our years ago, Chris Ross weighed 70 pounds and was living in a rat-infested abandoned building in Maywood, where he used heroin and crack cocaine and panhandled and stole to support his addiction. Then, he met Forest Park resident John Netherly and his life began to turn around. As Ross tells the story, he was panhandling one day in his hometown of Melrose Park when Netherly saw him and asked if he was homeless. When he answered yes, Netherly told him that he’d be back in 20 minutes. “People would tell me that all the time when I was panhandling,” Ross said. “But John came back. He gave me food and $25.” And so began a long-term relationship in which Netherly functioned as, in Ross’s words, a guardian angel. Netherly runs the nonprofit Bedrock Movement, a one-man movement to help people without a home. Netherly doesn’t romanticize his early relationship with Ross. “Chris was a dangerous, homeless, heroin addict, and drug dealer. He was on his way to death,” he said. “But the Bedrock Movement continued to serve him through thick and thin.” See ROSS on page 8

Turning March madness into gladness
he Chicago Area Alternative Education League (CAAEL) marked a major milestone, holding its 40th Annual Basketball Tournament, March 17-18, at the Forest View Educational Center, in Arlington Heights. Over 300 students from alternative schools played ball in the facility’s five gyms. This was not the IHSA tournament, with coaches and parents criticizing players and refs. This was a lovefest. Call it “March Gladness.” The only sadness was holding the tournament without CAAEL founder, John Martin, but it was dedicated to his memory. There were T-shirts and signs featuring his likeness. Though well-intentioned, Martin would have hated it. He was a humble man, who avoided the spotlight. Martin’s daughter, Sarah Lorenzi, has succeeded him as president, and CAAEL is thriving like never before. The organization provides sports programs and activities for students attending alternative schools. The nonprofit now has 60 schools signed up. A brand new board is leading this effort. They hired a full-time program director and a part-time development director. CAAEL continues to attract new schools, while expanding its programming into non-sports activities, like Minecraft clubs, chess, and bowling leagues.
CAAEL is an alternative universe, where kids are rewarded for sportsmanship rather than the final score. The basketball games are loosely-officiated affairs. Players help their opponents up and congratulate them for their effort — the opposite of trash talk. Games end in a compliment circle, where sportsmanship ribbons are awarded. Many of the ribbon winners have overcome physical and emotional trauma to take the court. When he was 6, David Curiel was shot twice by armed robbers. At 6-2, he has recovered sufficiently from his injuries to play point guard. Benjamin Nieto was failing academically at Peace and Education Coalition Alternative High School in Chicago. But the CAAEL sports program motivated him to raise his grades and he is now on the Honor Roll. Tim Wesner, a junior at Seal North H.S. described how CAAEL has helped him and his older brother Tyler. “I couldn’t handle any male authority when I came to CAAEL,” Wesner said. “I was a shy person, who didn’t want to be on the court.” The 17-year-old junior now plays basketball, flag football, softball, bowling and chess. “CAAEL gets me out of my own head. I focus on being a team member and a team leader. I get outside of myself and identify my interests.” Many students like Wesner have devel-

oped positive interests at CAAEL. It has turned their lives around. Their parents are grateful and many were amazed by the tranquil atmosphere at the tournament. No fights, just high fives. For the 30 teams that participated, the CAAEL tournament is the highlight of their year. Some of the Chicago teams rented hotel rooms. It was like a prom, without the dancing. Over 100 volunteers kept the games and award ceremonies running smoothly. The tournament motivates more schools to join CAAEL. “We’ve added new schools, including CPS schools,” Lorenzi said. “CAAEL keeps growing organically.” To keep up with this growth, the organizations needs more funding. They are looking for companies to sponsor programs and donate matching funds. Donations can be made through the CAAEL.org website. “I like CAAEL because open, honest people are congratulating you all the time,” Wesner said. One of these congratulators was the late founder. “I knew John Martin. I thanked him for putting the organization together. I miss him walking through the halls greeting everyone. I wouldn’t have grown as a young man without CAAEL.” Sarah also misses her dad but finds the best way to deal with the hurt is to keep his dream alive.

