Clyde Wonders
W
Back in the Pulpit
hen you hear the name Clyde Wonders you can associate it with one of the longest serving pastors in Hillsdale County. You may also know him from “The Voice of Wheatland”, a weekly radio program, which is the longest airing church service on WCSR which began in 1982. Perhaps you knew him from his 20 years of driving school bus, his tenure on the Litchfield School Board, or his ministry as Chaplain of the Hillsdale County Jail. Reverend Wonders, a native of Homer Michigan and resident of Hillsdale County since 1954, has presided over thousands of weddings, funerals and church services. The ministry of Clyde Wonders began shortly after his graduation in 1953 from Grand Rapids Bible College now formally known as Cornerstone. During Bible College, Clyde met and married his bride of 62 years, Irene, who has served as a tremendous support during their lifelong ministry. One summer day in May of 1980, Clyde Wonders was called to serve as the Senior Pastor of Wheatland Congressional Church. Prior to what has become his final ministry calling, Pastor Wonders served at South Litchfield Church, Omega Church and Dayberg Baptist Church’s since 1963 in various roles. He recalls conducting a Rural Bible Mission service at Wheatland Church when he later said to his wife that if he would ever have the chance he would love to pastor the church. His hearts desire came true and within a few months of taking over, he was leading a major building project due to the church fire that destroyed everything except the bell tower. So, Clyde Wonders has come to know trials, struggles and difficulties during his long serving ministry. But when the man who is always walking the hallways of hospitals throughout the tri-state area and constantly praying for the sick
finds himself in need of medical attention, where does he go? Clyde Wonders credits that staff at Hillsdale Community Health Center for saving his physical life. Clyde considers himself to be a “pretty healthy fella” with his first major medical attention given in 2006 for open heart surgery. He recovered quite well from his surgery and continued at the same speed and tenacity that he had always enjoyed throughout his ministry. However, after a routine check-up at his local physician office, Clyde was faced with the reality he needed to have cancer surgery. So without hesitation, Clyde scheduled his surgery at Hillsdale Community Health Center and after a successful surgery, he suffered some significant health setbacks landing him to stay in the hospital for nearly 10 weeks. After his stay in the Intensive Care Unit, Clyde was transferred to the Skilled Nursing Facility at the hospital where he credits “great staff ” and “excellent care” to his recovery. Today, thanks to the excellent medical care that he received from the Hillsdale Community Health Center, Clyde is back in the pulpit, conducting funerals and able to honor all of his wedding commitments. Clyde credits the outstanding quality of care that he received at HCHC as a primary reason he is back in the pulpit. Clyde stated; “the nurses were so nice and good to me” and further goes on to say; “everyone thinks they have to go to a big hospital to get good care, not so and I tell people they are wrong because I got great care at Hillsdale!” His new lease on life provides him the opportunity to fully enjoy time with his 3 children, 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Winter Driving tips
publisher
By Rob Shewman
For road travelers, winter can be the most dangerous time of year. The following winter driving tips will help you stay safe and a little less anxious on your next trip.
Marlanea McGraw Owner/Publisher
Have your car examined before you leave. This is one of the most crucial winter driving tips. The last thing you want to worry about is your car falling apart, leaving you stranded far away from home. Take it to your local auto shop for a quick once over, and make sure your tires are winter ready and properly inflated. be prepared for a cHange in course. Before you depart, become confident in knowing your route. It’s very important that you’re ready for anything on the road that could slightly change your plans, including construction, road closings and traffic hurdles. stay Hydrated for tHe journey. It probably seems like dehydration isn’t very likely, but a recent Mayo Clinic study shows that a mere one- to two-percent loss of body weight can quickly lead to fatigue and decreased alertness, which could be deadly in icy winter driving. Also, your body requires more fuel in the cold — so rely on high-energy food including sandwiches, a thermos filled with soup and fruit. pack a winter safety kit for tHe car. Don’t leave without the essentials for a safe road trip — a cell phone (don’t forget the car charger); ice scraper; tow rope and jumper cables; sand or cat litter to aid with traction; blankets; flashlights, matches and emergency candles; first aid kit; portable radio; and a good book, in case you do get stuck. make frequent rest stops. Winter driving is much more fatiguing than in the summer, so you’ll want to make time to stop and stretch your legs. Just a few minutes off the road will make all the difference in improving your alertness when you’re back behind the wheel. 517-439-1323 146 Lewis st Hillsdale

Staying healthy over the holidayS
The holiday season can be a very stressful time for many. Putting others first on occasion can be beneficial, but when it is constant, the toll on your body can be huge. There are some easy ways to stay healthy during the holiday season. StreSS. Everyone knows the holidays can be stressful. Your body deals with stress by tensing up, headaches, neck pain, low back pain, jaw pain, stomach aches, etc. You need to fix the cause of the problem, and get adjusted to treat and prevent injuries from happening repeatedly. travel. There are so many reasons why it can mess you up. Being in a car for long periods of time, tensing up if driving in bad weather or heavy traffic, carrying heavy bags…it all takes a toll. Chiropractic is great for helping treat injuries brought on by wear and tear from traveling, before and after your next trip, get adjusted. Your body (and in-laws) will thank you! **Travel tip: Pack a tennis ball in your carry on and use it as a self-massager whenever you need a break. Put it between your back and a wall, and lean into it, using as much pressure as you can. Roll side to side and up and down to give yourself some quick relief! Cold & Flu. Tis the season for the sniffles and chills. Getting adjusted regularly can balance the nervous system, boost the immune system, promote lymph drainage and strengthen the lungs and other organs. Bad Weather. Even though we are not snow covered yet, we will be before you know it. Snow and ice can cause so many injuries. Falls on ice, car accidents, shoveling, skiing & snowboarding tumbles and more are pretty common in these parts. It is important to get checked out right away if any of these things happen. Often times, you may not feel the pain until hours or days after the injury happens. During that time you may have been causing more damage.

Winter Fashion:
By this point, your boots are crunching on the leaves and you’ve indulged yourself in all things wonderful about fall. You have to ask yourself as you throw on a chunky knit sweater and add a scarf around your neck, fall fashion is everything .... what is better than this? The answer is Holiday Fashion. It’s true, I am easily wooed by cozy outfits, winter whites, and don’t even get me started on my love for shiny things and sequins. Holiday fashion is fun and inspiring, you want to feel beautiful when your spending time with the ones you love. What should you have in your wardrobe for this Holiday season? Check out some of my favorite items for the upcoming holiday season...
13
Something Cozy:
There is something to be said about a good cozy oversized sweater, but there’s even more to be said about a sweater that can be worn to events and still make you look pulled together.
TIP: Pair sweaters with a fitted bottom and bootie. You can complete the look by adding a statement necklace.
Winter Whites:
The rule of don’t wear white after Labor Day is officially off the table. You can wear white, and what is better than wearing white for a holiday party? It goes with everything and white will add a perfect amount of eleganance for every event.
TIP: Pairing a vest over a white sweater can easily dress your outfit down for an anytime wear. 14
Casual Cashmere:
Delicioulsy cozy cashmere is one of my favorite go-to fabrics for winter. Cashmere is the perfect materie; it’s soft, cozy and so warm. Cashmere can make you feel glamorous in any setting, be it a casual family event or the company Christmas party.
TIP: Adding a classy cashmere shawl can add just-the-right something to a simple jeans and t-shirt outfit to make you feel fabulous.
Let’s Top it All Off in Style:
Staying warm with a great hat can add an extra dose of style to an overall look. Why not choose a cap that really pulls a look together? Whether you are walking to work or spending the weekend outdoors, make it more than just a way to stay warm. By choosing bright colors, textured fabrics or fur trim, your winter headwear can become a key fashion accessory.
TIP: Many of these items can be found in local boutiques including these fabulous hats which can be found at Boutique de Joié. You can also find items at 8 North, Maggie Anne Shoppe and Maribeths. 15

T
he winter holidays are here which means it’s time to spread some cheer. Instead of running to the mall to buy a ready-made gift for friends and family, why not create a personalized beauty gift that can also minimize your spending. Try two of my favorite homemade organic beauty recipes that will be sure to create a warm glow in the heart of the receiver as well as provide a fun and festive holiday project to get you into the spirit of the season.
1/3 of the sugar mixture into a second bowl. Gradually add drops of natural food coloring into the mixture while stirring until the desired color intensity is achieved. Create the first layer by pouring a half-inch layer of the white mixture into a mason jar. Slide the jar back and forth on the counter until the layer looks flat. Place the jar into the freezer for 10 minutes until the layer is firm. Then, pour a half-inch layer of the colored mixture onto the white layer. Repeat the process interchanging colors until desired look is achieved.
HOMEMADE ORGANIC CANDY CANE SUGAR SCRUB
Once the layers are set, you can remove the jar from the freezer and seal it with a lid. Add your own personal decorative labels to finish off the holiday gift.
Use this scrub as an exfoliator for hands and body in the shower 1-2 times weekly.
HOMEMADE ORGANIC COCONUT OIL AND COCOA BUTTER LOTION BARS AND LIP BALM
3 pint mason jars or 6 half-pint mason jars
5 cups granulated organic cane sugar 2 cups organic cold-pressed virgin coconut oil 1/3 cup organic olive oil 20-30 drops pure peppermint essential oil Natural food coloring Mason jars with lids (3 pint jars or 6 half pint jars) Heat coconut oil in a double boiler until completely melted, making sure to stir frequently. Remove boiler from heat and pour oil into a large bowl. Stir olive oil and peppermint essential oil into the coconut oil. Gradually add sugar into oil mixture stirring constantly until no dry sugar remains. Make the scrub festive by integrating seasonal colors into the mixture. Use red or green paired with white for Christmas or blue and white for Hanukkah. To create the layered effect with two colors, separate
8 small bars and 6 lip balms Apply this lip balm using your finger. When using the lotion bar, lightly rub directly against the skin. The heat of your skin will cause the bar to melt and leave a thin layer of lotion; rub lotion into skin with hands and it will absorb in about 5 minutes. It’s best to keep the bars refrigerated to prevent them from melting in warm weather. 1/3 cup organic cold-pressed virgin coconut oil 1/3 cup organic cocoa butter
2/3 cup organic white beeswax (grated) or organic white beeswax pastilles 4 4-ounce mason jars with lids 6 clear lip balm jars Optional: 10-20 drops natural essential oils for fragrance Combine all ingredients except essential oils in a double broiler and heat until completely melted while stirring frequently. It should take about 7-10 minutes. Remove double boiler from heat. Quickly transfer oil into a 4-Cup Pyrex liquid measuring cup. First, pour oil mixture into lip balm containers. Set aside to cool. If you’d like to add a fragrance to the lotion bars, add essential oils into remaining oil mixture. Stir thoroughly. Quickly pour mixture into small metal or silicon muffin molds. Set aside to cool for about 4 hours. To speed up the process, let the molds cool for 45 minutes and then place them in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour. Remove from refrigerator, flip the pan over and gently tap edge against the counter. They should pop out easily. If having trouble removing, place in freezer for 10 minutes and repeat. To dress up the lip balm, add a decorative sticker to the lid. For the lotion bars, place 2 bars in each small mason jar and attach a festive tie-on to the lid. take you gift to the next level with unique containers A simple batch of handmade lip balm is the perfect way to put a collection of tiny vintage and upcycled tins and jars to good use. A welcome companion at any time of the year, you may even find yourself dipping into it to soothe dry cuticles or a dry patch of skin on the backs of your hands. A personal favorite is peppermint flavored balm in a recycled Altoid container... brilliant!

