hello, Brides dream of ceremonies being THE moment. This is true it’s when you pledge your undying love and devotion to your beau. But the reception is when you get to dance, give speeches, dance, eat cake, dance, drink yummy cocktails, and visit with all your lovely guests who came to your special day. One of my favorite weddings to attend was my cousin Heather’s. She worked really hard to incorporate family traditions, like the venue (our aunt’s house) and her own personality. The ceremony was at the family church (I think) I don't remember much of it. I do rememeber the reception. I remember the bridesmaids getting to wear flip-flops at the reception and dance! That’s the point, while people remember the ceremony; memories are created at the reception. Receptions are the life of the party when it comes to wedding planning. So much goes into receptions from choosing your colors, centerpieces, favors and so much more. It is a pinteresters heaven and nightmare all rolled into one. We worked really hard to give you recommendations on themes, paid tribute to the color of the year (Yay Radiant Orchid), and gave you insiders secrets on how to have a fabulous reception. Read on and create some memories!!

TEN TIPS TO AVOID wedding cake mistakes 4 C A R E F U L LY C O N S I D E R A N OUTDOOR RECEPTION. The weather can change quickly and cause multiple problems, such as melting frosting and insects.

5 C A K E D E L I V E R Y M AY S E E M L I K E A N U N I M P O RTA N T F E E . However, it’s just the opposite. Bakers are highly trained to safely transport and set up the cake. Chances of the cake being damaged are much higher when it is taken by a person who may not know how to properly transport it.

6 N E V E R M OV E T H E WEDDING CAKE AFTER IT HAS B E E N D E L I V E R E D A N D S E T U P. 7 THE CAKE IS THE CENTER OF THE RECEPTION. Brides should not allow outside opinions to influence her decisions in her choices of her dream cake.

1 P ROV I D E A C O LO R S A M P L E . It is extremely important to specify

the colors to avoid any discretion.

2 TA K E T H E T I M E TO LO O K I N TO A L L O P T I O N S AT LO C A L BAKERIES. Do not limit your options. Make appointments and taste at multiple locations. Be attentive to each bakery’s quality of detail in their work.

3 O R D E R I N A DVA N C E . While it may seem early, allow about six months advance upon ordering. This time will give the bakery plenty of time to perfect the design and clear up any questions. Also, this gives the bride a manageable payment schedule.

8 I T I S E S S E N T I A L TO C L A R I F Y A L L E X P E C TAT I O N S W I T H T H E B A K E R . The bride’s opinion

is a high priority; however, the baker should not be micromanaged. They have a professional opinion on what may or may not work. Keep in mind, cakes are their profession.

9 A REALISTIC BUDGET S H O U L D B E E S TA B L I S H E D BEFORE SHOPPING FOR CAKES. 1 0 A B R E AT H -TA K I N G WEDDING CAKE IS ESSENTIAL FOR THE PERFECT RECEPTION. A professional baker can most likely meet expectations better than someone who bakes as a hobby.

ASK THE EXPERT

TOP 7 MISTAKES from linen and floral experts 1 . D O N ' T WA I T U N T I L T H E LAST MINUTE If you wait until the last minute to book your venue, you may not get one on the date you like. If you wait to order table linens and chair covers until too late they may not arrive in time. If you wait to book a florist the flowers you wish to have may not be able to be found on short notice. The bakery needs your order timely. Etc. knowing your time frame will save you stress, worry and money.

2 . TO O M ATC H Y- M ATC H Y Too often brides will choose flowers or linens that match identically the colors of their dress or their bridesmaids dresses. Choosing colors that compliment each other can make all the difference in the world. Pairing complimenting colors reduce the amount of clash and make a smoother easier on the eyes look. Choosing a flowers for the reception should compliment the colors used in the wedding but not match identically. The same goes for the table linens and chair covers. If everything is the same exact color it will all run together and items will be overlooked. It defeats the purpose of decorating. While on the other hand allowing these two to work together will create an ultimate setting.

3 . C O LO R O R N O C O LO R Color can be very effective in decorating your reception. Be sure your colors go together tastefully and don't be afraid to use color in things like table linens and chair covers. Many brides will stick to the ordinary white, off white, and or black lines which is ordinary. But adding that extra punch to the decorations will definitely be noticed. Even if it is just at the cake table or registry table where it will be most noticed. Remember To take into consideration your photographs. Using table linens off different texture and color make these pictures stand out.

