDE

PHOTO: TWIG & OLIVE PHOTOGRAPHY

It's your special day, so the look and style of your wedding attire are entirely up to you. Whether you stay traditional or show your own unique, individual style, the options are endless for your wedding day fashions. From a cohesive look throughout the wedding party, mix and match or textures and prints; decide what is right for the look and feel you desire. No matter what you choose, we highly encourage shopping with reputable area shops to assure you get quality products and services, the right fit, and on-time for your wedding affair.

GOWN TIPS Sometimes a gown may not look good on the rack but will look stunning on you! So, have your ideas in mind, but also be open to trusting the advice of the bridal shop professionals as to what could look good on you! Here are some tips to consider:

STYLE CONSIDERATIONS

TIMING

AMPLE WAIST: Consider an empire waistline.

AFTER ENGAGEMENT: Start shopping for wedding dress and bridesmaids dresses.

SHORT WAIST: Consider a princess-style dress. LONG WAIST: Consider a high waistline. GENEROUS HIPS: Try a full, not poufy, skirt. Avoid adding anything to the skirt, like ruffles and bows. PETITE BUST: Dress with jewel, bateau, Sabrina, or square necklines. Accent your chest with gowns that are pleated or ruffled across the bust. Opt for intricate detailing with beads or embroidery along the bustline. Remember to steer clear of dresses that cannot be worn with the type of bra you need, such as a push-up. GENEROUS BUST: Dress in a simple bodice. Stay away from beads, embroidery, lace, and sequins. You have quite a bit of versatility in the type of bustline you wear. Square, strapless, scoop, sweetheart, V-shaped, Queen Anne, and off-the-shoulder all are great, but steer clear of high necklines such as jewel, bateau, portrait, and halter tops. Balance your proportions with an eye-catching skirt. TALL: Dress with horizontal lines to break up your height, such as strapless dresses, sashed waistlines, and various-length skirting layers. Steer clear of long fluid lines, such as sheath style dresses. Halters are very flattering on taller people, especially if you have strong shoulders. FULL ARMS: Try a dress with three-quarter or full-length sleeves. Steer clear of capped sleeves and strapless dresses, which tend to accentuate the arms.

6-12 MONTHS BEFORE: Order dress, undergarments and accessories. 6-9 MONTHS BEFORE: Order bridesmaids dresses. Select and order mothers dresses. 3 MONTHS BEFORE: Begin alterations process for bride and bridesmaids. 8-12 WEEKS BEFORE: First fitting 6-10 WEEKS BEFORE: Fitting check up 2 WEEKS BEFORE: Final fitting 1-3 DAYS BEFORE: Pick up wedding gown, un-bag gown at home after pickup.

FORMALWEAR TIPS Formalwear experts are great at pulling styles together when you share your essential vision. They can help to find a look that matches your taste, as well as coordinate with other wedding day apparel. Here are some things to consider in your search for the right look: • Decide who is wearing a suit, tuxedo, or other special wedding attire; don’t forget the ring bearer, special attendants, parents, or grandparents. • What other apparel do you need to coordinate with? • Decide if you want to rent or buy. There are benefits to both options; ask your formalwear specialist. • Decide on the colors and look: informal, semi-formal, formal, ultra-formal. • Don’t forget accessories, undergarments, and shoes. • Designate someone to return rentals the next business day after the wedding.

40 WEDDING PLANNER & GUIDE

TIMING 8-9 MONTHS BEFORE: Register your wedding. 6 MONTHS BEFORE: Confirm your styles; get measured and place orders. 3 MONTHS BEFORE: Give a gentle reminder to those who haven’t yet been measured. 1 MONTH BEFORE: Check that everyone has been measured. 1 DAY BEFORE: Your final fitting and formalwear pick up THE DAY AFTER: Return the formalwear.

62 WEDDING PLANNER & GUIDE

PHOTO: AZENA PHOTOGRAPHY

On your wedding day, you want to look and feel beautiful, so consider professional services for hair, makeup, diet, exercise, and overall health! Avoid any last-minute plans or quick weight loss remedies, as you want to look your best, yet be yourself. You also don't want any surprises with the fit of your wedding day attire. Consider wedding party hair, makeup, or spa treatments as gifts, or a day at the spa for a fun wedding shower alternative. Here are some essential health and beauty wedding tips for your wedding fête!

TIMING

BEAUTY TIPS

9-12 MONTHS BEFORE:

• Find out how far in advance you will need to book your pre-trial and wedding day hair & makeup.

Book your hair and makeup salon professional to ensure your preferred date and time. 6 MONTHS BEFORE: Implement diet & exercise program. 3-6 WEEKS BEFORE: Do a trial run with hair and makeup. Not only will you preview the look, but also check for allergies and compatibility.

• Find out how many people the salon can accommodate, or do you want someone on-site? • Ask if they have any samples of their work or ideas based on your gown style. • Be sure to choose a hairstyle and makeup that is comfortable for you and matches your personality. • Don't make any drastic changes right before the wedding.

1-2 WEEKS BEFORE:

Haircut and coloring appointment for sun-kissed highlights or a clear color glaze to add shine to your natural hair color (two weeks prior for new stylist; one week prior for a hairstylist with whom you have an ongoing relationship) Eyebrow or body waxing should be done so irritations will have plenty of time to subside. 1 DAY BEFORE: Men may consider returning for a final shampoo and hair trim (beard and mustache included). Get a manicure and pedicure. Polish takes three to four hours to dry completely, so don’t schedule the appointment amidst a flurry of lastminute activities. Instead, after your appointment, go home to get ready for the rehearsal dinner.

70 WEDDING PLANNER & GUIDE

PHOTO: DAVE STREMIKIS PHOTOGRAPHY

Going ring shopping? Buying wedding rings is a crazy exciting time and can also be a considerable expense. Whether ready-to-wear or custom designed, there are so many gorgeous options for metals and gemstones to make your wedding rings uniquely yours. Trust a reputable professional to help you find a metal that works well with your lifestyle and occupation, and gemstones that are the cut, color & clarity you desire. Costs will vary depending on the metals and gemstones chosen, so have a budget in mind and a vision, or pin away some photos of your favorite designs you like for inspiration! You can add special touches and personalization with a unique metal, textured finishes, or custom engraving. Following your nuptials, be sure to continue with basic cleanings and have gemstones checked quarterly for loose or broken settings. Here are a few more tips from wedding jewelers for finding your perfect wedding rings.

