Village Council approves longterm stimulus fund spending plan

Chamber of Commerce to get $120K to promote village, $40K for business grants

The Forest Park Village Council voted unanimously on July 24 to approve a resolution that creates a plan for spending the rest of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) federal stimulus funds.

While Village Administrator Moses Amidei has developed ARPA budgets before, he always took pains to emphasize that they were tentative, and the council had to approve each individual expense on a case-by-case basis. He said the newest ARPA budget will give the staf f more long-term direction. Amidei added that the budget can still be amended, and he fully expects some changes to be made in the future.

The new ARPA budget notably includes $120,000 to help the Forest Park Chamber of Commerce market the village over the next three years and another $40,000

Race in 7th District primary is gathering contenders vs. Davis

Chicago City Treasurer Melissa ConyearsErvin expects to declare candidacy in early fall

While the Democratic primary is still nine months away, long-time incumbent Danny Davis (7th) is already facing two declared challengers, one challenger who hasn’t declared yet, and a perennial conservative candidate banking on the fact that nobody else will run in a Republican primary in the heavily Democratic district.

Austin activist Kina Collins, who ran against Davis twice in the Democratic primary, is challenging him again. She came much closer to winning the primary in 2022 than she did in 2020, and she believes that she can impr on those numbers. Pilsen teacher Nikhil Bhatia announced his intention to run in late June. And while Chicago city treasurer and for mer state representative Melissa Conyears-Ervin hasn’t officially announced her run, her congressional campaign committee has already raised $283,436. In an interview with this newspaper, Conyears-Ervin said she will announce her run in early f all.

Collins said she thought long and hard about whether she wanted to run again, but her supporters ultimately swayed her

“My supporters, residents in the district [and] my donors thought it was a good idea for me to run again,” she said.

Collins believes her campaign can build off of her record and improve on her numbers.

“We’re offering something different to the district, and I think that our field game has expanded, and our support has expanded, and my face recognition and my name recognition has expanded,” she said.

Other candidates

Conyears-Ervin served as a state representative for the 10th District, which fell entirely within Chicago and included West and East Garfield Parks, from 2017 to 2019, when she was elected city treasurer in a three-way race. She ran unopposed in 2023. She is married to Ald. Jason Ervin (28th), who contributed a total of $3,000 to her congregational campaign through various campaign committees.

In April, she for med an exploratory committee to look at a run for Davis’ seat should the incumbent decide not to run.

Local News

Chad Koppie, a far mer from Elgin, ran for various local and state-wide offices over the years. Now he is running as a Republican after mounting an unsuccessful write-in campaign in 2022. According to his campaign, he wanted to tak advantage of the fact that the district isn’t likely to get any other Republican candidates to campaign in both the primary and the general election. The primary will take place on March 19, 2024, and the general election will take place on Nov. 5, 2024.

Ferrara’s Now and Later candy brand gives grants to Black-owned businesses

Two businesses are located in Chicago

Ferrara Candy Company, which is headquartered in Chicago and has a factory and candy outlet store in Forest Park, 7301 W. Harrison St., gave $20,000 in microgrants to a pair of Chicago Black-owned businesses.

The grants were timed to coincide with August, which many Black-owned businesses mark as a National Black Business Month.

The company is giving out a total of $50,000 in “Pause Now, Hustle Later” grants nationwide to “support the go-getters and changemakers in the Black community.” The grants are tied into Ferrara’s Now and Later candy.

The first grant went to Fancy Somebody, a women’s loungewear brand based in Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood. Founded in 2020, the company describes its brand identity as

“as chic as they are comfy.”

The second grant went to Radiant Natural Life, a ve gan makeup brand based in Chicago’s River North neighborhood.

Dave Foldes, director of marketing for the Now and Later brand, said it was important for the company to support emerging businesses, especially Black-owned ones.

“Now and Later is dedicated to supporting Black leaders and entrepreneurs who are making a positive impact in their communities, which is why we launched the ‘Pause Now, Hustle Later’ grant during Black Business Month,” he said “According to the Small Business Administration, 50% of small businesses fail within the first five years due to lack of financial resources. In reco gnition of the hustle of entrepreneurship, we’re proud to help amplify these small businesses.”

Forest Park faces budget de cit, hopes for grants

Village mulls increasing re department sta ng, phasing out leaf pickup

Forest Park has appropriated about $10.2 million more for the 2023-2024 fiscal year than it did during the previous fiscal year to account for major projects, expected grants and re gularly scheduled salary increases.