Oak Park was once known as the place where the pubs stop and the steeples start – but over the last few years the village, and its neighbors in the western suburbs, have gained a reputation for being the place where brew pubs and restaurants abound. That’s where Oak Park Eats comes in. The new portal, launched by Wednesday Journal, is a local guide to restaurants, brew pubs, recipes, chefs, events, contests, drink specials – just about everything food related you can imagine. The so-called vertical – that’s marketing speak for a venture that combines digital, social, events and print focused on a partic-
ular industry or market – launched quietly on March 16 and is quickly growing a loyal following. It includes food-related business stories you’d find in Wednesday Journal and restaurant coverage by the publication’s beloved longtime blogger, David Hammond – but that’s just the beginning of a veritable smorgasbord of food info you’ll find. Food blogger and local restaurant maven, Melissa Elsmo, has taken the reins at Oak Park Eats and will be dishing out an insider’s look at the area food scene. No guns, no bullying: FPMS students hold rally Students called for tighter gun legislation and more on March 14 By NONA TEPPER Staff Reporter
Amid chants of “1-2-3-No-Guns-On-Me” and homemade signs reading “Save Our Schools,” some 250 Forest Park Middle School students shivered in the school parking lot at precisely 10 a.m. on March 14, braving the cold to join the nationwide student walkout to honor students and administrators who died during the shooting in Parkland, Florida one month before. Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders listened to speeches from classmates calling for an end to the sale of assault rifles, questioning why tighter state and national legislation for gun control has dragged and calling for attendees to cherish every day of their lives, noting the privilege they hold by feeling safe at school but Courtesy of Forest Park School District 91 also calling for an end PROTEST: Students line up outside to bullying at FPMS. Student organizers FPMS as part of a national movement against gun violence. said they were part of Teens Against Gun Violence, a group they formed to stay engaged with issues of gun violence and race after the rally. “If you have a brother or sister that’s younger than you, what would you do if they died? What would your parents do if you died?” asked Ariel Smith, 13, an eighth-grader who helped organize the protest. Dressed in all black, Smith’s sartorial choice mirrored that of many of her classmates, who wore orange and black — the national anti-gun violence colors — that day. Sitting near Ariel at the front of the protest, Anaya Marks also dressed in mostly black and joined the pack of student leaders who prepared speeches. Marks asked her classmates if they remembered when fireworks went off near FPMS recently. When they exploded, Marks thought it was gun shots. “In that moment, I was very, very afraid for my life,” she said. “I thought this might be the day I died. I don’t take things lightly, especially after that day. I thought my family might not get to see me again because someone was angry.” Parents and community members, including Mayor Anthony Calderone, attended the FPMS demonstration. Mayor Calderone and District 91 Supt. Louis Cavallo met with the five student organizers before the rally to talk about their feelings. After about 40 minutes, Principal Joe Pisano thanked students for attending the demonstration, and invited them to share their feelings about the protest with those they trust. “If you do have something to say, write it down, talk to your teachers, talk to your parents, talk to somebody about your feelings,” Pisano said, “because what you see impacts you, and it’s important that if you have feelings, to express them.” CONTACT: ntepper@wjinc.com

‘Enough!’ say Proviso students during walkouts March 14 demonstrations allowed local youth to voice fears, concerns By MICHAEL ROMAIN Staff Reporter
Raneen El-Barbarawi stood atop a wooden box outside of Proviso East High School in Maywood, armed with a bullhorn and an impassioned plea. The Proviso East senior was among high school students across Proviso Township, and around the country, who participated in the National School Walkout, held March 14 at 10 a.m. The demonstrations were scheduled to last for 17 minutes to symbolize the 17 victims murdered at Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14. Another national walkout is scheduled to take place on April 20 — on the anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre that took place in 1999. The Florida mass shooting has served as something of a shock to a country that had, to some observers, become anesthetized to gun violence. El-Barbarawi, however, wanted to address what she described as the tragically routine murders of young people in her own community. “Millions of hearts ache for those 17 children murdered from gun violence, but why don’t we have those same million hearts aching for those who are also murdered from [gun violence] in our own community,” she said as First Avenue traffic whizzed by. El-Barbarawi referenced the murder of a 17-year-old student a week earlier, as well as the March 4 killing of Mikhail Evans, 20, a former Proviso East student who was gunned down on the 1100 block of South 6th Ave. in Maywood around 2:30 p.m. “We must pay respects for those two
students killed in our own community,” she said. “A community is slowly tearing apart because of murders. “Gun violence needs to stop now. Enough is enough! At the end of the day, a gun is a gun,” El-Barbarawi added. “I’m sick and tired of not knowing who I might never see again. Put the guns down!” Meanwhile, less than a mile south on First Avenue — part of which had been blocked off by police to accommodate the East students — a crowd of students at Proviso Math and Science Academy spilled out onto the school’s Roosevelt Road-facing property and chanted, “Enough is Enough. We call B.S. No more guns!” Maddy Norton, a PMSA student who helped organize that school’s walkout, said she hoped the demonstration sent a signal to elected officials indicating that “they know we won’t forget about these events and we will hold them accountable in the future. “Many of us will be able to vote soon,” she said, “and we have the opportunity to make the changes we need in our government. We are the future and we will change it for the greater good.” The student protests garnered a significant number of responses on Facebook, with most commenters voicing support for the students. Some people, however, said the school day was not the time or place for a political protest. “Love you all for standing up to support the demand for common-sense gun control,” wrote one person underneath a video published to the social media site last Wednesday. “You are the future and you make us proud and give us all hope. Stay strong.”
Another respondent, however, suspected that “half of ” the students demonstrating were “just walking out ’cause of not wanting to be in class, not because of the cause.” Whatever the students’ motivation, law enforcement officials both locally and nationally expressed support for the walkouts. “These students are carrying the weight of America on their shoulders as they advocate for smart gun control measures that ensure that school shootings, like the one that shook Parkland, Florida are no longer a part of their lives,” read a statement issued by the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement executives. The organization, NOBLE for short, includes among its members Maywood Police Chief Valdimir Talley. Clarence E. Cox III, NOBLE’s president, added that “it’s obvious that the educational process has been severely hampered by the fear on these very campuses.” In the weeks leading to the walkouts, D209 officials notified families that students would not be suspended for walking out, with Supt. Jesse Rodriguez stating in a letter that students “have a right to demonstrate for a cause. … If parents wish to excuse their children from school to attend such an event or demonstration, that is their right.” The superintendent added that “the school or district will not excuse any student to leave school without parents’ permission” and that the district will address unexcused absences from school by following existing attendance procedures. School districts are prohibited from supporting or getting involved in any political issue.

