EMMANUEL COLLEGE Department of Nursing Guidelines for the Health Promotion Clinical Practicum Preceptor Guidelines The Nurse/Preceptor will: Meet with the student on the first clinical day to explore mutual expectations for the clinical experience and to review objectives for the specific clinical experience. Orient the student to the agency and appropriate policies, and to the standard of clinical practice unique to the specific setting. Assist the student with communication within the agency when necessary. When necessary, supervise the student in new experiences that are in keeping with the agency/college policies. Be alert to new experiences that would be beneficial to the student and facilitate these experiences. Discuss with the student the range of responsibilities that comprise the professional nurse’s role, such as participatory management, quality assurance, ethical and legal implications of practice, current nursing research within the agency, nursing leadership roles, and patient and/or staff education activities. Maintain communication with the faculty for input and feedback regarding the student’s progress. This includes availability for at least one meeting with faculty members during the clinical semester. Review progress with student on a weekly basis. Establish with supervisory personnel, faculty and student a contingency plan in case of preceptor absence. Summarize the student’s experience at the end of the clinical experience. Meet with the student to discuss progress in the fulfillment of clinical objectives.
Guidelines for the Health Promotion Clinical Practicum Student Guidelines The student will: Follow the Emmanuel College Guidelines for the health promotion clinical practicum. Collaborate with faculty to develop personal learning objectives for clinical experience. Participate in an orientation to the agency, unit, policies, and procedures where appropriate. Actively participate in the clinical experience through co-assignment with the nurse/preceptor. Identify own learning needs and seek supervision in unfamiliar situations. Provide nursing care in accordance with the AACN’s “The Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice”, the ANA’s “Standards of Nursing Practice”, and CDC, HIPAA and OSHA guidelines, and agency policies and procedures. Discuss with the nurse/preceptor the range of responsibilities that encompass her/his role. Plan a weekly conference with the nurse/preceptor to discuss progress toward attainment of clinical objectives. Collaborate with the clinical faculty for guidance and consultation. Prepare and submit all required clinical assignments as identified on the course syllabus and the course requirement sheet. Comply with attendance requirements as identified. Participate actively in the bi-weekly clinical seminar. Write and submit a clinical log weekly. Complete Learning Contract prior to meeting with Clinical Faculty for final clinical evaluation conference.
Guidelines for the Health Promotion Clinical Practicum Faculty Guidelines The faculty will: Interface with the appropriate agency representative to identify specific departments/units that would serve as appropriate settings for student clinical experiences. Setting should demonstrate the following: a) b) c) d)
strong clinical nursing practice, availability for student placement in varied experiences within the facility, support for the development of preceptor(s) among staff, and commitment to education.
Review student’s identified area of clinical interest and related learning goals for the clinical experience and identify suitable clinical settings. Copies of the individual student objectives will be provided to the appropriate agency representative(s) including the nurse preceptor. Communicate with the appropriate agency representative/nurse preceptor regarding the specifics of the clinical experience. Provide the nurse agency representative/nurse preceptor with copies of course materials for the clinical practicum. Meet with the identified nurse/preceptor at least one time during the semester to discuss both the preceptor experience and the student’s progress in meeting clinical objectives and to summarize the overall clinical experience. Maintain on-site clinical visits appropriate for the learning needs of the RN student. Meet with the student(s) on a bi-weekly basis to ensure student progress and attainment of clinical objectives. This will be accomplished via a bi-weekly clinical seminar. Meet with the student(s) for a final evaluation conference to assess the student’s progress in achieving the clinical course and individual objectives. Nurse/preceptor input will be included in this evaluation. Meet with the chairperson of the Department of Nursing of the College throughout the semester to verbally share relevant student issues, agency issues, and overall practicum progress. Complete the Department of Nursing clinical agency summary forms at the conclusion of the semester.