4 . TA B L E L I N E N S One big mistake is not getting the right size linens to cover the tables. Don't leave your table legs exposed. You want to be sure your linens are floor length, exposing the legs of your table is a big no, no.

5 . C H A I R C OV E R S Chair covers compliment the entire setting and finish the look of the room. Just be sure to know the style and size of the chairs. Leaving the chairs uncovered could leave you dissatisfied with the whole look you have tried to accomplish. If chair covers are not in your budget or the chair doesn't need a full cover, try a sash to bring in the pop of color.

6 . A R R I V I N G L AT E O R L E AV I N G E A R LY One thing you can do to get to the reception timely is to already have the brides family and brides pictures taken before the wedding so that the only remaining pictures would be that of family of the groom and bride and groom together. The flip side, guests came to see your special moments and congratulate you on your special day. Be sure to greet and thank each guest before making your grand exit.

7. DON'T BE SURPRISED All of your vendors should have you sign a contract. Be sure you know what's in it. For example--be sure you know if your venue allows open flame if you plan on having candles. Know your start and stop times and when you can set up. Make sure you make contact with all vendors 2-3 weeks before your date to be sure everyone is on the same page. Make a plan for who will pick up, clean up, returning rentals, etc.

PRETTY IN PANTONE radiant orchid

COLOR OF THE YEAR

Radiant Orchid is the Pantone Color of the Year and for good reasons! This smooth color can work for all seasons, venues, and for all brides. Pantone kept this secret tucked away all year, but now it’s a free for all for 2014 with this fun, sophisticated color. This purple-cousin is a great accent, from little details like small flowers that get tucked away in your bouquet to a great pair of shoes. If you’re feeling adventurous, give your bridesmaid’s an orchid makeover! A dress in this cool color will make a fun, but still romantic, statement. The striking hue is sure to compliment all body types and complexions. The groomsmen can get in on the fun, too, with a great Orchid pocket square or cufflinks. Radiant Orchid can work with nearly every other Pantone color. Creams and greens create an organic palette while oranges and teal elevate this color to a brighter scheme. Different shades of Radiant Orchid make it easy to blend in with the rest of your special day. You can have a lighter version of it tucked away in the place cards and a bolder splash in your accessories. With this non-traditional color, the fun is in the creativity. Add it to a headband or a gemstone ring. This hue reaches across the color wheel and highlights pinks, blues and purples. Add its namesake flower to your arrangements so your guests can enjoy the smell and vibrant color of the purple orchid. For neutrally colored weddings, this muted purple will add some interest and pops of color without standing out too much. For brighter wedding schemes, Radiant Orchid creates an anchor to your other colors; a vibrant backdrop to highlight the brighter colors. This bold color should compliment you as a bride and highlight the details of your special day. This color of the year is bound to make your special day the wedding of the year. photos by jill lauren photography

THE VISION Chevrons! Most of our office staff are fairly obsessed with chevrons. So, we chose chevrons as a central theme for this reception issue. A theme doesn’t have to be something like “Babes on the Beach” or “Fairytale Wedding” but instead can be colors or even geometric shapes. The idea is to create a specific ambiance. This weddings colors were fuchsia and navy blue with white accents. We emphasized simple lines and colors to create a simple, sophisticated look. The modern lines of the venue (The Roof) leant themselves well to this simple sophistication.

THE DRESSES Hint! There were two. Each of our reception photo shoots this issue have two dresses; a wedding dress, to fit the theme, and a fun reception dress. Our thoughts of simple sophistication spread through to the dress. Our staff opted for a wedding dress with simple lines and small detail to match our modern bold and beautiful theme. (Dress provided by Alfred Angelo) Amanda’s reception dress was a gorgeous high neck lace dress (provided by BHLDN). For fun groom choices check out our “For the Groom” section.

glitzy glamorous gold THE VISION Gold is huge this year. Everything from gold dresses to gilded gold wedding favors. After seeing the runway shows with gold, gold gold. We just had to design a reception with a gold theme. Gold is tricky because just a tad too much and you can turn a wonderfully elegant affair into a gaudy disaster. We decided to incorporate gold accents into a yellow and cream themed reception to go for the most glamorous affair.

