EMMANUEL COLLEGE Department of Nursing Guidelines for the Health Promotion Clinical Practicum Preceptor Guidelines The Nurse/Preceptor will: Meet with the student on the first clinical day to explore mutual expectations for the clinical experience and to review objectives for the specific clinical experience. Orient the student to the agency and appropriate policies, and to the standard of clinical practice unique to the specific setting. Assist the student with communication within the agency when necessary. When necessary, supervise the student in new experiences that are in keeping with the agency/college policies. Be alert to new experiences that would be beneficial to the student and facilitate these experiences. Discuss with the student the range of responsibilities that comprise the professional nurse’s role, such as participatory management, quality assurance, ethical and legal implications of practice, current nursing research within the agency, nursing leadership roles, and patient and/or staff education activities. Maintain communication with the faculty for input and feedback regarding the student’s progress. This includes availability for at least one meeting with faculty members during the clinical semester. Review progress with student on a weekly basis. Establish with supervisory personnel, faculty and student a contingency plan in case of preceptor absence. Summarize the student’s experience at the end of the clinical experience. Meet with the student to discuss progress in the fulfillment of clinical objectives.
