PUBLISHER’S NOTE Welcome to the 2nd Edition of Inside Jefferson Parish Magazine and our first Bridal Issue. Thanks for opening up the magazine. The Bridal Industry is huge in Jefferson Parish and responsible for Millions of Dollars in Sales and hundreds of jobs. Caterers, Venues/Halls, Restaurants, Bakers, Florists, Wedding Planners, Jewelers, Clothing Stores and other Retail Shops, Printers, Limo Companies, Photographers, Videographers and more are all involved in helping Brides and Grooms celebrate their special day. While there are many magazines and web sites to help Brides, Grooms and their families and friends, we thought there should be a resource guide for Jefferson Parish Brides and Grooms. Also, June is Father’s Day and we have a great Father’s Day Gift Guide to give you some ideas for your dad on his special day. Since it is the start of summer, we also have an article on Kid’s Stuff - Fun Things To Do For Kids to help keep them occupied and out of trouble. We’re also launching a new column, the IJP Profile, where we will spotlight a Jefferson Parish resident. This month we’re profiling Celeste Haar, also known as “The Metry Chick”. We think that the story behind Metry Chick and how Celeste developed the idea and brand is interesting and we hope you find it interesting and inspiring as well. We also take a look at some events around the Gulf Coast and Around Louisiana that you might want to check out. Hope you enjoy our 2nd Edition of Inside Jefferson Parish Magazine - The Monthly Magazine for Jefferson Parish. We’ll be back next month with features on Home Repair and Improvement, Health and Fitness, and more articles we hope you’ll enjoy in our July issue.

Something Old...

For Brides and Grooms, their wedding day can be a day of great joy and tremendous stress. And that’s just the wedding day. The hours and days of planning an event can be even more stressful. Who do you invite and how many? How many people can you afford? Who is paying for what? What do you serve? What kind of music should you play at the reception? Where do have the reception? Should you hire a wedding planner or do it yourself? There’s a lot that is involved in planning your special day. While there are dozens of Bridal Magazines and Web Sites, we wanted to focus on some ideas and suggestions specifically for Jefferson Parish Brides. Inside Jefferson Parish Magazine doesn’t have all the answers, but we can help you in planning your special day. PHOTOS BY STACY MARKS PHOTOGRAPHY

Do you want a fun wedding? A traditional wedding? Something in between? What are the average ages of your guests? How you choose your wedding entertainment will significantly impact the ambiance of your special day. G OING WITH A SOLO MUSICIAN GOING WITH A SOLO MUSICIAN For couples who prefer a more traditional sound to their wedding, you might consider a solo musician for your wedding entertainment. Depending on your personal tastes, a variety of instrumentation is available. Your choices might include an acoustic guitar, a cellist, a pianist, an organist, a violinist or a harpist. The type of instrument that you choose will have a large impact on the style and the mood of your wedding. For a classic Jefferson Parish wedding, a harpist will provide you with elegant music played on a beautiful instrument, thus creating the perfect atmosphere for you and your guests. If this sounds like what you’re looking for, you should consider harpist Ashley Toman, www.ashleytoman.com. Ashley has appeared with the Louisiana Philharmonic, the Baton Rouge Symphony, the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra, and the Rapides Symphony. She has played numerous wedding ceremonies and other events all

Jazz trios create a cool atmosphere and are more diverse than a soloist. Many can provide both mellow dinner jazz and dance-worthy jazz-funk. If you’re a jazz fan, the Jesse Boyd Trio is a wise choice, www.jesseboyd.com. The elegant sound of a jazz trio, flavored with a touch of Latin, a kiss of funk and a dash of blues, confirms the Jesse Boyd Trio has something for everyone. With a musical style that ranges from an accompanying melody to the conversational counterpart, one thing is dazzlingly apparent - the uniqueness of the Jesse Boyd Trio’s sound is marvelous. When I think about jazz, I think the late, great Norman Granz of Verve Records said it best, “Jazz is played and listened to by all people -- in harmony together.”