POPCORN BAR We know this is elegant, classy and timeless but even queens have to have fun! We decided to create a popcorn bar. Not only did we find adorable popcorn bags to put the popcorn in but the golden tones of the popcorn matched perfectly. Instead of candy, wine or anything else create a popcorn bar with different flavors, seasonings for your guests to create a crunchy snack towards the end of the night.

THE GUESTBOOK Sometimes simple is just what you need! We selected a gorgeous Guestbook from Compendium. It provided an adorable story of love amongst the pages where your beloved guests will sign. Depending on the theme and atmosphere of the wedding sometimes a simple book is preferable to anything else.

ASK THE EXPERT

TOP 9 MISTAKES from a fantastic florist 1. SELECTING THE RECEPTION VENUE BEFORE A COMPLETE GUEST LIST Booking a venue because you have always loved it or it is available on your date without an accurate guest list can create quite a disaster. It is easy to guess the number of guests but extremely hard to cut the list when all is said and done.

2 . N OT H AV I N G A N EXPERIENCED WEDDING C O O R D I N ATO R You might benefit from a friend or family member who wants to be your personal assistant on your wedding day, but don’t confuse that role with the absolute necessity of a wedding coordinator. Not only will he/she meet with you before the wedding, manage your rehearsal and coordinate your whole wedding but she will assist in making your dream reception come true.

3 . B O O K I N G YO U R F LO R I S T L A S T Couples should begin the process of booking vendors early by speaking to at least one vendor from each category before making final decisions. You can get an idea of what the true costs will be for your wedding and perhaps have a better handle on spreading the budget.

4 . U S I N G O N E C O LO R O F F LO W E R A lot of brides try to match the flowers to the bridesmaid dresses. The right mix of colors and flowers will add great depth and texture to your photos and give the reception a more unified feel. Flowers are a great way to choose accent colors.

5 . N OT S E E I N G T H E B I G PICTURE Communicate your vision to your wedding planner and trust them to coordinate your vision with all the vendors, (florist, linens, and lighting). Relax, put trust in your vendors and remember why you hired that amazing talent!

6 . N OT K N O W I N G YO U R F LO R A L D É C O R B U D G E T With so many avenues to find inspirations for your wedding flowers, keep in mind that most of the photos you find on Pinterest or the internet may be well out of your budget. A really good florist will be able to take your inspirations and offer you options within your budget.

7 . R E F U S I N G TO B E F L E X I B L E Look at as many pictures as you can before deciding anything. Look for what really appeals to you. But it is a big mistake to have your heart set on a specific flower that matches exactly. An experienced floral designer will be able to find a pattern in your selections and will ask all the right questions to be able to suggest a plan that fits your unique personality and vision.

8 . H AV I N G T H E S A M E D É C O R O N E AC H O F T H E R E C E P T I O N TA B L E S Look at having at least 3 different types of table decor. One tall showy arrangement, a low arrangement and the third option can be an opportunity to repurpose the bride’s maid’s bouquets by grouping an empty vase with candlesticks. Once the wedding party photos are finished have your maids place their bouquets into the empty vases.

9 . N OT H AV I N G A P L A N F O R T H E F LO W E R S A F T E R T H E RECEPTION Let’s face it… there is only so much room for the reception flowers at your family’s home. Ask your florist or planner to make arrangements for the flowers to be delivered to the local hospice home or to several nursing homes. It will truly make a difference in someone’s life when you share the joy of your special day.

REAL WEDDINGS

hayleystetson photography by eternal bliss photography

THE BEGINNING

We actually met through my best friend almost 6 years ago. I was extremely sick but she asked if he could come hang out at my mom’s house. I said he could as long he brought Claritin and sour jelly beans… He did. We started dating a few months later.

T H E P RO P O S A L We had a trip planned to San Antonio to celebrate both of our birthdays. A few days before we had a get together with our families for my birthday. After eating and hanging out he told me he had to give me something for San Antonio, I argued saying I didn’t need anything for that trip. I finally gave in and went inside. He dug in his golf bag and got down on one knee, I started crying and can’t really tell you what was said because it was a blur to me.

FOOD + DRINKS We had chicken, green beans, potatoes and bread for dinner. It was something simple and easy to eat that I knew pretty much everyone would eat. The drinks were purchased from the bar that the Shack and the Back was in charge of.

