Madison Street gets new art gallery Iranian-born artist a “towering figure” in Chicago art scene By TOM HOLMES Contributing Reporter

Corosh Haidari, along with his son Ashkon, opened their art gallery at 7416 Madison St. at the beginning of June, relocating from Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood on the near southwest side. First time visitors to his gallery will be dazzled by the bold colors on his huge canvases, which can measure up to eight feet high. Haidari works with oil paint using many different techniques, often applying it to his canvases with a palette knife instead of a brush, or a pouring method. Most people would call his paintings “abstract,” or “expressionism.” Haidari said his paintings usually sell for between $1,000 and 20,000. “My style is completely different than that of any other artist, so it’s hard to put in a category,” Haidari said of his works. “Maybe I’ve started a new style.” Haidari said he’s sold three works at his new location since opening and added many people have stopped by and checked out his gallery. “The street has a lot of beautiful stores but I didn’t see a gallery,” Haidari said of his decision to open on Madison Street. “I wanted to share my work and other artists work here.” The Chicago City Council passed a resolution in 1995 calling Haidari “a towering figure in Chicago’s arts community,” and noted that he had spent 25 years of his professional life in Chicago, had designed seven restaurants in the city and had created “over 800 works— paintings and sculptures—many of which adorn See ART GALLERY on page 3

Celebrating 100 Years

W

Beached, we had a whale of a time

e just got back from vacationing in Union Pier, Michigan, where we enjoyed six glorious days of sunshine. We spent our days at Union Pier’s public beach, which I believe is a metaphor for modern America. It’s about as wide as one of our 25-foot lots. It’s also very narrow, due to high lake levels. It’s sandwiched between vast private beaches. A security guard was stationed to protect those beaches. In the past, I’ve even seen police remove trespassers. We public-beachers, on the other hand, were crammed together like passengers riding the Blue Line. We had a French guest, though, who thought this was unfair. In his country, the beaches belong to everyone. So he led an invasion of the private beach. He apparently doesn’t believe in beach boundaries or, for that matter, private property. He commandeered a paddle board and paddle no one was using. Apart from the cramped public beach, I had no complaints. We were together with a

shifting cast of kids, grandkids and the occasional dog. We held nightly family feasts. At one of them, we witnessed the miracle of the six chicken breasts. There didn’t appear to be enough to feed the multitudes. But we cooked the chicken, blessed it with barbecue sauce and cut it up. Everyone was satisfied and there were scraps left over for making buffalo chicken dip. When we weren’t grilling, we were checking off all the perks of a Union Pier vacation: blueberry pancakes, bike rides, golf, kayaking, hot-tubbing, visits to the Straydog Restaurant and the Four Winds Casino, a boat ride on the lake, sunsets, fireworks, campfires and coolers of beer. Star-gazing and s’mores. Playing sports and rolling the dice in Risk. But the best part was being together with family 24/7. It was fun to wake up early with the grandsons, age 5, 3 and 1. As many grandparents can attest, they are adorable, delightful and exhausting. The 5-year-old, Troy, had a groundbreaking week. He learned to ride a bike without training wheels, paddle a board on the lake and even

briefly steer the boat. We didn’t see much of the other kids at the resort until Troy started pumping out hip-hop music and spontaneously started a dance party. There were also some activities we avoided. We didn’t watch TV and I was maintaining a complete news blackout — no newspapers, no bad news, no schedule, no deadlines, no work, no phone calls, or urgent e-mails. It was positively therapeutic. At night, we collapsed into slightly sandy beds. In the mornings, we sipped coffee on the screened porch. The yard had a few overhead wires, just to remind us of Forest Park. Our only regret was missing the fireworks at The Park. We heard they were spectacular. Kudos to the commissioners, especially Matt Walsh, who campaigned on the promise of restoring the fireworks and delivered. How often does that happen? Now that we’ve recharged our batteries and reconnected with our relatives, we’re ready to rock the rest of the summer in Forest Park. By the way, do they allow paddle-boarding at the pool? ■■John Rice is a columnist/private detective, who has seen his business and family thrive in Forest Park. Celebrating 100 Years

BERLINGER

Forest Parker helps with restoration from page 1 helping with the interior restoration of the woodwork in Oak Park’s Unity Temple. Berlinger and his wife, Kathryn, attended the festivities to celebrate the completion of the two-year, $25 million project on June 17. “Working at Unity Temple revived many memories of my youth and my first years in the United States,” Berlinger said. “Who says you can’t come home again?!” “Home” for Berlinger means Forest Park, more specifically 529 Beloit Ave. “As a young boy, Forest Park was America to me,” Berlinger said. It’s where his parents moved after leaving Bavaria in search of a better life for their family. Berlinger’s family founded Steinhauer Berlinger, HRD’s predecessor, in the northern tip of Bavaria in 1820. “My great-great-great grandfather owned a stone quarry,” Berlinger said. “He became a carver and did stone work.” The family enterprise grew into a construction company, expanding into concrete casting, painting and stucco work. In its prime, it employed eight cousins and 20 employees. However, Alois and Helga Berlinger decided to leave war-torn Germany in 1965 to join Helga’s sister in Forest Park. “I grew up in a military-occupied country,” Berlinger recalled. “There were still remnants of World War II and the country was devastated. Post-war Germany didn’t have jobs.” In the waning days of the war, Alois had been pressed into military service at the age of 13 to build tank traps. Soon, however, they were captured by American GIs, who shipped the teens safely home in trucks. The Berlingers were grateful for the American army. Nonetheless, the family sailed from Bremerhaven in June 1965 on the final voyage of the SS Berlin. Berlinger, who was 7 at the time, recalled the luxury liner took nine days to cross the Atlantic. They arrived in Forest Park on June 19, 1965 and took up residence on Harrison Street across from The Park. “I didn’t speak English,” Berlinger recalled. The first “conversational” phrase he learned was, “Shut up.” He said it as a friendly greeting to people walking past. He found that Forest Park was welcoming and had everything his family needed, including German beer at Homer’s Restaurant. Helga worked there as a waitress and Berlinger became a busboy at age 11. He had already been working for his father for three years. Alois restored stone work and painted historic homes. His now 8-year-old son served as his translator. “My dad taught me so many skills, and I passed them down to my sons.” Alois was good friends with Jim Berliner