The appropriations ordinance, which the village council unanimously approved during its July 20 meeting, sets the upper limit for how much money it can spend.

Appropriations tend to be larger than what the village expects to spend to account for unexpected emergencies, grants that may or may not materialize, and any overtime the village may have to pay. While Fiscal Year 2023-2024 began in May, municipalities of Forest Park’s size are required to file an ordinance by the end of the first quarter – in this case, July 31.

While Forest Park does have a budget, it is treated as a “living document” that doesn’t have to be approved by council vote. The village commissioners did discuss the budget during the July 10 special meeting.

STIMULUS Spending ARPA funds

to allow the chamber to provide business grants. It also includes funding for mental health assistance and developing a villagewide strategic plan.

But perhaps the biggest expense of them all — and most uncertain — is the funding to re place the Mohr Community Center playg round. Amidei explained to the Review that the inspection of the reservoir underneath the playg round revealed signs of deterioration, and the project has been paused until the village can figure out the full extent of the damage and what it would take to fix it.

The previous budget was approved during a Jan. 23 special meeting, and by April,

Most notably, the village is considering hiring an additional firefighter, phasing out Public Works leaf pickup and updating the zoning code.

The Forest Park Fire Department appropriations were increased by $376,819, from $4.11 million to almost $4.5 million. The village is considering hiring another firefighter, either another lieutenant or another deputy chief, who would serve as EMS coordinator and follow up on ambulance trips that the village didn’t get reimbursed for. Forest Park officials previously complained about the financial impact of responding to medical emergency calls at the Forest Park CTA Blue Line terminal, because many patients have no insurance and the village has to absorb the cost.

The fire depar tment is also looking to replace air packs – something that it hopes to be able to do with grants.

The Streets Department appropriations increased by $178,532, from $1.97 million to $2.15 million. The village is looking to potentially save money by phasing out leaf pickup and having residents bag leaves for the waste hauler contractor to pick up. Forest Park estimates that it would save between $60,000 to $65,000.

Department of Public Health and Safety appropriations got a relatively small increase of $29,257, from $518,634 to $547,891, to account for the consultant fees for the

it was already clear that the plan would have to change. While the budget proposed spending $150,000 on the playg round redo, the lowest bid came in at $218,285. While the council approved using ARPA to make up the difference, that raised the question of what other expenses would need to be reduced, or cut altogether. The council decided to hold of f on approving another expense — paying the Chamber $40,000 a year for three years to market Forest Park

During the May 23 meeting, the village council ag reed to spend $21,340 in ARPA funding to pay for the evaluation of villageowned buildings — less than the $25,000 set in the January budget.

The commissioners discussed the budget as part of the July 10 special budget meeting, and the results of those discussions were turned into the document that went before the council on July 24.

The new budget ke pt the marketing assistance item the same as the January

long-discussed zoning code overhaul. The village is also looking into getting new software to improve the process of applying for building permits and potentially updating the Forest Park comprehensive plan.

The village is expected to bring in a total of $67.28 million in revenues – a figure that includes grants and funding reserved for specific purposes such as pension payments and the $2.33 million Forest Park Public Library budget, which is largely funded through the property tax the village levies on its behalf. This re presents a $4.21 million, or 21%, revenue increase compared to last fiscal year – something that is largely attributed to potential state and federal grants.

The situation is far from rosy - the budget has an overall deficit of $11.05 million, with the general fund in specific running at a deficit of over $2.9 million. However, village administrator Moses Amidei previously indicated that the village tends to end up with smaller deficits than projected.

During the budget meeting, the commis-

budget but changed several others. Mental health assistance went down from $30,000 to $20,000. The business incentive grants dropped by nearly half, but Amidei said that the drop wasn’t as drastic as it looked. The village would spend Tax Increment Financing district funds on businesses located within a TIF, while using ARPA funds to provide incentives in other parts of the village

“If we have TIF funding, we will use TIFs to help business should the need arise,” Amidei said. “Aside from TIFs, we don’t have a lot of wiggle room in our General Fund.”

Some expenses either weren’ t part of the previous budget or didn’t have a concrete number attached. The new budget set aside $300,000 to help retain staf f — a figure that, Amidei said, Finance Director Letitia Olmsted recommended. And $21,000 was set aside for the four-year strategic plan.