TIPS

TIMING

• Discuss with your fiancé if you want matching bands or any other type of personalization.

2 MONTHS BEFORE: Shop for and purchase wedding rings, or decide on ring designs, if choosing custom-made.

• Decide if you want custom designed or ready-to-wear rings. • Always work with a reputable jeweler you can trust. • Ask the jeweler for metal recommendations that are suiting to your job and lifestyle.

1 MONTH BEFORE: Approve or make changes to the 3D prototype, if custom rings, followed by final tweaks. 0-4 WEEKS BEFORE: Pick up rings.

• Have the jeweler explain the cut, color & clarity, so you get the quality of gemstone you desire. • Ask your jeweler about conflict free certification on your gem purchase. • Get tips on cleaning and care, & warranties for replacing stones or the entire ring, in case of loss. • Don't forget to continue getting your settings checked regularly. • Check with your insurance agency to get the rings added to your renters or homeowners policy.

98 WEDDING PLANNER & GUIDE

LK BRIDAL STUDIO

Invitations set the tone for your wedding, giving your guests the very first impression of your wedding day. Stationers have the expertise to help with design concepts, paper selection, printing techniques, wording, and suggestions for other coordinating paper goods. Ordering all paper goods upfront can help save you money, so be sure to consider save-the-dates, programs, menus, place cards, signs, and thank you notes as well!

WHAT TO KNOW

TIMING

• Date and times

9-12 MONTHS BEFORE:

• Ceremony and reception addresses

Begin save the date design concept and compile guests’ addresses.

• Directions • Hotel accommodations • Meal choices (if applicable)

8-11 MONTHS BEFORE: Mail save the dates.

• Hosts (parents, couple, combination)

5-6 MONTHS BEFORE:

• Do you want template styles or a custom design?

Meet the stationer to determine style and color options, place order, and begin proofing process.

• Special graphics, custom artwork, or personalized wording, if desired

3 MONTHS BEFORE:

• Ideas, mood board, color palette

Address wedding invitations.

• Quantity needed (number of guests does not equal number of invitations, as couples and families count as one)

8 WEEKS BEFORE:

• How much postage will be needed? (This will depend on envelope size, weight, and how bulky your invitation is. Don’t forget to purchase and apply the return postage on rsvp card.) • Who will assemble and address the envelopes? • Are you interested in having your envelopes printed with addresses? • Are calligraphy services desired? • How will you keep track of RSVPs?

Mail invitations so people have enough time to make travel arrangements and plan their schedules accordingly, particularly during a busy summer season. 6-8 WEEKS BEFORE: Decide on programs, menus, escort cards, favors, and any other signage or day-of accessories. 3-4 WEEKS BEFORE: Finalize orders for programs and day-of wedding accessories. AFTER THE WEDDING:

See the worksheet section in this guide for stationery wording samples and a checklist of stationery items.

Send thank you cards in a timely manner, giving special thanks to those who were special attendants and for those who traveled to celebrate your day.

REGISTRY

GIFT GIVING

Your guests won't want to arrive at your wedding empty-handed, so setting up a wedding registry is incredibly important during the wedding planning process. That's why we're breaking down traditional and non-traditional wedding registry options you can set up!

Give thoughtful gifts to family and friends who put time, money, and effort into making your wedding special. You can present the gifts at a luncheon, the rehearsal dinner, or in private. Here are a few ideas to consider, but the options are endless and can be personalized for each individual or matching gifts for all involved.

REGISTRY TIPS • The more you register for, the less chance of duplicate items. • You want to give guests plenty of time to purchase gifts, but don’t register too early as some items may go out of stock. • Don’t discard gift receipts, in case you need to return items. • It has become very common to include registry information on the shower invites as well as the wedding invite. Do so tastefully, in a subtle line of information that does not over power the important information and design. • Today’s wedding websites make for an opportunity to give registry information and links. The choice is yours.

REGISTRY OPTIONS LOCAL: Besides helping your local economy, local stores often carry specialty products not found in national chains. NATIONAL: Out-of-town guests appreciate the convenience of shopping at a store nearby or online. Consider registering at more than one store, offering a variety of price points. ALTERNATIVE: If you and your future spouse feel you have everything you need for your home, consider other registry ideas such as wine subscription, meal kit delivery, home building, and honeymoon funds. CHARITY: Ask your guests to donate to your favorite charity in lieu of gifts.

PARENTS: Wine club membership, Bed & Breakfast stay, restaurant gift cards, collection of photos from the wedding, or a framed print. MAID OF HONOR: The gift you give your maid of honor should reflect the starring role she's played in your life. If you decide on a wedding classic like jewelry or a silver compact, personalize the gift with her name or perhaps a phrase or joke meaningful to your relationship. BEST MAN: Dream up something creative like a day at the golf course, or consider a tried-and-true gift, like a personalized pocket watch or pen. WEDDING PARTY: Jewelry, cuff links, spa treatments, flasks or mugs, clutch purses, a round of golf, cigars, microbrew of the month, specialty soaps, travel bag, tickets to game or event, wristwatch, smart gadgets, themed gift basket, or personalized photo book chronicling your friendship. SHOWER HOSTS: Flower arrangement, potted plant, a box of chocolates, jewelry, specialty soaps, a bottle of wine, a box of cookies or cupcakes. CLOSE FRIENDS AND WEDDING HELPERS: Candlelighters, readers and guest book attendants tend to either be close friends (that aren't in your wedding party) or younger cousins, nieces or nephews. If you're close to your officiant, or you have a friend playing guitar for the ceremony, get something for them as well. A book, nice bottle of wine or a small piece of jewelry are all viable choices for anyone who's playing a special part in your day.

ceremony

116 WEDDING PLANNER & GUIDE

PHOTO: PHOENIX & ROSE PHOTOGRAPHY CO.

It's ceremony planning time! A.K.A. the very beginning moment of your newly married life. Whether you choose a house of worship or an outdoor setting, from the backyard to the beach, there are a wide variety of venues in this area and beyond. Make this union uniquely you, whether you choose the traditions and formalities of your religion or culture or add in your style, beliefs, and any desired personal touches that speak to who you are as a couple. Let your personalities shine!