T H E F LO W E R S I had actually done my Bouquet back in March originally. As my wedding got closer my colors became more vibrant. AS the school year got started I kind of forgot about everything until the day before my bridals. The night before my bridals I decided I wanted a different bouquet, except I had to work the next day. My mom went to the store and bought the sunflowers that I wanted and came up with my bouquet while I was at work, I actually didn’t see it till I was ready for my bridals.

THE DRESS I have always heard how much fun finding a dress was. We had gone once to a store here in Odessa and I didn’t find any, in fact it really frustrated me. I knew I wanted something simple and nothing huge but just couldn’t seem to find one. My mom, Kira (one of the bridesmaids) and I went to Lubbock one weekend, again it was terrible for me, and the place I went kept bringing me over the top dresses. I finally found my dress at Absolute bridal in Midland, they were so helpful and nice.

THE VISION I wanted a fall wedding. I love all the deep, rich colors of the fall, but I also had to incorporate the Fire Department into our wedding which is where the ring bearer in the truck came in. I honestly couldn’t have done any without my mom and Christina who did so much work, drilling logs, painting signs, and coming up with ideas of their own to make our day the best it could have been.

REAL WEDDINGS

FAVO R I T E M O M E N T My favorite part was the ceremony and the friends and family being around to witness it. Stetsons favorite part was the celebrations with the ones we love around us.

M U S I C + F I R S T DA N C E First Dance- Look at you girl by Chris LaDue--- Stetson wanted this as a first song. Father/Daughter- I Loved Her First. Mother/Son- Hope You Dance---Stetson’s mom had dedicated this song to him when he was much younger. We actually had a song that we danced to right before we left, it was originally our first song, I Cross My Heart by George Straight

B E S T A DV I C E I Don’t stress, the actually wedding is a blur. I never would have noticed if something wasn’t perfect. I had to ask my friends and family about things because I didn’t notice or remember.

THE FUTURE We are actually currently in the process of buying a house. We also would like to go to a Sandal’s resort again in the next few years!

REAL WEDDINGS

&* ryan

photography by Lauren Clark Photography

THE BEGINNING Ryan and I are high school sweethearts. We started dating in the 7th grade, bumped elbows a few times and went to the movies. We took a break in the 8th grade, when I dumped Ryan because he was to short…. Freshman year Ryan grew at least 2ft and we’ve been inseparable ever since. After high school we both ended up at Texas A&M enjoying the college life together.

T H E P RO P O S A L Ryan proposed in Breckenridge, CO. We were going on a family ski trip. We decided, the

- 50 -

trip, wasn’t going to be possible, until one day the hotel was booked and we were going. Our family and close friends were all there in Colorado with us. The first day of skiing was about over and everyone was getting really tired, when Ryan insisted that we go up the mountain one more time and then call it a day. Ryan skied ahead of everyone so that we couldn’t see him anymore and pretended to bust. This is not uncommon because Ryan is normally trying all sorts of new tricks on his snowboard. I skied up to him making sure that he was ok and didn’t hurt anything. He was

a nice, relaxing day, enjoying getting to see all my friends and family. The day was for Ryan and I, but I also wanted to get to see everyone who traveled from all over the state to see us get married. Ryan and I are very laidback so the idea of having anything formal about our wedding just wasn’t us. We are easy going, country people and that’s how I wanted my wedding to be. I envisioned the perfect night with perfect weather. I envisioned marrying the man of my dreams and dancing the night away with all my favorite people. Everything was so much more than I ever could have imagined.

FAVO R I T E M O M E N T S Ryan and I both agree that our first dance is something that will stay with us forever. I will never forget the feeling of being able to dance with your husband for the first time. We had 350 people at our wedding and all eyes on us, but it felt like Ryan and I were the only ones there. Our good friend Ross Cooper wrote our first dance song for us and it couldn’t have been more perfect. It was my first time to hear our song, but Ryan sang every word to me. The song could have lasted 10 minutes and it wouldn’t have been long enough.

rolling around pretending to hold his ribs, claiming that they really hurt. All of a sudden he was unbuckling his boots and a shining ring was sitting in his hand. In true Ryan fashion he said,” Welp, Will you marry me?” After a few seconds of being in shock and Ryan having to ask again, I said Yes! The rest is history!