The budget includes several increases,

sioners and staf f discussed the possibility of instituting new taxes, including a cannabis dispensary tax and an additional tax on video gaming terminals. The officials also mulled creating a Special Service Area, which levies an additional property tax within a certain area to fund local services. Such a move would require the approval of the majority of the affected property owners.

The village council approved the appropriations ordinance unanimously and without comment.

allocating $114,000 to re place and add security cameras on village property — most notably at the community center — up from $100,000 in the January budget. And it allocates $230,000 toward playground improvements. Amidei said he wanted to keep it in the budget because the commissioners already approved the funding, and he wanted to have it ready to go.

Commissioner Jessica Voogd, who has been pushing for the ARPA budget meeting for the past few months, asked Amidei to elaborate on how the budget can be changed. He described the document as “guidelines and parameters” for the staf f.

“If changes are needed at a later time, depending on how the pricing is and whether it comes to fruition, I would come to the council to amend the budget,” Amidei said.

Mayor Rory Hoskins said he was fine with changes further down the road.

“This is a road map, but it can be adjusted,” he said.

Oak Park Temple becomes keeper of Holocaust Torah Scroll

Cantor Julie Yugend-Green was the first member of the Oak Park Temple B’nai Abraham Zion (OPT) to see the Holocaust Torah Scroll, which was transfer red to the care of the Oak Park synagogue last month by the Memorial Scroll Trust in London, UK

“The first time I opened it,” she recalled, “I saw how beautiful it was, and I thought about how many hundreds if not thousands of people have chanted and told stories from it. I felt those voices. I felt the history.”

Scholars believe the scroll, which contains the first five books of the Bible, for mally known as the Torah, was created sometime during the last half of the 19th Century and was used in worship for decades in a synagogue in what is now the Czech Republic

Then at the start of World War II, the armies of the Third Reich invaded the country, shipped Jews to concentration camps, and looted synagogues before they were bur ned. Along with other priceless Judaica, many Torah scrolls were stored in the Pinkas Synagogue in Prague.

Green pointed out the irony of the Nazis saving Torah scrolls at the same time that they were burning synagogues

“I think there is some mystery,” she said “as to why the Third Reich was hoarding or collecting Judaica.”

That is why temple members refer to this set of nine scrolls as a “Holocaust Scroll,” and why Green said, “When I saw it I felt the history. I felt the lost generations, all those communities which are no more.”

Max Weiss, the temple’s rabbi, said the scroll will be used as a “teaching tool” along with being chanted at Shabbat services

Weiss recalled that, when he was growing up, many Holocaust survivors were around to tell stories of that nightmare in person. As that cohort disappears, it is his generation’s responsibility to keep the story of the Holocaust alive.

Using the metaphor of a building, “The Story” is built on the foundation of the stories in the Torah but each generation adds a “story” to the structure. If the Exodus is one of the main chapters in the foundational Torah story, the Holocaust is certainly a major chapter in the current and ongoing story of the Jewish tradition.

“This scroll,” said Rabbi Weiss, “is a way for us to honor the memory of the people who perished in the Holocaust, a way for us to honor the memory of a community that

doesn’t exist anymore.”

At the end of World War II, the Pinkas Synagogue in Prague was unable to house all of the scrolls in their care, so they were shipped to London to be cared for and distributed by a nonprofit called the Memorial Scrolls Trust.

Oak Park Temple’s Holocaust Scroll was sent from London to a newly organized synagogue in Buffalo Grove named Temple Chai in May of 1973. Green said the scrolls distributed by the Trust are not owned by the synagogues, which only care for and use them. Temple Chai was therefore a “custodian” of the scroll. So when the Buffalo Grove synagogue closed, it was technically if not literally returned to the Trust, and Oak Park Temple applied for custodianship.

Weiss used the word “holy” to signify the importance of the scroll to the cong re gation. Every scroll, he said, is meticulously copied by hand from an existing one, and every letter must be right.

When archaeologists un-

covered 2,000-year-old texts after World War II, which became known as the Dead Sea Scrolls, the parts that contain sections of the Torah are nearly exact matches for the nine individual scrolls now at Oak Park Temple Green added that the sofers, or scribes, use a quill usually made from a turkey feather, with special ink, and pa rchment made from the hide of kosher animals like cows or deer.