Progress Center staff voice concerns to Senator Durbin Illinois’ senior senator does a lot of listening By TOM HOLMES Contributing Reporter
U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) recently visited the Progress Center for Independent Living, listening to staff members’ concerns over federal cuts to disability programs. “Part of our greatness as a country is making sure we have a safety net and opportunity,” Durbin said. “There are now efforts to change and water that down. Senator (Tammy) Duckworth (D-IL) and I are working to prevent that from happening.” Progress Center Executive Director Horacio Esparza opened the hour-long session on March 16 by acknowledging the work Durbin has done on behalf of the disabilities community, and then zeroed in on fears that, in the current political climate, funding for disability programs might be cut. Esparza said his staff is already overwhelmed by the 450,000 people they try to serve in suburban Cook County, and that the inability of politicians in Springfield to pass a budget has made the last two years a “nightmare” for the Progress Center, 7521 Madison St., which provides social services to people with disabilities. Larry Biondi, advocacy coordinator at the Progress Center who was born with cerebral palsy and gets around in a motorized wheelchair, used himself as an example, pointing to what he called the “current assault” on Medicaid, or the low-cost health coverage offered to people with disabilities. Biondi said that without the Home Service Nursing Pro-
gram he’d be in a nursing home. “My personal assistant, whom I am able to pay for through that program, got me up today and assisted me with my shower, getting dressed and eating breakfast,” Biondi said. Gary Arnold, whose diagnosis is dwarfism and who is the program coordinator at the Progress Center, contends that the threatened cuts in spending on Medicaid are to compensate for the reduction in revenue resulting from the recent tax reform bill. Esparza added that the irony in cutting Medicaid spending is that it would result in many people with disabilities being forced to go into nursing instead of living more independently with a personal assistant. He said the cost of institutionalizing a person is about $75,000 a year, while the cost of helping a person live independently is under $30,000, so not only are people with disabilities able to live with more dignity but taxpayers actually save money. Another concern Biondi voiced is the Americans with Disabilities Education and Reform Act, which recently passed the House of Representatives. “The disability community is outraged, because this legislation is designed to break the law,” Biondi said. What he meant is that HR620 makes it easier for businesses to avoid complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act. He hopes that the Senate won’t even take up the bill. As a reply to businesses owners who insist they can’t afford compliance with the requirements of the ADA, Durbin said, “We’ll work with you. We don’t want to put you out of

Together we can find ways to make your business accessible.” Geovanni Bahena, another Progress Center staffer who identifies as a Dreamer—someone who is undocumented and arrived in the U.S. as a child—expressed his concern about the weakening of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and the reality that Dreamers with disabilities are not always receiving services they need. After listening for almost half an hour, Durbin reminded everyone that 28 years ago he voted for the ADA and that he is cosponsoring the Disability Integration Act, which is presently in committee. If passed, the Disability Integration Act would expand the services and requirements provided by the ADA.