THE DRESS I took my mom, maid of honor, sister-n-law, and one other bridesmaid with me. The second bridal store in Austin had exactly what I was looking for. I had an idea of what I wanted, finding

the right store was the problem. I tried on a few other dresses just to make sure I had found the right one, easily realizing that the other dresses just weren’t for me. I knew right away when I put on my dress that it was the one! The lace was exactly what I had envisioned and the simplicity of the dress was just me! We were supposed to go to a couple more bridal stores that same day, but after trying on my dress, I canceled and we went to happy hour to celebrate finding the dress!

FOOD + SWEETS + DRINKS For the wedding we chose fajitas. If you know Ryan and I, then you know that we eat Mexican food as often as possible. Anything with a tortilla or chips and salsa, we love! For rehearsal we had BBQ and our wedding we had Mexican food, our two favorites! The drink choices were Coors Light, Miller Light, or Margarita. Our specialty drink of the night was Crown N Coke, a shared favorite drink between the Bruton and Wied families. Ryan and I just aren’t dessert eaters. We are normally to full to eat dessert from the main course. We didn’t add any extra dessert

B I G G E S T S P L U RG E Ryan and I have a different wedding splurge than most. Our splurge was definitely our venue. We were engaged for 19 months and it took every bit of that to build Cotton Creek Barn. We worked day and night and longs hours on the weekends, while holding down full time jobs as well to build Cotton Creek. It was a lot to do, and a lot of stress, but definitely worth it in the end. My wedding day means so much more to me because of Cotton Creek. I can truly say that my wedding day was a reflection of Ryan and me from the food we served to the venue we built. One more splurge was definitely the videographer, but it was so worth it! Being the bride, you miss so much of the wedding and the video captured it all! I would have 5 videographers if I could! Our video was amazing and something that I will have forever!

make your wedding about you! It’s your day! The day goes by so fast! Choose Fajitas because it’s what you love! Wear boots or flats, because what if all you can remember is how bad your feet were killing you in those super cute heels. Spend time on the things that you want to remember! The little things make your

wedding day so special! Lastly, enjoy the imperfections! You cannot control everything. I handpicked my flower girl dresses and had them altered to fit the girls and from the moment my niece Selma put it on she hated it! Looking back, the dress was around her waist most of the wedding and reception! The pic-

tures are hilarious, but I wouldn’t have it any other way! Sometimes the imperfections make for the best memories!

THE FUTURE We are trying to get to the country! We are currently living in town in Lubbock, TX. We have 3 dogs, Colt, Buck, and

Maggie that need a much bigger backyard. We both grew up living in the country in-between the cotton fields and can’t wait to get back out there. Now that we aren’t building a venue and planning a wedding we plan on spending more time with friends and family! store!

ASK THE EXPERT

TOP 9 DESIGN MISTAKES from a dynamic design team 5. LIVING IN A PINTEREST FA N TA S Y W O R L D This tip is in direct correlation with the last suggestion. It’s time to purge your wedding boards and get serious. Ask yourself some important questions. Are these ideas cohesive? Will this work in the venue I have chosen? Can anyone really make this cake?

1 . C A R R Y I N G YO U R C O LO R S C H E M E TO O FA R

6. DON'T BE ORDINARY AND BORING

Don't feel like you have to everything in your reception and ceremony the same color. When you do this your wedding tends to look more like a prom.

Make your decore’ unique to and your fiancé. Guest enjoy knowing something about you. If you enjoy art, music, or sports, its nice to incorporate a few of those elements in your vision.

2 . S P E N D I N G B E YO N D YO U R M E A N S

7 . G I V I N G I N TO D I Y P E E R PRESSURE

You can achieve a great look without going into debt. We always suggest candlelight as a great way achieve this and its always works regardless of your style. Also, repurpose flower arrangements and items that you have used in the ceremony and move to your reception.

Just because you can do it yourself doesn't mean you have to. Our mantra at Southern Elegance Design is “when it stops being fun its not your dream wedding”. Don't let stressors get in the way of one of the best experiences of your life. Only take on what you truly enjoy.

3 . H AV I N G TO O M A N Y G R E AT I D E A S Try to decide on a style and narrow your look. Often brides will spend lots of time at clearance sales, estate sales and garage sales and end up with a hodgepodge of items that may be great separately, but when arranged together may look like a yard sale.