New orthopedic surgeon settles in Hillsdale Parthiv Patel, D.O.
By Nancy Hastings Simply Hers Magazine
A doctor who likes the small town atmosphere Hillsdale offers is glad to be a part of the community. Hillsdale Community Health Center and Barry J. Collins, D.O. recently welcomed Orthopedic Surgeon Parthiv Patel, D.O. He is accepting new patients at The Bone & Joint Center of Hillsdale County, 61 W Carleton Road, Hillsdale. Patel specializes in adult and pediatric orthopedic care, joint replacement, sports medicine, reconstructive surgery, arthroscopic surgery, carpal tunnel surgery and fracture and trauma care. “I always knew I wanted to be in this field since I was in high school,” Patel said. “I was always interested in science and projects.” His interest was sparked after working with his uncle, a pathologist, as a young child. He grew up in India and his parents moved to the Chicago area in 1994 as he began high school Then, in high school, his interest grew and he pursued his chosen career. In 2008, he obtained his post graduate education and training in orthopedic surgery. His internship and residency was at Midwestern University in Illinois. He became accredited at the St. Francis Orthopedic Institute in Columbus, Georgia. Patel is a licensed physician and surgeon in Michigan, Illinois and Georgia and has taken numerous continuing education courses from advanced trauma life support to sports medicine and advanced fracture courses. As an orthopedic surgeon, Patel concentrates on the body’s bones, joints and ligaments and likes the idea of being able to “fix” patients rather than merely treating them for ongoing medical conditions. “I like to think of it as treating the patient as a whole after finding out what their activity level is and what their needs are,” Patel said. “I believe in treating the patient as an individual.”
20
“I see different levels as well,” he said, noting he is really interested in sports medicine and shoulder injuries. It’s usually the younger population of patients who are involved at these levels, he said, and he’s had an extensive background in treating athletes during his residency in Chicago. Taking the industry sponsored and academy courses sparked his enthusiasm for the sports medicine movement and the desire to obtain advanced training in the field. As part of the research and publications required, he has written on numerous topics from rotator cuff tears to posterior shoulder instability in young athletes. During his fellowship, he wrote a 21 page chapter called “Tuberosity Fractures,” which will be published in 2015. Apart from sports medicine, Patel also specializes in shoulder replacements for the elderly, as well as complex fractures in the upper extremities. Professional society memberships include: American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, American Osteopathic Association, American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Association of North America. Honors and scholarships include the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine Student Scholarship (2008), Anatomy Teaching Assistantship (2006), the International Student Scholarship-USA at University of Sheffield, UK (2002) and the Elmer Hadley Award for presentation of creative independent research project at the University of Illinois at Chicago (2002). Patel is married to his wife, Disha, who is a physical therapist by training and who is studying to become a practitioner nurse. The couple’s hobbies include traveling to various destinations where they do mission trips together. Recently, they’ve traveled to Europe and Brazil. Other hobbies include skiing in the winter and water sports in the summer.
The goal is to return the patient to normal activity of daily living before the fracture or injury, he added.
“That is one of the things that attracted us to this area,” Patel said. “There are a lot of lakes here and we enjoy the water during the summer months.”
The trend with sports medicine is always high since there are many who participate in sports throughout the year and depending on what time of year, he sees different injuries.
To learn more about Dr. Patel or to schedule an appointment, he can be reached at 517-439-5411.

Sharing my experience of what happened when I chose to say
Hello to Halo™ Day 1
Our readers have been interested in the new Halo™ procedure being offered by Dr. Dejsarlais and so I decided to have the procedure done and share my experience with everyone... First I thought it important to point out the unique quality of the Halo™ procedure is that it allows the doctor to customize the treatment for each individual patient. Each patient has different needs in terms of sun damage and downtime - allowing the ability to dial in the exact treatment each patient needs is certainly an added bonus! The day of procedure: Wow a crazy storm is coming thru - the lights flickered OH MY GOSH! I hope we’re able to proceed - more importantly I hope the power doesn’t go out midway thru :) Before Procedure: A little anxious but super excited about seeing the results! Prior to my procedure the staff answered all of my questions and felt very informed regarding the process and all of my concerns were put to rest. Procedure: The procedure was done in stages. The first stage was numbing the area, the second stage began with the doctor taking measurements to customize my treatment. Then the actual laser procedure began starting with my forehead and moving down my face, neck and chest - there was very little pain and only a bit of discomfort. I was finished in about 30 minutes. After the procedure: I was moved out of the procedure room and into the recovery area where I received individual attention from a staff member who continually applied a thermal cooling spray and cool air until the heat dissipated and I began to feel more comfortable. The heat from the procedure was the most uncomfortable part of the process and I think I took it a bit harder than most, generally the cool down is 20-30 minutes and I was still cooling down for the ride home which was probably 1 hour and 30 minutes. Note: I did get a little shaky and had chills so I would recommend bringing a sweater just in case! The only discomfort for me was the heat I had virtually no pain (times and pain tolerance will vary with each patient).
Day 2
It was recommended that you sleep somewhat upright and on your back so, that not being my typical sleeping pattern, I did not sleep well. No pain at all - skin feels tight and dry and I do have some swelling but I would not be uncomfortable going out and about. Day two after procedure: I feel a little more puffy and red, the puffiness is more significant on the right side. My skin is tight and feels like sand paper. I am glad the procedure includes Avené post-procedure skin care products with instructions to help with the skin’s healing process.
Day 3
Day Three after procedure: Seems a bit more red today, I am noticing significant mends (The technical term for the dark spots that are lifting away from my skin and making it feel like sandpaper). My face is dry and itchy but the swelling is subsiding. Day four: My face is super dry and the mends are beginning to fall off. Where the mends fell off I am noticing a beautiful glow to my skin.
Day 4
Day five: I am excited to look in the mirror! My skin tone is evening out with the exception of a few mends that are flaking around the mouth area. My neck and chest have not started flaking at all. (They told me to expect this to be the last area where the mends will fall off). Day six: I can’t hold back my smile! I can see my beautiful skin showing through -my new complexion is free of age/sun spots and uneven pigmentation - I can’t wait to see the completed process. Ultimately this process will continue to improve my skin over the next three months so I’ll be sure to share a final photo with you in the spring.

Muscle up - live fit.
Keeping fit over the holiday season Keeping fit over the holidays may seem like an impossible task. All of the tempting foods that are a part of the holidays are hard to resist. Holiday shopping, party planning, getting ready for company and other errands combine to weaken resolve and send willpower out the window. But a few strategies can help you navigate the holidays with no regrets, preventing that “holiday hangover”!
By James Campbell Simply Hers Magazine
STEP 1 Set the achievable goal of simply maintaining your current weight, and consider yourself a success if you make it to January without any extra pounds. Losing weight is notoriously hard during the holiday season. Holiday weight gain, while averaging only 1 pound overall, is as much as 5 pounds for those already overweight or obese. But don’t think you’re off the hook if you only gain a pound. That extra pound usually does not go away, and may account for more than half of that creeping annual weight gain. STEP 2 Choose wisely during those holiday meals. Have a high-protein snack ahead of time; for example, carry a small bag of almonds in your car or purse, which will help you feel full. You will eat less at the dinner or buffet table.
24
STEP 3 Save the best for last. Keeping fit doesn’t mean you have to go without holiday goodies, just save them for last. Eat the salads, fruits and vegetables first, with low-fat dressings and dips; you will be less likely to binge later on the sweets that usually accompanies holiday meals.
STEP 4 Cut back on what you eat at the holiday meal itself to save calories. If you’re going to have pumpkin pie after dinner, skip the mashed potatoes and gravy (personally I’d eat EXTRA potatoes and skip the pie, Hahaha). Keep in mind, the season is full of potlucks and parties, and skipping meals to save room for them is NOT the answer and WILL backfire on your fitness goals. You’ll likely end up so hungry by the time the potluck rolls around, you will overeat, and let’s be honest, nobody likes that feeling. STEP 5 Reward yourself for exercise. Stay motivated to exercise by giving yourself a reward for the dedication. The little things you do for yourself are often the first to go to accommodate the holiday rush. So, when you succeed in fitting your workout into your over-scheduled day, pamper yourself…a little! In all of the holiday commotion, remember to take care of yourself, too. STEP 6 Stay active. Some days, you just won’t be able to fit exercise into your holiday schedule. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Don’t drive if you can walk. Every little bit adds up to keep fit and keep the holiday pounds at bay. STEP 7 Exercise early in the day, when you are more likely to be motivated. If you’ve already burned some calories, you will feel less guilty when you plop down on the couch with a sugar cookie after a long day of holiday hustle and bustle.

Preventing Anemia
In my last column I discussed anemia and reasons babies may develop anemia. Here is information regarding prevention of anemia. By Dr. Jon Herbener Simply Hers Magazine
Iron deficiency anemia can be prevented by making sure your baby gets an adequate supply of iron in his/her diet. Here are some simple steps you can take: • Wait on cow’s milk. Don’t give your baby cow’s milk until he/she is at least one year old. Until then give your baby breast milk or formula.
Dr. Jon Herbener Board Certified Pediatrician Fellow of American Academy of Pediatrician Practicing in Hillsdale for 37 years Chief of Pediatricians at Hillsdale Community Health Center
If you have any topic ideas that you would like Dr. Herbener to discuss please email them to us at
30 28
marlanea@simplyhers.net
• Introduce iron at the right times. If your breast feeding give your baby iron fortified cereal when you start to introduce solid foods. If you are breast feeding exclusively beyond the age of 4 months, talk to your child’s Pediatrician about giving your baby an iron supplement. New information continues to strengthen the idea that while it does not appear that there is a great deal of iron in human breast milk the iron that is present is very absorbable and is of great benefit to your infant.
• Use iron-fortified formula. If your baby drinks formula make sure it has iron added (4-12 milligrams of iron per liter). Most standard formulas in the U.S. contain iron. • Offer a balanced diet. As your son or daughter gets older you can include iron rich food in his/her diet such as pureed meat, egg yolks, green beans, peas, squash, spinach, sweet potatoes, tuna fish, ripe apricots and stewed prunes. • Enhance iron absorption. Offer your baby foods rich in Vitamin C which helps the body to absorb iron. Examples of Vitamin C – rich foods include strawberries, cantaloupe, kiwi, raspberries, broccoli, tomatoes, potatoes and cauliflower.

