Toronto Cycling Loops Please note: these descriptions focus on the main loops. There are many shortcuts and alternatives marked on the map. Some loops require short distances on major roads. Take care. Ride in a straight line, and unless you are familiar with vehicular left hand turns, cross busy streets on foot. 1. South Etobicoke Loop - 26 km This loop takes you along the vibrant retail strip along Lakeshore Rd., through the core of Etobicoke's industrial district, through leafy neighbourhoods to the edge of the Humber Valley before returning to the lake. Along Park Lawn Rd. and through the industrial area, there are big trucks, so take precautions, such as planning your ride for a Sunday. 2. Etobicoke East Mall Loop- 24 km. Although this loop can see a lot of traffic, especially at rush hour and on busy shopping days, it offers wide curb lanes and long stretches without many lights. Beware of large trucks in the industrial lands at the south end of the loop. 3. Humber - Westway Loop - 22 km. This loop features a section of trail along the Humber River and explores prosperous neighbourhoods south of the 401 4. Humber - North Etobicoke Loop - 24 km. Explore northern stretches of the Humber River along the off-road trail and loop through quiet suburban neighbourhoods. 5. York University - Western Downsview Loop - 24 km. This loop takes you through West Downsview, paralleling Hwy 400 on the west is a long stretch with few stops. Careful crossing the bridge at Sheppard. It is recommended to travel counter clockwise on this loop. Note that the route loops over the Sheppard bridge and then circles under it to continue south. The loop follows neighbourhood streets, and off-road trails north to York University, and immediately west of the university is Black Creek Pioneer Village. Careful on Sentinel; traffic can be heavy at rush hour. 6. North York Centre Loop - 28 km. You can begin and end this loop at Mel Lastman Square, riding along minor arterial streets for long stretches without too many stops. 7. Fairview Mall Loop - 31 km. So you think cycling in suburban Toronto means battling aggressive traffic? This route provides extensive riding on minor arterial streets and through quiet neighbourhoods. A few hills are thrown in for good measure.

16. North Toronto East Loop -32 km. This loop explores North Toronto's diversity, from the Don Valley and Edwards Gardens to the sequestered opulence of the Bridle Path to the red brick neighbourhoods of North Toronto. Careful on Bayview Avenue. There are bike lanes close to the bridge at Lawrence, but they do not extend to Post Rd. 17. North Toronto West - Wilson Heights Loop - 25 km. This loop manages to straddle the 401, a considerable barrier. Careful on Avenue Rd., Wilson Ave. and Dufferin, especially at rush hour. Caledonia offers a clear run without stops. Remember, once you hit Roselawn, bagels and good coffee are nearby along Eglinton West. 18. Forest Hill - Caledonia Loop - 18 km. This loop has its climbs, but is well worthwhile. Travel along Davenport Rd., base of old Lake Iroquois, and a route for centuries, first by native people, then by stage coach, and now by intrepid commuters. Bike lanes now make it even more pleasant for cyclists. Caledonia features industry and Italian bakeries and sandwich shops. Forest Hill features quiet leafy streets and the established dwellings of the well-heeled. On Castlefield/ Roselawn you pass just north of Eglinton West which features Italian and Portuguese shops around Caledonia, then Caribbean shops further east and Jewish shops around Bathurst. 19. Black Creek - Humber Loop - 20 km. This loop takes you along part of the Humber trail, past the old village of Weston and through the neighbourhoods around Black Creek. Some hills. 20. High Park North Loop - 19 km. This loop stretches from the bike path along Lake Ontario, north along Ellis Rd., onto Runnymede, over to Baby Point, to the edge of Eglinton Flats, and then returns south through the old Ontario Stock Yards site (now sprouting big box retail) and the surrounding industrial area, back to Runnymede and beautiful High Park. 21. High Park - Exhibition Loop - 19 km. This loop is hugely varied, featuring High Park, the Martin Goodman Trail, and the Canadian National Exhibition Grounds. Dovercourt is a pleasant treed street that takes you to Wallace Ave. Cross the railway tracks over a recently renovated, old-time pedestrian bridge and then cycle through the High Park neighbourhood back to High Park. 22. Downtown West Loop - 19 km. From the SkyDome to the University of Toronto, through the Annex to Davenport, then south to the Ex, and along the lakeshore , this loop offers a varied sampling of the cultural, business, and environmental aspects of downtown Toronto.