and dozens of light fixtures. “The contractor took them off, bundled and tagged them, and we used semis to ship them to Peoria,” Berlinger said. “Some could not be saved, so we reproduced them, using an aging process.” The wood was over 100 years old. It had to undergo stripping and wood decay restoration. They then applied natural oil finishes. “We had to use 30 different stains to get a consistent color,” he said. HRD’s 12 employees, all of them crosstrained in restoration and preservation skills, worked for 18 months on the project. They successfully restored all the wood to the original condition Frank Lloyd Wright specified 110 years ago. “This is the oldest modern building we’ve ever worked on,” Berlinger said. “Wright was a minimalist, who used modern methods to create classic structures.” It is not the biggest job they’ve ever tackled, however. “We restored the woodwork in a building from 1894 on the University of Illinois campus. It was massive, four stories and it turned into a two-year project.” They also restored the Livingston County Courthouse and MICHAEL BERLINGER its counterpart in Hancock County. They even restored two churches in Leadville, Colorado, the highest city in the U.S. at 10,200 feet. “We have projects all over the U.S.,” Berlinger said. “We also have a project in Holland.” The company imports tools from Germany and uses them to provide full-service restoration. “We restore stone, wood, statues and stained glass,” Berlinger said. “Our tradesmen and craftsmen wear many hats and we keep them busy.” He stays busy as the CEO and helps on the artwork. He also taught his sons hands-on how to do woodworking and wood finishing. Today, Stephen, Christopher, Joseph and Anthony play leading roles at the company. “My goal was to have my sons involved,” he said. “We also encouraged college.” Berlinger set a good example by returning to college, after a 30-year absence and graduating from Bradley University in 2004. Kathryn serves as the corporate secretary and notary public. He and his wife have been knighted by the Vatican, specifically the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre. This order was founded in 1099 and has 30,000 members. Their mission is to reinforce the practice of Christian life, by their spiritual, charitable and social works. The Berlingers were recognized for their work restoring churches.

WOODWORKING: Michael Berlinger and his wife Kathryn inside Oak Park’s Unity Temple on June 17. Berlinger’s company worked on the recently completed $25 million restoration project. (not a typo, that’s a different family), who was in the cemetery monument business. Berlinger had the privilege of painting Berliner’s warehouse windows, a tough task for a youngster. Helga became a painter, too, the first female member of the painter’s union. She was also the bookkeeper for the family business. “My parents had a painting company by about 1968,” he recalled, “and became regular advertisers in the Forest Park Review.” From Harrison Street, the family moved to 913 Ferdinand and later to 529 Beloit. He attended school at St. Bernardine’s. He recalled they had a four-stall garage and that survivors of the Titanic lived across the alley. Berlinger had never seen a black person in Germany and assumed a man he saw was a chimney cleaner.

“It was culture shock coming to America,” he said. City life was also a bit of a shock, so the family moved to a piece of property on a lake in Peoria. That is where Heritage Restoration and Design is now headquartered. Berlinger’s sons play key roles. “They have helped transform the company,” he said. “They brought in high-tech equipment and landed some high-profile projects.” They successfully bid on the Unity Temple project at the end of 2015. The architect recommended them, and it helped that Berlinger had roots in the area. HRD’s job was to restore all of the temple’s wood moldings, doors, pews, wood fixtures and chandeliers, which required removing thousands of board feet, more than 40 doors

Big-time investing in Forest Park Housing market and a more efficient permit process help explain bump By TOM HOLMES Contributing Reporter

Marty Sorice and his wife Lynn bought a bar, which they renamed Blueberry Hill, for $36,000 in 1983. By the time he finishes rehabbing it some 34 years later, Sorice said he has put close to a million dollars into the business, located at 427 Desplaines Ave. Big dollars are being invested in homes and businesses in Forest Park, according to Department of Public Health and Safety Director Steve Glinke, who is responsible for village code enforcement and gets into almost every building being rehabbed. A large portion of the investment is being made by what Glinke referred to as “flippers,” investors who buy old homes at bargain prices, rehab the property and then sell them at a profit. “We have probably 8-10 regular builders in town who have bought, invested and sold 150 houses here in the last two or three years,” Glinke said. The home at 301 Elgin Ave., for instance, sold in November 2015 for $122,500. In August 2016 after a gut rehab, the property sold for $530,000, according to documents filed with the Cook County Recorder of Deeds. Realtor Dorothy Gillian said it is not just flippers who are investing in homes but many residents as well. Mainly two groups of people are buying in Forest Park, she said, young professional couples looking for a balance between downtown access and small town affordability and “empty nesters,” who downsize after raising families in neighboring suburbs like Oak Park. There are others, too. “I have clients who stay in town and are investing in their homes because they couldn’t get out what they initially put in,” Gillian said. “I have many clients saying, ‘I want to sell my house and I want this much money.’ I say, ‘Sorry but this is how much your house is worth in today’s market.’” So residents stay put and spend money on improvements to their home to drive up its value. Gillian said the housing market

has recovered somewhat since 2012, but it dipped in 2017. Trulia Blog, an online real estate resource, recently listed Forest Park as the top suburb in the country with “a slick city feel without big-city cost.” Forest Park’s relative affordability, proximity to public transit and the I-290 expressway, plus its vibrant downtown add to the attractiveness. Glinke noted that the village’s permitting process and code enforcement practices have also contributed to the increase in investment. “We changed our service model here seven years ago,” he said, “with the goal of seeing the most properties improved that we can and facilitating that process. You’ll hear that other communities are difficult in permitting. We’ve created new efficiencies and that’s why we see people come back.” Glinke said his department now contracts out oversight of commercial projects in the village to private companies and has computerized some of its records. They’ve worked to get permits turned around quickly and even issue same-day demolition permits, with the understanding the village will keep checking in and stop the project or issue fines if necessary. “It’s been a series of little things,” Glinke said. “It’s made the process more predictable as much as it is efficient.” Some developers appreciate the changes. “It’s a good town to work in,” said an employee, who preferred to remain anonymous, from Groa Development, a local developer. “The building department here is not your enemy.” Groa has flipped a dozen homes in town in just the last two years. At least one other business owner agreed. “We love what the town has been in the past … and are excited for our future,” said Sorice, who has purchased numerous other businesses since 1983. “Forest Park is definitely on the rise. There is no place we would rather be.”