Video gambling vote coming in November Appellate court overturns circuit court, local electoral board rulings

A political action committee’s quest to put a binding referendum question regarding video gambling on an upcoming ballot proved successful March 16, when the Illinois Court of Appeals overturned a circuit court ruling that upheld a local electoral board’s decision to nullify referendum petitions. Appellate Court Judges Joy Cunningham, Mathias Delort and Thomas Hoffman ruled that the 270 petition pages submitted by Let Forest Park Vote for Video Gaming contained enough valid signatures and substantially complied with state election code, rejecting the decisions of a county judge and the Forest Park Electoral Board. Because the local electoral board “erroneously ordered that the public question addressed to video gaming in the village shall not appear on the ballot of the next regular election,” judges also ordered that the matter will not return to local electoral board. “It is tremendously uplifting to see the court rule in favor of the 3,522 people in Forest Park who want their voices to be heard, rather than letting the gaming lobby quash our right to vote on this important issue,” Jordan Kuehn, presi-
dent of the political action committee said in a statement. “Let Forest Park Vote thanks all of our dozens of volunteers and donors who enabled us to successfully navigate this legal process and secure the right to vote on video gaming in our village.” Objectors could still appeal the latest decision to the Illinois Supreme Court or ask for a rehearing. “I have no idea” if they’ll do that, said attorney Ed Mullen, who represented anti- video gaming forces. After learning late in the game that his campaign rally was supposed to be held at a bar in Forest Park, then-Congressional candidate Anthony Clark cancelled the rally, saying he didn’t want his campaign to be associated in any way with the divisive debate over video gaming in Forest Park. “As an individual who believes in putting people first and valuing what the community has to say, and having some understanding of the video gaming issue, at the end of the day I didn’t think it was appropriate for me to hold a campaign event at a local bar in Forest Park,” Clark said. Three days before the event was scheduled to be held on March 15 at Murphy’s Pub, 7414 Madison St., Clark issued a statement on Facebook, saying that volunteers planned the rally at Murphy’s, but he hadn’t known about the talk’s location and, given his belief in fairness and democracy, he could not in good faith hold any event in Forest Park because he did not believe the volunteers of Let Forest Park Vote on Video Gaming were given a fair shake by the local electoral board, which ruled in January to deny the group’s effort to include a binding referendum related to video gaming on an upcoming election ballot. “I’m not in this for the votes; I don’t take a stance because I think it will make people vote

Second chances from page 1 Shortly after that, Hatcher disappeared. Today, Marian Hatcher says she’s lived a life that most people make documentaries about (in fact, she’s featured on Oprah’s documentary series Prostitution: Leaving the Life). Former President Barack Obama awarded her the 2016 Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award for Volunteer Service. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) recently mentioned Hatcher in a speech for Black History Month. In the Congressional Record, Durbin brags: “Marian Hatcher is a sort of modern-day Moses. Like Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman, she knows the pain and despair that comes from being bought and sold like a commodity.” Hatcher disappeared nearly 30 years ago, abandoning her children, husband and corporate job to prostitute herself on the streets in order to buy crack cocaine. As a child, Hatcher was sexually abused. She repressed the memory and graduated from Proviso East High School, went on to study finance at Loyola University, and later became a corporate accountant with 25 people working under her. But she was attracted to smart men with criminal tendencies. She married a member of the Vice Lords gang who beat her, and she used crack to ease the pain. “When she disappeared, and when things went bad, they didn’t just go bad for her, it went bad for all of us,” said her son Maui Jones, 37, of Forest Park. Jones grew up bouncing between suburbs, attending Emerson Elementary School in Maywood then attending Oak Park and River Forest High School. An Oak Park family, the Hennings, let Jones and his siblings stay with them during Jones’ high school years, bound by a connection through his grandmother’s church. Eventually Hatcher’s drug use got her kicked out of the Hennings’ basement, and Jones’ siblings moved back in with their grandpa George in Maywood. Jones was allowed to stay with the Hennings so he could continue attending OPRF. “I was a pretty quiet kid growing up, passive, afraid of the world,” Jones said. “It was in that house in Oak Park that I learned to find my voice, to be outgoing, come out of my shell.” Until junior year of high school, Jones said he had no friends. But after a year with the Hennings, Jones was suddenly popular. He performed for his new friends, stopped attending school, started drinking and smoking weed, and wondered: “Does anything matter?” His chaotic home life, combined with racial under-representation in school, caused his grades to fall. Eventually, behavioral issues led the Hennings to ask Jones to leave their home, too. He moved in with his mom in River Forest and had almost finished his senior year at OPRF when Hatcher’s husband put that gun to his head. As Jones departed, he turned to his mom and said, “I can’t see you anymore.”

