Congratulations to the cast of High School Musical JR. and the Performing Arts team for putting on such a wonderful show last week. Congratulations also to our Under 13 and Under 15 football teams whose winning streak continues. Lastly, thank you to parents who attended Year 7 Parents Evening last night. “We’re all in this together” ...

39 GCSE Spanish students travelled to Málaga for a four day immersive cultural experience this week. Students had the opportunity to explore the rich history of Málaga whilst enhancing their language skills. Highlights included a visit to the iconic Alhambra Palace in Granada, where students discovered the region's historical significance. As well as experiencing Spanish cuisine and exploring key attractions in both cities, they enjoyed a flamenco class, visited a Spanish school and the enjoyed some downtime at the beach. Thank you to Mr Graham, Miss Dean, Miss McIlroy and Miss Muirhead for accompanying the group. ¡Viva España!

Year 9 students attended an extracurricular art club this term, working hard to produce work for the dot-art schools competition. Their work has been judged by a panel and the top three from our school chosen for a public vote. The artwork with the most votes will win a place in the exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery later this year. Congratulations to Lucy Chapman (Year 12) who won the photography competition on the recent Art trip to Venice!

Year 9 students enjoyed a day at Liverpool College ran by Thriving Minds. The group attended two lectures on Aristotle and Nanotechnology by a leading University of Oxford lecturer and engaged in debates with other students from schools across the North West on whether they believed ‘Custom was King' based on the work of Herodotus. Well done to Casey Malone who stood up in front of 200 students and staff and made an excellent addition to the debate over whether animals should have rights!

Year 10 students engaged proactively in a Personal Development Day which included important messages shared by EFC and Brook. Students interacted really well with high energy motivational speaker Calvin, from Loudspeaker, and took part in essential first aid training.

We are looking for readers from all year groups to read some of the shortlisted books chosen by UKLA (UK Literacy Association) judges for this year’s book award. There are story books and fact books to choose from, and you won’t be expected to read them all! If you are interested, please call in and see Miss Grainger in the LRC to get your book(s).

As part of their Geography studies, 200 Year 7 students visited Chester Zoo. They enjoyed a workshop in the Tropical Realm, where they studied animals in the rainforest and how ecologists and conservationists track animals in the wild in order to conduct research into their population and behaviour. Students spent the rest of the day exploring the zoo - the endangered snow leopard, Fruit Bat Forest, Butterfly House and Lazy River Boat Trip were firm favourites!

Historians from the KS3 History Club have completed a project themed around "Inspirational Women in History.” The students worked hard designing presentations and posters about historical figures including Queen Elizabeth II, Harriet Tubman, Princess Diana, Boudicca and Emily Davison. Well done to the students involved, they have worked so hard!

Our Student Senior Leadership Team presented Phil Crawford, Community and Fundraiser Coordinator for Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge Hospitals, with a cheque for over £10,000 - the grand total of funds raised during Pink Week over the last 5 years!

Well done to English teacher, Miss Briggs on completing the Liverpool Half Marathon and raising money for Claire House.

Well done to Marcel Carr (Year 12) and 13RP who won the Sixth Form Easter bonnet parade!

Our U13 footballers beat Woodchurch 11-0 last week in the Merseyside Cup! 5 goals from Jessie Kilbane (Year 8), 4 from Millie McLean (Year 8) and 2 from Ace Ison (Year 8) on her debut secured them a place in the semi-final. A fantastic team effort!

Last Tuesday Ayaz Bhuta, MBE and gold medal Paralympian, visited us to give an inspirational talk to our Sports Leaders and students from Clare Mount College and South Wirral High School. We also welcomed alumna Grace Foster to talk about her journey of resilience and reward during her time at school. The afternoon culminated in the leaders working together to practice unified sports and experience a session of wheelchair rugby, which they thoroughly enjoyed.

Well done to our Year 12 Sports Leaders who led a Year 8 football lesson this week.

Well done to Year 1 Sport students for a fantastic grades in t examinations! Than Ella Williams (Year 1 supporting our Netball training sessions this term as part of her BTEC Sport coursework.

Last Wednesday, Year 12 students Liv Carney, Izzy Prescott and Eleri Thomas were interviewed by members of Wallasey Rotary Club for a place on the RYLA summer residential in the Brecon Beacons. The rotarians were very impressed by all three candidates. Well done to Izzy and Eleri who secured places and Liv who will be a reserve. The Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) residential is an intensive and challenging experience for young people to develop their skills as a leader whilst having fun and making connections.

Weatherhead 6th Form 3-3 Birkenhead Sixth Form College

We were delighted to welcome alumna Dr Nancy Evans to Weatherhead last week. A lecturer and course leader for Sociology at the University of Chester, she spoke to Year 12 Sociology students about studying a degree in Sociology and university life.

Sociology and Psychology students attended a talk given by criminal barrister Martine Snowdon from Exchange Chambers. Her experiences with a number of criminal cases were extremely insightful and students learnt more about the crime and forensic aspects of their GCSE and A Level courses, and the possible career pathways that these subjects offer.

Year 10 students visited New Brighton as part of HYPE’s Vibrant Parks initiative to set up a new footgolf attraction. They learnt important workrelated and project management skills, spent time assessing the site, planting trees and measuring and setting up the course. On-site leader Matt commended their work ethic and positive attitude. At the end of the session the students were rewarded by trying out the new course!

Mrs Slater and Miss McCoy accompanied fifteen students to Nanny Sharon’s Alpaca Farm in Prenton. The group loved walking and feeding the alpacas!

Well done to Elisabeth Webster (Year 13) who has created an amazing revision resource on Russian History including a timeline of Russian leaders from 1855-1964!

Mini Egg Cookie Caramel Cups

Ingredients:

1 packet of ready made cookie dough

1 can of Carnation caramel

1 packet of mini eggs

100g milk chocolate

Method:

1. Preheat the oven to 180c. Grease a bun tin with margarine or butter.

2. Slice the cookie dough into 12 even pieces.

3. Place a slice at the bottom of each section of the tin.

4. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until golden brown and risen.

5. Remove from the oven and use a round shaped item or back of a spoon to push the dough up the side of the tin to make a deep cup shape.

Leave to cool.

6. Add one tablespoon of the caramel mixture to each cookie cup.

7. Melt the chocolate in the microwave, ensuring to stir it every 30 seconds. It should be liquid when it’s ready.
