Teen’s first car, what to look for Many parents contribute money toward the purchase of their teenagers’ first car. But even those who don’t help kids finance the purchase of their first vehicle may still want to offer some advice as their teens start to look for the car they will no doubt remember for the rest of their lives.

Different drivers need different things out of their vehicles, so a car that might be perfect for adults will not necessarily be the best fit for teen drivers without much experience traversing the nation’s roadways. The following are a few factors to consider when helping teens find their first car.

Size Teenagers have little to no

experience behind the wheel, so it’s best that they not drive cars that are especially small or large right away. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, young drivers between the ages of 16 and 17 are significantly overrepresented in fatal crashes. The NHTSA suggests such drivers’ immaturity and inexperience plays a significant role in that overrepresentation. So parents likely do not want their children in the smallest car possible, as such vehicles may not protect teens as adequately as slightly larger vehicles in the case of an accident. In addition, very large cars, such as pickup trucks or SUVs, can be difficult to control and are best suited to older drivers who already have years of driving experience

under their belts. A mid-size sedan is big enough to protect teens and their passengers in the case of an accident, and such vehicles are small enough to handle easily.

Passenger capacity Another factor to consider when shopping for cars for teenagers is passenger capacity.

The more seats there are in a car, the more friends teens can pack into their vehicles.

recommendations for area drivers Summer is coming! It’s time to check the running condition of your cars and trucks not only for everyday wear and tear caused by heat during daily commutes, but to get ready for vacation road trips. Summer heat can be harsh and damage tires, cooling systems, batteries, belts and hoses especially during high temperatures. To be secure in your vehicle these components should be checked from time to time during the summer to help avoid breakdowns and car problems that can leave you stranded.

Barry Dickey, owner of PRO TOY Automotive Service Center, serving the Knoxville area since September 2001, said, “My advice is the first thing for the owner to do is check the vehicle owner’s manual for prescribed services and scheduled maintenance. My approach regarding automotive maintenance may be a little different than others, but if vehicles aren’t properly maintained there could be issues and owners won’t be able to get to the performance and dependability they are looking for.”

Maintenance program technology for maintaining vehicles and keeping them in excellent running condition has changed with the times. Today highly sophisticated ignition and fuel systems are the norm and onboard computers control critical functions of the vehicle. General maintenance programs for newer vehicles have changed in recent years, but owners still need to be concerned about summer conditions that can cause unexpected damage.

Dickey advises that air filters be inspected and generally changed every 20,000 to 30,000 miles depending on the manufacturer’s specifications and environmental exposure. Cabin air filters will keep pollen and other airborne debris from air conditioning systems while engine air filters protect the engine intake system.

“In the summer, conditions can become very dusty and clog engine and cabin air filters. This can cause a decreased performance in the vehicle fuel mileage and performance as well in the cabin cooling systems,“ he said.

As the summer progresses drivers should be aware that all fluid levels need to be checked and changed if necessary. “Antifreeze/coolant levels should be checked. This is particularly critical when the weather is hot. It can cause stress on engines,” Dickey said.

Belts, hoses and mounts should be checked for cracks or frays.

“Belts and hoses can become dry and brittle. If a belt breaks while on the road people can lose time and money to have the vehicle towed to a repair shop,” cautioned Dickey.

“Tires should be checked for proper inflation. Tire air pressure is important in summer. The hotter it gets the more tires expand and this can cause tires to wear abnormally. It’s best to check air pressure when tires are cool,” said Dickey, suggesting owners follow the manufacturer’s recommendation found on the driver’s door jam. He said tires should be rotated every 5,000 to 7,500 miles

and balanced when vibrations are felt at highway speeds. Pot holes are unfriendly to East Tennessee drivers and shocks and struts should be inspected for wear and leaks.

Dickey recommends drivers check wiper blades and be sure they are in good condition in case

of a summer pop-up storm. He also suggests that a “Just in Case” emergency road kit be kept in the vehicle. It should contain jumper cables, flashlight, emergency flat tire repair, wrenches, screwdrivers, and a first-aid kit, distilled water for the radiator and drinking water for occupants.