Rabbi Weiss noted that the Holocaust Scroll is being held in honor of Cantor Green, who retired this month.

Pickleball players push park district to get more court time

Park district o cials have liability concerns about sharing courts during tennis lessons

A group of Forest Park pickleball players is pushing the Park District of Forest Park to give them more opportunities to play their game on the tennis courts — something that the parks worry runs up against liability concerns when it uses those courts for kids’ tennis lessons.

Pickleball has been exploding in popularity nationwide, and the western suburbs are no exception. The park district currently has 6 tennis courts at the southeast corner of the main park on Harrison Street. And while the area is surrounded by a tall fence, there is no separation of any kind between the individual ourts other than the lines on the ourt.

holds drop-in pickleball playing sessions during colder months.

The issue for pickleball players is that the entire tennis area is off-limits when the park district offers tennis lessons for kids and teens. During the July 20 Park District of Forest Park Board of Commissioners meeting, a group of pickleball players urged the park district to let them use the courts during the lessons, noting that the lessons only use the three courts not lined for pickleball. Jackie Iovinelli, park district executive director, said that, while she was eager to find a solution, the current stumbling block is legal liability — they simply couldn’t risk having adults in the same space as kids, even if they are under staff supervision.

While pickleball has been around since 1965, the table-tennis-like game has been picking up popularity, sending the park district scrambling to keep up with demand. During the June 16 board meeting, Iovinelli said the park district doesn’t have much room to put in more pickleball courts, even after taking over most village-owned pocket parks. She also said tennis courts are still in

ing place on Monday-Thursday mornings, with early classes starting at 9 a.m. and the last classes wrapping up at noon.

At the time, Iovinelli said that putting 2-4 courts where the batting cages currently are is a possibility, since they don’t get as much use as they used to, but such renovations would still be ways off. She also touched on the concerns about adults sharing space with kids

“Our biggest concern. when it comes to any of our programs — these are children in this class, parents are dropping them off and entrusting us with their safety,” Iovinelli said. “Having strangers, people we don’t know, sharing space is something we do need to be concerned [about].”

Later during that meeting, pickleball player Diana Jackson of Forest Park, urged the rk district to find a way to have pickleball ayers and kids taking tennis lessons share the courts. She suggested keeping the tennis lessons to the tennis-only courts and having the pickleball players stick to the dual-lined ourts. Iovinelli and the park commissioners didn’t respond to her suggestions at the time, ut the topic was included in the agenda for the July 20 meeting

At least 9 pickleball players, including Jackson, showed up to that meeting. Bernaette Smith urged the park district to expand capacity, saying that having players from the gion take advantage of the court would support Forest Park businesses.

“Please encourage more pickleball in our community,” she said. “We’re bringing

people from all over the villages [in west suburbs] to play.”

Jackson urged the board to invest more in pickleball because, nationwide, its popularity was on the rise while tennis’ popularity was declining. She suggested the short-ter m solution of adding pickleball lines to all six courts and reiterated that they wanted to figure out a way pickleball players and tennis classes could share the space.

“We’re not here to obstruct the park district tennis lessons, but what we would like to do is get better utilization for the pickleball users,” she said. “If there any concerns about us using the same gates as kids, open the gates in the back. We’d be happy to use different gates.”

Iovinelli said the issue of adults sharing a facility with kids remains a concer n.

“If we have parents dropping off kids for [any] program, we wouldn’t allow anyone else to interact with the children supervised by our staff, because it’s a liability,” she said.

Several pickleball players came up to talk to Iovinelli after the meeting, with Jackson expressing frustration that “we can’t seem to move past” the safety concerns and emphasizing that the players were willing to work with the park district. The executive director said she was “in their court” and that, while she wanted to find a solution that worked best for everyone, she didn’t have one at this time.

Iovinelli reiterated that point to the Review.

“It’s a complicated situation,” she said.

Blue Line renovations on Near West Side to increase travel times until October

CTA running shuttle buses, recommends using nearby el lines

Blue Line riders will face delays for the next 2 to 3 months as CTA rebuilds the easternmost section ofthe line’s Forest Park branch.

The Blue Line section between Illinois Medical District and LaSalle stations will be closed until late August, and about half ofthat – the section between Illinois Medical District and UIC-Halsted stations – will remain closed until at least early October CTA is using shuttle buses to fill in the gap, but since, unlike CTA trains, CTA buses are mixed with regular traffic, the overall trip will take longer. The station closure is part of a larger project to make 7 Forest Park branch stations more accessible to people with disabilities, while also improving drainage and

replacing the track bed.