Taking the Irritation Out of IBS Dr. Daniels prides himself in staying in-the-know on the lastest advancements in natural supplements. Probiotics have recently received a lot of media coverage and Dr. Daniel’s thought it would be prudent to share his expert advice. Firstly, it is important to understand that all porbiotics are not created equal. The same as when one is completing a home repiar, it is important to choose the right tool for the job. And, for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Dr. Daniels chooses Ultra Flora by Metagenics. It’s not uncommon to experience occasional gastrointestinal upset, like gas, bloating, or loose stools. It happens to everyone. However, when it occurs on a regular basis with severity, it is cause for great concern. If a physician runs multiple tests and can’t pinpoint the problem, the diagnosis is likely Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Since there is no specific IBS lab test, it is diagnosed by ruling out other conditions such as bacterial infection, lactose intolerance, diverticulitis, or Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)— an unrelated condition which includes Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease. Symptoms used to clinically diagnose IBS may include diarrhea or constipation (or both alternately), gas, bloating, fatigue, and a feeling of incomplete emptying after bowel movements. IBD, which causes extensive damage to the intestines, can easily be confused with IBS, which is considered simply a malfunction of the intestines rather than a disease. Stress can trigger IBS symptoms, causing excessive intestinal motility (the movement of stool through the intestines), spasms, and cramps. Stress reduction is an important component to managing this condition. Some techniques for accomplishing this include biofeedback, hypnosis, meditation, yoga, and counseling. Regular exercise can also help control stress and promote regularity. Other triggers include hormonal changes, as well as consumption of allergenic foods and caffeine. The latter can be identified by paying attention to what is ingested when an attack occurs. A multitude of clinical trials demonstrate that probiotics are helpful and effective for reducing IBS episodes, supporting one of the theories that the cause of IBS may be due to an imbalance in the intestinal flora.

Metagenics Ultra Flora probiotics was given to 26 volunteers with IBS, some of whom were also following a drug protocol. The patients filled out an “IBS Quality of Life” questionnaire and a “Symptom Frequency Index,” (which included bloating, abdominal pain/cramps, diarrhea, constipation, and a sensation of incomplete evacuation) before and after the treatment. After four weeks, patients reported a significant improvement in quality of life as well as a decrease in symptom frequency. Some volunteers experienced improvements in as little as two weeks, and others were even able to discontinue their prescription medications. Metagenics developed Ultra Flora IB, an ultra potent probiotic designed to relieve symptoms of IBS. It contains specific strain-identified probiotics that are scientifically tested. The beneficial bacteria include a Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM (North Carolina Dairy Foundation) strain and a Bifidobacterium lactis BI-07 strain. These “identity-certified” strains are acid stable, clinically proven, derived from human origin, and help balance the intestinal flora while minimizing the growth of bacteria and Candida. As with any probiotic, there can be an increase of gas and bloating for the first few days as the intestines adjust, until the flora becomes more balanced. It is also important to increase soluble fiber intake to regulate intestines. Research proves that high-fiber intake, through food and supplements, is extremely important. Soluble fiber (dissolves in water), such as apple pectin, psyllium, flax seed, oats, rice, beans, and peas, should be the more prominent fiber source. Insoluble fiber (does not dissolve in water), such as whole wheat and wheat bran, is less effective. Contact Dr. Daniels today to schedule an appoint to discuss your issues individually. Dr. Daniels is convinced that with these natural approaches, it may be possible to do more than address IBS symptoms. In conjunction with some stress management and the avoidance of triggers, the use of these supplements may help make IBS a thing of the past.

How I Obtained Postpartum Happiness By Stephanie Gordon Simply Hers Magazine
Weight gain during pregnancy is personal for each woman. We all have different goals. For me, 30 pounds was a healthy number to gain, and I did just that during my pregnancy with Eloise. I CrossFitted throughout my entire pregnancy – my last workout was two days before I gave birth. I also ate paleo, with the exception of some cheese and about five bowls of Cap’n Crunch cereal (lol). I maintained my healthy pregnancy AND got my pre-Eloise body back with exercise, diet, chiropractic, and support. Exercise I understand that some women have fragile pregnancies, but the normal, healthy, pregnant woman should never use pregnancy as an excuse to sit. Exercise during pregnancy not only helped me stay fit and helped me prepare for labor, but it was good for Eloise, too. Exercise was also a great stress reliever. I found that CrossFitting three to four times per week worked for me. I made several modifications when I was pregnant. For example, I wasn’t comfortable with running, so I rowed instead. I wasn’t comfortable with box jumps, so I did step ups instead. And that’s ok!
My beloved burger and one of the two boxes of Cap’n Crunch I purchased while pregnant.
34
Diet If you’ve kept up with my column, you already know that I live a paleo lifestyle. I refrain from grains, dairy, and sugar, and I did just that (most of the time) throughout my pregnancy. I consider myself fortunate that I didn’t have many crazy cravings. I craved Cap’n Crunch cereal two times and craved burgers with American cheese. So, when I did have a craving, I had a lettuce wrap, instead of a bun (always), with one slice of American cheese. Again, it’s about substitution! Chiropractic Care I had a comfortable pregnancy because my husband gave me weekly, sometimes daily, adjustments. I know it would have been harder to keep up with my workouts without them. I’m fortunate that I only felt uncomfortable the last few days of my pregnancy.
Support I thank my husband and my parents for their praise and encouragement. I’m glad they encouraged me to stay healthy during my pregnancy. Although I wasn’t officially a mother this past Mother’s Day, my mom gave me a thoughtful gift for taking care of myself and Eloise. Those little words and actions are what every pregnant woman needs to hear. The Aftermath After I gave birth to Eloise, I lost most of my pregnancy weight. 13 days postpartum, I was back to my prepregnancy weight. I felt great, but I felt weak. Five days after birth, I started doing daily pelvic floor exercises to strengthen my pelvic floor and managed to eat healthy. It was hard those first three weeks. I was exhausted – in a haze, really. After I got through those weeks, I felt like a new woman. I knew my baby, her tendencies, and routine. Then, 21 days after giving birth, I went back to the gym and completed my first CrossFit workout. It sucked and I was slow, but it felt amazing. Now, four and half months after giving birth, I am setting new PRs at the gym. Being a mom is my number one priority, but taking care of myself, so I can be the best mom I can be, is important, too. Thank you, Matt for your support and love. I wouldn’t be here, happy and healthy, if it wasn’t for you. Thank you mom and dad, for being so proud, giving, and loving. I guess in the end, it really isn’t about the weight loss. It’s about being happy, and I have never felt so full and happy in my life. Living healthy is just an added bonus. Keep up with me on Instagram! Follow me, stephanienbc, for paleo recipes, my postpartum body transformation, pictures of Eloise, and more!

invites to to start your holidays with a bang. Manitou Beach has graced the southwest end of Devils Lake since 1888. For generations, locals have spent summers there enjoying the beautiful lakes and sunshine, but for two local businessmen it was much more than a fond memory. For Dave Gajda and his partner Jose Malagon it was and is a perfect place for renovating and rebuilding the area. Over the last several years the partners have renovated or built five new commercial spaces, two residential guest cottages and are building 3 more spaces in 2015. Devils Lake Water sports also paid to have the partners renovate their building where the Farmers Market is now located during the summer season.
36
With each development the “Village of Manitou” is becoming the New England style resort village that the men had envisioned. Today, visitors will find improvements including the rebuilding of Manitou Bar and Grill, which was owned by Dave’s sister Marie, Devils Lake View Living, owned by Darlene Heller, The Buoy on the Lake owned by Monica Clark and Donna Baker, and Jenni’s Coffee & Cream, owned by Jennifer and Liz Glecker. Howard Hanna Real Estate Services also moved to The Village this past May, and Jerry’s Market, which is a full service grocery opened their doors in May 2013. In the Village, you will also find the newly renovated “Trillium House”, a beautiful historic house that offers weekly rentals,
and “Rob’s Rentals” offering pontoon boats, speed boats, jet ski rentals and more. Mark your calendars because the Village of Manitou will be bringing in the holidays with a bang beginning November 13 - 17 with a “Ladies hunting season” at the Buoy on the Lake. Devils Lake View Living will offer “Girls Shopping Weekend” and include a special discount, FREE Gift wrapping and “Enter to Win” a gift certificate for $50. This is a great time to start your Christmas Shopping or your own WISH LIST. On Saturday, Nov. 15th, The Manitou Bar & Grill will be hosting a “Make your own tile art” event from noon - 4 PM as well as offering drink specials. On Saturday, November 22, The Buoy at the Lake and Devils Lake View Living will also offer “Early Bird Black Friday” with special promotions. December 6th will offer visitors a chance to visit with Santa and his elves on the pontoon (how else would Santa visit the beautiful lake community) and even have their pictures taken. The Manitou Bar & Grill also offers live entertainment every Friday and Saturday evening. Devils Lake View Living is open for business year round so stop by and visit.

trust basics:
not all trusts are created equal

Because Trusts are versatile, they are often part of estate planning. There are many types of trusts available enabling the creator to accomplish a multitude purposes. To name just a few, trusts can be drafted to manage your assets during periods of incapacity, control how your assets are distributed following your death, provide tax savings, protect your beneficiary’s inheritances from creditors, and provide for your favorite charities. Trust terminology has specific names for the individual(s) that creates the trust, the individual(s) that receive the benefits of the trust, and the individual(s) that hold title to the trust’s property and manages the trust’s assets. The creator of the trust may be called a grantor, a settlor, or a trustor. These terms are interchangeable and may also refer to one or more people. The individual(s) that receive the benefit of the trust are called beneficiaries. The beneficiaries can receive a benefit when the trust is established, at some point in the future, or upon a contingency such as if and when trust assets exceed a certain dollar amount. The individual(s) holding title to and managing trust assets may be one or more individuals, a corporation such as a bank or investment company, or a combination of one or more individuals and a corporation. Trusts can be revocable or irrevocable. Revocable trusts enable the creator to modify or revoke the trust before incapacity or death. Revocable trusts allow for income to be taxed on the individual’s personal tax return and enable assets to be transferred upon death without probate; however, revocable
trusts do not offer asset protection or tax advantages for the creator. In contrast, irrevocable trusts may offer asset protection and tax advantages, but cannot be modified once assets are transferred. The means that once the trust is established according to the creator’s guidelines, the creator loses control of the assets transferred into an irrevocable trust in order to obtain asset protection and tax advantages. Trusts can only control the management and distribution of assets owned by the trustee of the trust and therefore must be funded. Funding means the deliberate action of transferring asset ownership from you as an individual to the trustee of the trust. Funding can be accomplished while you are alive or upon your death. If funded while alive, you will transfer ownership to the trustee. If funded upon you death, your probate estate or assets with beneficiary designations made payable to the trust will fund the trust. The uses of trusts in estate planning come with potential advantages and disadvantages. Potential advantages include the reduction of estate taxes, shielding of assets from creditors, reducing or avoiding the expense of probate, protecting assets for individuals lacking financial skills, providing for your support when incapacitated, or providing benefits for a charity. Potential disadvantages include the cost associated with establishing and maintaining a trust, a possible lack of control over assets transferred to a trust, and a potential higher tax rate for undistributed trust income.