In Jefferson Parish, there are plenty of wedding bands from which to choose. A wedding favorite is No Idea Band, www.noideaband.com. Founded in 1994, this well-seasoned band will bring great attitudes and excellent music to your special day. There is nothing like the warmth and vibrancy of a live voice that a recording cannot convey. Troy Marks’ extremely wide vocal range allows No Idea to offer wide variety of hits from many different genres. SPINNING WITH WEDDING DJ’S PINNING WITH WEDDI NG D JS S

Some Jefferson Parish couples prefer a variety of music styles for their wedding entertainment. The advantage of a wedding DJ is that you can use a variety of different music styles, since everything is done electronically. Different DJs will have different styles, but if you are looking for one of the best, choose Mobile Music Unlimited, http:// mobilemusic.net. Far from the DJs of old, MMU is interactive and takes entertainment to new heights. From party-starter to dance instruction, MMU not only provides the music, they provide hula hoops, confetti launchers and feather boas, too, without taking the spotlight off you.

Music really does set the tone and spirit of your wedding and reception, so plan ahead, ask lots of questions, and most of all, listen carefully. 10

Bridal Travel •••••••••••••••••••••••••••• When it comes to Honeymoons, Jefferson Parish Brides and Grooms prefer the sun and fun of the Caribbean. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••• “It’s all about ease of travel and flight distances,” said Melinda Bourgeois of Travel Central (504-834-7000). “In the Caribbean, Jamaica and the Turks & Caicos Islands are very popular.” Janine Harmon from Harmony Adventures (504-836-6070) agreed and added, “The Sandals Resort on St. Lucia is extremely popular, and Cruises and Cancun have remained favorites.” Both Janine and Melinda noted the increasing popularity of couple’s marrying on cruise ships and then spending their honeymoon on ship. “Starting in November, 4 cruise ships will depart from New Orleans,” Melinda said. “You can get married on the ship in the early afternoon, your guests that aren’t staying on board can depart the ship, and you and your other guests can set sail later that day. It’s a combination Wedding and Honeymoon.” 12

The Bounce Spectrum

Kid s Stuff

Summer is for kids. More than any other season of the year, Kids rule summer. Whether it’s directing the family vacation, summer camps, athletics or outdoors, summer is made for kids.

The problem is finding interesting activities to keep your children engaged and out of trouble, without breaking the bank. With that in mind, here’s a list of activities in and around Jefferson Parish that you can do with your kids this summer or they can do to stay out of trouble and enjoy their summer vacation.

TAKE A DANCE CLASS - The summer might be a great opportunity for your child to learn some new steps. There are several area dance schools in Jefferson Parish with classes to fit any schedule and any budget.

BOUNCE - Kids love to bounce and judging by the amount of bouncing options there are in Jefferson Parish, kids here really love to bounce. Whether it’s taking your kids to businesses that specialize in bouncing like BooKoo Bounce (5644 Blessey St. in Elmwood), The Bounce Spectrum (4425 Napoleon in Metairie) or renting inflatables and having a neighborhood block party, bouncing is fun and safer than the trampolines that we had when we were kids.

PLAY LASER TAG - Laser Tag & Games has reopened in the old CompUSA building in Westgate Plaza near the Kenner/ Metairie line on Veterans (8855 Veterans - www.ltag.com). With their Summer Play Pass, you can play Laser Tag all afternoon for $22. If your kids aren’t worn out after playing Laser Tag all afternoon, they aren’t really human.

BooKoo Bounce

BE CREATIVE - Does your child like to paint or shown any interest in pottery? Do it yourself paint and pottery shops are plentiful in Jefferson Parish. Try Rembrandt All-You-Can-Art (5200 Veterans in Metairie), Posh Paint Pub (701 Metairie Road in Old Metairie), or Painting With A Twist (1900 Lafayette St, Ste 2-A in Gretna - make sure you call ahead first to find out when family day is being held).