1977: Mayor’s death, train derailment and grave digging follow joyous centennial anniversary By JOHN RICE

Contributing Reporter

977 was a somber year in Forest Park, a sharp contrast to the heady festivities the village held in 1976 to celebrate its centennial anniversary. Mayor Howard Mohr died suddenly; an “L” train plunged to the pavement and Michael Todd’s grave was robbed. There were also some happier moments: the new and expanded Oktoberfest on HOWARD MOHR Roosevelt Road, 1924-1977 Sgt. Richard Archambault’s miraculous survival of two gunshots and 10-year-old Ronald Dalton skating his way into the Guinness Book of World Records. All of these events were captured in the pages of the Forest Park Review. The publisher and editor was now Robert Haeger, who succeeded the late Claude A. Walker. The newsstand price had risen from 10 cents to 15 cents. It featured a crack reporter named Judy Topinka. She went to become a popular politician, who served as state treasurer and ran for governor. A young teacher named Jackie Schulz started writing her “Talk of the Town” column. New Year’s Day 1977 got off to a rousing start. The FBI conducted gambling raids on three locations in Forest Park. They netted $9,200 in cash and extensive gambling records from local characters, like Sam Samarcco. Forest Park police also conducted a crackdown on dog owners, making them “responsible for removal of any excreta.” January 12, 1977 began as a joyful day for many villagers but soon turned. Sixty of them had traveled to Springfield by

bus to celebrate the retirement of State Senator Howard R. Mohr. Three hours before the ceremony was to begin, Mohr slumped to the floor of a coffee shop and never regained consciousness. He was only 51 years old. Governor Jim Thompson and his wife paid their respects at his funeral. A few weeks later, the village council voted to re-name the Community Center in his honor.

To succeed Mohr, the village council unanimously appointed Santo Rizzo as mayor Rizzo had liked his third grade teacher so much, he took Miss Helen Imber to dinner at Giannotti’s. Imber later willed a $1,000,000 to the Forest Park Public Library to build its present home. The Review recognized librarian Cora Salee for compiling a topical history of Forest Park, while Joe Sansone was named

“Citizen of the Year.” Sansone was a long-time business owner in Forest Park and business was booming in the village. Lee Choi Restaurant opened inside the Park Lounge (now O’Sullivan’s) and Venture Restaurant began a long run at Des Plaines & Madison (now Big Boss). Business was too good at Stormy Monday, The Ending and Olde Towne West that these “singles bars” were suspended for overcrowding. A very unusual store also opened, at 7413 Madison, too. Erots Pants & Plants offered a free house plant with any purchase. Forest Park National Bank published a report showing its financial condition to be solid. Home prices rose, ranging from $31,000-$47,000. In other residential news, the council wanted no part of approving Section 8 housing at 1020 Des Plaines. The council also admitted that the village could no longer afford insurance premiums and would become self-insured. They couldn’t predict how that would work out but the Review did run a horoscope, “Your Week Ahead” by Damis.

Celebrating 100 Years

It offered practical predictions like, “spring cleaning can really lift your spirits, yard work, too. Homework of any kind is fun.” This feature was among many columns that filled the Review. There was “Keepin’ Healthy” by Mary Richards, offering home remedies. “What’s happening at the Schools” was penned by Jodie Henderson. For the older set, Ruth Pelis wrote “Happenings at Altenheim.” There was “Your Legal Rights,” by Bryant Barry, Jr., Attorney at Law, “Summer Recreation,” by Art Scheiwe. Two columns covered sports: “Men’s Softball at the Park” and “Recreation Basketball,” by Ron Milchhoefer. In other sporting news, wheelchair basketball came to Proviso West High School. The tag line was, “its ability, not disability that counts.” Handwriting expert James Murray completed his training in graphoananalysis and started his long running column for the Review. Finally, Congressman Henry Hyde railed against liberalism in his “Washington Memo.” He complained about “Aliens on the Gravy Train” and warned that, “universal voter registration was an invitation to fraud.” Not long after Mayor Mohr’s death, the village was rocked again on February 4. A CTA elevated train was negotiating the turn at Wabash & Lake, when it struck the train ahead. Several cars plunged to the ground. 11 passengers were killed, including Forest Parkers Gail Wolniewicz, 23, and Marion McKeag, 45. Another tragedy of sorts occurred on June 27, when grave robbers stole the remains of Michael Todd, the Oscar-winning producer of “Around the World in 80 Days” and Elizabeth Taylor’s third husband. Todd had been killed in an air crash, on March 22, 1958. He was worth between $3 and $5 million at the time of his death and was rumored to be wearing an expensive ring. He was buried in Jewish Waldheim Cemetery. Taylor was a frequent visitor to his grave and the Review reported that she stopped at the Golden Steer Restaurant following one of her visits. The robbers stole Todd’s remains, which were in a rubber bag. On August 24, private detective Anthony J. Pellicano located this bag in the underbrush, while newspaper reporters and CBS News looked on. The Review opined, “Todd, a man who liked to live high, would not be happy that the fine for grave robbery was less than a hundred dollars.” In a happier cemetery story, Sgt. Richard Archambault pursued three white suspected drug dealers into Forest Home Cemetery. The suspects fired two shots at him. One hit his thumb, while the second was stopped by his police star. “I guess I was just lucky,” Archambault said.