WHAT TO KNOW AND ASK • Capacity? • Rental fee and what’s included? • Who sets up the chairs? • Are changing areas available? • How many weddings do they schedule per day? • Do they have pictures of other weddings set up? • Any restrictions, such as decor, vows & readings, photos & videos? • Any expected remodels or renovations before the wedding?

Consider an Unplugged Wedding, where you can creatively post a request for friends and family to turn off cell phones and cameras, and live in the moment and enjoy your ceremony.

• On-site coordinator present day-of? • Space and electrical outlets for musicians or sound system for recorded music? • Is a sound system and microphones on-site or is an outside company needed? Fees? • Who controls the sound system? • Parking and handicap accessibility? • Restrooms? • Alternate options for outdoor weddings, in case of bad weather? • Insect population if outdoors, and suggestions for control? • Any rentals needed or outside sources?

TIMING 6-18 MONTHS BEFORE: Tour and book your venue. 1 MONTH BEFORE: Have final appointment with site coordinator to solidify final plans. 1 WEEK BEFORE: Check in to inform of any last minute details.

THE OPTIONS VOWS: These can be traditional or personally written by the couple, depending on your wishes and any restrictions the officiant may have. READINGS: These can be Bible verses, poems, stories, or something personally written. Check with your officiant on any restrictions; otherwise, personalize as you wish. UNITY: Candle lighting, sand mixing, tree planting, canvas painting, knot tying, puzzle pieces — there are so many cute ideas out there. Make it unique and personal for you as a couple or your new family. IN MEMORY: Many couples think of ways to honor those who have passed, with such ideas as an empty chair with a photo or signage, pictures, candle lighting, a memento added to the bouquet, special flowers, or add anything personal to your story. OFFICIANTS

THE MARRIAGE LICENSE

Planning the wedding ceremony and reception details are large parts and the most fun, of course. Still, one of the other essential tasks, as well, is to make your union legal with both a marriage license and a marriage certificate. Deciding who will officiate your ceremony is another critical decision. An experienced officiant can help you with the planning, the personalization, and setting the tone for the entire ceremony. If you are thinking of not having an officiant or having a friend or family member do the honors, be sure to check state laws and the county clerk's office for rules or guidelines.

WHEN TO APPLY:

WHAT TO KNOW AND ASK • How much do they charge and what is included in the fee? • How many weddings do they do in a day? • What does the officiant wear at the ceremony? • Do they have a specific ceremony structure or any restrictions? • How can you incorporate cultural traditions, or how open are they to your ideas? • Do they have any requirements for pre-marital counseling sessions or religious classes? • Is there a backup officiant in case of emergency?

TIMING AFTER THE VENUE IS SCHEDULED: Book officiant. 3-6 MONTHS BEFORE: Discuss the type of ceremony desired. 1-4 WEEKS BEFORE: Apply for the marriage license. 1 WEEK BEFORE: Check-in with officiant to verify dates, times, etc. DAY OF: Bring license. 118 WEDDING PLANNER & GUIDE

One or both of the parties must reside at least 30 days in the county of application. The license may be used in any of the 72 Wisconsin counties. Out-of-state residents must apply for a license in the county where the ceremony will take place. Apply at least six calendar days before you need the license issued. Once issued, the license is valid for 30 days.

WHERE TO APPLY: County Clerk's Office

REQUIREMENTS:
Over 18 years of age—unless with written consent from guardians Both parties must apply in person at the same time Proof of residency (driver’s license, lease, utility bills, a letter with
postmark over 30 days old) Certified copy of birth certificate (hospital certificate is not a legal document and is not accepted) Photo ID
and social security number Copy of divorce judgment, marriage annulment, or death certificate from most recent marriage Location and date of marriage Officiant name, title, address & phone number Names, with correct spelling for both parents, including middle names and mother’s maiden name A third person to interpret if one or both of the applicants do not speak English License fees vary from county to county, refer to the county clerk's website for most current information

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT: Bring the marriage license to the ceremony. Your officiant fills out the license, the witnesses will sign it, and then the officiant sends it to the Register of Deeds in the county where you were married. The marriage license is processed and becomes the marriage certificate.

120 WEDDING PLANNER & GUIDE

PHOTO: TEMERITY PHOTOGRAPHY

The party of your lifetime, where do you begin? You'll want to have date options in mind and consider your budget, style, and the size of the reception, to help you narrow down the venue choices. From a rustic barn, an elegant tent, your favorite restaurant, or winery to a sparkling lakefront or a glam ballroom, decide what ambiance you desire on your wedding day! Here are some tips, a timeline, and questions to ask during your first venue tours before deciding on the final space of your choice.

WHAT TO KNOW AND ASK • Know your vision for the reception: venue type, photo inspiration, and ideas. • Know date options, and if any other events are happening locally, that may affect that choice. • Know your estimated guest count.

• Consider special seating for the couple, wedding party & their spouses, parents, and guests. (Sweetheart table, head table, king’s table, unique table patterns throughout) • Do they have a suggested timeline? (Cocktails, dinner, toasts, dance)

• Have an approximate budget in mind. Be sure it is realistic based on your venue choice, menu options, and guest count.

• Is any transportation needed, especially for elderly or disabled, if there is a distance from ceremony area to reception area?

• Can you get a tour of the venue? Bring those who are part of the decision making.

• Are guest rooms on-site or nearby, and is a shuttle service available?

• Capacity?

• Any expected remodels or renovations before the wedding?

• Rental fee and what’s included?

• On-site coordinator present day-of?

• Is there a charge for any extra services such as cake cutting, or alcohol service?

• Space and electrical outlets for musicians, lighting, or extra reception entertainment?

• Any restrictions, like outside catering, use of candles or other decorations, or what can and cannot be brought on-premises?

• Is there an in-house sound system or other AV services, microphone for speeches?

• Do they offer any discounts for off-season or off-days?

• Restrooms?

• Is catering and bar service on-site or are outside vendors needed? • What is wait staff attire? • Are changing areas available or private place to freshen up? • How many weddings do they schedule per day? • Is heating, air conditioning or fans available for barn weddings or tented events? • Do they have pictures of other receptions set up? • What is your vision for table shapes, sizes, and set-ups? • Do they provide the floor plan to plan seating arrangements? • What time can you set up, and when do you need to tear down?

