Mrs Henderson, her Performing Arts team and almost a hundred students were involved in this brilliantly bonkers musical extravaganza, based on the works of Dr Seuss. Weatherhead is World Class - Prestigious Award was the Perfect Christmas Gift!

The World Class Schools Quality Mark (WCSQM) has named Weatherhead as one of the latest schools to successfully complete the accreditation process and be awarded World Class Schools status. The award’s uniqueness lies in the fact that the students are assessed with regard to whether they, themselves, are World Class, rather than the school itself. WCSQM believes that if a school is truly World Class, then the students should be able to demonstrate this.

Head Girl, Katy Barham led the student ambassadors comprising Deputy Head Girl, Tamzida Begum; School Councillors - Molly and Millie (Year 11) and Holly and Polly (Year 10), who, as a team, coordinated and led themselves through the rigorous assessment process. The girls shone throughout with unwavering dedication, impressive team work, excellent communication skills and demonstrated the outstanding calibre of Weatherhead students.

Headteacher’s Award A record 27 students, from Years 7 to 13, were presented with a Headteacher’s Award by Miss Whelan last term for outstanding effort in class, charity work, volunteering and leadership.

NCS Awards Mrs Moretta had the pleasure of attending the National Citizen Service awards to accept a Gold Award, which recognises a school with over 60 students taking part and Champion School status for the fourth year running. Weatherhead students are encouraged to take part in the NCS programme during the summer holidays, which develops personal and social skills.

The four phase programme includes an outward-bound residential, developing life skills and working as a team on a social action project.

by Tom Simms on piano. Head Girl, Katy Barham, introduced guest speaker and Weatherhead alumni, Sophie McKibbin, who inspired students with her speech about the importance of reaching high, working hard, her love of travel and how she secured her dream job as in-house lawyer for Warner Bros.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award - Class of 2018 In February, we celebrated the success of over 160 students at our Duke of Edinburgh’s Award )ZIRMRK Collectively, there were 108 Bronze awards, 40 Silver and 10 Gold which is our biggest cohort yet! A special mention to the Gold awardees &IGO] &EVVS[ 7EQQ] &VI[ 0MFF] &SYPKIV 0M^^] )PWSR +ISVKME ,ITOI 'LPSI Hunt and Megan Warren. Chloe Hunt was delighted to receive the Award for Outstanding Contribution.

Miss Whelan kicked off the proceedings highlighting our students’ dedication and hard work which mirrors the school’s core values of Respect, Reach, Resilience and Reward and welcomed Kevin Rodgers and Nicky Cage from the North West DofE Operations Team, who presented the awards. Students delighted in recapturing and sharing their memories with parents and staff and watched a compilation of expedition JSSXEKI FIJSVI VIGIMZMRK XLIMV GIVXM½GEXIW ERH FEHKIW Thank you to Mr Owen, who stepped down as DofE Manager in December - passing the baton on to Miss Faulkner. The evening was also a celebration of his contribution and achievements during his time running the DofE programme. The awards were testament to not only his hard work, but also of our three leaders; Dr Temple, Miss Basford and Mrs Grimwood. Well done to the Class of 2018 - we look forward to celebrating the next cohort under Miss Faulkner’s guidance with expeditions to Malham Cove and Loggerheads in June and July.

Year 12 historians and History subject ambassadors were invited to attend the Wirral Holocaust Memorial Commemoration at the Floral Pavilion.

The group listened to a presentation by students from Woodchurch High School about their trip to Auschwitz and joined in remembering victims of the holocaust with the lighting of memorial candles.

Students were inspired by a presentation JVSQ 0EH] 1MPIRE +VIRJIPP &EMRIW SR her evacuation from Prague on the kindertransport trains in 1939.

Lunch Time Heroes

Christmas Craft Fair The PTF organised a wonderfully festive Christmas Craft Fair, supported by hundreds of students, staff and friends of Weatherhead. The PTF GSSVHMREXIH E VEJ¾I ERH VIJVIWLQIRXW World Challenge students ran a tombola, with dozens of local stallholders selling candles, chocolates and Christmas goodies.

