An empty patch of land along North Lawndale’s commercial backbone may soon house a hotel, a cosmetology school, a business incubator or a food hall for local entrepreneurs. Six teams are bidding to develop 3400 W. Ogden Ave. as part of the city’s INVEST South/ West Program, which aims to drive major residential and retail projects in South and West Side neighborhoods. In North Lawndale, the city’s focus is Ogden Avenue between Kedzie and Pulaski. The city sought plans that would create affordable housing to prevent displacement, support the growth of local businesses and retail opportunities, and improve public spaces along the historic Ogden Avenue corridor, planning department officials said. City officials said they took their cue from the 2018 North Lawndale Quality of Life Plan, a community-driven blueprint for improving key issues in the neighborhood, including the local economy, public health, greening and safety. West Side workers demand area plants give paid time off for vaccines

Black Workers Matter and Cicero Essential Workers Alliance will be co-hosting a vaccination site for essential workers from the West Side and the west suburbs later this month as the organizations push

local companies to make it easier for their employees to get vaccinated. The vaccinations will take place on May 25 and May 26, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., at 1330 S. 54th Ave. in Cicero. The workers partnered with the COVID Equity Response Collaborative Loyola and the Cook County Department of Public Health.

During a press conference on May 20, held in front of the nearby Bimbo Bakery at 1540 S. 54th Ave. in Cicero, the workers urged Bimbo and other companies to offer paid time off so that employees can not only get vaccinated, but can also have See WEST SIDE WORKERS on page 6