My Journey
Sabbatical...
noun : a period of time during which someone does not work at his or her regular job and is able to rest, travel, do research, etc.
I can foresee regret. Which is a big no-no for me and anyone who knows me, or reads this column or my blog, knows that my journey has but one theme: finding and living the life I truly want to live.
Some of you may keep up to date with my blog, so this might be redundant for you, but something unexpected and unearthing happened to me last month. As you all know, I’ve been planning to start a business for the past few years and when I was ready to put pen to paper, I hesitated. The well trained business loan officer was prodding me about my business venture and I had an epiphany (a.k.a. – a mini-meltdown) in his office; I realized that this business venture might possibly be something I don’t really want to do. And now, my world is turned upside down.
So I have decided to take a sabbatical. From my life. I am going to take the next three months and I’m going to work on things in my life that I’ve been wanting to do. I have resigned from bar tending. This job was great money working two nights a week but believe it or not, it was a major stresser in my life and those 16 hours sucked a lot of life from my week. I’m going to finish my copywriting course, a grant writing course, I’m going to work on marketing and advertising consulting (I already have one client.. An actual paying client!), I’m going to volunteer, and I’ve even went as far as to enlist the help of a mentor/life coach.
It’s been a long road since moving to Williston and starting on this adventure. I’ve had some setbacks with housing, personal relationships, and the path my career was heading. I’ve never been quite sure of myself which translated to not being ready to start the business.
I’m challenging myself these next few months to take a step back, to stop stressing so much about what should be, and just learn. Learn about myself, learn more about the business idea I’m struggling to accept and explore other ideas that might make me happy.
After months of saving every single extra penny I had; I picked up an extra shift at my second job, added a third job and picked up shifts at the restaurant I used to work at, sold stuff I wasn’t using online and threw that money in the kitty too, I had saved the money I needed and it was time to start the business. Now it was real. It’s just been a great theory, a way to achieve being debt free in a short amount of time, but now that it’s real, I’m not so sure.
With the new year fast approaching, I’d like to challenge the readers (yeah you!) to go along this path with me. Take a step back from your hectic life and take the time to do something you just really enjoy. Think about what makes you tick, makes you smile, or something that when you’re doing it, time seems to fly by. Let’s try to incorporate things in our lives that enrich it, not bog it down. Life is short, forget the rest. Let’s find a way to live it the best possible way.
I’m stuck at a crossroads. I don’t actually know what to do next. Which for me, is rare. I’ve always had a “plan”, a “next goal”. I feel like this is the first actual crossroads that I have faced in my adult life that could dramatically affect the trajectory on which my life is headed. If I go down one path over the other,
Wishing the readers a very joyous and safe holiday season! Let’s take on 2015 wearing our passion on our sleeves, determination in our heart, a twinkle in our eye, and a smile on our face. Let’s set the world on fire!

Simply Healthy
Steps to staying healthy this season. Keep the focus on fun, not food Most holidays are associated with certain foods. Christmas at your house might not be the same without your aunt’s green been casserole, but that doesn’t mean food has to be the main focus. Instead, throw yourself into the other rituals a holiday brings, whether it’s caroling or tree trimming. Cut down your own Christmas tree. Rather than buying a tree from a roadside lot where the trees have been drying out for weeks, visit a tree farm that allows you to cut your own such as Loveberry Tree Farm in Quincy. It will be fresher and probably less expensive than they are at the lot. You’ll burn off calories and combat some of the blood-sugar effects of the sugar cookie you snuck by traipsing around the grounds in search of just the right tree. And your family will have one more fond holiday memory to look back on. Indulge in only the most special holiday treats. Skip the store-bought cookies at Christmas, but do save some calories in your ‘budget’ to sample treats that are homemade and special to your family, such as your favorite Yule log cake. Training yourself what to indulge in and what to skip is much like budgeting your mad money: Do you want to blow it on garbage that you can buy anywhere or on a very special, one-ofa-kind souvenir? Just don’t completely deprive yourself on festive days - your willpower will eventually snap, and you’ll end up overeating. Make the change! The habit: Staying physically active during the holidays. The result: Gaining less weight over the years. The proof: A study conducted by the U.S. government found adults gained, on average, more than a pound of body weight during the winter holidays - and that they were not at all likely to shed that weight the following
42 36
year. (That may not sound like a lot now, but it means having to buy roomier pants after a few Christmases pass.) The good news is that the people who reported the most physical activity through the holiday season showed the least weight gain. Some even managed to lose weight. Stock the freezer with healthy meals. Everyone’s overly busy during the holidays, and most of us want to spend our time shopping, decorating, or seeing friends and family, which leaves less time to cook healthy meals. Take defensive action several weeks ahead of time by cooking meals intended specifically for the freezer. You’ll be thankful later when you can pop one of the meals into the oven or microwave and turn your attention instead to writing out holiday cards with a personal message in each. Pour the gravy and sauces lightly. You may not be able to control what’s being served at a holiday meal, but you can make the turkey, roast beef, and even mashed potatoes and stuffing much healthier by foregoing the sauce or gravy or spooning on just a small amount. Toast the new year with just one glass of bubbly. You may be celebrating, but that doesn’t mean that that you should send your meal plan (and your judgment) on holiday. Alcohol can interfere with your blood sugar by slowing the release of glucose into the bloodstream; it also contain a lot of calories - 89 calories per glass of white wine or champagne, 55 calories in a shot of vodka, and 170 calories in a pint of stout beer. What’s more, alcohol breaks down your inhibitions and judgment, which makes you that much less likely to resist the junk foods that you would otherwise be able to pass up.

mud room mayhem!
S.O.S. Sort, Organize, and Simplify Your Life!
As the winter weather gets messier, the first room your family uses as they enter your house takes the brunt of the abuse! Whether you have a large, functional mud room or just a small dropping spot, it’s important to make the most of your space by organizing for maximum efficiency. Here are some tips to take that space from mayhem to magnificent:
By Peggie Bildner Simply Hers Magazine
• If you don’t have a defined space (your entry door takes you right into a main room), carve one out by strategically placing a couple of furniture pieces to define the area. For example, a small dresser (great for holding papers that need to come and go out the door in one drawer, hats and mittens in another) placed at the correct angle can give the feeling of a defined area. If you have a little wall space, add some hooks or a coat rack with pegs right inside the door. • No room inside your door? Consider creating a mud room in your garage. Pick a convenient, unused corner close to the door and re-think how it can be an extension of your house. • Determine the function of the space. If this is where book bags and boots land, instead of fighting it, make convenient places for them. Decide what needs to be stored (short term and/or seasonal) or what could be moved to a different space (long term storage/out of season.) • Two must-haves for this space- a bench for taking off boots or a place to sit down shopping bags, and hooks for convenient hanging of book bags and purses. Children are much more likely to hang something on a hook at their level than to bother with a hanger in a closet. A bench with a lid doubles as a place to put hats and gloves. Or a plain bench that sits up from the floor, gives you a place underneath to slide in a boot tray for dropping off drippy footwear.
44
• If you have a good-sized room/area, make “zones” to keep it organized and functional. Some of the things you may want to find spaces for are sports gear, recycling, a shelf with an electrical outlet for recharging (rather than tying up a kitchen outlet and counter space), storage for cleaning supplies, a place to wash up or pot plants. • A combination of open and closed shelving works best, giving you a place for things that you need to see/remember (school papers, mail to send, keys) and things that need to be kept out of sight (long term storage.) • Find ways to get all family members on board to stay organized with creativity such as a framed photo of each person hung above a coat hook. Paint an old dresser, using chalkboard paint on the front of the drawers to write family members’ names. Hang an attractive file holder to give each child a place to find their signed school papers, permission slips, etc. in their designated folder right at the door. • Consider a door to shut the mud room off from the main house if you don’t want to worry about this area being “guest-ready.” • If you’re not able to shut it off, try to extend decorating elements from the rest of your home into this area. Even functional storage can reflect your decorating taste whether it’s adding some rustic (galvanized pails or bins), retro (old school lockers) or country (baskets) storage elements. Once you have determined your needs, defined a space and set up areas to function for your family, give it a finishing touch by adding a quote or some words of inspiration on the wall. After all, this area is most likely the first place your family sees when they return home and the last place they see when they are leaving. Why not send them off with a word of encouragement or smile?