• Parking and handicap accessibility? • Alternate options for outdoor weddings, in case of bad weather? • Insect population, if outdoors, and suggestions for control? • Any rentals needed or outside sources, such as tables, chairs, linens, table settings, dance floor, lighting?

TIMING 12-18 MONTHS BEFORE: Tour & book your venue. 1 MONTH BEFORE: Have final appointment with the site coordinator to solidify final plans. 1 WEEK BEFORE: Contact the site coordinator to verify final details. WEDPLAN.COM 121

RECEPTION FOOD OPTIONS

PRE-DANCE RECEPTION TIMELINE

Trust your reception fare to the venue or a professional caterer, as they will have the expertise to know how much food to prepare and will have the proper equipment. You don’t want any added stress for the couple, friends or family members who may try to volunteer for this vast undertaking.

COCKTAILS - 1 HOUR: Depending on the logistics of your wedding, cocktail hour begins immediately following the ceremony if your event is at the same venue, or add the travel time needed to reach the reception.

PLATED: The most formal reception choice, guests are seated, typically at a designated table, and served a plated meal. Entrée options are provided on the response card. Menu cards are often part of the table décor.

GRAND ENTRANCE - 10 MINUTES: The newlyweds are formally introduced to wedding guests. Some couples opt to precede their entrance with an introduction of wedding party members.

BUFFET: Guests can choose their seats and make their way through a buffet line when their table is called. Compare options to decide what is best for your budget and the ambiance of your event.

FIRST DANCE - 5 MINUTES: Keep the energy high by transitioning straight into your first dance with your bride or groom. You can choose to dance for a full song or ask your band or DJ to fade out about two minutes in.

FAMILY-STYLE: Table arrangements can be designated in advance, or guests can choose seats upon their arrival. Food is placed on the table in large serving dishes for the guests to serve themselves.

WELCOME TOASTS - 5 MINUTES: A family member, often the parents of the couple, typically offer a wedding reception welcome toast, thanking guests and inviting everyone to enjoy the meal.

COCKTAILS & HORS D’OEUVRES: This can be elegant and trendy. It's best to add this to the evening festivities before the main meal. Choosing this offers an opportunity to mingle with your guests, or it can keep guests busy while the couple is off taking photos. If you choose to only offer hors d'oeuvres without a full meal, be sure to make it clear on your invitation so guests know what to expect. 122 WEDDING PLANNER & GUIDE

INVITATION TO DINNER - 15 MINUTES: Guests are invited to take their seats for dinner.

DINNER - 45 MINUTES: Typically dinner will last about 45 minutes, depending on the meal-service style you choose. WEDDING PARTY TOASTS - 10 MINUTES: In between courses, wedding-party members are usually invited to say a few words. CAKE CUTTING - 10 MINUTES: This tasty event can be after the first dance if the cake needs to be plated for your guests, or shortly after dinner if it is a self-serve station. PHOTO: TWIG & OLIVE PHOTOGRAPHY

FESTIVITIES BEYOND THE 'I DO' The celebration begins long before the wedding itself, with a variety of gatherings with family and friends. You can stick with tradition or add your own twists with these preand post-wedding day parties. For the wedding itself, if a day is not enough to spend with those you love, consider creating an agenda of wedding-weekend festivities. ENGAGEMENT PARTY: Whether hosted by parents or the couple, it’s a great way to meet or get reacquainted with new family members before the big day. If you have a wedding party, it is an opportunity for them to get to know each other, and of course to celebrate your engagement! SHOWERS: Family and friends usually host showers, so it is good to discuss with them if you want to go solo or if you both want to be the guests of honor. Wedding showers for the couple are more common than ever before. From themed parties to fun outings, ideas are endless. You can create a gift and alternative wedding registries. LUNCHEONS: This casual gathering can be enjoyed with close friends and family, but is often enjoyed with members of the wedding party, following the fitting of dresses or formalwear. It is also an opportunity to give any gifts to those with a special role in the wedding. BACHELOR/ETTE FESTIVITIES: A fun and casual outing with close friends and family, a bachelor or bachelorette party can be as simple as celebrating at home or local establishment to an exciting weekend destination. You can combine festivities with your soon-to-be spouse or have separate celebrations. WEDDING BREAKFAST: This can be hosted by the couple, friend, or a family member at home or at the hotel where guests are staying. It’s another opportunity to spend time with those dear to you, or for guests who have traveled a distance to celebrate with you. It’s also a great time to go over the day’s agenda.

REHEARSAL DINNER: This meal is held after the ceremony rehearsal and can be as simple as a backyard barbeque or as elaborate as the host wishes. Traditionally this has been hosted by the groom’s parents, but can, of course, be paid for by the couple themselves or someone else close to them. This party usually includes the couple, immediate family, attendants, ceremony officiant (& spouse), special out-of-town guests, or other family or friends that the host chooses to invite. A HIP AFTER PARTY: A casual affair in the hotel bar, a specially created lounge, or at a nearby establishment ensures a little celebration and relaxation with those nearest and dearest, following the reception dinner and dance. BRUNCH: Before your out-of-town guests return home, a post-wedding day brunch is a perfect opportunity for one last gathering, to share your appreciation and say your good-byes. GIFT OPENING: Gifts are usually opened the day after the wedding. Close family and friends enjoy gathering around, visiting once again, and seeing what the couple received. Some couples choose to do their gift opening in private and sometimes even wait until they return from their honeymoon. The choice is yours.

GRATUITIES Your wedding vendors always appreciate tips. Some include gratuity in their bill as a service fee, while others do not.

