Over The River and Through The Woods...Safely!

R

emember when a seat belt was considered a momentous step toward passenger safety? Then the air bag added another layer and today Ford is taking safety to a whole new level. Take for instance the 2011 Ford Explorer The new Explorer will employ all of Ford’s standard safety features, as well as the latest and greatest innovations, including RSC, or Roll Stability Control which helps keep the Explorer from rolling over, while Curve Control keeps the vehicle moving in the intended direction. Also, BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) and Cross Traffic Alert help in lane changes and parking lots, respectively. Adaptive Cruise Control helps keep your distance while on the highway. All of this has been developed for the sole purpose of keeping both driver and passengers safe.

While it may have a car-like ride on-road, and be based on car and crossover DNA, the new Explorer is sure to keep you safe when the going gets tough. The intelligent 4WD system allows drivers to go places others simply can’t – namely mud, sand and deeper snow. A team led by Todd Brown of Ford Global Core Engineering, Brakes and Chassis Controls Department, developed the RSC system to reduce the occurrence of rollover accidents.

T

ypical electronic stability control systems are designed to control yaw or skidding only but by coupling the RSC and AdvanceTrac® systems Ford is able to provide even greater safety benefits for the customer.

“Ford is bringing to market tomorrow’s safety technology today,” Brown explains. “We’re very pleased to offer our customers the benefits of this new RSC technology, but Ford won’t stop here. Where customer safety is concerned, our commitment is to continuously develop and implement innovative solutions.” In Ford’s RSC system, a sensor is set to monitor the vehicle approximately 150 times per second. If the vehicle approaches an unstable situation, the vehicle’s RSC system is activated: engine power is reduced and/or the brakes are applied to one or more of the wheels as necessary to help regain vehicle stability.