4 . OV E R D E C O R AT I N G If you have great architecture at your venue let it shine. Don't clutter up the space.

8 . B O R I N G G U E S T S TA B L E S Color or texture can dress up a table scape. You can easily do this with a runner or table topper.

9 . A S S U M I N G YO U R B R I DA L PA RT Y I know that most Brides utilize there closest friends and family for these jobs and many more and it often works out beautifully. But if you think about it these are the most cherished guests at your entire wedding. You want these people to truly enjoy this time with you.

Sangria is a great option for vineyard themed weddings. (Check out our Elegant Vineyard Affair it’s where we got the idea!!) This is something super easy that you and your bridesmaid can make for your reception or any other get together you are having.

Because this is the reception issue, and Pinterest, Instragram, Facebook are overflowing with do it yourself ideas for receptions. You can create your very own signature cocktail without employing a fancy mixologist. Not a drinker? No worries! Substitute sprite for alcohol in the recipes and create a yummy mocktail. Check out some do it yourself cocktails for your reception day, or while you’re planning … - 56 -

for the groom

photos by CJ Duncan Photography

We just finished our epic ultimate dress issue and woefully ignored the groom! This issues groom section focuses on all of the fab accessories that a groom can wear on your special day. Brides get reception dresses as well as wedding dresses but the groom doesn’t get to change. Here are some fun ideas to glam up your dude. After all … it’s his day too!

C H O O S I N G A C O LO R Sometimes it’s really hard to choose wedding colors. This becomes even more complicated when you consider what the groom needs to wear. Now we know grooms might be weary of sporting a pink bow tie. And that’s okay, you want your groom to be comfortable. Choose a fun bright color for your groom, but let him have a say!

TA N I T U P Black suits are the standard, and often a good option. However, tan or beige suits create a great new look for grooms. Sometimes, tan suits can be used in more casual weddings or when paired with the appropriate ties can jazz up a grooms outfit.

- 58 -

FOR THE GROOM

ELEGANT GREY Grey suits paired with dark jewel toned ties create a wonderfully elegant but unique look for any groom. Grey suits are a great option for any elegant wedding by adding dimension to a suit without creating a casual look like a lighter color would.

- 60 -

A E U RO P E A N TWIST Spiff up your groom with a dash of European flair. Get creative with ascots. Having your groom sport an ascot for your special day creates instant elegance with a pin. You have to be careful though, ascots should be in muted greys or blacks to add a touch. If you prefer bright colors we’d recommend a bowtie.

REAL WEDDINGS

jamie and* annabelle photography by Lissa Anglin Photography

THE BEGINNING I’m from Venezuela and was in Midland for some work training. Since I was new in the country one of my coworkers invited me to a barbecue at his house. His neighbor (Jamie) happened to be a Chemical Engineer, just like me, and knew a lot about Venezuela because he worked with a Venezuelan. I really enjoyed the conversation. Every other month I had to go to Midland for work. After probably 8 months we started actually dating, not just hanging out with friends. Everything was incredibly smooth; it felt like it was just meant to be.

T H E P RO P O S A L It was in the beautiful Meyer Symphony Center (Dallas Symphony Building) on February 15th 2013. As soon as we started dating Jamie bought season tickets for the Fort Worth Symphony, probably 10 shows for the following 6 months. Everybody was concerned that he spent that much money with such a long term plan on someone he just started dating. He told people that he was sure that the this

relationship was a lot more than just a casual date. We had a blast in every show. Based on that and the fact that there was no show during those days in the Fort Worth Symphony we went to the Dallas Symphony to remember good times and to confirm that it was not a casual date, we got engaged there!!!

THE DRESS I did not have a good experience when I went to a couple stores to look for dresses. So I decided to go online, the safest way I could, Ann Taylor. Love her style and I found the perfect dress! Took me one exchange, because the first dress I got was a little big.

FA M I LY TRADITIONS From my country (Venezuela) we have a dance called “the Hora Loca." This is close to an hour of dance music where everybody has to dance and wear a funny hats.

F I R S T LO O K Yes, I loved the idea of having the opportunity to enjoy that private moment with Jamie, share our feelings before the ceremony. We felt a lot more relaxed and close after the first look.