MOSQUITO CONTROL FOR OUTDOOR WEDDINGS Outdoor weddings are popular and can make for a picture-perfect event. Just remember, as the sun goes down, the mosquitoes come out, so you need to be prepared. Here are steps you can take and tips to consider. Start by talking with your venue. Tour the land and find out about hot spots, such as tall grasses, thicker foliage, and still water. Plan your festivities accordingly. Also, ask if they have any measures they take or have found successful at their venue. Ask if they will have someone spray the property before your event or if that is your responsibility. If this is your responsibility, check with the mosquito control company in advance to better understand the process and how many applications it will take before your event. You'll want to have them coordinate that schedule with the venue, so the timing is right for both parties. This step is typically the wedding couple's responsibility, but the investment is worth it to keep the pesky mosquito population down for your special event. OPTIONS TO CONSIDER: • Hire a professional to spray the grounds in advance. • Talk to your florist about options in flowers that are known to repel mosquitoes, and incorporate them into your décor. • Buy or design your own citronella candles or have paths of tiki torches around the grounds where guests will be present throughout the evening. • Oscillating fans can also help keep the mosquitoes away and cool your guests on a hot day. • Create baskets with bug sprays to set around the reception area in the evening. Have several different bottles (deet and natural) to allow your guests to choose what type of spray they want to apply. Make sure to assign someone to set those out.

If you're planning to have family and friends who will be traveling from out of town to celebrate with you on your beautiful wedding day, you will want to be sure to make them feel welcome and special throughout their entire stay. Blocks of hotel rooms are necessary for their overnight accommodations, and possibly even for local guests who want to be a part of the weekend festivities. Providing special welcome baskets or goodie bags from local merchandise, a guidebook with points of interest, weekend itineraries, gift cards, and a personal thank you note are a perfect touch to make your guests feel extra loved and welcome. We've rounded up several tips below on planning your wedding guest accommodations.

PLANNING FOR GUESTS • To help your guests make plans far enough in advance, start with a save the-date card, or a unique photo or video post. • Help guests get informed and stay connected regarding the wedding details by including relevant information in the invitation ensemble, as well as on your own personal wedding website. • Area hotels offer special group rates, but beware of peak seasons and other local events that may hinder availability. • Consider offering a few different hotel options at various price points; however, if you want guests close throughout the weekend, be sure to mention where you will be staying. • Ask the hotel about discounts and incentives regarding a suite for your wedding night, blocks of rooms for your guests, shuttle service, and hospitality areas for a welcome reception, post wedding brunch, or gift opening party. • Ask the hotel about their hold policies, regarding maximums or minimums, and when they will be released if not reserved. • Are there any special guests that you want to cover the costs of their hotel stay? • Is there a fee for parking? • Consider including some of your out-of town guests in additional gatherings. • In a formal reception, with planned seating arrangements, place guests in comfortable situations. 164 WEDDING PLANNER & GUIDE

• Don’t forget special arrangements, menus, or activities if children are attending. • Consider additional options such as a photo booth, caricature artist, live entertainment, or other added fun to keep your guests entertained between the ceremony and reception. • Consider “emergency essentials” baskets in reception restrooms for your guests’ convenience. • Be aware and attempt to accommodate those with special dietary needs. • Handwritten thank you notes following the wedding day are still proper etiquette and should be sent in a timely manner.

TIMING 12 MONTHS BEFORE: Book block of rooms. 8 MONTHS BEFORE: Include block information on save-thedates or wedding website. 3-4 MONTHS BEFORE: Start monitoring the hotel block on a weekly or monthly basis so you can adjust the number and type of rooms set aside if necessary. 1-2 DAYS BEFORE: Drop off guest welcome bags for the hotel to distribute.

catering

166 WEDDING PLANNER & GUIDE

PHOTOS: TWIG & OLIVE PHOTOGRAPHY

Food and drinks will be the highlight of the celebration and will be the most significant investment for your wedding. There are plenty of tasty options, from traditional familystyle meals, plated sit-down dinners and buffets, to unique food trucks and interactive themed stations. Couples are looking to provide that ultimate guest experience through a variety of culinary options and cocktails. Frosé, or wine tasting bar, anyone? Cultural delicacies, family recipes, signature cocktails, chef-attended food stations, pig roasts, and late-night snacks are just a few options when planning to hire your wedding caterer!

WHAT TO KNOW AND ASK

TIMING

• You will want to know your date, venue, number of guests, budget, menu ideas special recipe requests, or options for kids, vegans, or gluten-free.

1 YEAR OR MORE BEFORE: Initial consultation

• Will everything be in one meal or do you need any food for the couple and wedding party before the wedding, hors d'oeuvres for cocktail hour, or any late-night snacks? • Is the caterer in-house, or do you hire your own? • Is there a tasting, and if so, how many people can attend? • Who provides drinks, bar, and bartenders? • Will you have an open bar, limited bar, or any signature cocktails? • Any restrictions on what is brought on site?

SHORTLY AFTER CONSULTATION: Sampling appointment 4 MONTHS OR MORE BEFORE: Book caterer. 3 MONTHS BEFORE: Determine event prices with your caterer. 2 MONTHS BEFORE: Verify cost, taking into account updates in availability and seasonal fluctuations. 1-2 WEEKS BEFORE: Turn in absolute final guest count. 2-7 DAYS BEFORE: Make the final payment.

• What are the pricing options, service charges, gratuities, and payment terms? • What is included, and are there any extra charges for delivery, tables, chairs, tableware, cake cutting, or alcohol service? • Will there be a water or coffee station available? • What staff will be present, and what is their attire? • Who will be the point person at the event itself? • Which wedding vendors will be present during the meal and will need to be included in the guest count? • Who takes care of set-up, busing tables, and clean-up? Is this included in the service charge or an additional cost? WEDPLAN.COM 167

UNIQUE FOOD IDEAS PICNIC OR RELAXED COOKOUT: Perfect for a casual wedding, consider picnic fare, cookout, or a pig roast. If served outdoors, don’t forget to consider ways to keep critters from enjoying your food as well. FOOD STATIONS: Food stations are minibuffets, with each offering something special, such as a meat carving station, pasta or potato bar, dessert station, or an ethnic or themed station. These are fun alternatives that can cater to your tastes, and offer a variety of options for your guests! FOOD CARTS & TRUCKS: Food carts and trucks are relatively new to the wedding scene and can add some fun to your event. You may consider sliders, cheese curds, or popcorn, to name a few. Just be sure to know what your venue will allow on-site, and that there is space available. You can provide a variety of options to make it a meal or have late-night snacks available during the dance.

GRAZING BOARDS: Grazing tables are ideal if you’re looking for buffet-style vibes with a more decadent alternative to a buffet, using high-quality ingredients and striking styling to create a delectable dining experience for guests. This option is a great catering route since you can mix, match, and customize the tables to your heart’s content. Think platters of meats, veggies, fruits, crackers, and fermented foods arranged in a casual yet thoughtful way.