(Inset) A closeup of Todd’s grave reveals an empty casket and missing casket cover. This didn’t stop him from risking his life again, when there was an armed robbery at the Lazy Lion Pancake House, 8300 Roosevelt. This set off another manhunt in Forest Home. In entertainment news, “How Deep is Your Love?” was the hit song of 1977. The movie blockbusters were “Star Wars,” “Saturday Night Fever” and “Rocky.” Forest Park no longer had a movie theater but hosted a personal appearance from film critic Gene Siskel.

Other celebrities visited the village and its environs, including singer B. J. Thomas, actor Mickey Rooney and drummer Buddy Rich. Ten year-old Ronald Dalton also wanted to become a celebrity. He wore his roller skates for 16 days to beat the previous world record. The Review reported that wearing skates 24/7 “made playing softball and pool a little more difficult.”

Robbery near CTA Blue Line station

A 19-year-old Forest Park man told police he was robbed on July 7 around 1 a.m. while walking home from the CTA Blue Line platform near Circle Avenue and Harrison Street. The man told police he works at O’Hare Airport and was on his way home on the train. While on the train, a passenger got on and sat across from him. The unknown man followed the Forest Park man off the train and pushed him up against a fence saying, “Give me everything you got.” The victim told police he replied, “You don’t wanna do this.” A struggle ensued and the offender eventually ran off with the victim’s bag and wallet. The victim chased him and found the man in a Harrison Street alley. After a “small struggle,” the offender ran off with $17. The victim was cut on his forehead and back. No arrest has been made but CTA video captured stills of the suspect.

f you do, you should know how important foot care is. Over time, diabetics risk developing foot complications. When the nerves are damaged from chronic high blood sugar, feet can become numb or painful with burning or tingling. This is called diabetic neuropathy. When diabetes affects the arteries, circulation to the legs and feet may be compromised. Either of these conditions may lead to serious problems including ulceration, even amputation. The key to prevention is early diagnosis of diabetes, and regular foot exams from a podiatrist. Diabetics who receive regular foot care, including paring of calluses and debridement of thick fungal toenails, are almost four times less likely to undergo an

amputation than those who do not seek treatment. Medicare and some private insurances cover 1 pair of diabetic shoes and 3 pair of protective insoles each calendar year. Dr. Lambert has been a supplier of diabetic shoes since 2002. The shoes come in 30 different styles each for men and women. These include boots, lightweight colorful athletic shoes, and dress shoes. Even patients who are not diabetic love the look and comfort of the footwear. Diabetic socks, slippers and compression hosiery are also available. Protecting your feet with appropriate footgear is an important aspect of preventive care for diabetics.

Celebrating 100 Years

Variance granted to build home on narrow lot

Desplaines Avenue site has been in question for years By ROBERT J. LIFKA Contributing Reporter

The on again-off again plan to build a single-family home on a lot narrower than the required 40 feet at 135 Desplaines Ave. is back on again following Forest Park Village Council action during its July 10 meeting. The council voted 4-0 Monday to approve a zoning variation allowing JP Props Inc. to build on a 31½-foot-wide lot. At the June 12 meeting, commissioners voted to amend multiple sections of the zoning code, including the section declaring a moratorium on the building of singlefamily homes on lots narrower than 50 feet. In his memorandum to the village council, Steve Glinke, director of the Department of Public Health and Safety, said the rationale for the moratorium was “unclear,” noting that it was opposed by the Zoning Board of Appeals and by homeowners who attended an August 2005 meeting on the matter. “Staff believes the content of this text is too restrictive and believes its repeal will not result in over-built neighborhoods,”

Glinke said in the memorandum, noting that staff, the zoning board and the village council will still be able to evaluate each case on its own merits. Approving the variance benefits a pair of River Forest village trustees, Susan Conti, who represents JP Props, and Patty Henek, who is listed on the Illinois Secretary of State website as owner of LLC JP Properties, 2119 Harlem Ave., with her husband. According to Glinke, the previous owner of the property and the adjacent lot at 137 Desplaines, was granted a variance in 2007 to split what was then a 66-foot lot, demolish an existing single-family home on the 137 Desplaines side of the property and build two new homes. Financial difficulties related to the housing market crash prevented the project from occurring and the variance expired after 365 days of inactivity. In 2015, JP Props purchased the property under the assumption the lots were separate, according to Glinke. Each lot having its own property index number and tax bill led to that belief, he added. The property at 137 Desplaines was gutrehabbed and sold.

Historically accurate

Home of former historical society president hits the market By LACEY SIKORA

Contributing Reporter

f 209 S. Grove Ave. looks slightly familiar, it may be because you have walked inside it during one of the many times the home has been open to the public. Owner Kelly Kline, a past president of the Oak Park River Forest Historical Society and old home restorer extraordinaire, has opened her house to the public for many fundraisers, including the Parenthesis Kitchen Walk and numerous Historical Society tours. While the 1887 Victorian home could stand as a standard bearer for historically accurate home restoration, that wasn’t always the case. Kline, who purchased the home in 1997 when her husband was transferred to the area from Delaware for a job, recalls the house was in need of quite a bit of work when they paid $335,000 for it. PICTURE PERFECT: There’s very little of 209 S. Grove Ave. in Oak Park that hasn’t been restored to reflect its Victorian origins, including the front porch, which was rebuilt to conform to the home’s original 1887 design.

VICTORIAN

Fully restored from page B1

“People on the block thought we were nuts to pay that,” Kline said. “Basically, the house was a total dump.” She describes a 1970s decorating nightmare, complete with green shag carpeting throughout the house. The Klines had tackled an old-home restoration with their previous house in Delaware, and while Kline fell in love with Oak Park’s architecture, she was hesitant at first to take on a complete house project. Something about the house on Grove Avenue, with its corner location and turret, spoke to her and she jumped in with both feet.