FAMILY AFFAIR: After a difficult childhood, mother Marian Hatcher and son Maui Jones have made amends. Jones inherited a love of theater from his mother but he abandoned his dreams of studying film in college and joined his siblings in Maywood, dropping out of OPRF and getting a full-time job to help support his family. He earned his GED and worked a series of dead-end jobs, struggling with depression. “What must have been wrong with me that she doesn’t want to be here?” he wondered after his mother’s disappearance. After Jones left, Hatcher abandoned the suburban home to live in rundown buildings and alleys. She was trafficked, and her pimp gave her extra crack on Mother’s Day because she cried so much for the children she left behind. In 2004, Hatcher was arrested for violating probation related to a drug charge and sentenced to 120 days in the Cook County Jail’s Women’s Justice Services, which offered her mental health treatment and substance abuse
recovery. When she entered the program, Hatcher didn’t think she was addicted. After graduating and reflecting on her childhood trauma, she felt renewed determination to stay clean and reconnect with her kids. “I had to heal in terms of the trauma I experienced, and the loss of material possessions, trust of family,” Hatcher said. “I was elevated and empowered under the current sheriff [Tom Dart], and obviously he is in my heart forever. He gave me a second chance not only to be employable, but to be all I could be.” For six months, Hatcher returned to the jail every day to volunteer with incarcerated women until the Sheriff ’s Department eventually hired her. When Jones saw her commit to her Narcotics Anonymous group, support other abused women, and keep her promises, he reached out to her, looking for advice. One night, after an exhausting 13-hour workday, he felt burned out and complained

Bedrock movement from page 1 Ross acknowledged that when he met Netherly, his life had become unmanageable. His drug use had cost him his marriage, job and health. But those obstacles didn’t stop Netherly from maintaining the relationship and supporting him. “Everybody would give up on me,” said Ross. “I wanted to stop using but didn’t know how. John gave me resources.” One of those resources was a trip and referral to the Gateway Treatment Center in Chicago, where Ross participated in a residential drug rehabilitation program from which he graduated last May. But a few months after graduating from Gateway, Ross experienced a slip, began using again, and was arrested for burglarizing a car and wound up in the Cook County Jail on Sept. 11, 2017, where he began yet another drug rehabilitation program, his eleventh altogether. During Ross’ four months in prison, it was Netherly who kept coming back. “He was my biggest supporter, even in jail,” Ross said. “He wrote me letters and let me call him, but first and foremost, he let me know that no matter what he was there for me.” Although Sept. 11 is a day most Americans associate with the victims of the World Trade Center collapse in New York , Ross said
to her that he hated the long hours, but finding a normal, 9 to 5 gig would be nearly impossible for him since he lacked a high school diploma. “Nearly impossible is different than impossible,” Hatcher replied. Jones found a job as an interpretation coordinator, and followed his mother’s lead in getting more involved in Forest Park — spearheading the sanctuary city drive last year — and launching his own Oak Park-based nonprofit Echo Theater, dedicated to social justice causes. Their production of Blues for Mister Charlie will debut on May 12. “I struggled through adulthood for a long time, but seeing her come back and then redefine her life, and not just live it but thrive in it, that inspired my second chapter,” Jones said. Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart also noticed Hatcher’s transformation. After a series of promotions, Dart named her senior project manager for the Office of Public Policy as well as the human trafficking coordinator. Hatcher now shares her story nationally as a way to raise awareness about the plight of human trafficking, supports victims, and helps craft national legislation. Jones and Hatcher will be together for a talk, “Second Chapters: An Evening with Rev. Dr. Marian Hatcher and Maui Jones” on March 29 at Live Café, 161 S. Oak Park Ave. “I’ve seen who she was, I’ve seen her at her lowest, I’ve seen her pick up her pieces and put it back together and change her action in quiet ways, like helping me out if I was in a bind,” Jones said. “So while I never got the movie mother-son moment, I realized I didn’t need that. She works her ass off every day to show how she’s changed. While I’m sometimes overflowing with words, she’s overflowing with action. You hold onto that.”