Forest Park branch is the section ofthe Blue Line between UIC-Halsted station and the Forest Park terminal, mostly running on the Eisenhower Expressway right ofway with stations in Forest Park, Oak Park and Chicago’s West Side. “Slow zones” has been a major issue for the branch, which the track bed and drainage improvements will help address.

The Blue Line will operate in two segments, with one section running between Forest Park terminal and Illinois Medical District station, and another section running between Jackson/Dearborn station and the O’Hare terminal. For the first part ofthe project, CTA is running two free shuttle buses – a rush-hour only express bus that will run between Illinois Medical District and Jackson/Dearborn stations without stopping, and a regular shuttle that will make stops near Racine, UIC-Halsted and Clinton stations’ entrances

As an alternative to the shuttles, CTA recommends taking the Pink and Green lines, which largely run parallel to the Forest Park branch. CTA and Pace buses connect all Blue Line stations to their equivalents on both lines, and Pink CTA Line’s Polk station is located within walking distance of Illinois Medical District’s Paulina Avenue entrance. Riders can also take the Union Pacific West Metra Line, which has stops in Oak Park and East Garfield Park, but that service is more expensive and less frequent.

After August, Clinton and UIC-Halsted stations will reopen, but the Clinton station will close until October. CTA will only run a local shuttle

Driver threatens Nobs Towing employ

A driver who came to Nobs Towing, 1420 Circle Ave., on July 19 around 2:30 p.m. got frustrated with the wait and ended up threatening the employee.

The man’s car was towed by the Stickney Police Department for being parked on the street during street sweeping. According to the Nobs employees, he became “more and more irate and hostile” as he waited for his car to get released. He re por tedly said that “someone’s gonna get popped” and that, ifhe sees any Nobs truck driving by his house, “they were going to g et it.”

The man left before police arrived. Officers tried to call him, by the calls went straight to voicemail. The police placed an extra watch on the towing company.

Armed Robberies

Two incidents of people driving up to the victims and robbing them at gunpoint took place, but it’s not clear ifthey were connected.

On July 13 sometime after 2 a.m., a man drove into Thornton’s gas station, 601 S. Harlem Ave., to refuel. At 2:18 a.m., three men pulled up to the gas pump next to him in a black 2015 Kia Optima that had been stolen from Chicago two days earlier. The video footage captured two passengers getting out ofthe car and rummaging through the victim’s car. The victim claimed that the men pointed guns at him and demanded that he turn over his belongings. He said the robbers took his phone and two wallets. The video captured the two men getting back into the Kia and driving away, heading south on Harlem Avenue.

The same Kia was involved in multiple armed robberies in Berwyn later that night. Berwyn police gave chase, but ultimately terminated the pursuit in Chicago’s East Garfield Park community.

On July 18 around 2:46 a.m., a different man stopped at the intersection ofRandolph Street and Elgin Avenue to check his phone when he saw headlights behind him. A black four-door Sedan ofunknown make and model pulled up next to him. The victim said four men got out ofthe sedan and pointed guns at him, demanding that he get

out ofthe ca physically dragged the man out ofhis car and hit him with their guns. One ofthe attac rs rummaged out his dog and took his wallet. The men then drove of f.

The police re port that the victim had multiple injuries on his head and arms, but the victim said he didn’t want to go to the hospital.

Dunkin Donuts robbery

A man robbed the Dunkin Donuts location at 7200 Circle Ave., spending two hours inside the shop alle gedly waiting for the crowd to thin.

The employee said the robber entered the location on July 20 around 5 p.m. Around 6:50 p.m., when the store had no other customers, he approached the re gister, pulled a gun out ofhis waistband and told the employee to give him the money from the cash re gister. The employee complied, the man grabbed the money and fled, heading north on Harlem Avenue.

While the police didn’t have surveillance footage available at the time ofthe re port, another employee who was on duty during the robbery co rroborated the account.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, July 13-23, and represent a portion ofthe incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

OUR VIEW

OPINION Stable support for Chamber

It has been an annual tug-of-war in Forest Park. Will the Chamber of Commerce get funding from village hall to market the community? How much? Will the always-modestat-best appropriation be cut back or eliminated for a year?

