Connections in the Community Ease Transition for New Air Commandos Stepping into new surroundings while far away from home can be a stressful experience. The Adopt an Air Commando program is designed to connect Airmen with local families to help ease that transition and enhance their experience while in New Mexico. The program focuses on meeting two needs for Cannon Airmen and their families: establishing a healthy identity within the community and fostering a stronger bond within the surrounding areas. The program helps Airmen experience New Mexico in a whole new light while establishing connections and fostering new friendships. “Adopt an Air Commando allows community partners and military personnel (and their families) the opportunity to share their commonalities, personal experience, and lives which provides both set of participants an outlet to learn from and integrate into the respective communities,” said TaShara Duckett, A&FRC Volunteer Resource Manager. “The program objectives are to increase morale, strengthen local community connections and provide support to families and single Airmen assigned to Cannon Air Force Base.” This program falls within the scope of community outreach to assist Airmen on ways to identify similarities as well as opportunities to assimilate and be more accepting of the community while

broadening their definition of “home,” “comfort,” and “fun.” “Adopt an Air Commando strives to be that beacon of hope for those that feel out of their comfort zone here in Eastern New Mexico,” Ms. Duckett said. “Adopt an Air Commando offers an outlet to see, interact, and participate in activities that are enjoyable in unfamiliar area or provide military participants with a home away from home in some cases.” The expectations of the program are to help individuals realize the simplistic beauty and discover the endless possibilities of personal and professional growth in the surrounding areas of the Western home of the Air Commando. Participation in this program is voluntary but ongoing and requires registration with the Airman and Family Readiness Center. Together, the A&FRC and Chamber of Commerce plan quarterly events to help support and sustain this fun program. Leonard Marchman, Auto Skills Manager

Q.

How important are AWD and 4X4 in the snow this winter?

A. This is a difficult question to answer because it depends on the terrain and weather where you are traveling or where you live.

Historically, New Mexico is known for mild winters compared to other parts of the country. So, if you are planning on driving in and around New Mexico this winter you should be fine without these features. When concerned about driving in the snow, its really wise to check the road conditions for the places you will be driving to this winter season. It really doesn’t matter if you have AWD or a 4X4 vehicle if there is a layer of ice under the snow or black ice. The road advisory hotline is (800) 432-4269 for road conditions for New Mexico and surrounding states. Vehicles with 4x4 and AWD options can provide you with better handling and control in adverse conditions. But, remember, the tires and suspension need to be in good shape for safe driving.