Pre-internet sleuthing In the age of the internet, sourcing vintage home pieces is as simple as entering key search terms into Google, but in the late 1990s Kline had to use more traditional methods of research. Historical home-centered magazines like Old House Interiors, Old House Journal and Victorian Magazine provided inspiration as did her neighbors’ homes. Kline recalls that acquaintances and friends in Oak Park provided a wealth of knowledge. “The thing that’s really great about Oak Park is that you meet people who know things about old houses and can recommend others like contractors or interior designers to help you along the way,” Kline said. “When I was redoing the bathrooms, I dreamed of subway tile because some of the houses in Oak Park had their original subway tile. Now, I’d be able to find reproduction subway tile at Heritage Tile, but it didn’t exist then.” In restoring the home’s plumbing and light fixtures, Kline found that going antiquing in Pennsylvania provided a wealth of finds that suited the era of her home. Word of mouth also helped her restore some of the home’s original features. Kline recalls that the original dining room built-in had been ripped out and stored in the attic, but the leaded glass doors were missing. Her carpenter was prepared to recreate the doors according to the measurements of the cabinet when a neighbor told her that the John Toomey Gallery had the original doors. She pur-

‘MODERN’ VICTORIAN: Though the décor, including the kitchen (lower left) looks like it came right out of Victorian home furnishings catalog, the home’s “guts” are new, including the electric, plumbing and HVAC systems. The period-correct kitchen cabinetry hides such amenities as a Sub Zero fridge and dishwasher. chased the doors, complete with their original hardware, and they were a perfect fit. When the grandson of the original owner stopped by, he brought original photos of the house, which also aided her restoration efforts. “It’s kind of neat when you have an old house and you have photos of that house,” Kline said. “We were fairly lucky that the original owner, John J. Jones, was well-known locally. He was president of Cicero Township before it became Oak Park. The family was very involved as we were redoing the house.”

Guts and glory There is very little of the house that Kline has not restored, all with an eye to returning and maintaining the home’s original style. Using photographs in the historical society’s archives as inspiration, she had the chimney

rebuilt and redid the roof. The porch was falling apart, and Kline determined that it had been modified in an 1895 remodel. She rebuilt it to the original 1887 design and also replaced approximately 75 percent of the exterior shingles with new cedar shingles. On the interior, Kline noted that “all of the guts are new.” Over a period of roughly 10 years, the plumbing, electric and HVAC systems were all updated, and the latest addition is a central air conditioner. The floors were all refinished, and any woodwork that had been painted was stripped and restored. Kline worked tirelessly on the details, restoring stainedglass windows to match intact originals and choosing periodappropriate wallpapers. One of her most striking projects was the kitchen remodel. Working with kitchen designer Jean Stoffer, Kline created a mod-

ern kitchen beneath the trappings of a Victorian design. The cabinets look original to the home, but are newly created. Although you wouldn’t know it, the room sports a dishwasher and Sub Zero refrigerator concealed behind cabinetry doors. Kline notes that the design was a finalist in a Sub Zero contest. In the backyard, Kline created what she calls a botanical garden in the city. Working with a landscape designer to create pathways, a patio and a koi pond, the plantings are now mature, and Kline describes being in her backyard as feeling like you are in the country.

On the market Kline and her husband are beginning a new chapter in their lives, and have listed the home with Historic Home Realty’s Margaret McSheehy for $989,000. McSheehy notes that the Klines have

gone above and beyond in their restoration of the home. “It’s important to note that this wasn’t done for resale,” McSheehy said. “Everything was done right, because they were doing it for themselves.” Kline says that she always knew that she and her husband were just stewards of the home for the next generation. “This house will have a buyer who appreciates all of this,” Kline said. “You don’t see a lot of homes like this. Even though it’s all old looking, it’s all modernized underneath.” She also says the location can’t be beat. “We’ve counted how many restaurants we can walk to from here, and we can eat out at a different place for weeks,” Kline said. “We’re one block from the train, which is one of the things I love about Oak Park. You can partake of the city, and have everything you need close to home.”

Oak Park Arms: Maintaining Its Original Charm

I

n 1922, Oak Park was a young suburb with an elegant hotel/apartment building - the Oak Park Arms, and it was the epitome of style and sophistication. The Arms was always busy with meetings of all kinds, galas and wedding receptions. By the 1970’s, however, hotel chains were springing up everywhere. The Oak Park Arms’ future was in doubt, until it was purchased by two friends who wanted to create active retirement living in a community that was full of life, service and spirit. Today the Oak Park Arms is still owned by those two friends who remain involved and committed to excellence. It is flourishing as an independent living or an assisted living retirement community offering residents as full a life as they wish. The word “choices” applies to everything. There is an abundance of appealing options for dining, learning, fitness, care and camaraderie. Residents enjoy an unbeatable combination of value, flexibility, life enrichment and fully integrated senior services. With more

than 300 events a month, residents can create a day as exciting – or as relaxing – as they wish. Books are delivered from the renowned Oak Park Library. Complementary transportation is available to appointments, the grocery store and the shopping mall. Within the Arms is an elegant dining room, ballroom, meeting rooms, barbershop, hair salon, doctors’ offices and a wonderful place for a massage. The Arms shares space with the Lifelong Learning Center (the local Senior Center), and more than ten other providers of senior-centered care are within the Arms. There are assisted living services if and when they are needed. Short term or respite stays are popular. The Adult Day Care program invites participants to spend their daytime hours at The Arms and then return home in the evenings. Winner of multiple awards, the Oak Park Arms has maintained its original charm. It is an affable and affordable home for older adults and a great resource to Oak Park, River Forest, Forest Park and surrounding suburbs.