That’s a lot of uncertainty for a local institution everyone professes to love

But Monday night the village council set, if not in stone at least in something firmer than quicksand, a three-year appropriation of $40,000 annually for the Chamber.

The village also agreed to fund business incentive grants through a Chamber-driven process

The marketing assistance funds will come from the remaining American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds the village received from the federal gover nment during the COVID pandemic. So that means while funds are in place for the next three years, the village will eventually have to make a plan for development and marketing in a post-ARPA world.

Creating a multi-year plan for the remaining ARPA funds was a good idea and one pushed over several months by Commissioner Jessica Voogd. There has been a temptation, which we understand, to look at the ARPA funding as a pool of cash to be dipped into when necessary.

The plan approved by the council focuses those funds on the Chamber, mental health assistance, crafting a needed strategic plan for the village, investing in staff, and possibly funding a playground at the Mohr Community Center.

While there were oddly articulated out-clauses included in the discussion — “This is a road map, but it can be adjusted,” said Mayor Rory Hoskins — it is a more concrete plan than we have seen to date. That’s progress.

A smoother Roosevelt Road

The new asphalt on Roosevelt Road is in place across Forest Park and east to Austin Boulevard. While it has been a bumpy month or two, we’re grateful that this busy state route has been repaved and restriped.

Roosevelt is a key commercial corridor for Forest Park and an area with great potential for future development. Having the basic infrastructure in place is essential to that progress

We will also hope that the state’s transportation department chose a better contractor to repave Roosevelt than the last time around — which does not seem that long ago.

The last repaving effort was substandard from the get-go. And it began to notably deteriorate within months of the last steamroller decamping.

We hope this one will last.

Which Jesus are you talking about?

A focus group of 16 Iowa Republicans was featured on PBS Newshour last week. When the moderator asked the group, “Is it possible to be a liberal and at the same time have a deep Christian faith,” everyone said, “No.”

When I’m with my friends, most of whom are progressives, and the conversation turns to MAGA voters and religion, what I hear repeatedly is, “I don’t understand how anyone can claim to be a Christian and vote for Trump.”

It’s one more example of how polarized we are in this nation, but it led me to ask the question, “Which Jesus are you talking about?”

HOLMES

Here’s the problem on which I want to shed light: if both Evangelical and Progressive Christians claim to be followers of Jesus Christ, why do they describe that following so differently?

To that end I will employ the assistance of Sigmund Freud — who was definitely not a Christian. From his Enlightenment, rational perspective, he claimed that believers in God are merely projecting on a heavenly screen their own wishes.

Freud was right in the sense that we Christians are tempted to create Jesus in our own image rather than the other way around. We tend to frame our picture of Jesus with our own ideologies. We cherry-pick from the Jesus narrative words and actions that support our world views

In this column, I’ll start with white evangelicals Since they comprise Donald Trump’s base, the two categories are almost interchangeable.

To begin, white evangelicals declare that, to be saved, people have to be born again. The Billy Graham Association explains that the term means “that one tur ns from sin and, with his or her whole heart, trusts in Christ as personal Savior and Lord. God makes that one a new person.”

So far, so good. Folks can quibble about the details, but that is more or less what Jesus did say.

But because the devil is in the details, let’s look at how evangelicals, as Trump voters, act out that original spiritual rebirth. Let’s see if what Jesus actually said and did squares with MAGA doctrine and action.

Guns: Can you imagine in your wildest fantasies picturing Jesus carrying an assault rifle?

Rights: Jesus never used the word or the concept. The concept of rights came into the Western vocabulary as a result of the Enlightenment about 300 years ago. Jesus showed concer n for the poor, the marginalized and the vulnerable big time, but he did not talk

about them as having “rights.” Instead he gave the commandment to love. In the Kingdom of God, said Jesus, voluntary servitude is a virtue.

Instead of declaring that we have the right to bear ar ms, the Jesus question would be: Is that what love dictates?

Freedom: An important concept for Trump voters. What I hear them saying when they use the word is, “Don’t you Easter n, liberal elites tell me how to live Don’t impose your world view on me.”

The problem with using Jesus in defense of that view of freedom is that he declared that if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. In other words, obedient following, paradoxically, makes you free. The challenge is in choosing the right leader to follow.