168 WEDDING PLANNER & GUIDE

SIGNATURE COCKTAILS: Consider adding something extra unique and fun to your affair with your own signature cocktails. Signature wedding cocktails can take some heat off of the bar and waitstaff because they can be premade in batches, which will also cut down on long bar lines. Plus, they are delicious!

Visit WEDPLAN.COM to find signature cocktail recipes!

bartender608.com | (608) 6-BAR-608

REFRESHING BEVERAGE STATION: Why not keep the refreshments flowing, especially if your wedding is outside and during one of the warm months? While the ceremony might not be the first setting that comes to mind when you think of ‘wedding catering,’ it’s a thoughtful addition that’ll leave your guests pleasantly surprised—and hydrated. To make them unique, you could tailor your beverages to your culture, hometown, or childhood favorites, but aim for light and refreshing.

A NOD TO YOUR HERITAGE: Honoring your city, region, or family heritage in your menu creation can be a fun and interesting experience for your guests. Whether you are celebrating Chinese traditions or southern customs, it’s easy to marry cultures on your menu. This can be as involved as crafting the entire menu or selecting a few key elements such as appetizers or a cultural dessert.

cakes & desserts

172 WEDDING PLANNER & GUIDE

THE LOOKING GLASS BAKERY

Wedding cakes can be an artistic masterpiece with different shapes, sizes, accents, and of course, decadent cake flavors and icing options! Today's couples are also creating dessert stations by adding in other sweets & treats, while still allowing for the wedding cake to be a gorgeous focal point. When choosing the looks and tastes of your wedding desserts, have some fun by playing off a particular hobby or passion; or you can be creative by considering the season, the theme or mood, your color palette, and of course, your taste buds!

WHAT TO KNOW AND ASK

TIMING

• Make sure your baker is licensed.

6-9 MONTHS BEFORE: Book your baker - book on the earlier side if your wedding is during a peak time.

• Does the baker offer a tasting, and how many guests can attend? • Do they have pictures of their creations? • How many weddings do they book on a weekend?

6 MONTHS BEFORE: Visit your baker for a design consultation.

• How far in advance do they make the cake, and how does that affect the taste?

2 WEEKS BEFORE: Give the final guest count to your baker and verify all details.

• Do they offer vegan or gluten-free options?

OPTIONS

• How large is a serving size? • How big of a cake or how many dessert pieces will you need? • Who provides the cake knives? • Decide who will be cutting the cake and if you want to do the traditional cutting of the first piece. • Will flowers or other decorative pieces be added to the cake or dessert display, and by whom? • Do you need cake stands, decorative dessert trays, display table or buffet? • Is there an additional fee for delivery and set up?

SIZE Cake and desserts are priced per serving, so know how many you need to serve. SHAPE Come with ideas in mind or let your cake designer be creative with an edible masterpiece. FLAVORS & FILLINGS Visit bakers for tastings to help you decide on something you love or that may be popular with your guests. FROSTING Buttercream, whipped cream, rolled fondant...explore your options.

• Is there anything that needs to be returned, and when?

DECORATIONS Additional accents such as flowers, cake jewelry, ribbon, hand-paintings, geodes, a special cake topper, or any additional decor for the entire display?

• Do you plan to freeze the top cake layer for your anniversary? Discuss with the baker, as some give suggestions while others will make a fresh cake later.

STANDS Consider buying or renting a cake stand or dessert trays to add elegance or uniqueness to your display.

• Ask about pricing, deposit, or payment schedule.

216 WEDDING PLANNER & GUIDE

PHOTO: COPPER ANTLER PHOTOGRAPHY

From pretty tables, linens, and dinnerware to the special touches of signage, lounge furniture and specialty lighting, area rental companies and event designers have what you need. They can help create the look you desire that is truly your own. Whether you’re starting with a blank canvas and need a canopy or a tent for an outdoor affair or want to curate your own unique spaces within your reception space with chic draping, you can mix it up, express your style, and be creative, giving your guests the ultimate experience! From classic or modern to rustic, industrial, or boho, the options abound!

WHAT TO KNOW AND ASK • Know what your ceremony & reception venues already provide. • What are your essential rental needs, and what extra design elements do you wish to incorporate? • Have a mood board & color palette to express the overall vision, and look to your event designer for advice on how you can enhance this vision or how to revise it to stay within budget. • Compare your wants and needs to your budget and decide what is most important.

SIMPLY GLAMOROUS FLORAL & EVENT DESIGN | BRANDI'S BRIDAL GALLERIA, ETC.

Gorgeous blooms can make the look of your wedding day when you work with a floral designer that understands your vision and helps you to enhance it! Schedule a consult and come with your ideas and color palette in mind, but be open to the advice and creativity of the floral expert. They can help you with bloom selections and suggest other rental décor items to help with ceremony and reception designs that stay within your budget. We know today's wedding couples want a unique experience and atmosphere for their guests, so feel free to think outside the box and create an event that is truly you.

WHAT TO KNOW AND ASK

TIMING

• Is there a fee for a consultation? This can be well worth it for their time in consulting, brainstorming, and creating an estimate.

12–18 MONTHS BEFORE: Schedule an initial consultation, as florists book over a year in advance for specific dates.

• Know your general vision and color palette. • Bring photos to your consultation of other wedding elements such as venues, attire, stationery, or any decorative pieces, to help match a certain look or style. • Does the season affect the flower options you are considering? • Know for whom you need floral for: the couple, parents, attendants, and special guests. There is a basic checklist in the worksheets section of this publication. • Know where you may want flowers for the ceremony and reception. • Ask the florist if he or she has any suggestions to achieve the look you are going for while staying within your budget. Decide if you are willing to go above your budget to get what you want. • Ask if they do all the delivery, set up, pinning on of boutonnieres, moving items between locations, and what needs to be picked up or returned. Discuss set up and tear down times, return policy, and all fees involved. • Do they offer any rental items that could add special touches to the event? • Discuss substitutions and pricing differences for any flowers that may be out of season or become unavailable through the wholesaler.