Top 3 Reasons People Choose Wye Valley: Food, Fun, and Friends!

O

ver the years, Wye Valley has become “Home Sweet Home” to our residents. While everyone has their own unique reasons for moving in, there tends to be similarities with a majority of people for why they enjoy and choose to live here. Those commonalities are the food shared, fun had, and friends made!

#1 – Food!

And at the Altenheim, you’ll be able to protect it with rent that is reasonable. But the Altenheim is so much more… it is surrounded with beautiful grounds and wildlife, seniors who look out for one another and apartment selections and activities to suit your lifestyle. You’ll be as happy as a lark here; come visit us to find out why.

7824 West Madison Street Forest Park, IL 60130 708.366.2206 www.thealtenheim.com

Planning and cooking meals can be tiring and time consuming. Motivating yourself to make that trek to the grocery store can be exhausting. If any of this sounds familiar, then you aren’t alone! So many people enjoy Wye Valley because they can finally relax and let someone cater to their needs. They enjoy simplified living and can bask in the convenience of already made, fresh, and delicious meals. They share meals with their friends, tell jokes around the table, and reflect on the day’s activities – all hassle free!

#2 – Fun!

We believe that making memories and having a good time are one in the same. At Wye Valley, we plan tons of exciting events and activities for our residents throughout the year. From movie nights, to bowling, to summer cruises, we do it all! In fact, we recently had one of our residents fulfill her dream of enjoying a hot air balloon ride. The experience is what you make of it and at Wye Valley, the fun is endless.

#3 – Friends!

For many, friendships and creating relationships are the foundation for a healthy and happy life. When people move in to Wye Valley, they make new and lasting friendships. “Everyone that I’ve met at Wye Valley has been so nice and welcoming from the start. I love getting together with my friends over some coffee where we can laugh about our stories over the years” – current Wye resident. The ability to share life’s ups and downs together is what makes Wye Valley a special place to live. So much more to offer! Even though food, fun, and friends are a large aspect of why people move in to Wye Valley, there are countless factors that make us special and unique. One of those unique offerings is that

we are located on 10 beautiful acres of land, right next to the forest preserves. People can relish in our exquisite English Garden or take a peaceful walk on the nearby trails. Most of the Wye Valley residents previously lived in their homes for 30, 40, and even 50+ years. They loved the time they spent there but longed for more social engagements and the opportunity to live a more carefree lifestyle free from home maintenance concerns and more time to enjoy everyday life moments. s founder and chairman of the Celebrating Seniors Coalition, Jim Flanagan has been inextricably linked with the sevenyear-old organization that honors and supports older adults in Oak Park, Forest Park and River Forest. While he is stepping down as Celebrating Seniors chairman, Flanagan will continue to serve as chairman of the Oak Park/River Forest Township Senior Services Committee, among other community roles. Those hats include being the unit leader of TripCom MRC—the Triple Community Medical Reserve Corp, which covers Elmwood Park, Forest Park, and River Forest. The MRC consists of medical and non-medical volunteers who help the county health department and the villages during public health events, and was formed to meet the health needs of the public in the event of a significant emergency, disaster or epidemic. A nationally recognized expert on financial issues that affect seniors, Flanagan helps older adult investors through his company, Bentron Financial Group. Q: The theme for Older Americans Month this year was “Age Out Loud.” How do you think that relates to seniors in our area? A: There is so much energy and activism around here and a big part of that comes from people in their 60s, 70s, and even older. They don’t take a back seat to anybody—nor should they. These are men and women who have much to offer in experience, wisdom and perspective. Q: You recently earned a Master’s degree in gerontology. What’s an issue that older adults are facing that people may sometimes overlook? A: The importance of making sure we foster an environment where older people stay connected—with each other, with families, friends and neighbors, and with the world in general. Two ways to do that are adopting employment policies that help people in care-giving positions and building more agefriendly communities through better transit systems or intergenerational community centers. Q: How confident are you in Americans’ recognition of the heightened role that seniors should

play in building our future? A: We have a strong history of innovating in the face of challenge— and this relentless “age wave” is no different. An aging population is an opportunity to use our social and technological ingenuity to develop solutions to our changing needs that can move America forward. As more Americans live longer and healthier lives, the longevity and productivity of our society will also expand. By restructuring public policies on issues like work and retirement, transportation, housing, health care, and communitybuilding, we can make the most of this important source of social energy. Q: You recently turned 50 years old, so you’re (probably) closer to “retirement age” than the start of your career. What are some goals you have, professionally and personally? A: My personal and professional goals have always been linked. Personally, I want to see my family and friends continue to thrive. I have been blessed with wonderful people in my life and as I get older the time I spend with them is more precious. I am looking forward to deeper and more meaningful relationships as I grow older. Professionally, I want to continue my work as a Financial Gerontologist. I am currently pursuing my PhD in Leadership and Gerontology and hope to add to the body of knowledge in the field of cognition and dementia. My interests lie in doing research to better understand how financial decision-making is impacted over the life course. I also want to study and better understand how to help people make smooth transitions in later life when confronted with significant change. Celebrating Seniors provides financial support to seniors in need—more than $70,000 has been raised since the group’s inception. Its other three objectives are facilitating cooperation between the business community, government agencies and non-profit organizations for the benefit of the senior population; promoting senior groups and organizations that serve persons 60 and older; and raising public awareness of issues affecting seniors.