FOOD + DRINKS All very simple, Italian food from Johnny Carinos, drinks we had a bartender to serve vodka,

- 66 -

beer, crown and wine from Lubbock (Llano).

B I G G E S T S P L U RG E Photography. It sounds silly, and it took me a while to understand how important was to get a good photographer. I wanted to keep everything very simple under the initial budget but get a great photographer should be the first step in the wedding planning. I can’t tell you how happy we are with Lissa’s work.

THE MUSIC First Dance: we had two songs (half and half) Love song – original from The Cure, but we had the Adele version. We love the lyrics! To have some fun

and since we were taking dance lessons, we added a Merengue song “A pedir su mano” from Juan Luis Guerra. Great lyrics in Spanish and I wanted to break the ice pretty quick and show to my family how good Jamie can dance Caribbean music! During the reception we had Caribbean music and country music. A little bit from both cultures. We put a lot of work on the ceremony music!

F LO R A L D E S I G N Mainly roses and light colors, based on ideas I got from magazines. Andrew (Market Street) did a great job matching the bouquet ideas I sent to him/

BEST PIECE OF A DV I C E Don’t forget to have fun during the process and remember the real reason of the wedding, celebrate the union and the love between the two of you, is not all about the invitations or the centerpieces sometimes is good to remember the basics

THE FUTURE Enjoy life together, with the certainty that we found real love! Maybe trips to Venezuela are in their future!

THE BEGINNING

kendra

gregory - 69 -

Greg played soccer with my best friend’s boyfriend (now husband) and they introduced us in 2010. We talked on and off for a couple of months, but I would not give him much of a chance. Once I finally decided to hang out with Greg I really liked him. A couple of weeks later Greg asked me to “be exclusive.” I thought his wording was impressive, a little old school, but impressive. I said yes and we have been together ever since.

T H E P RO P O S A L The proposal could not have been better! It was mid- February and we went on a Caribbean Cruise, Greg popped the question in front of 20 of our closest friends in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. I had absolutely no clue it was coming. He got on one knee and I immediately fell into his lap. Before I said yes I asked “is this real?!” The remainder of the cruise we were a pretty popular couple!

REAL WEDDINGS

THE DRESS All summer I planned on getting a vintage, lace wedding dress with a cut out back. I knew I did NOT want a strapless dress, and I did NOT want a “fufy” dress. After trying on 40- 50 dresses I ended up choosing an ivory, strapless, mermaid (form fitting) dress. Towards the bottom, the dress had beautiful silk layers.

FAVO R I T E MOMENTS We agree our favorite moment of the wedding was the First Look. The time we got to spend alone, before the ceremony, was so important. It assured our love for each other, and opened our hearts. It was a very serious, happy and emotional moment.

FOOD + CAKE + DRINKS Our food from Top Tier Catering was phenomenal! We had a light dinner buffet including chicken tenders, a variety of sliders, vegetable trays,

and a macaroni bar served in martini glasses. I was so thankful the wedding coordinator forced us to sit down and try all of the dishes before we could go celebrate. The cakes were fantastic! For the bridal cake we chose a 4 tier strawberry swirl flavor from The Cakery, I wanted something a little less traditional and this flavor was a hit! For the Groom’s Cake we chose a chocolate cake decorated as a poker table.

T H E F LO W E R S For the bridesmaids I wanted cream colored roses to contrast with their black dresses. They looked great! My bouquet was all red sweetheart roses (the roses bloomed into a heart shape) and we added three broaches into my bouquet. One from my mom, granny and grandma, it was very sentimental. Each table at the reception had an arrangement with a mixture of red roses and hydrangeas. All of the flowers were very classy and well put together.

B I G G E S T S P L U RG E I am most happy my parents splurged on the photographer. The photos are absolutely perfect and the memories will last a lifetime!

B E S T A DV I C E It is a lot easier said then done, but don’t sweat it! Don’t worry and stress over anything and everything. On your wedding day you are not going to notice if there is a decoration missing, or if your napkins are red instead of black, or if Grandma is wearing a blue dress instead of purple. The day is going to happen with or without some things, and whatever storm comes on your wedding day it will be a fantastic day!

THE FUTURE As newlyweds, we want to spend time traveling and seeing the world before we settle down and have children.