THE HEARTFELT GIFT By Carol Jean Stockwell
The operating room seemed so bright and big. Nurses were right there to make sure I was comfortable. A nurse told me they were waiting to hear from the doctor, he was making sure the donated heart was acceptable. I told her if possible I didn’t want to be put to sleep until I heard the surgery was really going to happen. Soon another nurse answered a phone and I heard her mentioning my name. She came over to me and told me it was looking like the heart was fine but it would be a few minutes more before she could call to get the final word. Fifteen minutes later, I heard her saying to the others in the room, “The surgery is a go for Stockwell.” They immediately came over to put me to sleep. The last thing I remember is praying for God to be with me and the hospital staff. Within minutes I was instructed to breath into a mask and I could feel the room fading away……
46
This heart transplant surgery was the culmination of a long journey that really started back in November of 2008 when I had a heart attack. I didn’t recognize any of the symptoms and did so many things wrong. I had flown out alone to visit grandkids in Wyoming when I realized that I was extremely tired. I watched my son and grandkids swim in the pool and I could have fallen asleep sitting there in the chair! I had to take an elevator upstairs to our hotel room because I couldn’t walk up the stairs. I couldn’t lie down to sleep. I consulted a doctor at the local health clinic and was told I was having heart trouble. I decided to change my ticket and fly home the next day instead of going to the hospital. I FLEW HOME ALONE. I had to be wheeled in a wheel chair at my three stops on the plane to catch each flight. Within a week I was in the hospital in Kalamazoo fighting for my life. I had had a heart attack sometime but also had a puncture to a vein during the heart catherization. At one point I had to be shocked back to life. I was in the hospital for 22 days. I was
given a pacemaker and then by Thanksgiving, I was home. It was at that point when I knew my beloved career of 35 years in education was over.
granddaughter arrived from Atlanta along with my neighbor. I was not lacking support from family and friends.
By the spring of 2012, I was very sick again. I had no appetite, was short of breath, and my feet were swollen. My cardiologist sent me to the University of Michigan where I had open heart surgery to save my life. I had a pump (called a LVAD system-a left ventricular assistance device) put into my heart to help my heart circulate blood through my body. I was on batteries during the day and on a machine at night. I was in the hospital the entire months of July and August, working hard to regain enough strength to walk again. They didn’t know how long the LVAD would keep me alive but I was getting stronger and doing well. My husband took such good care of me but by December I was weak and back in Ann Arbor for blood transfusions.
We were told that my cardiologist was checking on the heart to see if it was the one they wanted. It was surprising when a nurse told us there was no guarantee we’d have a heart transplant. If the Dr. didn’t think it was the right one for me, the surgery would not take place.
It was January 2013 when my cardiologist recommended a heart transplant. He asked me how I felt about it. He said, “You are very quiet and I want to know what you are thinking.” I paused and said, “I know very little about a heart transplant but I have to take your advice. You are my Dr. and I have much to live for. I need to do what you feel is best for me.” The next month was full of tests to be sure the rest of my body and organs were healthy. I was approved in February. I was hospitalized at least once a month for 5- 8 days for blood transfusions from February through May. I needed to stay within four hours of the hospital in case a heart became available. I was to stay away from crowds to stay healthy. We gave up going to church and our pastor visited us often as we stayed close to home. In May, my name was on the top of the list (level 1A) for a heart transplant. The night of June 14 at 3:00 am the phone rang. My husband answered and said to me, “It’s the University of Michigan. Dr. Pagani believes they have a heart for you and they want to talk to you.” I remember saying, “Oh my gosh!!” I repeated it at least three times before I got to the phone. They asked me if I was feeling well, had a cold or had been sick. I said I was fine and was told to be at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor by 7:00 a.m. There were few words to say, except to pray. We had talked many times about this. I called my daughter and son, assuring them we were calm and okay. I then called my sister in Atlanta and on the way to the hospital, my granddaughters and a friend, asking her to let our pastor know. Being in the hospital had become very common for me. I don’t remember feeling particularly nervous but I understood how serious this was for all of us. Soon my granddaughter was there from Grand Rapids. My sister and other
My family stayed with me and I felt such peace. The day went by fast. About 3:00 p.m. I began to feel a bit anxious knowing I would be going into the operating room about 4:00 pm. My family came in before I was moved for the surgery. I could feel tears coming but my husband, David, told me not to cry. “It is too hard on you and we’ll all start crying.” He and my son had been so encouraging that this would be successful. He continued to be solid support for me. As they wheeled me down the hall to the operating room, I saw a line of nurses behind computers at desks. They suddenly all stood up as I passed them and I could hear them saying, “We’ll be here tomorrow. We’ll see you tomorrow.” I could feel the tears again as they cheered me on. The surgery took about five hours that Friday. The Dr. came into the waiting room and told my family, “Everything went fine!! I was not conscious until that Sunday morning. I kept trying to wake up and say something but couldn’t. Then I saw my husband, son, and sister. I remember saying to them, “Happy Father’s Day.” I remember the smiles and relief on their faces. The nurses had me sit in a chair that day and I could feel strength in my body. The nurse told me I would feel like I had been hit by a truck that day but each day would get easier. And I did get stronger every day. I received wonderful care and was in the hospital for just twelve days. My daughter came from Idaho to stay with us for the first three weeks that I was home. Friends and neighbors sent food and cards and were so thoughtful and encouraging. At first I was returning to Ann Arbor for a heart biopsy every week to check for heart rejection. Then it got to be every two weeks, once a month, and now I go every other month for the biopsy. Each week on Thursday night, I would say how many weeks it had been since we got the call. By six months. I finished cardio rehab and had gained so much strength. Last winter, I was able to spend January in Florida. I would walk the beach picking up shells, remembering how I had wondered if I would ever feel the beach sand on my feet or even see the beach again. I cannot express how thankful we are to the family who was so giving to make this all possible. During the wait and preparation, I
knew that someone would lose their life if this was to be possible for me. I feel so deeply for this person and their family. I still often put my hands crossed over my heart, in awe of this beating gift of life. I know nothing about the person who gave it to me. I do not forget and cannot even truly comprehend the great loss suffered by some family who turned their tragedy into such a wonderful gift for me and my family. I hope I can live my life to be a blessing to others. God must have special plans for me to receive this gift. I must do justice to the person and their family who gave me this heart. I carry a part of their life inside me. I would like to encourage everyone to consider giving the gift of life by donating organs. Until it personally touches your life you don’t realize the impact this gift can make for someone. I thought I knew, but I didn’t until it affected me so intimately. People spend months in the hospital waiting for organs. Many do not get a donor in time. Please consider giving somebody the blessing of hope by doing it now. Don’t wait! We never know what life holds from one day to the next. But thanks to God and the unselfish family of my donor, I have reason to believe I will be around to enjoy many more!
UPDATE: A year after surgery, I had the option of sending a letter off to Gift of Life in Ann Arbor for the donor’s family. I did that in June but did not receive a reply. I thought they might not respond. They had lost a loved one and my not want to respond. Then, on October 22, after I wrote this story but before it went to press, I received two letters forwarded through Gift of Life. One was a letter from the donor’s grandparents and another from the donor’s parents. His parents wrote, “We wish to say how grateful we are that our son’s gift has helped you and your family I know our child would have wanted this for you. He was by nature a giving, caring person. Please accept this wonderful gift. Jesus knit this for our child long ago and has commissioned in his divine wisdom to have you receive it. God goes the praise.” His grandparents wrote, “Thank you so much for your letter. It gave us great comfort reading it. It gave me strength just knowing that you are getting stronger and healthier everyday. It also gave us great comfort knowing our Grandson’s heart lives on.” “Without knowing you, after reading your letter I would have chosen you to get his heart and I know he would have felt the same ...Thank you for making it possible for his life to go on. We also will be praying for you and your family and thank you again for giving us comfort in knowing his life lives on.” These letters are so precious to me.

Business spotlight
Bretty’s the place shop for all things colonial, country and primitive By Sarah Gray Simply Hers Magazine
People come from across the county, state and nation to shop at Bretty’s and Bretty’s in General on US 12 just east of Jonesville. One customer buying her merchandise said she had driven up from Ohio. When she told friends where she was going that day she said she was going to Hillsdale “and Bretty’s.” Owner Cynthia Broesamle opened the store 26 years ago as a colonial reproduction store and while it still remains a shop with the colonial look, she says her business has evolved over the years. “People seem to like our style,” she says. “We have a lot of word-of-mouthbusiness and a lot of repeat customers.” Bretty’s carries country style furniture, lighting, paint, stencils, and a variety of home decor items. “We are a home furnishing store,” Cynthia says who owns the store with her husband Max. Customers looking to create a traditional look in their kitchen, dining room or living room, or trying to find the perfect exterior period lighting for their colonial-style house can find all that and more at Bretty’s. Bretty’s specializes in accent pieces for the home from hand-loomed bedding, textiles, prints, rugs, and hand wrought hardware. “It all boils down to the look,” Cynthia says on what she stocks in the store. One way to achieve that look is through paint, which they also sell. Olde Century Colors paint is finely crafted, comes in a wide variety of colors for interior or exterior use, and can be applied to wood, metal or iron. A few years after opening Bretty’s, the store across from her on Sterling Road became available and Cynthia and her husband decided to expand Bretty’s and the merchandise they sell by opening Bretty’s in General .
48
“We expanded our customer base when we opened the second store,” she says. Bretty’s in General carries a variety of nautical theme merchandise, items to furnish a cabin or cottage and a full line of shower curtains and window treatments. They also carry a line of gourmet foods. “It’s a more contemporary look,” she says of her second store – which has been open for more than 20 years. Two stores equal double the work load and Cynthia says she would be remise if she didn’t acknowledge Theresa Flynn, Karen Sparks and Ellona Baffi, the wonderful ladies who have worked with her for so many years. “We work as a team,” she says. With the holiday season in full swing both Bretty’s stores have been busy decorating for Christmas. This year Cynthia and her team are going to try something a bit different with the merchandise and create vignettes of the products rather than grouping all like items together, “so customers can see what it might look like in their home,” she says. The stores are also specializing in American made holiday merchandise. During the holiday season Bretty’s and Bretty’s in General will be open seven days a week. They will also be hosting an open house in conjunction with “Christmas in Jonesville” December 5 & 6. Beginning in November both Bretty’s stores will be open Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4 p.m. They are located at 2971 E. Sterling Rd in Jonesville. Book and Author Reviews
By Nancy Ryan Simply Hers Magazine
As I sit down to write this, I watch the leaves falling and the colors beginning to change. The biggest craze afoot in the reading nation is Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl. The film version (starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike) is due out, and everyone is talking about it. I must confess that I read it a couple years ago, and gave it a 3.5 out of 5 on my personal rating score sheet. My description of the book at that time was, “A strange story.” Maybe I should rethink that rating, as it did prompt me to read her other two books, Dark Places and her first book, Sharp Objects. Again, “strange stories.” Without sounding the spoiler alert, Gone Girl finds wife Amy missing on her fifth wedding anniversary. Husband Nick’s image (who is the town golden-boy) has begun to fade with his lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. All is not as it seems between this couple, and the plot turns bizarre. I am looking forward to seeing the movie, with the hope they don’t alter it too much. Author Gillian Flynn is writing the screenplay, so it should not vary much from the novel. Dark Places introduces us to 32 year old Libby Day, who is the only surviving member of a family massacre. Her testimony as a seven year old girl has put her 15 year old brother, Ben, in prison for life. She has been contacted by “The Kill Club”, a secret society obsessed with notorious crimes, who pumps her for details of the grisly event. As she delves further into the crime, new information about her and brother Ben, and the day of the massacre evolve. Maybe the wrong person is in prison…or maybe not… This book, too, is slated for a Hollywood whodunit movie.

Sharp Objects is the story of journalist Camille Preaker. She has been sent from Chicago to her small hometown to cover the story of the serial killings of two young girls. She herself is from a dysfunctional home and is a “cutter,” resulting from her neurotic, hypochondriac mother. Camille’s younger sister died at an early age, and soon she begins to uncover unpleasant, scary things
about her estranged mom, and then her step-sister. This book takes on the very real disease of Munchausen Syndrome. This is a psychiatric disorder, wherein those affected feign disease or illness to gain attention. Again, it is bizarre but fascinating reading. Author Gillian Flynn is definitely writing books of the genre of Stephen King, Dean Koontz, or Joy Fielding. In People Magazine Flynn indicated that she gave her Gone Girl manuscript to her husband to read, and told him “if there’s anything that hits too close to home, highlight it, because I’d rather stay married to you than keep a line or two.” Hmm. About plans for her next novel, she indicated she would stay close to home with the new theme, as “Everything in my life seems to turn into fodder for a creepy story!” There are a trio of other book picks that I discovered in People and Good Housekeeping. First, Jason Mott’s The Wonder of All Things. After her best friend is injured in a plane crash, teen Ava Campbell mysteriously heals him. She is soon hounded by the media for her miraculous powers. Another pick, is a ghost story by Garth Stein, entitled A Sudden Light. Jones hopes to sell his family’s rundown mansion on Puget Sound. His ancestors have other plans, when one appears to him! Lastly, Reunion is a family drama by Hannah Pittard. Heroine Kate flies back to her hometown for her philandering father’s funeral. She reacquaints herself with siblings and four of her dad’s former wives. Emotions run high as she learns to forgive, if not forget. Three of my favorite authors have new books coming out, too. Author (of The Husband’s Secret), Liane Moriarty releases Big Little Lies; The Mitford series’ author, Jan Karon, blesses us with her latest Somewhere Safe with Somebody Good; and Lee Child thrills us once again in his latest Jack Reacher book Personal. Can’t wait! See you at the library!