Panton Eye Center Doctors Provide Latest Eye Care

T

he Panton Eye Center has provided state-of-the-art eye care for over fifty years. Board-certified ophthalmologists and optometrists offer comprehensive optical, medical, and surgical care including five treatment lasers. John H. Panton, M.D., founder, comments on the advances made during his career: “Cataract was once a blinding disease. Surgery required a lengthy hospitalization and patients wore thick spectacles post-operatively. That is a thing of the past. Today’s no-shot cataract surgery allows the restoration of normal vision for nearly everyone. What we now consider routine was unimaginable when I began!” Peter J. Panton, M.D., senior surgeon, describes the surgical elimination of glasses or refractive surgery: “The refractive components of the eye are the cornea (in the front of the eye) and the lens (inside the eye). There are two major refractive procedures: (1) LASIK is the use of a laser to reshape the cornea; (2) Refractive Cataract Surgery is the combina-

tion of a bifocal implant with no-shot cataract surgery. For both our LASIK patients and our Refractive Cataract Surgery patients, life without glasses is the anticipated outcome.” Robert W. Panton, M.D., fellowship-trained corneal surgeon, defines ALL LASER LASIK: “ALL LASER LASIK is the combination of two lasers to correct vision. The first makes a thin flap of cornea which is gently folded back. The second reshapes the cornea. The flap is repositioned without the need for stitches. Prior to surgery, the patient is able to see only the big-E; the morning after ALL LASER LASIK, the patient drives himself for his follow-up exam.” Elizabeth Panton Karkazis, O.D. explains how contact lenses complement refractive surgery in a comprehensive practice: “Teenagers are too young for LASIK and not every adult is a suitable candidate for LASIK. When surgery is not an option, contact lenses remain a valuable tool to satisfy a patient’s optical needs.”

Dr. Peter Panton Discusses Cataract Surgery & Bifocal Implants Dr. Panton, what is a cataract and how is it treated? A cataract is the clouding of the lens inside the eye. Neither drops nor pills can prevent or cure a cataract. The only treatment for a cataract is its surgical removal and its replacement with a clear artificial lens or intraocular lens implant (IOL).

Dr. Peter J. Panton, a graduate of the Brown University School of Medicine, is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and former president of the Chicago Ophthalmological Society.

What is the difference between a monofocal implant and a bifocal implant? In the past, the IOL corrected distance vision only; this is called a monofocal implant. Patients who undergo cataract surgery with a monofocal implant still need reading glasses. Recent advances incorporate a bifocal into the IOL. The bifocal implant allows patients to read without glasses, drive without glasses, and do virtually all of their activities without glasses. What will I experience during cataract surgery with a bifocal implant? Cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis using eye drops to numb your eye; no shots are necessary. The operation takes approximately 20 minutes after which you will rest for a short time before going home. Post-operatively, you will be asked to instill eye drops for a few weeks after surgery. You will have 90% of you vision back within one day and your eye will be completely healed within two weeks. How do I find out if bifocal implants are right for me? While most cataract patients are candidates for this technology, it is best to seek consultation with an ophthalmologist with experience in bifocal implants. If you want to reduce your dependence on glasses after cataract surgery, call Dr. Panton at 708-452-7200 to schedule an appointment.

Fireworks go off without a hitch First July 4 show in four years went smoothly, officials say

By THOMAS VOGEL Staff Reporter

Village officials said the July 4th festivities went well and there are plans to continue the Independence Day celebrations moving forward. Between 3,000 and 4,000 people came to Forest Park’s first July 4th fireworks show since 2012, a significant decrease from years past, Park District Executive Director Larry Pierkarz said in a July 6 phone call. Previous Independence Day celebrations attracted crowds of around 10,000, Pierkarz noted. Following the 2012 show, village officials cancelled the festivities, citing crowd control and traffic issues. This time around, the park district kept its pre-show advertising to a minimum, hoping to keep the number of attendees to a manageable size and attract a mostly local crowd. The emphasis on keeping the event low-key seems to have worked. “I thought it went well. It was great crowd,” Piekarz said. “It was more of a fam-

ily event; it wasn’t overly crowded.” Forest Park Police Chief Thomas Aftanas said his department made no arrests and no fights were reported. Officers were stationed along nearby streets to help avoid traffic congestion. “There were definitely less people than the last year we had it,” Aftanas said. “The last time, you couldn’t even walk down Harrison [Street]. It just wasn’t like that this time. … Even on the park grounds itself, it just didn’t seem as packed.” Aftanas said the crowd seemed to be mostly Forest Parkers, with some out-of-town family members and friends. “I definitely recognized people,” noted Aftanas, who was in attendance. “There definitely were at lot of familiar faces. Lots of families, lots of little kids.” Pierkarz said he has not heard one complaint from residents and some of his staff spent the morning of July 5 cleaning up nearby streets. He said they plan to do the show again next year.

The park district spent around $21,000 on the show, including roughly $6,500 from residents who donated as part of a fundraising effort sent to Forest Parkers along with a vehicle sticker renewal mailer. Reaction on social media was generally positive, too, with residents posting pictures and thanking the event’s organizers. “Everyone in the park district outdid themselves. What a great way to unite our town and community!” Forest Parker Claudia Medina wrote on Facebook. “The fireworks were extraordinary!” “I am really proud that we could so flawlessly bring back our fireworks last night. Congratulations to our park district, police, Mayor Calderone and everyone else,” Forest Park business owner Marty Sorice Sr. wrote. “A big shout-out to all the Forest Parkers who urged the village to bring the fireworks back. Your voice was heard.” “It was a lot of neighbors and their families. You could watch them walking down the street with their lawn chairs,” Pierkarz said. “It reminded me of the old days.”

Madison Street bank robbery suspect arrested 64-year-old Maywood man picked up July 6 By THOMAS VOGEL Staff Reporter

Forest Park police officers arrested John Scudieri, a 64-year-old Maywood resident, July 6 on First Avenue just south of Madison Street around 2 p.m., according to Police Chief Thomas Aftanas, for the robbery of U.S. Bank, 7525 Madison St., on June 29. Officers saw Scudieri “talking with someone” and stopped him, Aftanas said. He was turned over to the FBI and charged

with one count of felony bank robbery. Aftanas told the Review one of his officers recognized Scudieri after the department released images from the robbery. The officer, Aftanas said, knew Scudieri from a previous arrest one year ago. According to a criminal complaint filed in the United States District Court’s Northern District of Illinois on July 6, Scudieri stole $3,118, in a “non-takeover” robbery, meaning he did not take hostages or attract attention during the incident.