6–8 WEEKS BEFORE: Schedule a follow-up meeting to tie up loose ends before the flowers are ordered. 1 WEEK BEFORE: Check-in with any final details and to verify your order.

246 WEDDING PLANNER & GUIDE

PHOTO: TWIG & OLIVE PHOTOGRAPHY

Your photographs will be your most valued wedding heirloom that you'll look back on years from now, reminiscing about your favorite wedding day moments. There is nothing like the work of a photographer who is a true artist; so, do not leave your wedding day photography to an amateur. Find a wedding photographer with the right style and personality that matches you as a couple.

WHAT TO KNOW AND ASK • What photography style do you desire?

• Know the timeline of your day.

• Have a budget in mind; however, this is an important time to consider quality and personality over price, as they will be with you throughout the celebration, and you want to be elated with the end results.

• Discuss ahead of time what you want shot and any special requests.

• Understand what is included, such as time, number of photographers, length of coverage, equipment, photo rights, amount of editing, and end products. This will help you compare fees as well. • Does the photographer have samples of photography they’ve done at your venue? • Are there any shoot locations you have in mind, or any the photographer would like to suggest? • Do you want digital images, prints, albums, or a combination? Ask about a la carte or package options. • Know what is included in your package, the number of shooters, what events will be covered, cancellation policies, overtime fees, etc. • Does your photographer have a backup plan in case an emergency arises, and they cannot make it on your wedding day? • Will you have rights to the digital files? When you pay for a photographer, you pay for the creation of photography, not always the copyrights. • Do they have errors and omissions insurance as well as comprehensive liability insurance to cover any problems with your photos? • How long will it take to get your proofs, edited files, and final prints?

• Does the photographer do pre- or post-wedding shots with the couple to allow more time at the actual event to enjoy the guests and festivities? • Are there any family dynamics the photographer should be aware of? • Do you want an unplugged ceremony? If so, make it known by sign or announcement that you prefer your guests sit back and enjoy the ceremony. This leaves the photography to the professional and is less distracting to the couple and other guests. • For wedding day snapshots, do you want social media hashtags, filters, a wedding app, or other certain places you want them shared?

TIMING IMMEDIATELY AFTER ENGAGEMENT: Book photography services & engagement photo session with enough time to use photos in save the dates, wedding websites, and announcements. 1 MONTH BEFORE: Contact photographer to go over timeline and any new details, discuss how family portraits and other group shots will be handled, verify date, time, and location particulars. 1 WEEK BEFORE: Final check-in to confirm all information and trade emergency phone numbers.

PHOTOGRAPHY STYLES

DIGITAL OR FILM

FINE ART - This photography has a beautiful artistic approach with a distinct style. This type of photographer uses somewhat of a traditional element with some of the shots, but also captures candid, raw moments in natural lighting, closer to dusk. These photos tend to be stunning unique pieces of art that could be seen hanging in a gallery or wall art for your home.

Another decision you’ll need to make is whether to go with digital or film. Or a mix of both, which some photographers will do. Digital is the most common way of shooting as it allows shooting in any lighting and many different angles. Film provides a more soft, organic style, but tends to be more expensive with rolls of film and the cost of processing them.

TRADITIONAL - This style leans towards posed photos with artificial lighting that needs to be setup, with focus on portraits and wedding day moments such as first kiss, first dance, cake cutting, and family portrait shots. PHOTOJOURNALISM - This style strives to document the day as it unfolds, to tell a story with unscripted and candid photos that have more of a modern look than traditional wedding photography. Some documentary photographers won't set up portraits at all, while others are more flexible. Find out the possibilities, and also ask if they would be willing to work from a shot list or not. 248 WEDDING PLANNER & GUIDE

SHOULD YOU PLAN A FIRST LOOK? Some couples like to stick to the tradition of seeing each other for the first time during the walk down the aisle. Others are choosing to experience the first look before the ceremony, enjoying an intimate moment together before the wedding. It allows them to settle each other's nerves, prevent crying in front of a room full of guests, getting some emotional shots, and the opportunity to get some wedding party and family photos out of the way. A first look also allows more time later for celebrating with family and friends. PHOTO: DAVE STREMIKIS PHOTOGRAPHY

WHAT TO KNOW AND ASK

CREATE A SNAPCHAT FILTER!

• How long have you been in business and do you have references?

Anyone can make their own Snapchat filter for any event right in the Snapchat app. You could have one custom filter for your engagement party, another for the shower and bachelor/ette, and another for your wedding weekend. You can create, buy, and make Snapchat wedding filters available for guests to use. The app even allows you to set a radius access around your event and timeframe, so you only pay for the coverage you need. Once you've created and purchased your filters, it works the same as any other Snapchat filter: Snap a photo and swipe until you see your unique design. Then send!

• Where are you located, and how far do you travel? • Package options, & what is included? • Any additional fees, like delivery, setup or attendant? • What does the system look like, functions, backdrops? • Are you licensed and insured? • Do you have a contract? • Can I see a sample of the end product?

Be sure to create personalized hashtags! WEDPLAN.COM 263

videography

WEDPLAN.COM 265

Considering hiring a wedding videographer? DO IT! A wedding video captures aspects and depth of the day that photos can't quite do. The day passes by in a blink of an eye. You will want to watch as a couple, share with your children, and keep these live recorded memories of those who grow-up, and unfortunately, some who will pass. You'll be able to re-watch your video for years (while shedding a few tears because it's a pull-at-yourheartstrings kind of video). The most common regret we hear couples say is that they wish they would have hired a videographer. A professional videographer has the creative talent to capture, edit, and add emotion to make this a true masterpiece reflection of your wedding memories. So settle in, and check out our top tips of what to know and ask when it comes to hiring a pro wedding videographer.

WHAT TO KNOW AND ASK

TIMING

• What style of videography do you like?

UP TO 18 MONTHS BEFORE: Reserve your wedding date, send in the contract, as well as the reservation fee.

• How interactive do you want them to be with you and your guests? • Are you interested in raw footage or an artistically edited video? • Special effects that you like or don’t like? • Do they have samples of their work and anything filmed at your venue? • What formats do they offer? • Discuss the timeline of your day.

3 MONTHS BEFORE: Give the videographer your timeline and any other pertinent information they need to know. 1 WEEK BEFORE: Contact the videographer to verify all details and confirm the plan.