GO TO A ZEPHYR’S GAME - Get outside and take your kids to theballpark. The Zephyrs are the AAA farm team of the Florida Marlins and they have 12 home games in June, 13 in July, and 18 in August so you have plenty of opportunities to eat peanuts and Cracker Jack at Zephyr Field and there are always plenty of great promotions at Zephyrs games too from Fireworks Friday to Dollar Dog Nights, the Zephyrs are a great value. Don’t forget about Kids Day on Sunday, June 12th. The first 500 kids get a voucher for a free kids meal, kids get to run the bases after the game and it’s Boudreaux’s Birthday. Get a free piece of birthday cake. What kind of cake do you feed a nutria on his birthday? For tickets or more information visit www.zephyrsbaseball.com.

Summer Solutions.... • KEEPING KIDS COOL • INSPIRING CREATIVITY • CAMP IDEAS SEND THEM TO CAMP - When I was a boy there were only two types of camps: sports camps or outdoor camps. Now there are camps for every interest for boys and girls. From cooking and music camps to chess camps, sports camps for every sport imaginable to dance and cheer camps and performing arts camps, if your child is interested in almost anything, there’s a camp for it somewhere. In addition to for-profit camps, many schools offer summer camps of varying lengths and topics and the Jefferson Parish Recreation Department has summer camps available as well for children ages 3-12. Call 349-5000, extension 134 for more details. PERFORM - The Jefferson Performing Arts Society (JPAS) has opportunities for Children to perform. The JPAS Youth Musical Theatre Program offers two sessions for two different age groups to perform in plays. Children entering the 3rd - 7th grades will be performing “Seussical” and those entering the 8th - 12th grades are performing “Guys & Dolls”. Unfortunately, “Seussical” sessions are full but to sign up for “Guys & Dolls” please visit www.jpas.org or call Lynne Lawrence Bordelon at 504-885-2000 ext. 211. HANG OUT AT A PARK - If you’re looking for something to do with your kids and you’re on a budget, there are parks throughout Jefferson Parish where you can take your kids and spend some quality time. Whether it’s a large park like Lafreniere or one of the smaller, neighborhood parks, you can easily pack a picnic lunch, spread out a blanket, and toss or kick a ball around with your kids or just relax and enjoy nature. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle and traffic, take a drive to Grand Isle. The beaches are open and the businesses will appreciate you stopping by. GO CAMPING - Who needs a hotel when you can rent a cabin in a state park or just pitch your tent and cook over an open fire? The Bayou Segnette State Park on the West Bank offers “Improved Camp Sites”. An “Improved” site includes a site with electricity, water, a tent pad, a picnic table, a grill and the all important comfort station. There’s also a wave pool so you can cool off. Improved camp sites cost $26 per night from April - September but, when you consider what a night in a hotel costs, camping is an affordable back-to-nature getaway.

Celeste Haar; Always A Metry Chick” If you go online, go to craft fairs or if you don’t live in a cave, you’ve heard or seen the term “Metry Chick”. If you were wondering, Celeste Haar is THE “Metry Chick”. How did this wife and mother of 2 take a hobby and turn it into a thriving business and a brand? Starting out as a way to give her family and friends some special Christmas presents, Celeste has turned her ideas and talent into a business through hard work, determination and her tremendous spirit. “The truth is, I needed some Christmas presents. I saw some etched glasses in a store and I thought, I could do that. My first attempts were ugly but I got better. I would etch anything and just give it away.”