“Vehicle owners should become familiar with their vehicles and the owner manual so they are familiar with how it should operate. In addition they should know the manufacturer’s recommendations for maintenance and work with a reputable repair center,” emphasized Dickey.

Matlock Tire Tips for Spring on the Road Before you take that road trip, get those tires inspected.

“Rubber and plastics degrade due to exposure to ozone, chemicals, age and heat,”, said Tim Williams, Director of Purchasing and Special Projects for Matlock Tire Service & Auto Repair.

“Summer heat can cause rubber composition to change. It doesn’t melt necessarily, but if it gets hot enough, the rubber starts breaking down and breaks apart,” he added.

Another factor of tire degradation is the composition of today’s tires. Tires now have

more plastic in their molecular structure than before and the plastic can show more rapid wear. Age, in conjunction with spring and summer heat, can degrade the tires faster.

“All tires have a DOT serial number on them. It is stamped on the tire. That will disclose the age of the tire.

“When tires get five or six years old ... it’s important to get them off your car,” Williams said. "People living in places such as Florida are advised to replace tires after four years."

Williams suggests people

He also recommends people check for under-inflated tires, which can cause the rubber to degrade faster.

How to safely navigate wet roadways Spring showers certainly may bring flower laters on, but they also contribute to challenging driving conditions. Early spring weather can be fickle, vacillating between dry, wet and even icy conditions. Drivers need to remain on their toes to safely traverse roadways near and far.

Wet roadways and poor driving conditions contribute to thousands of road accidents each and every year. As roads get wet, oil and other substances rise to the surface of the pavement, which can quickly become slippery and compromise the traction offered by tires. According to the United States Department of

Transportation, there are around 707,000 automobile crashes each year due to rain.

Heavy rains also may lead to puddles, which can obscure hazards on the roadway. Cars may stall out in puddles or hydroplane, which occurs when cars coast along the surface of the water. Puddles also can be splashed by oncoming cars, leading to visibility issues.

It is in every driver’s best interest to use caution when driving on wet roads. The following tips can help prevent accidents, injuries and even fatalities during the rainy season.

• Slow down. Drivers should

drive slower when roads are wet and when rain compromises visibility. It can take up to three times longer to stop on a wet road than a dry one. By slowing down you will be able to stop or veer out of the way of danger.

• Leave room. When driving on wet roads, leave more room between your vehicle and the one in front of you. Again, this plays into stopping distance. Tailgating increases your risk of rear-ending a vehicle if you cannot stop in time on a wet roadway.

• Stay alert. It can be easy to be lulled into complacency while driving. But staying alert and conscious of every detail going on

around you can reduce your risk of accident when driving in less than ideal conditions.

• Skip cruise control. As a driver, you want to remain in control of acceleration and speed, rather than leaving it up to the cruise control system. If you begin to hydroplane on cruise control, the car may actually speed up.

• Use your headlights.

Headlights can light up the road in front of you, helping illuminate potential hazards. Lights on a car also make your vehicle more visible to others on the road. Always turn on the headlights in inclement weather.

• Avoid jerky movements. Keep

a steady pace and the vehicle in control. Jerking the wheel or accelerating and braking in a erratic fashion can cause the vehicle to spin out or skid on wet roads.

• Check your tires. Inspect your tires for tread wear and air pressure. Tires should be rotated as part of routine maintenance.

Poorly performing tires are a significant safety risk. If you live in an area known for a lot of rain, invest in tires designed for wet road conditions.

How to change a flat tire

Many drivers will experience a flat tire at some point in their lives. Flat tires can be a nuisance, especially if a flat leaves you stranded on the side of an empty road with little opportunity for passing traffic to help you.

Knowing how to change your own tire can keep you from sitting on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck or fellow motorist.

There is no need to feel helpless when your vehicle gets a flat tire. Changing a flat tire is relatively easy and can take just a few minutes if you are prepared and know how to get the job done.

1. Turn on your emergency flashing hazard lights and pull the car safely over to the side of the road where you will not be in the path of traffic.

2. Try to find a level, stable sur face so that the car will not roll.

3. Put the car in park and engage the emergency brake.

Place bricks or wooden blocks under the tires on the opposite side to prevent the car from rolling.

4. If you have cones or flares, use them to make your vehicle more visible to fellow motorists. This can save you