Remember a couple months ago when I was hiding out in my basement? Do you remember someone was after me and my husband wanted me to give him money or he was gonna spill his guts as to my whereabouts? I believe many of you might have wondered if I would ever see the light of day again. Well, I saw the light all right and that light just about put me over the edge. The light was six people I thought were trying to help me; thought being the key word here. A few columns ago I mentioned I had two Facebook friends. I won’t go into the fact that one of those friends tried to defriend me, but I wasn’t havin’ it. I don’t care what she says or what the legal department at Facebook tells me, we’re still friends. So anyhow six plus two equals eight! Count ‘em, eight friends! Give me time and I could make double digits. Some of you might say eight isn’t many friends at all. Some might even suggest that I talk to a professional about my personality defects. Do you really think so? Nah! Me neither. The fact that so many people I’ve dealt with over the years have disowned me is not a relevant issue here. I realize I might be the only common denominator, but I think that’s pure coincidence. That, however, is a subject for another time. Right now, I want to tell you what my six new friends at Meals on Wheels did for me. I was sitting in my basement bemoaning the fact that nobody loved me enough to help me out of there. I know many of you are thinking that should have given me a clue about some of those unresolved issues I might have. I’ll have you know there is no “some”. All my issues are unresolved, but this isn’t about me. Wait … what am I saying? Of course it’s about me. I was the one sitting in the basement whining. I was the one sitting in the basement crying. I was the one sitting in the basement … well, you get my point.

I heard my husband come in the back door and holler down the stairs that he was going to throw some mail to me. Me? I wondered if it had my very own name
on it. Oh, the anticipation! Who could be sending me mail? I had already applied for every “current resident” credit card that had been offered and I had written back to each and every politician that sent a card asking for my vote. I had even responded to all the cable TV companies promising me better reception in my basement so I wondered who could be writing to me now. The return address said Adrian Senior Center – Meals on Wheels. There was a lot of somethin’ in that envelope ‘cause it was really fat. What in the world could they be sending me? I tore open the end of the envelope, but before I could see what was inside, a note fell out. It read: “Here is your ransom money to get out of the basement”. It had a bunch of smiley faces at the bottom along with a tee hee and a ha ha. My interpretation of the note read like this: Dear Willie, we miss you. We want you released from the basement. Your husband owes you an apology. We have taken up a collection for your ransom money. We hope it helps. See you soon. It was signed “Your friends at Meals on Wheels”. How sweet! They must really like me!! There, I say! Take that to those of you who thought I would be in this basement forever. There, I say again! Take that you naysayers who thought I had no friends to help me. I was so excited!! I wondered how much they had collected. Judging by the size of the envelope, it had to be a lot. I know those people are far from rich so they must have gotten others to contribute. I was hoping so. They would be potential friends for any future problems I might have. As I ripped open the envelope, I was doing a happy dance and singing, I’m in the money, I’m in the mo … Wait! What? No-o-o! It can’t be! Tell me it ain’t so! They wouldn’t! Oh, but they did. It’s … it’s … it’s Monopoly money - $641 to be exact. Oh yeah, let’s not forget the gold foil covered chocolate candies that added up to $2.25. Well wasn’t that just sweet. What was I supposed to do with $643.25 in fake money? Give it to my two minus six friends? Thanks Sylvia, Lucia, Carla, Ruth, Kasondra, and Ken. You have officially put me right over the edge.

Taking care of a young child is hard work. When they cry, it may seem even harder. At times, you may feel angry, tense, worried or sad. It’s OK to have these feelings, but NEVER take them out on a child. Don’t lose your cool. Take a break. Shaking a baby, for even seconds, can result in cerebral palsy, blindness, paralysis, brain damage and even death.

L to R Luis & Alan with their dogs- Toby & Simba, Kathy with her dogDelta (& Daphne laying down in front), Peggie & Buzz with Kacie.
My tail hasn’t stopped waggin’ for weeks because I’ve been so doggone excited to tell you about my grrrrreat big adventure! Back in September, my ‘Mom’ and ‘Dad’ put me in the car and took me on one long ride! After about seven hours, we ended up near Buffalo, New York. As we got out of the car, ‘Mom’ smiled when she saw a great big sign that welcomed us to the Keeshond Family Reunion! I wasn’t sure what that meant, but in a few minutes a gate opened up and I was greeted by four other dogs that looked just like ME!?! It turned out that my two brothers, Toby and Simba from Connecticut, as well as my sister, Delta and her “adopted” sister, Daphne, had all gathered for a reunion! It has been two years since I’ve seen them and I was a little overwhelmed by the fur ball frenzy that greeted me! It turns out that I look a lot like my brother, Simba and my sister looks a lot like the other brother, Toby. I have to confess…I think I was the roundest (let’s not say fattest)….’Mom’ says it has something to do with too many treats but I prefer to think I’m just the fluffiest! For several hours we ran around the yard, did a little digging, a little jumping, a lot of barking, got lots of treats and took pictures. But my favorite part was being hugged and petted by my ‘Aunt’ and ‘Uncles’. In fact, living up to our nicknames of “Velcro dogs”, we all spent a lot of time just laying around at our ‘parents’ feet and feeling the family love! I suspected they could hardly tell us apart and wondered if I might actually end up getting left or going home with the wrong person! My sister, Delta and her sister, Daphne, kept jumping in and out of the swimming pool. I wasn’t ready for that but one of my brothers got confused and tried to walk on the water- he had to do a fast dog paddle to recover from that misstep- BOL!
Our people had fun sharing stories about how they found us in Jamestown, PA. I was the first to leave home, then Delta, and my brothers were the last two. (There is another brother, but sadly, he hasn’t kept in touch.) Alan and Luis (my brothers’ ‘dads’) told how they had lost their two beloved dachshunds after 18 years and took a test online to decide their best choice for a new puppy. They both took the test independently and even though they had never heard of a Keeshond before, both matched with the breed! Kathy (my sister’s ‘mom’) already has had two other keeshonds and decided she wanted a puppy to help her through a tough time. They all agreed that we are perfectly matched and ended up exactly where we were meant to be! They also shared stories about our puppy antics and my ‘Mom’ was relieved to find out I wasn’t the only wild child in the group. After returning home, there were lots of photos shared on Facebook and our ‘first Mom’, Kim in Jamestown, posted this comment: “I’m glad you all finally get to meet in person. I hope you all have a wonderful visit. I couldn’t have hoped for better families for my puppies. Thank you all so much for giving them the best lives they could ever have.” ‘Mom’ says some people think a dog reunion is silly. But we think that anytime people can come together to make new friends, share a common interest, laugh, hug and make memories, it is time well spent. And of course, if the day includes a car ride and treats, it all adds up to one pawesome adventure!
Left: The four siblings chilling out (in the plants!) after a fur-flying meet and greet! When ‘stepsister’ Daphne realized she was being left out, she photo-bombed us! Right: Me (in front) and my sister, Delta, enjoying some sister bonding. When my brothers tried to pick on me, Delta came flying out of nowhere and got between us. ‘Mom’ says like a true sister, she had my back!

This column is dedicated to Daphne. My beloved Keeshond ‘stepsister’ who lost her fight with cancer shortly after this reunion. I’m so glad she was having a good day when we got to meet her. She will always hold a special place in our hearts. RIP sweet Daphne.”

Gray Matters
Three’s A crowd
I have three children. I have three adorable children age seven, five and three. I have three sweet, funny, beautiful children age seven, five and three who get along with each other – sometimes.
By Sarah Gray Simply Hers Magazine
To state the obvious, three is an odd number. So it stands to reason that much of the time someone is going to be left out. There have been times, however, – large chunks of time even – 30 minutes, an hour, even several hours, when they have all gotten along, and gotten along well. Usually it involves an elaborate idea thought up by the oldest and the younger two are ordered around. Catch all that on a good day and the giggling and laughing may go on long enough for me to fold a couple loads of laundry or *gasp* read a book in peace. More often than not, however, when the third child gets added to the mix, someone gets unhappy. Interestingly enough, it does not seem to matter which two kids are paired up to begin with. Naturally it would be assumed that the two girls would gang up and exclude the lone boy, but sometimes the younger two (separated by a mere 19 months) like to keep out the big bad older sister and then other times my son wants to be a “big kid” so he and his older sister exclude the youngest. It seems any combination of two of my kids can get along swimmingly. Add the third and chaos likely ensues. Two very clear examples come to mind – both a which have happened in a five-day span. My son recently turned five and for his birthday he got a “big kid” bike with training wheels. My oldest has a similar bike (same training wheels) and they decided that anyone who did not have a bike like theirs was a baby – which of course included their little sister who is still riding
64
a tricycle. Never mind that my son has been riding a bike just like his three-year-old sister’s the day before, now he was a big kid like his big sister and could not stoop to playing with “babies.” Needless to say there were many tears shed by my youngest. Then just days later – and the bike incident a distant memory – the younger two were enjoying the beautiful weather playing outside in the leaves while their older sister was inside doing her homework. For almost an hour I watched them run around the yard, ride their bikes and have what looked to be deep intellectual conversations where I no doubt believe they were solving the world’s problems. Then the oldest finished her homework, looked around and saw only boring old Mom, and decided she too would go outside and play. Now, you may not believe me (and I agree that I do tend to exaggerate sometimes for effect), but I SWEAR, not two minutes had passed from the time my oldest shut the back door to go out and play when my son came inside crying. In those tiny 120 seconds the oldest had managed to undo all the goodwill between her younger siblings and had formed an alliance with her sister against her brother. “They won’t play with me,” he wailed. Then proceeded to tell me in detail all the mean things his sisters were doing to him. He could have been exaggerating a bit too, but I really don’t know where he would get that from! It all can happen that fast. One minute happy as clams, the next they are using physical violence against each other. The teen years ought to be real fun …
Simply Hilar ious I was walking with my 4-yearold daughter. She picked up something off of the ground and started to put it into her mouth. I took the item away from her and asked her not to do that. “Why?” my daughter asked. “Because it has been on the
ground, you don’t know where its been, its dirty and it probably has germs,” I replied. At this point, my daughter looked at me with total admiration and asked, “Mom, how do you know all of this stuff? You are so smart.” I was thinking quickly and replied, “All moms know this stuff. It is on the MOM test. You have to know it, or they don’t let
you be a Mom.” We walked along in silence for two or three minutes and I realized she was still pondering this new information. “Oh... I get it!” she exclaimed, “So if you don’t pass the test you have to be the Dad.” “Exactly.” I replied with a big smile on my face.