20

INSIDE JEFFERSON PARISH

As she got better, Celeste started branching out, little by little. “I started offering items at auctions and I saw that people were buying my items and paying “real money” for them. After the auctions ended, people were contacting me to buy things and custom order items. That’s when I realized that I could do this.” Celeste started etching even more and building up her inventory. The next step was craft shows. She did 80 shows in 2010. “I love shows. I love meeting people and talking to people. There’s something special about seeing a buyer’s face when they pick something up and they “get it”. I’ve met some wonderful people at shows.” In addition to craft shows, Celeste’s line of items is also available online at www.metrychick.com. “Building a web site is a lot less expensive than a storefront and advertising. I had a basic knowledge of web design and built on it. I knew having a web site, having a Facebook page, and getting involved in social media was important.” MetryChick has over 1,200 “Likes” on Facebook. “Facebook is like a chain reaction. Facebook is not intimidating, there’s no pressure to make a commitment. You can ‘Like’ a page and check it out without the need to make a purchase.” In addition to Facebook, Celeste is also a huge believer in Twitter and has over 500 Twitter followers. “I’ve met friends all over the city and across the country. Twitter and Facebook have helped me grow my business.”

The business came before the name but, “I was always a Metry Chick,” Celeste said. “I live about 2 miles away from where I grew up and I’m a lifelong Metairie resident. I love New Orleans, but I am a Metry Chick.” In June of 2010, Celeste turned her craft into a full-time business. “I’m always thinking, always searching for the next item: Photos, glass. I want to take it one step further.” “I probably work harder now than I ever did working for someone else.” She’s added new lines like “N’awlins NOstaLgiA”, a line of items that bring back the New Orleans of yesteryear and is also working on custom lines or photos and charms. “What can I create just for you?” The photo charms are an increasingly popular item. “After Katrina, I think New Orleans people realized how important it is to keep your photos with you.” Celeste can produce individual or quantity pieces for you, your friends and family or business associates. Find out more about Celeste and MetryChick by visiting her web site at www.MetryChick.com.

Jefferson Parish Barbecue Joints Barbecue restaurants in Louisiana have always had a difficult time. Not because their food or service weren’t good, but because Louisianans are outdoor people. Everyone has their own barbecue grill, pit or smoker, and many have all three and they get used year round.

Barbecue is about taste and every region of the country does things a little differently.

Bar-B-Que. There really is something for every Barbecue lover - you just have to know where to look.

This Barbecue institution has been serving their style of barbecue for longer than anyone can remember. Featuring pulled pork, beef brisket and ribs, Texas Bar-B-Que Company offers plates and sandwiches (buns and po-boys) and also fried seafood. You can eat there or get it to go. You can also buy bulk meat to feed a crowd or a hungry family. Texas Bar-B-Que Company serves up the standard sides (Baked Beans, Potato Salad, and Cole Slaw). Fans rave about the Cole Slaw at Texas Bar-B-Que Company. The food at Texas Bar-B-Que Company is always top quality. Texas Bar-B-Que Company serves their Bar-B-Que with a sauce that is slightly sweeter than other Bar-B-Que restaurants but also very tangy.

Whether it’s North Carolina barbecue with it’s vinegary sauce, Memphis barbecue with it’s dry rub, Alabama barbecue with it’s sweet tomato-based sauce, or Texas barbecue with it’s several different regional flavors, Barbecue isn’t really defined and everyone has their own taste. Because of those factors, there are only a handful of Barbecue restaurants in Jefferson Parish. Ironically, two of them (Texas Bar-B-Que Company and Corky’s) are across the street from each other and while both serve Pork, Beef and Ribs, they each serve different styles of 22

Corky’s is a local franchise of the World Famous Corky’s Restaurant in Memphis. Corky’s features wet or dry ribs, pulled pork and beef brisket. Corky’s also offers some culinary twists like a BBQ Salad, a Southern Style Salad with chunks of Fried Chicken and Spaghetti with Pork or Beef. This location opened in October 1992 and has been serving great Bar-B-Que ever since. According to VP/COO Alan Diamond, it’s the quality of meat and ingredients that makes Corky’s different. “Also, our Memphis-style BBQ sauce is unique because it

VooDoo opened up it’s first location in New Orleans in 2002 and now has locations across Louisiana all serving up the same great slow smoked meat and fabulous side dishes. In fact, some of VooDoo’s meats are smoked for up to 18 hours in a mixture of Pecan and Oak.