LGBTQ: Jesus never used the term. There is no “proof text” in the gospels on what he thought about the issue that is so fraught these days. On the one hand, he seemed to assume the traditional, binary gender identity model. On the other hand, his compassion for folks living on the margins of society seemed to trump his judgment of their behavior. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone

Big Government: Jesus seemed to assume the legitimacy of the Roman Empire! He apparently thought that rulers were there to keep order in society Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s. In fact, he did not resist the unjust execution of an innocent man, namely himself, by a gover nor who lacked character. Trump and his followers, meanwhile, seem to think of big gover nment per se as evil

Big gover nment might be evil, but don’t call on Jesus as your star witness in the court of public opinion.

MAGA: I can’t see Jesus carrying an AK 47. Neither can I see him wearing a Make Israel Great Again Tshirt. I can see him wearing a T-shirt with the words, “Thy Kingdom Come.”

Patriotism: Somehow, evangelicals make “Love America” a corollary of “Love God.” The problem with that theological logic is you can’t use Jesus’ words or actions to support it. He said of a Roman Centurion that he had greater faith than anyone in Israel, and a Samaritan is held up as an example of altruism

Jesus seems to be saying that loving one’s country is fine, but thinking that America is God’s chosen nation cannot be traced back to having originated with Jesus

In a future column, I will attempt to describe how progressive Christians view Jesus through their own ideological lenses

Fr. Damen paved the way

Fr. Arnold Damen founded my high school, St. Ignatius College Prep

I learned the story of Fr Damen’s life at a presentation at the school. His story of coming from Europe to minister to Americans has parallels with today’s Catholic Church.

The speaker at the presentation was a Dutch historian named Simone Ver meeren. She is a young woman with an engaging personality who makes the story of Fr. Damen (dah-men) come alive. Simone is from the same province of Etten-Leur, where Damen grew up, but the situation there was much different during his time

Back then, the Calvinist majority had virtually outlawed Catholicism. Catholics were not allowed to celebrate the sacraments in public. Catholic churches were closed, destroyed, or taken over by Protestant congregations. Catholics were forced to go underground to attend Mass in secret churches.

Fr. Damen was baptized in 1815 in a “bar n church.” It may have looked like a barn but it contained an altar and space for celebrating Mass. Damen and his family lived down the street. They were well-to-do and employed servants.

Catholic schools were scarce and there

were no seminaries. Damen studied at an institution in Belgium where he trained to beome a missionary to America. here was a great need for missionaries because the American Catholic Church was desperately understaffed.

Damen was only 20 when he and his companions made the hazardous journey to America. After he arrived, Damen was ordained at St. Stanislaus Novitiate in Missouri. He became “Chicago’s Jesuit Apostle,” arriving here in 1856.

Damen purchased property on the Near West Side. He planned to build a church, primary and secondary schools and a college He raised the necessary money and built the Church of the Holy Family at 1080 W. Roosevelt Road. It became the largest parish in the Midwest.

Most of its members were poor Irish immigrants, so Fr. Damen wisely preached about St. Patrick. By the time of the Great Chicago Fire, in October 1871, the parish had 16 buildings. This included St. Ignatius College, which later became Loyola University. Damen was away in New York when the great conflagration threatened his parish. He prayed for the church and schools to be spared from the flames. The fire was only

few blocks from Holy Family when the wind shifted and the fire turned north. Afterward, St. Ignatius fed and housed victims of the fire, regardless of their race or creed

Damen never lost his desire to evangelize America — 12,000 were converted to Catholicism at Holy Family. The parish also produced 235 priests and over 400 nuns. Damen also preached to Native American communities and ordained the first Native American priest.

Fr. Damen died from a stroke in 1890 but his considerable legacy lives on with the institutions he founded. In 1927, the city changed the name of Robey Street to Damen Avenue. An alderman said the name change was needed because, “People are losing sight of the spiritual things.” There is also a street named for him in Etten-Leur, Pater Ar nold Damenstraat.

As I learned about Fr. Damen, it struck me that we again need priests from other countries to minister to Americans. Priests are coming from Europe, Africa and Asia to ease our shortage of clergy. In fact, one in six priests are from other countries.

Rev. Stanislaw Kuca, is the pastor of St Luke and St. Ber nardine Parish. He came from Poland to minister to Americans. Parishioners have welcomed Fr. Stan the same elcomed Fr. Damen. . Damen was