I’m on probation and have not missed one of my weekly court dates to check in. I have a job, sole custody of my infant son, and an apartment.” Ross is being supported by many programs. He participates in a program called Treatment Assessment Screening Center which, according to its website, provides “behavioral health programs that promote positive, life-changing growth,” and sees a therapist/drug counselor once a week for his bi-polar and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders. He has a Link card to help him out financially. But through it all he continues to depend on his faithful guardian angel Netherly. Now when he sees people who are addicted to drugs on the streets, he doesn’t identify. “I think, ‘That was me, but because of John that’s not me anymore,’” Ross said, later adding: “I’ve done a lot of wrong in my life and I thought that there was no hope. When you think there is no hope, there is. You’ve got to keep kickin’ and somebody will come to help.”

Road rage on Harlem Avenue When a Maywood man failed to immediately accelerate after a traffic light turned green, an offender brandishing a gun pulled up next to him and said, “I’ll (expletive) kill you.” A Maywood man told police he was traveling east on Roosevelt Road about 5:25 p.m. on March 15, and was stopped at a traffic light at the intersection with Harlem Avenue, according to a police report. When the light turned green, and the driver behind him blasted his horn. The driver made a right onto Harlem Avenue, and told police the offending driver then accelerated and pulled up next to him in the left lane. The offender lowered the passenger side window, waved a semi-automatic handgun and threatened his life. The victim was able to get part of the license plate number as the other car pulled away.
Man fails to thwart carjacking A man fought and held onto the back of the car, as offenders stole his Kia from Thornton’s, 601 Harlem Ave. The driver pulled into the gas station about 3:32 a.m. on March 18, according to a police report. Just as he finished putting gas in his car, a man pushed him out of the way and entered the car. The driver said he grabbed the offender and tried to pull him from the vehicle. The carjacker finally managed to put the car in drive and drove onto Harlem Avenue, dragging the victim along with him. Once they got on Harlem Avenue, the man let go and called police. The offender fled south toward I-290. Chicago police located the car and arrested Javan Johnson, 22, of Chicago, in connection with the crime, charging him with vehicular hijacking.
Man with gun passes out on expressway A rental car was parked sideways across the First Avenue exit on the Eisenhower Expressway, after a man with a gun passed out drunk at the wheel. Police responded about 7:46 a.m. to the westbound I-290 exit ramp at First Avenue on March 18, where a car was parked across the left lane, according to the police report. Officers approached the vehicle and found a man passed out inside. The vehicle was still running and in drive, and the unconscious driver had his foot on the brake. Entering the car, the officers smelled alcohol. They tried to wake the man and searched him for identification. They felt a handgun in the man’s left jean pocket. The man woke up and tried to reach for the pistol. Police started shouting, and took the handgun from the offender. North Riverside paramedics arrived and treated the man, who said the handgun was his partner’s. Paramedics transported him to Loyola Hos-
pital because of his low blood sugar. Once discharged, he told police he and his partner were in town from Iowa, visiting relatives in Maywood. He said his partner had left the gun in the car that night, as he drove to Austin to visit his aunt. He said he was driving home to his mother’s house when he passed out at the wheel. Police charged him with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, aggravated DUI, no Firearm Owner’s Identification cards for the gun and ammunition, illegal stopping/standing and parking, driving an uninsured motor vehicle and more.
Rogue motorcyclist After driving recklessly through Elmwood Park, River Forest and Forest Park, police caught a reckless motorcyclist in Oak Park on March 16. Officers spotted the motorcycle heading the wrong way and weaving in and out of lanes on Harlem Avenue about 9:13 p.m., according to the police report. They followed him onto I-290 and later followed him eastbound on Garfield Avenue. Police pulled up alongside the driver to try and identify him, since he wasn’t wearing a helmet or face covering, but they couldn’t see because of the glare. After a series of turns, they followed him onto Wenonah Avenue in Oak Park, where the driver dumped the bike at the dead end. The suspect then climbed the fence and tried to run across the Jewel parking lot at 7036 Roosevelt Road. Police caught him in the parking lot, tased him and transported him to the Forest Park Police Department, where they reported smelling alcohol on the man. At the station, police found he had a revoked driver’s license, three convictions for driving while his license was revoked (DWLR). As officers read him his Miranda rights, he told them, “Go (expletive) your mother.” He was charged with aggravated DWLR, aggravated DUI, and aggravated fleeing/attempting to elude a police officer. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, March 12-19, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

