A QUICK GUIDE TO CASARES

ROMANBATHS

Located in the Casares Costa, the Casares Roman Baths, also known as the Baños de la Hedionda, have been used since Roman times. The baths contain mineral-rich, sulfuric water, which has long been associated with therapeutic benefits. According to local history, Julius Caesar is said to have bathed here to treat a skin condition, adding to the site's historical significance.

Getting There

The Casares Roman Baths are situated in a tranquil, natural setting near the Río Manilva, just a short drive inland from the coast. If you continue to follow the road past lidl up towards Manilva Poligono, it will be on your right hand side. This hidden gem offers a peaceful escape from the busier beach resorts.

Best Time to Visit

Peak visiting months are June through August when tourism in the Costa del Sol is at its highest. Due to the increased demand, reservations are required during this period to ensure controlled access and maintain the site’s preservation. For a more relaxed experience, visiting during the off-season is recommended.

What to Expect

The baths contain cool, milky-blue sulfuric water that is naturally heated underground before flowing into the bathing area. The distinct sulfur smell may take some getting used to, but it reflects the water’s rich mineral content. Visitors can enjoy a soothing soak while admiring the ancient stone structures that surround the pool.

Tips for Your Visit

Reservations: Required from June to August; book in advance.

Entry: Generally free, though guided tours may be available

Facilities: The site is rustic and does not have modern changing rooms or other amenities

What to Bring: A towel, water shoes (for slippery surfaces), and a camera to capture the beautiful surroundings

Pestiños – A Traditional Andalusian Easter Treat

Pestiños are one of Andalusia’s most traditional Semana Santa (Easter) and Christmas sweets, dating back to the 16th century. With roots in Islamic cuisine, they bear a strong resemblance to Moroccan chebakia, highlighting the shared culinary heritage of Spain and North Africa.

These delicious treats are made from a simple dough of flour, yeast, sesame seeds, orange juice, and cinnamon, which is deep-fried to golden perfection Once crispy, they are coated in honey or sugar, depending on preference Their rich flavour and crisp texture make them a beloved festive indulgence in southern Spain

If you walk into a local pastry anywhere in Andalusia during Easter or Christmas, be sure to try pick up and try some pestiños a bite of history wrapped in sweetness! ✨

Instructions on how to make them

1 Make the dough: In a bowl, mix flour, cinnamon, and baking powder. Add the infused oil, white wine, and orange juice, then knead until smooth. Let it rest for 30 minutes.

3.

Infuse the oil: Heat the olive oil in a pan and add the orange zest, sesame seeds, and anise seeds. Let them infuse for a minute, then remove from heat and cool.

2. Shape the pestiños: Roll out the dough to about 3mm thick and cut into squares. Fold opposite corners together and press to seal

Fry them: Heat olive oil in a pan and fry the pestiños in batches until golden brown Drain on paper towels

5

4 Coat in honey: Warm the honey with a little water, then dip the pestiños in the mixture or drizzle it over them. Alternatively, dust them with sugar.

Carlos Pacheco www.carlospacheco.es

San Roque Pays Tribute to Carlos Pacheco with a Permanent Exhibition at the CAC.

San Roque has taken a significant step in promoting its cultural heritage with the inauguration of the Permanent Exhibition of Carlos Pacheco at the Contemporary Art Center (CAC). This space is dedicated to the career of one of the greatest comic book artists, whose influence has transcended borders and generations.

Under the motto "When Dreams Come True," this exhibition allows visitors to immerse themselves in the creative universe of Carlos Pacheco, from his earliest childhood drawings to his rise as one of the most influential artists at Marvel and DC. It is a unique opportunity to explore his artistic evolution and his personal masterpiece, Arrowsmith

One of the most special aspects of the exhibition is the recreation of his studio, where many of his iconic illustrations were born. Thanks to the generosity of his family, visitors can admire original pieces and personal items that reveal Pacheco's creative process, offering a deeper understanding of the art of graphic storytelling.

This project, driven by the San Roque City Council and largely led by Álex Pacheco Ruiz, not only honors the artist's legacy but also establishes San Roque as a must-visit destination for comic book lovers and culture enthusiasts. There are very few spaces in the world dedicated to a single comic book artist, and this one will undoubtedly have a major cultural impact, both for those who knew Carlos and for new generations who will now discover his work.

San Roque is not just about history, nature, and tradition-it is also a place where culture continues to grow and evolve

We invite all residents and visitors to explore this exhibition, immerse themselves in the world of the ninth art, and rediscover San Roque as a key cultural destination

SanRoque

Manilva’s Call for Greater Security: A Step in the Right Direction?

In a move that underscores the growing concerns of local businesses, the Mayor of Manilva, José Manuel Fernández, has taken a decisive stance alongside the town’s merchants in a push for improved security. At a time when community well-being and economic stability go hand in hand, this initiative signals a strong and much-needed commitment to safeguarding both commerce and residents alike.

What stands out most in this initiative is the mayor’s willingness to lead from the front. Not only will he contribute the signatures of all municipal councillors, but he has also pledged to personally accompany local representatives to the Subdelegation of the Government in Málaga. This direct approach is a refreshing change from the often slow-moving bureaucratic processes that can leave such concerns unanswered

Security in Manilva has been a topic of discussion for some time. Reports from local police, records of previous appeals to higher authorities, and official minutes from security meetings all indicate that this is not a sudden concern but a longstanding issue The difference now is the level of unified action between the local government and business community. If successful, this campaign could set a precedent for other municipalities facing similar challenges along the Costa del Sol.

Secure Your Belongings

Use a crossbody bag with a zip and keep it in front of you. Keep wallets and phones in front pockets rather than back pockets. Never leave belongings unattended, in your car, or on restaurant tables or sun loungers. Many tourists are targeted by their rental cars, so be sure to park in open lit areas.

Avoid displaying valuables such as expensive jewellery, watches, or large amounts of cash

Avoid Scams

Beware of overly friendly strangers asking for donations, selling items, or performing tricks, or offering your something for free.

For international residents and visitors, security is often a deciding factor when choosing where to live, invest, or spend leisure time. Manilva’s reputation as a picturesque and peaceful town must be maintained, and ensuring adequate security measures is key to sustaining its appeal.

Ruiz El continente me pareció impecable