Scudieri, according to the complaint, entered U.S. Bank around 11 a.m. and walked up to a teller. He did not say anything but slid a note, handwritten in black ink on a notecard, across the counter toward the teller. “This is a robbery. Don’t pull any alarms. Give me the cash,” the note reportedly read. In the complaint, Scudieri reportedly admitted robbing the bank, claiming he was addicted to heroin and that he robbed the bank because he needed the money.

Forest Park Review, July 12, 2017

OPINION O U R

V I E W

A thousand points of pride

G

ood news can seem scarce, but the return of the July 4th fireworks show at The Park certainly qualifies. Even better news is that it came off without any of the incidents that caused an unwelcome four-year hiatus from what had always been a point of village pride in Forest Park. Kudos to Larry Piekarz and the Park District of Forest Park (including park board members who pushed for the show’s return) for taking the calculated risk that enough time had passed to give fireworks another shot (so to speak). The police and fire departments also did their part to keep the event safe and orderly. The crowd was smaller and less unruly than in the past, the result of an intentional decision to play down promotion and hope that the word would spread quietly. Word, of course, will get out that Forest Park’s fireworks are back, and we’re glad that village officials are encouraged enough to make it an annual event again. The crowds, predictably, will grow as word gets out, but we hope the village will stay firm in their commitment. With adequate precautions, we believe the show should go on. It’s easy to be ruled by fear, but Forest Park has set a good example by refusing to do so. With the return of fireworks comes a return of village pride, literally bursting overhead. But we can also take pride in our own small way for resisting being controlled by fear.

Investment upswing More good news: Entrepreneurs and homeowners are investing in Forest Park. There is probably no better evidence of optimism. The future looks bright enough to risk hard-earned capital. Marty Sorice certainly thinks so, after sinking upwards of $1 million in a significant upgrade of Blueberry Hill over the past three decades, plus his purchase of numerous other bars in Forest Park. House “flippers” certainly think so. Upgrading housing stock is a nice by-product of this real estate “cottage industry,” and they wouldn’t be doing it if the housing market hadn’t improved to the point where they can turn a profit doing so. And where the housing market hasn’t improved enough, a lot of longtime homeowners are investing in their properties with the expectation that eventually it will pay off when they finally sell. We like being described by one online real estate resource (Trulia Blog) as having “a slick city feel without big-city cost.” Forest Park, as we now know, has been a popular draw for empty-nesters from Oak Park among other communities and more and more, we trust, for young families willing to take a chance on an improving school system (Proviso high schools in particular). The permitting process and code enforcement have been streamlined under the direction of Steve Glinke, who heads the Department of Public Health and Safety. That’s a welcome development as long as it doesn’t dilute the department’s oversight responsibilities. Overall, we agree with Marty Sorice’s assessment that “Forest Park is definitely on the rise.”

F

Moving toward a perfect Asshat

itness is a never-ending slog for me. I try, but I didn’t get a lot of help in the “natural-ability department.” Among my problems: I get bored easily. I ran for years. (Not in a row, I mean, but several times a week for relatively long periods.) I ran all I was going to run — at least for now. The problem with running is there are only so many routes. I think I ran all the threemile loops that intersect with my house I possibly could have run. I lifted weights for a long time. Sometimes I still do, but with age injuries pile up faster and, out of necessity, the weights must be lighter, which is demoralizing. So I was casting about for something I could do for a while, rather than something I’d age out of, and my wife said “What about Pilates?” Pilates, for the unfamiliar, is a form of exercise that requires you to expend an enormous amount of effort while moving very little. It’s sometimes lumped in with yoga, which the Pilates people seem okay with but makes the kind of yoga people that put a lot of stock in the alignment of their chakras roll their eyes. Apparently Pilates is too focused on mundane things like physical fitness and not focused enough on how you look in a swimsuit on the astral plane. Pilates doesn’t look like much — a lot of lying on mats and waving one’s legs around like jolly pennants, that sort of thing — but it is hard. Mostly the instructors describe an action they’d like us to take, and then add on in what they think is a polite nonjudgnonjudg mental way “And if you can’t quite do that, just do this” and then describe a minute variation on the original activity that is still largely beyond my ability. Most of the class moves gracefully. I move like something between a hooked salmon in the bottom of a boat and someone just wrapping up a particularly rough seizure. It’s hard to describe the moves in the same way it is hard to describe a golf swing. Have you ever tried to describe a golf swing? It has ten thousand moving parts, none easily described. Try this, golfers: Put your hands in your pockets and try to get a person who does not play to demonstrate an interlocking grip. There’s a

ALAN

BROUILETTE

Every now and

strong chance your hands rip forward out of your pockets of their own accord. I keep calling the various postures and exertions “moves”, which is technically incorrect. They all have names, which everyone knows but me. The teacher will say something like “Okay, now we’re going to do Asshat” and suddenly I will be the lone person in the class not sitting on my own head. Between that and my hearing issues (I already don’t hear well, plus my pulse pounds in my ears for the whole hour of the class) I am always a half-step behind the whole rest of the people in the room. Compounding the problem, there are mirrors on two walls, which is as awful as it sounds. It could be worse, though. The other studio has two full walls of windows. I will never take a class in there. One of the moves that I don’t do gracefully involves lying on my back and then abruptly lifting everything but my butt into the air, assuming approximately the position of someone in an action movie being blown out a door by an explosion. I can very vaguely sorta do that one. There are some — sitting up straight with legs straight out in front of me and crossed, then lifting those crossed legs into the air without moving my upper body — that I cannot do at all. Still, I’m going to keep trying. Every now and again I make the tiniest budge of progress, and it feels like a million bucks. Someday I may even achieve a perfect Asshat.

again I make the tiniest budge of progress, and it feels like a million bucks.