Landscaping, fitness equipment dress up Roos exterior
Fitness stations have been installed, a perimeter path has been paved and the ninja obstacle course is ready for action. Things are moving along outside the Park District of Forest Park’s new Roos Recreation Center. Crews have installed three fitness stations outside Roos, each offering visual and written instructions for how to stretch arms, legs, back and more. Attendees can also reference exercise videos via URLs printed on the signs if the illustrated and written directions fail them. Soft, crushed stone surrounds the fitness equipment, to cushion the impact on those working out. “We tried to be pretty generic, so people can do more than one thing on these,” said Rachell Entler, park district recreation and marketing supervisor (and also a village commissioner). “You don’t have to have a background in fitness to use these.” Bike racks have been installed in front of the Roos Center, funded through a grant by the Cook County Department of Transportation. Once the weather breaks 50 degrees, crews will begin laying sod, install benches, and pave part of the Roos parking lot. Executive Director Larry Piekarz said he expects that will happen in about a week. Piekarz also

noted that Roos’ ninja obstacle course and concert pavilion were recently installed. Decorated with red, navy and silver trappings, the ninja course consists of rings, monkey bars, nets that people can climb vertically and horizontally and more. Piekarz said he hopes people will be able to use the ice skating rink the park district plans to install next to the ninja course this coming winter — it all depends on whether or not the sod takes, he said. The men’s and women’s outdoor bathrooms are also complete. Roos is scheduled to open May 26.

Finally, a vote
n a quite decisive head-handing, an Illinois Appellate Court panel last week unanimously overturned the Forest Park electoral board’s lame decision to once again block determined Forest Parkers from voting on video gaming. The binding referendum on whether Forest Park will permit the gaming machines in local bars and restaurants is now guaranteed a spot on the ballot in the Nov. 6, 2018 General Election. No more funny business from Mark Hosty, the ex-Forest Park council member, ex-Forest Parker and continuing bar owner, with his ballot-clogging goofball referendum questions. No more inside dealing from a Forest Park electoral board, rife with conflicts of interest, including Tom Mannix, the village commissioner in business with Hosty. The three-judge panel sent its ruling back to the local electoral board but clearly dictated that its only future role in deciding this long contentious issue is to direct Village Clerk Vanessa Moritz to place the Let Forest Park Vote referendum on the ballot. There is blame aplenty in this multi-year attempt to strip Forest Parkers of their voting rights. But primarily the blame goes to Mayor Anthony Calderone. He has balled this issue up over the years and, in the process, personally created a well-organized, loyal opposition. Calderone is the person who created two non-binding opportunities for villagers to register their opinion on video gaming. Both times the opposition to gaming was overwhelming. That should have settled the matter once and for all. When it didn’t, when local bar owners legitimately pushed the idea forward again, when a newly constituted village council expressed openness to reconsidering approval of video gaming, a strong leader would have said the matter was settled. But Calderone whiffed on that opportunity. The next option was to approve some public discussion with a firm end date and then a deciding vote by the village council. Whichever way that council vote went, this issue would have been clearly settled and, we believe, the village would have moved ahead. Instead Calderone let the issue fester and divide the business community on gaming and then aroused a strong opposition among citizens who demanded a vote. We’ve been festering ever since with ham-handed efforts to block a fair-and-square referendum, with intense bitterness among business owners and an increasingly strong and organized citizen opposition. The latest electoral board trickery in denying a vote in this week’s primary election based on technicalities of petition forms has now fully backfired on Calderone. This wonderful town now faces seven months more of political division until the November vote. And, we hope, it is not lost on anyone that that vote, however it turns out, will come just six months before the April 2019 municipal elections. Fascinating to watch as several of the most avid supporters of a referendum currently say they’re uncertain how they will vote in November. As we’ve said many times, for many people and for one newspaper, this has become an issue of fairness in governance. Video gaming is almost secondary.

