Amenities

Formed in 1772, Shenandoah County is strategically located in the northwestern portion of Virginia, between the Allegheny and Massanutten Mountains, in the heart of the picturesque Shenandoah Valley. Shenandoah is an Indian name meaning “beautiful daughter of the stars.” Located within 150 miles of Washington, D.C., Baltimore (MD), Richmond, Roanoke and Harrisburg (PA), nearby commercial centers include Winchester (30 miles) and Harrisonburg (35 miles). The 507 square mile county includes six incorporated towns: Edinburg, Mt. Jackson, New Market, Strasburg, Toms Brook, Woodstock, and one unincorporated town, Maurertown. Elevations range from 3,500 feet above sea level in the mountains to 1,200 feet on the valley floor. The gently rolling valley terrain is well drained by the Shenandoah River. A balance of beautiful landscape, industry and quality of life make Shenandoah County an exceptional place to live, work and play.

Tourism

Tourism is one of the top three industries in Shenandoah County. The county boasts some of the State’s most popular tourist attractions, including the New Market Battlefield Park and Hall of Valor Museum, Shenandoah Caverns and American Celebration on Parade, wineries, golf resorts and a ski resort. Tourism generates well over $100 million annually. Our small towns are like a string of pearls along the Old Valley Pike, Route 11. These friendly towns, each one with its own historic flavor, are great places to stop for a look at small town life, beautiful architecture, unique shops and eateries. Education & Regional Resources Shenandoah County has three public school campuses, each with an elementary, middle and high school. James Madison University, Shenandoah University, Eastern Mennonite University, and Bridgewater College are four-year institutions of higher learning within commuting distance. Lord Fairfax Community College, a two-year college located in nearby Middletown, offers a variety of associate degrees, and tailored workforce training. The Community College offers dual enrollment credit through the local high schools, and also brings class offerings into the community.

Recreation Facilities include 22 tennis courts, 15 ball fields/soccer fields, five swimming pools, two golf courses, a skating rink, 2 bowling alleys, a tri-plex movie theater, and amateur theater. There are six public parks within the county. Snow skiing is available at Bryce Mountain Resort. Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive, and George Washington National Forest are popular areas for hiking and outdoor sports. Extensive forest and open land attracts thousands of deer, bear, and small game hunters. Fishermen are tantalized by the Shenandoah River and numerous trout streams. The County Parks and Recreation Department has recreational programs for all ages throughout the year.

Transportation

The highway system serving Shenandoah County directly includes Interstate 81 and 66, U.S. highway route 11, and state primary routes 42, 263, and 55. Eleven trucking companies have routes through the County with terminals at Winchester and Harrisonburg. Norfolk Southern and CSX Corporation provide rail service to the County. Virginia’s Inland Port, 15 miles northeast of Strasburg (I-66), provides custom clearance and shuttle of ocean cargo (trailer and container) via Norfolk Southern Railroad to and from the Port of Hampton Roads. Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is the principal cargo terminal serving Shenandoah County. IAD handles over 651 million pounds of cargo and over 129 million pounds of mail each year. It is one of the fastest growing airports, domestically & internationally, in the USA.

Industry/Economy Shenandoah County Among ‘Best Rural’ Places to Live Progressive Farmer Magazine recently selected Shenandoah County as one of eight counties in Virginia that made the magazine’s Southeast list of “Best Places to Live in Rural America” -2008

Manufacturing, agriculture and tourism are the county’s principal industries. The Virginia Inland Port in Front Royal, is now the closest port of entry to the industrial markets of the Ohio Valley region, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia. Shenandoah County ranks fourth among Virginia counties in agriculture production. Shenandoah Business and Industrial Center is located at the northern end of the county and proposes a mix of whitecollar industries and business services. Additionally there is a 113 acre Industrial park near I-81 with 15 acres already divided into a business park setting. Shenandoah County fosters a business climate in which the county can prosper and grow.