life is the berries -
A Gift for You...
Don’t you just love getting tips to make life less complicated? I sure do. So here is my gift to you this season, my list of tips for you to simplify living for now and one life-changing suggestion to alter your life forever. So unwrap this present from me to you… By Laura Loveberry Author, Speaker, Teacher
• I never use the tab bread closer for intended bread wrapper purpose: we replace those bread tabs and annoying twisty wires with easy quick-release clothespins. Who has time to align the tab or twist the wire when a clothespin takes 2 seconds? Keep a clothespins box in kitchen for bread and chip bag reclosing. The plastic bread wrapper tab can be repurposed to slip underneath a broken flip-flop strap. The bread tab on the bottom side of toe strap prevents the strap from pulling back through and saves the day in a pinch. Also, the same type of bread tab is perfect for identification marking the jungle of wires behind your office desk. Just Sharpie label and attach to wires. • Give yourself 60% more room in your shower without a major remodel. Install the hotel-style curve shower bar for your existing shower curtain and enjoy your shower with plenty of elbow room. No more shower curtain clinging to your body! Also, a plastic coated straight curtain rod placed high on the back side of shower is the perfect place to hang dripping wet bathing suits or hand-washed items because they are out of sight and drip into the shower. Also, keep toothbrush/toothpaste in the shower for timesaving multitasking. • In the office, use a bottom file drawer within arms length of your desk chair to keep a small plastic trash container. This streamlines the office look and is convenient to reach for throwaway papers. • Screw C-shape hooks inside the kitchen cupboard doors to hang car keys, measuring spoons, and measuring cups. Whalaaa! No more sorting through the drawer to find those hiding spoons and cups, or searching ramrod all through the house for the keys. • Keep 4 tall/thin-style laundry baskets in laundry room marked DARKS, WHITES, COLORS, and TOWELS/JEANS. This
66 60
allows the clothing separating to be done as you go and saves sorting time later. • Black velvet hangers are sleek, thinner than plastic, and clothes never slip off. Get them. Might as well convert the spare bedroom into a closet and makeup station with clothes sorted by tops, bottoms, dress, pants, sleeve length, open or closed front, and color group. Clean out starting with 4 marked boxes: Friend Give Away, Throw Away, Mend, and/or Consignment Shop/Yard Sale/Goodwill. Ask these questions and get freedom from the overflow: Do I love it? Does it look good on me? Does it fit? Is it comfortable? Is it my color? Have I worn it in the last 3 years? Is it worn out, too faded, or torn? “Good bye and good riddance” to anything in the NO answer. Be free from the chaotic closet disaster and say hello to your organized retreat boudoir. • Get a real relationship with GOD. The Bible, the inspired Word of God, does have the remarkable tips for living. Read it. Study it. Grab the gusto of a God-guided life. Start with faith in Jesus Christ. The Bible is clear; “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 NIV. God sent his Son Jesus to come to earth, die on the cross for YOUR sins so YOU can be forgiven, rose from the dead so YOU can have eternal life. We cannot earn our way to heaven; it is a gift. Simply put your faith in Jesus and God’s plan for you to live forever with purpose in peace. Talk to that friend you know who has faith in Jesus Christ, and ask them to help explain this life-altering decision to choose God. I suggest finding a Bible teaching church that fits you. You can not be fully you without Jesus. Pursue the ONE TRUE GOD who loves you and is calling you now for a relationship forever with HIM. So this list of random life tips is my holiday gift to you. Obviously the last tip is the greatest gift of all. I wrap a special prayer around YOU, my Simply Hers readers, to embrace the peace of God amidst all the hustle and bustle of the season. Give yourself a heartfelt hug from me to you. You are beloved. Merry Christmas, my magazine reading friends!
HOLIDAYS GOT YOU DOWN? Yes, life can be hectic and we often feel as though we are in a never ending rat race, especially this time of year. Did you know God has an answer to all the frenzy and emptiness? He wants a relationship with us and with that relationship comes meaning and purpose for life. Sound intriguing?
We’d like to wish our good friends and neighbors a string of good tidings this Christmas:
We value your support at the holidays and all year. Thanks for doing business with us.

Faith, Prayer, Strength ... Abigale Taormina By Sarah Gray Simply Hers Magazine
To say Abigale is a fighter is an understatement. The truth is she has been fighting since before she was even born. Her parents, Christina and Joe Taormina, have been fighting and praying right alongside her. When she was 17 weeks pregnant, Christina and Joe, who own Pino’s Pizzeria and Fun Park in Hillsdale, went to their OBGYN for an ultrasound to find out if their fourth child was a boy or a girl. When the doctor, who Christina worked for at the time, took a long time coming in to speak with them, Christina knew something was wrong. “I’d never had to wait before,” Christina recalls, but adds “I think I already knew something was wrong. There was different movement than I had with my other pregnancies.” When the doctor finally came in to see them the news was not good. The ultrasound had shown that there were problems with the ventricles on their daughter’s brain and her spinal cord and her bones around it did not appear to be developing properly. It was a Friday, Christina recalls, and her youngest son Nathan’s third birthday and the doctors suggested that she set up an appointment to talk to specialists in Toledo or Ann Arbor on Monday. The Taormina’s knew they could not wait that long. They drove straight from their doctor’s office to Ann Arbor where Christina underwent a two-hour ultrasound. “They were looking for shadows on the spine and counting the vertebrae on the spine,” she said. Afterwards they were told their daughter had spina bifida. “We just went numb,” she says of the news. “I had worked in the medical field for 10 years and I had never heard the word spina bifida.”
68
According to the Spina Bifida Association, Spina Bifida literally means “split spine.” Spina Bifida happens
when a baby is in the womb and the spinal column does not close all of the way. If the opening is large enough, it allows part of the spinal cord to protrude through the opening in the bones. The cause of spina bifida is not completely known, but a dietary supplement with folic acid has been shown to be helpful in reducing the incidence of the disease. Faced with the news that their daughter may never walk, and may not even be able to breath, suck or swallow on her own after birth, Christina and Joe had some thinking and praying to do. One of their options was to abort. Devout Catholics, Christina and Joe talked with their family who had strong options on both sides. But Christina says it was her oldest son Joseph III “Joey”, who was 12 at the time, who was the deciding factor. Along with Joseph and Nathan Christina and Joe have another son, Anthony. Unaware that he had been listening to the adult’s discussion, Christina saw that Joey was very upset and had been crying. When she learned he had heard what the family had been talking about, she decided his opinion mattered just as much as anyone’s, since he was going to be greatly affected by this as well. To this day, the thought of the five words her son said next still bring her to tears. “I think she deserves a chance,” he said. And they never looked back. The rest of Christina’s pregnancy was full of ultrasounds to keep an eye the ventricles in Abigale’s brain. In addition to spina bifida, Abigale also has Chiari II. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke chiari malformations are structural defects in the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls balance. It blocks the flow of spinal fluid that surrounds and cushions the brain and spinal
and saw the medical team rush to his daughter’s crib. He rushed to get Christina and by the time they returned, Abigale was breathing on her own again. When they asked what had caused this, the nurse simply told them “she needed to go have a talk with God.” In the days that followed Christina would rub holy oil from Fr. Mike on her daughter and recited the rosary to her many times a day. “I wanted her to hear my voice,” she said. At 10 days old, Abigale underwent a second surgery that inserted a shunt between the ventricles in her brain. When excess fluid builds up the shut opens and the fluid drains down a tube that runs under her skin behind her ear and down into the cavity around the abdomen where it is reabsorbed in to the body. Normally babies born with spina bifida are in the hospital for a least a month. Abigale was out in 13 days. Following her scare, she improved dramatically every day and when Christina told the doctor to prepare her daughter’s discharge papers because she was going to family dinner at her mother-in-law’s that afternoon, she says the doctor looked at her and said “I don’t see why not.” Once she was home Abigale had lots of work to do. Physical therapists, occupational therapist and speech therapists came to their home on the Ohio boarder three times a week. Joe, who was home on disability from a car accident worked with Abigale every day. Doctors told her parents she would probably never walk, but by 11 months old she was pulling herself up on furniture and toys and walking around them. “We practiced every day, all day,” says Joe. He says he knew she was strong because she would kick up a storm in the bathtub. cord—to and from the brain. Despite all these medical problems, Christina remembers Abigale being very active – especially at night. Joe would talk to her all the time and sing to her “70s and 80s love songs,” he said. As soon as he began to talk or sing, Christina would immediately feel her daughter move over in the womb to be closer to her Daddy’s voice and instantly calm down. Abigale’s love for her Daddy was shown even clearer the day she was born. Christina decided she wanted a c-section and after Abigale was born the baby was immediately whisked away to be examined. Joe was able to go in to see his daughter a few minutes later and when he walked into the room he saw that she was lying on her stomach with her face turned away from him, crying. Although he was all the way across the room he said to her “Its ok, Daddy’s here.” Abigale immediately stopped crying when she heard his voice, picked up her head and turned it toward her father. Abigale’s crying was a good thing because it meant that she could breath, suck and swallow on her own. Still she had a feeding tube inserted because at just 24 hours old she was going to undergo a 12-hour surgery to enclose her and protect her spine. Knowing this was going to be a difficult and potentially life threatening surgery, Christina called Fr. Mike Verschaeve at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Orion, the priest that married her and Joe. Even though he was three hours away, Fr. Mike was in Ann Arbor the next morning and baptized Abigale before her surgery. Following her surgery Joe and Christina took turns staying with their daughter in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and trying to get a little bit of sleep. The biggest scare came the day after Abigale’s surgery. Joe was on his way in to sit with his daughter when he heard a code blue
But because she had to work so hard to learn to walk, also due to the very little feeling she has on the bottom of her feet, she didn’t talk until she was three years old. “Now, we can’t get her to stop,” Joe jokes about his seven-year-old daughter. A first grader at Jonesville Elementary, Abigale is thriving. She has very few limitations and has been encouraged by her physical therapist to take tumbling to help her equilibrium. “She loves to bike and ride Power wheels,” Christina says. “She’s the spirit around here.” Since opening the pizzeria and fun park in May, Christina says Abigale can get a hole-in-one on almost every hole and has been known to join in to other customer’s games. “This place has blessed us and our family,” she says. Abigale goes in once a year for a check-up at the Mylo Clinic in Ann Arbor, but despite all the odds against her is continuing to thrive. This past summer Christina and Joe held a Spina Bifida Awareness putt-putt tournament and raised $600 which they donated to the Hillsdale ISD to help pay for shoes for children with special needs. Abigale wears braces around her ankles to help her balance, which require special shoes. “A lot of people were very pleased and excited that we did it,” Christina said, adding they are hoping to be able to put on the event annually. Vintage Chic and The crow’s nest By Sarah Gray Simply Hers Magazine
Add a bit of fun and flare to the home with Vintage Chic and The Crow’s Nest Looking for the perfect piece of furniture to finish off a room or an accent piece to dress it up? Vintage Chic and The Crow’s Nest in downtown Hillsdale is the place to go. Once two different businesses, across the street from each other on Howell Street, the stores joined together over the summer and the community has been very receptive to the merger.
Many of the products Gimenez and Wilkin sell are consignment pieces created by area artists including hats, mittens and scarves, jewelry, greeting cards, kid’s clothing and hair accessories and a variety of home décor pieces and a variety of vintage furniture and rare vintage finds.
“Our customers have been really happy,” says Suzanne Spiteri who owns The Crow’s Nest. “They are happy to be able to come into one store to do their shopping. They tell us all the time how beautiful it looks. Business has been very good.”
With the holiday season in full swing Vintage Chic and The Crow’s Nest will be pulling out all their holiday merchandise to brighten up the home or for a perfect gift for that certain someone. They sell gourmet foods for holiday gift baskets.
Spiteri, who has owned The Crow’s Nest for about three years, has the primitive and vintage furniture in the store – some of which she designed and created herself. The bench she made from a headboard that sits in the store’s front window is refurbished with chalk paint, which she sells in the store.
“The store will be sparkling with Christmas décor,” Spiteri says.
“It can give a piece a very primitive look or a very shabby look,” she says of the paint, which can be applied to wood, metal, glass or fabric. “You can do lots of different techniques with it,” she says. Spiteri is a decorative painter by trade and likes to find items at flea markets and garage sales and re-imagine them. “When I find a piece I already have an idea of what I want to change it into,” she says.