earning about another family planning to move out of Forest Park this summer, my friend recently said, “you have to be tough to be a Forest Parker.” It has really resonated with me. Made a list tonight, of 30 families (often with multiple kids) about my kid’s ages, who I really liked and respected, who moved out of town in the past seven years. That’s 30 families who I met from Little League, soccer, South PTO, from Betsy Ross events, Field Stevenson Events, Middle School Events and Cub Scouts. Every family on that list, helped us build our community in different ways, sometimes big and sometimes little, but each family we lost was chasing a hope of something better, and I sincerely wished them the best. So, this weekend while I stood on the sidelines of the home opening baseball game at Proviso East, right on the bank of the Des Plaines River, with hawks circling, a heron flying, and a small pile of deer scat in the outfield, standing on the farthest field from the corner of 1st and Washington Blvd, was something special for me. The once mighty Melrose Park kids we would face on Ruby Field are on the same team as my son, as our young freshmen and sophomore Pirates faced the Knights of North Ridge. Many battles took place on Ruby Field, in Melrose Park, located just north of North Ave. and west of Winston Plaza. Forest Park kids would prepare for these games, a day coaches would advise kids to avoid the Forest Park pool (which would drain their energy), the only game scheduled on a turf field within the district with a memorable high pitching mound, Ruby was undeterred by the weather, this field gave every advantage to Melrose Park. While I remember the many losses, Henry only remembers the single victory, the night he got a ball in the eye from a practice throw gone awry. It was at this field; our Forest Park chant may have been born.
“Forest Park Cemetery. Boom-boom. This is where you will be buried. Boom boom.” But on this Saturday afternoon, at the historic Proviso High School, we were not the only Forest Park Little League family who had graduated from working the dugout on Harrison to meet on the nature-kissed field next to the 68,000 acres of Cook County Forest Preserve, just a few miles up the river from Lewis and Clark’s voyage to the Pacific. On this afternoon, there was a former Forest Park family there, with a son, now a sophomore, in a Knight uniform, who played catcher, just like he did back on our Dowd Field many years before. In a twist of fate, Henry, my son, had to face the former teammate on the mound, wearing his new Pirate uniform. Henry never was able to master the art of pitching in Forest Park, there was no need, as the depth of talent on the mound from our home town was impressive. Those Forest Park boys are now at Fenwick, Riverside-Brookfield, Guerin Prep, Nazareth, St. Pat’s, OPRF and scattered among the suburbs and Chicago, but none of them are at Proviso. Henry, the lone Forest Parker, is a pitcher by necessity. He pushed the count and with grace, delivered the strike out, as he defended his Proviso honor. He let up a few runs, in his debut inning plus, but this young Pirate team, filled with talent from Melrose Park, Maywood and Broadview, together scratched a victory, 13-9, showing the new brotherhood of Pirates, which includes, this year, one Forest Parker. While victories on the East baseball diamond might be few, I will relish this one, even if it was only the freshmen- sophomore game, for a few more days. Just like all my friends who have moved away, I want to have nothing but the best for my children, but the best for my family is here, at this moment, right now.

Open letter to our kind and generous donors of the Forest Park 4 Puerto Rico Fundraiser Dear Forest Park, On Wednesday, February 26, 2018, a fundraiser was held in support of the World Central Kitchen and its good work being conducted in Puerto Rico following the devastation of Hurricane Maria. True to form, our residents, and many local and regional businesses gave generously to this cause. The fundraiser was a tremendous success. Forest Parkers Mike and Katie Redmond performed spectacularly and Pat Malone served up 45
pizzas for the crowd that gathered at McGaffer’s that night. It was a large group that cozied up together in a somewhat small venue and it was great fun. I’m very pleased to report that we raised $9360.98! I will forward these funds to the World Central Kitchen next week, along with a personal letter on behalf of all Forest Parkers. I just wanted to take this moment to say thank you!

or almost 30 years, Oak Park residents have been driving, biking, and walking by Intercultural Montessori on S. Ridgeland Avenue with smiles on their faces as they watch the children at play. But they might not be aware that Intercultural is the originator of our unique dual-language/Montessori approach to education, providing Spanish/English and Chinese Mandarin/English programs for children aged 3 to 6. It’s an approach that has been imitated but not reproduced, and it has gotten us a lot of positive attention with Montessori schools, teachers, and associations. That’s because it works, and I’m so happy to be a part of creating bilingual, bi-literate citizens of the world right here in Oak Park. As my third year at Intercultural begins, I would like to state how proud I am of the work that the teachers perform on a daily basis. That is where the magic happens, and I’ve found that it is true that the teachers are the soul of the school. As an Intercultural parent, I appreciated how hard the teachers work, but now as an administrator I understand and recognize the many subtle skills the job requires. For example: knowing how to observe constructively, and when, how, and how
much to intervene, is the key secret to a successful Montessori teacher. It’s a talent our teachers have acquired through their Montessori training and years of teaching at Intercultural. I would like to thank our teachers for their hard work, and congratulate them on the continued growth of our dual-language program. As we grow, we continue to improve our school infrastructure at the Oak Park campus, including the installation of a new state-of-the-art security system. This week, the students harvested their first vegetables from our new organic garden! And more upgrades are coming as this new school year begins. It is extremely fulfilling to see Intercultural’s continued growth. To me it means that Oak Park recognizes the value of the unique dual-language education we are providing.
