The Riverside Arts Center is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, after three decades of acting as a community space to create and appreciate art.
Established in 1993 by Ruth and Bob Freeark, the Arts Center offers art classes, hosts exhibitions and holds public events for Riverside and the surrounding neighborhoods. Executive Director
Liz Chilsen said the Center serves all communities within the Riverside Township, including Lyons and Brookfield.
“We have different communities that nest within each other and each of them engages in their own way,” Chilsen said. “It ’s kind of an expanding sense of community.”
Chilsen said the Arts Center has evolved over the years depending on the expertise of individuals most involved. For example, a previous member specialized in ceramics, so he
worked to further develop the ceramic program.
The exhibitions have been the most consistent and ongoing programs, according to Chilsen. The Arts Center plans to host an anniversary exhibition in which 30 artists from the past 30 years come back to showcase their work again.
“Many people have gone on to have significant careers as artists after having

After World War I, the poppy flourished in Europe. Scientists attributed the growth to soils in France and Belgium becoming enriched with lime from the rubble left by the war. The red poppy came to symbolize the blood shed during war following the publication of the poem “In Flanders Fields” written by Lt. Col. John McCrae, M.D. while serving on the front lines.

According to the 75th Anniversary book of the village, the early settlers were onion farmers and members of the Riverside Holiness Association, who built a worship center at 8027 26th St. around 1910.
What began as a band of onion farmers has grown throughout the past century into a village of more than 7,000 people. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of North Riverside, a town described as a close-knit community with a “big heart,” according to Historical Society President Bryant Rouleau.
“It is a great community, coming from nothing to having a great
recreation, great fire, public works, municipality and an awesome library,” Rouleau said. “We have a lot of things for a small town.”
North Riverside has a rich history as one of Chicago’s western suburbs. Most notably, it was home to the Melody Mill Ballroom, one of the nation’s largest ballrooms built in the midst of the Great Depression.
According to Rouleau, many buildings in the village have been repurposed over the last century. The North Riverside Public Library was originally housed in local resident
Byrd March’s house, and has relocated multiple times before settling into its current location, previously belonging to the fire department.
“A lot of places have been reconverted or redesignated,” Rouleau said. “I’m a firm believer of not rebuilding, but reusing. I think some of the old (buildings) have such good bones.”
In order to commemorate the 100th anniversary, the village has organized a committee of about 10 people, including members of the Board of Trustees and North Riverside residents.
For the 50th anniversary, community theater members performed a play titled “From Ponds to Plaza” that the committee is considering adapting and showcasing again this year, according to Rouleau and Director of Parks and Recreation Colleen Broderick.
In addition to the play, the committee is planning an Anniversary Gala at the Riverside Golf Club for the community to celebrate with dinner and dancing. It has also sent calls out to residents for logo contest submissions and recipes for a Centennial Cookbook, although the plans are not yet finalized.
“We’re also trying to add elements of
the 100th anniversary to things that we already have in place, be it our Fourth of July celebration or our camp shirts,” Broderick said.
Broderick also said that the North Riverside community has a large role in
planning and executing the anniversary celebrations.
“There’s a lot of community spirit, not only during the 100th anniversary, but every day here,” Broderick said. “This community is really rooted in its history, and they take great pride, as they should, in the history of North Riverside and what it means to be a community member.”

How long in Business: Over 63 years
Why choose this area: I have lived and have been involved in this community for over 50 years.
Greatest current business challenge: Keeping up with all the tax changes and Continuing Education Credits that are necessary for my multiple licenses, including my E.A. status.
What do you love about your work: The people. I love the many people I have met. Your business philosophy: To treat clients the way I want to be treated. To treat them as I would treat an invited guest.
Greatest accomplishments:
Receiving the Woman of the Year Award, Cicero Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year Award, Multiple Rotarian Paul Harris Fellow Award, Western Springs Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Millenium Award, Five Who’s Who Awards, State of Illinois Woman of Distinction Award, Ronald Reagan Gold Award and two times elected Village Clerk of Brookfield.
What have you learned:
I have learned that many people pay taxes unnecessarily. With just a little bit of pre-tax season advice, we can cut their taxes by a lot.
How long in Business: Over 48 years
Why choose this area: I wanted to do financial planning for people who really NEEDED financial planning. 40 years ago there were only financial planners for the rich. Greatest current business challenge: Helping my clients remember investing is for the long term and to stick with their goals rather than trying to give into the ups and downs of the market.
What do you love about your work: The people. My clients become my friends. Your business philosophy: To invest my clients’ money as I would invest mine or my children’s.
Greatest accomplishment: Being the first Waddell & Reed Representative to maintain 250 million of clients’ money under management & being inducted to Waddell & Reed’s Hall of Fame.
What have you learned: I have learned that giving good finanical advice can help people turn their dreams into goals that can be reached.

The organization, which is dedicated to sustaining Olmsted’s vision for Riverside by inviting residents and visitors to learn, protect the environment and preserve Riverside’s cultural and physical heritage, had an unlik founder
Attorney Rober
Heidrich was among a group of residents who were initially displeased with the establishment of a children’s playground in the park behind their Riverside homes.
Heidrich looked for ways to ban the playground, he searched the history of the village and re-discovered Riverside’s connection the venerable landscape architect Olmsted. Heidrich’s appreciation of Olmsted led to a change of heart.
Heidrich adopted Olmsted’s embrace of open-air, park-like recreation, founded the
ederick Law Olmsted Society and nominated Riverside to be a National Historic Landscape District.
Today, FLOS is made up of a diverse group of Riverside residents who, among other activities, host landscape workdays in the village, maintain the Olmsted collection at the public library, host walking tours in the village, sponsor a student poetry contest, and conduct presentations on history and landscaping.
Sandie and Jim Petrzilka, who respectively run media and serve as board Vice President for FLOS, say of the group, “We’re a not-for-profit, and we are all volunteers. Everyone is very dedicated to Riverside. We get people from all over the world who come here, and we have a lot of fun too.”

This data represents sales of single-family homes and condo/townhomes in Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield from March 1, 2022 to February 28, 2023. In addition to total homes sold and average sale prices, we’ve also included two stats: Market Time and Sales Price/Listing Price Ratio that show how rapidly the current market is moving.
Market Time is the number of days a property is on the market from the time it is listed until the day that it closes. In “normal” times, a seller might put their home on the market and expect it to go under contract within a month or two. Following that, it might take another month for the home to close. A market time of 31 days, as we see for Brookfield single-family homes, is an
unusually low number that may indicate homes going under contract within days or hours of being listed.
Sales Price/Listing Price Ratio indicates the percentage of the listing price that a property was sold for. You might expect this number to be less than 100%, since buyers often try to negotiate discounts off the listing price. If the number is 100%, as it is in Brookfield, that means sellers are getting exactly what they are asking.
Our thanks to the Oak Park Area Association of Realtors for providing these statistics.