CASA - bringing hope back into a child’s life. By Sarah Gray Simply Hers Magazine
If Becky Spratt had her wish, there would be a CASA volunteer for every one of the 128 children who are wards of the Court in Hillsdale County.
“The volunteers are very hands on with the kids,” Spratt says. “They are there to go through all the changes with them learning about their story.”
As Executive Director of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children in Hillsdale County, Spratt works to train volunteers (Advocates) to be the eyes and ears for the children in the courtroom.
There is no educational requirement to be a CASA volunteer but those interested must be over the age of 21. Volunteers undergo a rigorous background check at the local, state and national level and 35 hours of training including training in the courtroom.
“The volunteers facilitate a need,” she says. “They get to know and understand the child and see that their needs are being met.” Established in 1977, CASA is the voice for abused and neglected children who have become wards of the Court. Hillsdale County began their program this past December after two CASA volunteers from surrounding counties saw the services were needed in Hillsdale. There are over 950 CASA programs nationwide, including 25 programs covering 26 counties in Michigan. CASA volunteers are trained citizens who are appointed by a Judge to represent the best interest of the abused or neglected child in court. The volunteers build strong relationships with the child, work with them at school and home and help them through this difficult time. Through regular contact the child learns there is someone who listens and cares – CASA volunteers. As their mission states: CASA of Hillsdale County “advocates for the best interest of abused and neglected children that are under the jurisdiction of Probate Court.”
72
CASA volunteers are appointed by the Judge when a child has been a victim of abuse or neglect and are now a ward of the Court. The volunteer works one-on-one with the child and help provide the judge with carefully researched information about the child to help the court make informed decisions about the child’s future.
“They are the voice of the child in the courtroom,” Spratt says of her volunteers. Currently Spratt is currently training three volunteers and hopes to have them ready to help children by Thanksgiving. “To give the kids something more to be thankful for,” she says. Spratt is currently a part-time Executive Director for CASA. Currently a full-time account manager of the Hillsdale Daily News, Spratt has an undergraduate degree in Business Administration and a Master’s in Organizational Leadership. When she saw this position available she knew it was the right fit for her. “I have always had a heart for children,” she says. Spratt has been speaking at other local non-profit organizations and service groups around the county to get the word out about becoming a CASA volunteer. She says she has been welcomed warmly by the community. “It is amazing how many people really care about children in Hillsdale County,” she says. For more information about CASA or to become a volunteer visit the CASA website at casaofhillsdalecounty.com or call 517-437-0990 ext 230.

9 simple steps
to a great relationship All of us are looking for that intangible feeling that is only there when we are completely content with where we are in a relationship. Unfortunately, many of us have not quite found it yet and maybe a little much needed advice is in order. So, here we go... nine simple steps that will help you take your relationship to a new level. In the Game of Life, Be Your Partner’s Biggest Fan A long term relationship isn’t about trying to make yourself happy. It is about the satisfaction you feel by overcoming the day to day challanges as a team. So when he calls you to tell you about something that happened at work, really listen to what he is saying. Cheer for the successes and be his biggest supporter when things are rough. That is what will make your love grow stronger. Ask Better Questions Don’t just ask “How was your day?”, he probably hears that from the girl who takes his order at lunch. Ask something that makes him realize that you really care about what he experienced like, “Did anything make you laugh today?”, or “Were you able to fix the problem you had yesterday?” Trust me, if he knows you are interested in him, he’ll be interested in you. Concentrate on the Friendship, Not the Romance. Passion is an important part of any relationship but it is not the most important part. Couples that remain deeply in love with each other are those who have a strong and undying friendship. Its the way they laugh at each others jokes, and forgive each others wrongdoings. The thing that makes an amazing best friend is what also makes an amazing partner. Don’t Fight To Win Fighting against each other is a complete waste of energy. Instead of fighting for him to say you are right, put your energy into resolving the situation. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter who is right or wrong, and 76
while we are on the subject, try not to keep score. I know how easy it is to remind him what he did to you in 1992 but instead of bringing it up ask yourself why you are keeping score. Seek to Understand If you’re having a hard time playing on the same team, stop fighting and instead, try to understand why your partner is upset. Typically, couples tend to redirect the frustration into something easier to complain about. For instance, it is not really about him leaving his clothes on the floor but rather because she is feeling unappreciated. Establish Trust Every Single Day Happy couples trust each other, and they have earned each other’s trust. That trust is built through actions, not words. It’s day after day after day of fidelity, service, emotional security, and reliability. Establish that foundation, and you’re in good shape. Create Fun Memories This is the icing on the cake. The couples who try on a daily basis to create fun memories, are the couples who shatter the perception of what was possible in a loving relationship. Just Be Nice To Each Other Seriously. Don’t be a jerk. Don’t call names. Don’t take jabs. Don’t try to hurt the other person. Your opinion matters to him. He has made himself vulnerable and allowed you know him in a way that gives you a toolbox full of emotional tools. Choose to use these tools to build him up, not to tear him down. I leave you with advice that I have given my children hundreds of times as they were growing up. They roll their eyes when they hear it now but it is sound advice and it is worth repeating often ...

Anthropologie Inspired Confetti Glasses
I fell in love with these glasses at Anthropolgie. They are colorful, fun and a great size. But $30? Paaalease. I don’t have that kind of money, but a few bucks into thrift store glasses and a package of paint pens...I am pretty darn happy with this equivalent.
Step- by-step Instructions Step 1: Place glasses upside down on a clean, dry working surface. Step 2: Dot Away....I would focus on one color. Let it set and dry for 2 minutes- you can even work on another glass, by the time I was done with 4 glasses, the first one was dry. Then you can choose another color and continue to dot away....
PROJECT: Anthropologie Inspired Confetti Glasses SKILL LEVEL: Beginner TIME: 1 Hour WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Step 3: Keep on Keepin’ on.....to get a “full” dotted look I did A LOT of them. I also switched from medium to fine pen widths for variety.
Glasses Paint Pens Oven
Step 4: For best results let them dry for an entire day then... To seal the paint put glasses in a cold oven and set it to 350 degrees and let them “cook” for 30 minutes, turn oven off and leave them in until it is cool then you can take them out. I recommend hand-washing these beauties

Caring for your Poinsettias The Aztecs grew poinsettias in Mexico for their homes and religious ceremonies long before Europeans came to Mexico. In the late 17th century, local priests incorporated the poinsettias into the Fiesta of Santa Pesebre nativity procession. They took the Aztec concept of poinsettias and blood sacrifice and changed it to represent the blood of Christ. Poinsettias originally bloomed naturally in October and signaled the coming of Christmas Botanists have bred poinsettias that bloom longer so that they are in bloom during the Christmas season. Many people get a poinsettia during the Christmas season but are unsure of how to care for it the rest of the year. Here are a few simple steps to ensure your plants long and healthy life. First, pick a poinsettia with no broken or yellowed leaves below the green ones. Starting off with a healthy plant makes everything easier. Poinsettias do well in homes. The modified bright colored parts of the plants are not leaves, but bracts that surround the small flower in the center of each group of bracts. These showy bracts will remain colorful until mid-March if the plant is well cared for. Poinsettias need at least six hours a day of indirect natural sunlight. Direct sunlight will fade the bracts. Poinsettias like things cool: 67 to 70 F during the day and 60 to 62F during the night. Cold will damage poinsettias very rapidly, so wrap them in a sleeve of paper when transporting them from the purchase place to your home if it is cold outside. Remove the sleeve of paper at once when reaching the plant’s destination or it will damage the bracts. Poinsettias like moist, well drained soil. Water them until water runs out the drainage hole of the pot but do not allow the plant to sit in water. Water whenever the soil is dry to the touch and discard the water that drains out. More poinsettias are killed by over watering than under watering, so be careful not to water too much. Do not fertilize poinsettias while they are in bloom. The rest of the year, fertilize once a month with a balanced water soluble fertilizer. This promotes green foliage and new growth. To get your poinsettia to rebloom, you will need to follow a few simple steps. After the bracts stop showing color, prune them and the flowers away. Repot the poinsettia into a new pot one size bigger than its original pot. Use a normal potting soil to plant it in. Mix in one teaspoon of treble phosphate (0-46-0) fertilizer in each gallon of potting soil. Use a normal slow release fertilizer on the surface of the soil.
88
Make sure that your plant gets as much sunlight as possible until the first of October. Then make sure it gets at least 14 hours of total darkness a night until the bracts grow and turn colors. This is usually around Thanksgiving. You can then give it normal light again.

Toys for Tots program Make it a special 2014 Christmas for the children.
Make a Difference The Marine Toys for Tots boxes will be going out to the Drop off location during October - November 2014 and will be out in the community through December 6, 2014. Local Toys for Tots Event — The Jonesville Fire Department along with the Michigan State Police are planning a toy drive at the WalMart parking lot in Jonesville, on December 6, 2014 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. We welcome you to come and donate a toy for a girl or boy in need. All toys collected in Hillsdale County will stay in Hillsdale County. Make it a special 2014 Christmas for the children. Local coordinating officer Cyndee Gochanour, you may contact her by phone at 517780-4580 or by email at gochanourc@michigan.gov.
U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program MISSION: The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. GOAL: The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of Toys for Tots are to help less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our
children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future. ACTIVITIES: The principal Toys for Tots activity which takes place each year is the collection and distribution of toys in the communities in which a Marine Corps Reserve Unit is located. In communities without a Reserve Unit, the campaign can be conducted by a Marine Corps League Detachment or group of men and women, generally veteran Marines, authorized by Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to conduct a local Toys for Tots campaign. Local Toys for Tots Campaign Coordinators conduct an array of activities throughout the year, which include golf tournaments, foot races, bicycle races and other voluntary events designed to increase interest in Toys for Tots, and concurrently generate toys and monetary donations.