Corky’s also offers Red Beans & Rice on Monday and serves up a mean Onion Loaf. If you’re really adventurous, as in more adventurous than me, try the BBQ Pork Nachos, I know people who rave about them, or the BBQ Spaghetti. Me, I stick with the Pulled Pork and the Onion Loaf. Corky’s does off-site catering with a minimum of 50 guests and no maximum. “A few years ago we catered the Red Dress Run in New Orleans. That was about 8,000 people,” Diamond said.

VooDoo features pulled pork and brisket and St. LouisStyle (dry rubed) Ribs. VooDoo also offers sandwiches, po-boys, salads, chicken, seafood, burgers and loaded baked potatoes. VooDoo offers the regular array of side items but includes unique items like Gris Gris Greens, Corn Pudding and a Sweet Potato Souffle. VooDoo offers meat by the pound, Party Packs and does catering for your next event.

Shane’s Rib Shack

Hillbilly Bar-B-Que

Our only West Bank entrant is also one of our newest entrants. Shane’s Rib Shack is part of a chain of restaurants located throughout the Southeast and now branching out into other areas of the country.

Hillbilly Bar-B-Que takes a different spin on Bar-B-Que featuring Kentucky style Hickory smoked meats. Hillbilly serves their Bar-B-Que without sauce added so you can enjoy the Hickory smoked flavor or add one of two sauces offered.

Hillbilly serves sandwiches and plates of Pork and Brisket and plates of Chicken and Ribs. They also offer a “Hawg Dawg, two sliced beef weiners on a bun. Sides include some of the best potato salad you will find in Jefferson Parish and a cold corn salad that is also worth a try. Shane’s features large portions of pork, chicken and ribs and also features sandwiches, chicken tenders and wings. For sides, Shane’s features traditional Southern fare like collard greens, fried okra, mac-n-cheese and something not normally found in Louisiana restaurants, Brunswick Stew - bar-b-que pork, creamed corn, peppers and onions all served with a tangy sauce.

You can also purchase Brisket, Pork Ribs or Rib Tips by the pound and whole or ½ smoked chickens. Call ahead and they’ll have your order ready for takeout or you can dine there.

Your Children, Soft Drinks, Tooth Decay and Osteoporosis Do you know??? -- that soft drinks can seriously harm your child’s health? Two-year-olds consume more sugar through soft drinks than cookies, ice cream and candy combined. Soft drinks are sold in 60% of American public middle and high schools. Some American school systems receive money in exchange for giving soft drink distributors exclusive rights to place soft drink vending machines on school property, and the right to increase students’ exposure to the beverages. In central Michigan, 34 school districts received a total of $37 million over a seven year contract. Soft drinks are replacing milk in the diets of growing children. Only one in five teenagers meets the current recommended consumption of milk for healthy bones. LOOK AT THESE STUDIES: 1. A federally funded study of 3200 American children and young adults 9 to 29 years of age showed a direct link between soft drinks and tooth decay. The sugar contributes to decay, and the acid in the soft drinks etches the enamel, damaging it and increasing the speed and depth of decay. 2. Animal studies have shown that phosphorous, common in soft drinks, depletes the bones of calcium. 3. A Harvard study found that girls who drink more soft drinks are more prone to broken bones. The girls who drank soft drinks were five times more likely to suffer bone fractures than those who didn’t. You can reduce your child’s risk of decay and broken bones - Increase milk drinking for your children and decrease soft drinks! Information sources: 1. Journal of Pediatric Dentistry, article by Robert F. Majewski. May-June 2001. Pp. 198-203 2. Atlanta Journal Constitution. April 3, 2001.

To round out the month, visit the Lacombe Crab Festival (June 25-June 26) on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. This festival guarantees to be a weekend of much fun and pure pleasure. Walk the streets with local artists selling their original pieces and visit the Cultural Village. Celebrate many genres of music such as gospel, jazz, rock, country, zydeco, and the blues. Enjoy all of the carnival rides and friendly folks under the majestic oaks at John Davis Park. Visit www.lacombecrabfest.org for more inforrmation.