• Discuss ahead of time what you want recorded and any special requests. • Are there any family dynamics the videographer should be aware of? • Know what is included in your package, the number of cameras, mics, what events of the day will be covered, emergency back-up plan, cancellation policies, overtime fees, etc. • Are there any videos or photo montages you want created before the wedding as an engagement announcement, save the date option, or something to show at the reception? • Do you want live streaming for any guests who want to see it but unable to travel the distance? • When will the final product be received? • Do you want your rehearsal dinner filmed? If so, find out any additional costs for extra hours not included in the package. • Is a wedding highlight video included with the wedding film? • Do you want special messages or well wishes from your family & friends filmed? transportation

276 WEDDING PLANNER & GUIDE

PHOTO: COPPER ANTLER PHOTOGRAPHY

Ride in style for pre-wedding parties and for the wedding day itself. Your mode of wedding transportation can reflect the feel of the wedding and your personalities, or simply be a convenience for you and your guests to and from the airport, hotel, ceremony, photo ops, reception, or any other wedding-related events. Not to mention, it's a safe ride at the end of an evening of cocktails and friendly accommodation to offer to your guests.

WHAT TO KNOW AND ASK • What type of transportation do you want, for whom, and when? • What is the backup plan if the vehicle breaks down, and what are the refund and cancellation policies? • Does the driver have a GPS? • Is it an hourly rate, and do the hours need to be consecutive or can they come back at various times to shuttle guests. Ask about overtime fees, tipping, and what’s included for amenities. • What types of licenses and insurance do they have? • Be sure the driver knows the timeline and who to expect as passengers, with contact names and numbers, so no one is left behind and in case of emergencies.

• If the couple has special transportation at the end of the evening, make plans for transporting the gifts. • Don’t forget the honeymoon; how will you get to and from the airport?

TIMING Make transportation arrangements soon after the engagement, especially if your wedding falls around a peak time such as prom, homecoming, or graduation.

RIDE CONSIDERATIONS • To the Ceremony • Between Ceremony & Reception • To the Reception • To the Hotel • Safe Ride Options • Airport Transportation

Let us help with the finishing touches to one of the most important days of your life! Bride & Groom or the entire wedding party, we will provide your wedding day transportation.

honeymoon & travel

278 WEDDING PLANNER & GUIDE

PHOTO: THE WEDDING FLASHERS

It's time to relax, enjoy each other, and bond as a newly married couple. Although it might be tempting to put off a honeymoon until a "better time," the weeks following the wedding are perfect for some relaxation, or for those who have a sense of wanderlust, a new adventure to go explore across the globe with the love of your life. Of course, if you are planning a destination wedding, you can extend your stay for more time and activities with your guests and then switch to honeymoon mode directly following the reception. Regardless of your travel choices — a stay-cation, a nearby destination, or a trip across the sea —embrace this time as newlyweds.

DESTINATION WEDDINGS

TIMING

A destination wedding is a wedding that is held in a setting away from your hometown. Often a destination wedding and the subsequent honeymoon are celebrated at the same resort venue. Destination weddings are a great way to have a memorable, exotic wedding. Talk to a travel agent specializing in destination weddings to help you navigate the ins and outs of resort wedding packages. They will coordinate the trip for your guests and get passports, visas, and other paperwork in order. Because most family and friends may not be able to travel so far to join in your celebration, remember to host a reception at home so everyone can share in your joy!

12-14 MONTHS BEFORE: Contact an agent to plan a destination wedding.

Where to Have a Destination Wedding? The short answer: Anywhere you want. The longer answer: If you're going to get legally married outside of the country, you'll need to abide by that nation's wedding requirements and bring all the necessary documents. A waiting period, even proof of immunizations, may be required. Stateside destination wedding locations offer more than enough variety in climate and culture to satisfy any couple looking for wedding inspiration. Meanwhile, the Caribbean and Mexico offer ever-popular wedding locations, beautiful year-round, yet still relatively close to home. Couples willing to travel a bit farther often end up in Europe, planning weddings in Italy, France, and Ireland. Far-flung destinations could include the beaches of Thailand or the shores of Tahiti, New Zealand's fantasy novel landscapes, or Australia's dramatic Gold Coast. When planning, choose accessible locations for your guests (both physical and financial) and be mindful of giving everyone ample time to make travel preparations.

9-11 MONTHS BEFORE: Contact an agent to plan your honeymoon. Put down deposit. Begin passport process. 1-2 MONTHS BEFORE: Make final payment. 2-4 WEEKS BEFORE: Receive travel documents.

HONEYMOON PLANS • Seek out a travel agent; they have connections for discounts, experiences to share, expertise to help with ideas, execution of the plans, and deal with any troubles that may arise. • Find out if an agent fee is involved. The cost is typically worth the hours you will spend on the internet or any unforeseen circumstances you may encounter with an online deal. • Know preferred travel dates, length of stay, and potential destinations. • If travel plans are outside the country, allow enough time for passports or any additional paperwork needed. • Share ideas with your agent on your budget, what activities you like, and foods you enjoy, to help them provide you with travel recommendations. • To save money, consider travel dates away from holidays or spring break. • Ask about travel insurance, which often covers cancellations, sickness, or other unforeseen circumstances. • Ask the travel agent if they offer a honeymoon registry. This is a great alternative to traditional gifts, and more appropriate than requesting cash. WEDPLAN.COM 279

HEAD TABLE

TRENDY ALTERNATIVES HEAD TABLE SWEETHEART TABLE: Instead of sitting at a more traditional head table, the couple can enjoy a little alone time by sitting at their own two-seater dining table. The wedding party then sits together with their dates at regular guest tables. KING’S TABLE: A king’s table is a longer, larger rectangular or square table in the middle of the room where the couple, attendants and their dates, or whomever the couple chooses to sit around it. This creates a more intimate feel with everyone sitting face to face at the table, as well as being surrounded by all the lovely wedding guests on both sides of the couple.

PARENTS' TABLE SEPARATELY HOSTED TABLES: Instead of traditionally seating the parents and officiant at one table, each set of parents hosts their own table of close family and friends. This works especially well in situations with divorced parents, allowing everyone to sit with people they enjoy while remaining separate. The officiant and his or her date is incorporated into one of the other guest tables.
