The Resident Assistant Application 2013 General Description of Position: At Emmanuel College, the Resident Assistant (RA) position is one of leadership and service. The Office of Residence Life and Housing selects and trains students to serve as paraprofessional staff in all residence areas.
Residence Life and Housing Mission Statement: The Office of Residence Life and Housing provides clean, well maintained and properly staffed facilities, which promote a living and learning environment that is safe, just, and developmental. The staff offers students opportunities to explore new experiences, enhance personal growth, explore and building new relationships, and play an active role in celebrating and promoting the ideals of a Catholic community.
Residence Life and Housing Goals:
To develop a comprehensive program that addresses issues of wellness (alcohol, drugs, healthy relationships, fitness and nutrition) as they relate to our student body. Continue to create and develop leadership opportunities for our students. Provide a programming model that addresses the needs of our residential population. Communicate our policies and procedures to students and families so that they have a clear understanding of the community in which they live.
The RA Role and Responsibilities: The following list below outlines the core responsibilities the RA Selection Team will be looking for in a successful RA candidate. These core responsibilities should be shown throughout both the written and oral aspects of the RA Selection Process. A. Peer Counseling: building community, conflict mediation, crisis intervention, accessibility, approachability, relationship with residents. B. Administration: bulletin boards, promptness, accuracy, communication with supervisor, meeting attendance, duty responsibilities. C. Programming: meeting deadlines, efforts over a desirable range of topic areas, paperwork completed in efficient and timely manner, show's enthusiasm for self and other's programming. D. Community Standards: confronting negative behavior, documentation, modeling positive behavior, enforcing policies, demonstrating awareness, shows support for College policies. E. Team Member: participation/attendance at staff in-services, working cooperatively with staff, supporting building staff activities. F. Attitude: approaches position with enthusiasm, enthusiastic staff member, and shows genuine concern for hall residents.
Qualifications: The following provisions are placed on those hired for the Resident Assistant position through the Office of Residence Life and Housing at Emmanuel College.
Must maintain and have a current 2.50 cumulative grade point average. A clear judicial record, i.e., must not be on disciplinary probation and must maintain this status throughout the employment period.
Lived on-campus for at least 1 complete semester while at Emmanuel College. RA will live on-campus during the dates of their contract. RA cannot work more than 20 hours per week beyond the RA job. Any employment, student teaching, internship, or other major responsibilities taking the RA out of the residence hall must first be discussed with the ADRD, and approved by the Director of Residence Life. RA cannot hold any position on Residence Hall Association (RHA) and/or Student Government Association (SGA) other than general member. RA cannot carry more than 18 hours of coursework or more than one evening class per semester unless he/she receives prior permission from the AD/RD. RAs may be asked to drop classes in excess of the 18-hour limit. An RA is hired for the complete academic year (August through May). RAs are not allowed to leave for break periods until the residence halls are closed.
For First Year RAs: 75% of room and board. All RAs are assigned to single rooms at the double room rate. Please note that the compensation package for the RA position is considered financial aid and may affect your financial aid package.

monday, nov. 13th ra applications are available. wednesday, nov. 28th – ra info session – library lecture hall – 8pm monday, dec. 3rd – ra applications due for students going abroad. dec. 3rd - 7th: interview process will be held for those studying abroad. (business attire) thursday, december 6th study abroad students ra group process. (business attire) tuesday, january 22nd: second info session is held – activities period. wednesday, january 23rd: ra applications are due at 4:30pm. sunday, january 27th: ra group process day – library lecture hall - 1pm. (business attire) january 30th – february 8th: ra interviews are held. (business attire) friday, feb. 15th ra offer letters go out. friday, march 3rd ra contracts are due at 4:30p tuesday, april 2nd ra town hall meeting.
Steps to Successfully Completing the Resident Assistant Application:
Carefully read the general information page and the position description. When responding to the essay questions and other areas of the process, you will have a better understanding of your responsibilities and obligations as a RA and what we are looking for in a successful candidate. Remove the Application Form and type or print in ink the information requested on the front of the application form. In the format of a cover letter, please provide a response to the essays questions. Prepare and submit a professional resume. Please attach (2) sealed and signed references in an envelope and provide the name and current contact information for (1) other professional reference. Sign and date the application form. Return the application and supplemental materials to the Office of Residence Life and Housing Office – no later than 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23, 2012. ****Please note if you are studying abroad Spring 2012 you will follow the timeline listed above. *** Sign-up for an interview timeslot in the Office of Residence Life and Housing beginning Jan. 21th. References: Please attach (2) sealed and signed references in an envelope to your application indicating based off the outlined RA roles and responsibilities why they think you fit the RA role: 1 reference must be from a current RA at Emmanuel College, & 1 reference from a current Emmanuel College faculty or staff member, or 1 professional reference from your most recent employer. Appropriate references may include a former employer, volunteer experience supervisor, or other work/performance-related reference. Please do not list friends & family members as references.
