Committee’s Altenheim presentation pulled from agenda at last minute Mayor says presentation is ’premature’ By MARIA MAXHAM Editor
A presentation by resident Ralph DiFebo and the Ad Hoc Altenheim Committee was pulled at the last minute from the June 14 village council agenda. Mayor Rory Hoskins informed DiFebo, as he was setting up his projector and materials in the village meeting hall prior to the meeting, that the agenda was too full for the presentation, said DiFebo. The presentation, which includes background information and possible uses for the approximately 11 acres of village-owned property, was scheduled after public comment, at which time Hoskins said, “We’re going to go ahead and skip over the presentation on the Altenheim. That’s a little bit premature for tonight.” Later, during his mayor’s report, he provided more context, stating that the village has received comment from different parties interested in the See ALTENHEIM on page 7

Patrick Hardy worked to reclaim Proviso East Proviso East’s outgoing principal reflects on the past 6 years By MARIA MAXHAM

here’s a gas station near Proviso East High School, and not long after Dr. Patrick Hardy began as principal in 2015, he realized that people who weren’t students waited there to start fights with East kids. “I needed my kids to get home safe every day,” Hardy
said. Not to mention that fights outside of school would spill over into the school day. School security guards weren’t allowed to leave campus, so Hardy said he and Assistant Principal Fred Aguirre decided to take things into their own hands. “We were going to reclaim that gas station as part of Proviso East,” Hardy said. So they stood at the gas station door every day before and after school. Hardy took it farther, asking local restaurants to stop serving kids during morning school hours because they needed to make it to their classes on time. He’d drive the neighborhood looking for students who were supposed to be at school. See HARDY on page 11