THE VISION Vineyard weddings are fabulous affairs. Who doesn’t love wine? While vineyard themed weddings are super popular there’s always fun, new ways to take on a classic vineyard wedding. We selectedeggplant, taupe and cream to color this elegant reception. Opting for muted tones creates a candlelit soft look. The picture of elegance with a glass of wine.

AN ELEGANT VINEYARD AFFAIR

THE DRESS(ES) This elegant vineyard affair demanded an elegant gown. We chose a trumpet shaped skirt, sweetheart neckline and light beading in an off white. (Provided by Casablanca Bridal) Pure white gowns sometimes do not just clash with brides skin tones but it can also clash with the theme. A pure white gown would have looked out of place amongst the muted color palette of the wedding. The reception dress was a gorgeous short tan toned with an ombre. Reception dresses are great options to get a little bit of everything. (Reception dress by BHLDN).

THE CENTERPIECES Centerpieces are definitely a “star of the show” when it comes to reception decorations. We opted for a gorgeous flower centerpiece in a wine barrel (flowers by House of Flowers) We decided to incorporate wine bottles and simple name tags and a large centerpiece to create an elegant affair. Love the wine bottles? It’s super simple. Take an empty wine bottle, and a tall candle. Melt the end of the tall candle and shove it into the wine bottle opening.

AN ELEGANT VINEYARD AFFAIR

T H E FAVO R S When you create cohesive themes for your reception oftentimes favors, decorations, and trinkets almost make themselves. For This favor we chose two things. First, we selected a fun wine corkscrew (provided by Wedding Star) to be placed at each table setting. This both incorporates the Vineyard theme and provides something useful for guests to take home. Who doesn’t love corkscrews? The second wedding favor is a journal for guests to note what wines they love from the wine bar! (provided by Wedding Star). Favors don’t have to sit in closets for forever! They can be fun, useful items that bring back memories from your special day for all your guests.

THE WINE BAR This wine bar is extra fab! We took barrels from Deep South Barrels and aged our favorite wines to increase the quality of the taste. You can follow instructions on their site how to age wine. We love this option as opposed to bottle service because guests can actually taste wine, decide what they like and it’s a great DIY for the bridal party to do about a month before the wedding! Added bonus? Creates gorgeous photos with barrels in the backdrop. Who doesn't love barrels?

THE VISION Outside weddings are huge in West Texas, and while there’s tons of ways you can decorate and create an outside wedding we wanted to create a Secret Garden. Everyone remembers the book or movie The Secret Garden. What stands out the most is creating an oasis where everything else falls away and you can focus on the moment. Our staff wanted to re-create that filling with this wedding. We chose vibrant colors (cantaloupe + grapefruit) to create a fun atmosphere. This reception was designed to be fun, exciting and carefree!

THE DRESS We kept the Secret Garden theme in mind when selecting dresses for this wedding. We opted for something simple and elegant to create a fun atmosphere for the wedding. For the ceremony dress we chose a gorgeous Alfred Angelo strapless gown. The reception dress from BHLDN was chosen for the same reason. Simple, elegant with small detail flowers that resembled the Secret Garden theme we’re trying to create.

THE GUESTBOOK

kudos to...

This cute box from Weddingstar was the perfect guestbook for this Secret Garden affair. We left out slips of paper for guests to write their well wishes and advice along with their names on slips of paper, then guest roll up their slips of paper and place them in the birdcage. This guestbook container is just adorable and fits perfectly with our garden theme.

T H E FAVO R S Sometimes favors can also double as decorations! We opted for small picnic baskets with extra sweet treats inside! (Baskets provided by Weddingstar) Placing this at each table not only offers an extra decoration pizzazz for the lovely tables. Who doesn’t love miniature version of things like picnic baskets?

The centerpiece was simply pic-tastic! Gorgeous flowers in a larger picnic basket! We chose to use wood planks as chargers since it was outdoors and bright orange napkins to draw in the wedding colors to the table. Our fun table number was included into the centerpiece. It’s a great example of a simple centerpiece being perfect, especially for an outdoor wedding!!

C A N I H AV E S O M E S’MORE? Who doesn’t love S’mores? Everyone remembers fun campfire memories burning marshmallows. Here’s a super sweet campfire bar for your special day. Set up a dessert bar of s’more build-ables. We added some extra cuteness but including small picnic baskets to hold the chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers! It’s a fun activity for your guests to do at your reception.
