Launching this fall, Chanel will release its first-ever men’s makeup line. Drawing inspiration from house founder Gabrielle Chanel’s habit of borrowing style elements from men’s fashion, the collection flips this concept and infuses the idea into a new personal aesthetic for men. After launching first in South Korea, a global release will follow in January 2019.

Originally left on the seats of the F/W 2018 fashion show, Loewe created a series of classic novels bound and covered with a Steven Meisel photographed dustjacket. The titles, including Madame Bovary, Wuthering Heights, and Don Quixote, are now available to purchase, for those looking to add a stylish touch to their bookshelves.

In a delightfully unexpected partnership, UK-based lingerie line Coco de Mer and the Victoria & Albert Museum have collaborated on a lingerie collection. Inspired by artifacts from the museum’s collection, the luxurious line includes kimonos, slips, and intimates featuring patterns and embroideries straight from the institution’s archives.

When it comes to engagement rings, with increasing regularity, today’s modern bride is looking for something unique, unconventional, and distinctive. Crown of Light’s patented diamond shape and fashion-forward fine jewellery certainly fit this bill, and we spoke exclusively with the COL team about the origins of the brand, some upcoming launches, as well as tips and advice for grooms and brides-to-be on purchasing their wedding jewellery. Can you tell us a little bit about the origins of the Crown of Light brand?

In 2005, our CEO, Albert Gad, envisioned offering a branded diamond cut like nothing else on the market. He was determined to not just create a new brand of the traditional round brilliant cut, but instead to actually launch an entirely new cut that changes the way light interacts with the stone. Crown of Light delivers that with its unique facet blueprint and strategic facet placement. Because of its 90-facets, contrasted to conventionally placed 57-58 facets on a round brilliant stone, this diamond really changes the way light is handled. The word ‘Crown’ in its name gives a nod to both its distinctive crown (the upper portion of the stone) and, of course, hints at its regal appearance mirroring an actual crown. Our brand’s colour palette of rich purple and gold reinforces that royal crown perception. As you mentioned, the Crown of Light diamond is your signature - what sets this cut apart aside from its unique cut?

That’s a good question. The Crown of Light is a proprietary branded and patented diamond cut. There are a lot of specialty cuts on the market today, but very few are granted a US Patent. It received this important designation due to its unique cutting pattern and distinctive traits, and being awarded a patent underscores its wide-ranging difference from any other diamond on the market.

Do you have a favourite Crown of Light piece or collection?

To tell the truth, we have many pieces that we have come to love or consider a favourite. But if we had to pick one, it would be the Crown Brilliant Collection and especially the ring in that line. The Crown Brilliant has evolved into our signature collection and to this day, it’s our best seller. (We say “to this day” about the Crown Brilliant because this collection has been part of our lineup since the launch of the brand. Still, our CEO and design team have been continuously updating the collection with exciting new features.) Our stellar piece in this collection is a natural fancy brown Crown of Light diamond central stone ring surrounded by a halo of white diamonds, set in lustrous rose gold. Because of its special cut, the intense light interaction in this fancy brown diamond brings out the secondary colour flashes in the brown stone itself - flashes of yellow, orange, pink, and even green can be seen. The inherent beauty of the Crown of Light brown stone combined with the warmth of a rose gold setting makes this piece the unanimous favourite.

Can you tell us a little bit about your latest launches / Are there any exciting launches coming for 2019?

One of our most recent successful campaigns has been with the Crown of Light Couture Collection. These pieces feature a dazzling mix of Crown of Light round stones with baguettes. As the name Couture implies, each COL stone is arduously matched for colour, millimeter size, carat weight, and clarity range. The baguettes are hand cut to fit the millimeter size of the COL stone next to it. An added touch that our customers value is that every COL stone is inscribed with a distinct serial number and individually graded from AGS labs, so the customer will receive 16 separate grading reports with their Couture piece. Our 2019 Couture Collection will premiere new pieces featuring an exhilarating mix of Crown of Light diamonds with precious coloured gems and even combining COL with unexpected metals and materials.

What should grooms consider when picking out engagement rings?

Clearly, we hope he considers his bride’s taste and what fits her personal style. We see some definite trending patterns away from choosing traditional white diamonds mounted in white gold, to more adventurous and unique diamond colours, metal colours, and even choosing coloured stones as the ring’s central gem. The millennial customer is very much into expressing their own story and lifestyle and not fitting into the mainstream. Millennial consumers also have preferences for ‘green’ choices, including supporting brands that embrace ethical practices. When it comes to brides, what should they keep in mind when choosing wedding jewellery?

Since bridal jewellery is something meant to be worn continuously for years before upgrading, buying a quality piece should be top-of-mind. For the engagement ring, make sure that the centre stone has been graded by a reputable lab.

The piece must be comfortable, fit well, and be secure. Consider also selecting a style that will not become outdated quickly or that the wearer will tire of looking at soon. Where do your artisans and jewellery creators find their inspiration?

Because we are a team-oriented company, each designer brings their own aesthetics and design ideas to the group. On our diamond floor, the designers work closely with gemologists, manufacturing, and our CEO to create collections that deliver that “wow” factor. Our designers visit global jewellery trade shows, plus industry and art events, from which they draw inspiration. The team stays current with trend reports and media in both the jewellery and fashion sector. With our headquarters in both New York City and Miami, inspiration is all around us.

Crown of Light supports numerous charities. Can you speak to some of these efforts?

Our CEO, Albert Gad, came from very humble beginnings and credits his parents with giving him the values he models for us every day. He believes that giving back is very important and treating your employees with respect is imperative to creating a healthy corporate culture. We are a vertically integrated company operating in 22 countries globally where we cut and polish Crown of Light diamonds. We also design and manufacture our own jewellery. Crown of Light is sold exclusively in Diamonds International (a retail chain located throughout the Caribbean, Mexico, and Alaska.) We hire and train locally in every corner of the world we are located, providing 100% skills transfer to our employees plus outside education. In Namibia, where our largest cut and polish facility is located, we started with 30 untrained employees in one small building. Today, we are the largest cut and polish facility in that nation with over 200 employees and 3 buildings. Our third structure houses our training centre, where local Namibians train the new employees in cutting and polishing and managerial and administrative roles, as well. Our greatest source of pride comes from supporting Baby Haven Orphanage located in Windhoek, Namibia. Our company also supports the financial, emotional, and physical needs of children who lost their parents to HIV/AIDS. Another vital project is the school we are building in Honduras, which will provide many children with a safe and secure learning environment. It will be the largest public school in the area, educating over 100 children without charge. Finally, for the past 2 years we have been involved with OCRFA (Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance). We partner with them on initiatives to fund important research to find a cure for this tragic disease. Is there anything else our readers should know about Crown of Light?

We are still a very young brand and look forward to expanding into new markets and introducing our revolutionary cut to the world. Your great, great grandmother may have worn an Old Mine Cut diamond (the cut dominant in the 18th-20th centuries). This cut has since been replaced in popularity by the Round Brilliant Cut, which evolved within the 20th century. We like to say that the future of diamond cutting lays with the Crown of Light because it is the first diamond cut to debut that changes how a stone performs in light. It embodies the perfect confluence of a vintage and modern cut. We are eager to see what the future holds for our unique brand.