8. Agincourt Loop - 35 km. This long loop explores industrial and residential Scarborough and features roads with few stops. Careful on Birchmount crossing the 401. Although there is no interchange here, traffic can be heavy.

23. Downtown East - Rosedale Loop - 20 km. From the SkyDome to the University of Toronto, through the Annex, up the hill into Forest Hill, over to Moore Park and south through Rosedale and along the bike lanes on Sherbourne to the lake and along the lakeshore on Queen's Quay's bike lanes, this loop offers a different sampling of downtown Toronto's varied from the loop above. It also features more hills.

9. Metro Toronto Zoo Loop - 36 km. This loop features some of the most spectacular cycling in the city. It passes through the Rouge Valley on the twisting, up-and-down Twyn Rivers Dr., passes near the Scarborough Campus of the University of Toronto and the Metro Toronto Zoo. This loop offers countryside, treed neighbourhoods and variety.

24. Midtown Loop - 32 km. This loop features the Don River Trail, and the neighbourhoods of Cabbagetown, Rosedale, Moore Park, Forest Hill and Leaside. There are hills in and out of the valley and a general climb south to north. Take the pedestrian bridge over the railway at MacLennan.

10. Rouge Park - Guildwood Loop - 34 km. This excellent loop features the beauty and exhilaration of Twyn Rivers Rd., views of the lake, the Guildwood neighbourhood of eastern Scarborough, and the beauty of Old Kingston Rd. 11. Morningside - Guildwood Loop - 21 km. This loop features the mix of scenery and quiet neighbourhoods on residential and minor arterial streets. It passes the Scarborough Campus of the University of Toronto, Colonel Danforth Park, and Guildwood Village. 12. Scarborough Civic Centre - Bluffers Park Loop - 54 km. This long loop stretches east to the Scarborough campus of the University of Toronto, and south to the spectacular cliffs of Bluffers Park. Hills are available! 13. East East York Loop - 25 km. This loop explores a variety of neighbourhoods straddling Victoria Park Ave. Careful of trucks on Bermondsey and in the Ashtonbee area.

25. Riverdale Loop - 20 km. This loop features the Lower Don Trail, Martin Goodman Trail around Cherry Street, Clark Beach and Ashbridge's Bay, the East Indian community on Gerrard, and parts of Riverdale. Strathcona features Toronto's first contra-flow bike lanes on one-way streets. Start and end at Riverdale Park with one of the great views of the city's downtown. 26. Don - East York - Taylor Creek Loop - 16 km. This loop features great riding along the Don Trail, and Taylor Creek Trail and explores East York's quiet residential streets. 27. Beaches Loop - 12 km. This loop explores the vibrant Beaches neighbourhood. There are up hills from south to north. Take a break on the beach, hang out at a coffee shop on Queen. Take a short side trip to the Harris filtration plant, one of Toronto's architectural treasures, with a great sense of the lake.

14. Parkwoods Village Loop - 15 km. This loop explores neighbourhoods east of one of the branches of the Don River. It features quiet roads for the most part, but there are short stretches on busier roads. Take care crossing Ellesmere. There are no lights or crosswalk at Dewey/Crocus, but there are natural gaps in traffic.

28. Islands Loop - 7 km. (one way) Car-free cycling, peace and quiet, the island neighbourhoods, the beaches and the winding paths make this loop a favourite among Toronto cyclists. And it comes complete with a ferry ride, for which there is a fare. During the summer, bikes cannot be taken to Centre Island at certain hours, but many cyclists head for Ward's Island or Hanlon's Point and cycle across to the other to return.

15. Bayview Village - Donway Loop - 19 km. This loop explores various neighbourhoods, from the highrises around the Donway to comfortable suburban streets and on to tonier neighbourhoods around Bayview Village. There are off-road stretches that allow you to avoid cycling on major roads.

29. Leslie St. Spit - 11 km. (there and back) Open only on weekends, this peninsula made of rubble has become a great nature reserve and the nesting place for thousands of birds. The destination on this out and back trip is the lighthouse. Great views of the lake, the harbour, and downtown. Pack water and food.