Chamber Choir performed a selection of Yuletide songs and carols to get everyone in the festive mood!

Following on from the success of American themed food in celebration of July 4th and Christmas dinner, the canteen served up delicious sweet and sour chicken, spring rolls, prawn crackers and egg fried rice in celebration of Chinese New Year and heart shaped biscuits on Valentine’s Day! Year 7 students from Miss Brough’s lunch club handmade Chinese lanterns and love hearts to decorate the canteen.

Year 8 Rush In 243 students visited the Liverpool Maritime Museum, over two days, taking part in the RUSH programme which educates on the effects of legal and illegal substances and the consequences of drug taking. Students watched a drama performance and explored the issues raised through theatre workshops, with actors and museum ZSPYRXIIVW 8LI XVMT JSVQW ER IWWIRXMEP EWTIGX XS XLI WGLSSP 47,') programme, providing our students with the knowledge to make informed choices and to keep themselves safe.

Year 9 Well-Being Day As part of the Year 9 PR programme, students participated in a range of workshops to help support their well-being. Kayte Walsh from My Esteem, spoke to students on how to improve self-esteem and manage emotions, Happy Times ran yoga and mindfulness sessions, Chartwells educated students on healthy eating, whilst Year 12 Mental Health First Aiders, Hannah Broster, ,ERREL 7YXXSR 0MZ ;LIEHSR ERH 6SEE %LQIH EHZMWIH WXYHIRXW on how to support themselves. During the evening parents and carers were able to access the information given to students throughout the day and watch a bespoke performance by the Open the Door Theatre Company about teenagers and the issues that they face.

#careformetoo To mark National Young Carers Awareness Day on 31st January, a small group of our Young Carers presented to staff about how school supports and helps them cope with being a young carer. The group of 51 students, from Years 7-13, celebrated with a pizza lunch.

At the end of the Autumn term, the group also enjoyed a Christmas lunch, organised by Miss Brough.

When Harry Met Aneesha...

Year 7 student Aneesha Tasnim, was chosen from hundreds of deaf students across the borough to represent the Wirral Hearing Support Service and Weatherhead to meet Prince Harry and Meghan. Harry and Meghan made a beeline for Aneesha, who was delighted to present Meghan with a pair of booties knitted by Teaching Assistant, Mrs Duffy, for the Royal baby. Harry spoke to Aneesha to ask her name and Meghan went out of her way to sign ‘thank you’.

International Women’s Day International Women’s Day and National Careers Week were celebrated across the school with a number of guest speakers and visitors (including two ex-students).

The Good Wolf With a lot of talk about Mindfulness in the media of late, a recent survey found that students who employ regular QMRHJYPRIWW TVEGXMGI MQTVSZIH QSSH IQTEXL] GSR½HIRGI WIPJ IWXIIQ GSTMRK WOMPPW ERH ER EFMPMX] XS TE] EXXIRXMSR and focus. On the back of this, Mindfulness Champion, Miss Folan has launched an exciting new group for Sixth Form students called the Good Wolf (which originates from an old Cherokee parable).

The group meet every Tuesday lunchtime to practise mindfulness and share useful tools of positive psychology. Students have embraced the challenges of stepping out of their comfort zone, embarking on homework tasks including random acts of kindness and a digital detox. Abbie, Year 12 commented, ‘our vision is to grow the group and reach younger year groups over the next few months, I would love to take the tools I’ve built up and share them.’

In the meantime, if you are interested in practising mindfulness yourselves at home consider downloading some of the superb resources that are available, for example Headspace, Buddify, Calm or Breathe apps and Fern Cotton’s Happy Place podcast.

PERFORMING ARTS

Weatherhead Inspired by MTV’s Unplugged, Weatherhead’s second acoustic event was once again a huge success. The theatre was transformed into a jazz club inspired backdrop and our talented Music students wowed the audience by candlelight. There were stunning performances from the Junior and Senior Choir, with their renditions of the Jackson 5’s I Want You Back and Holding Out for a Hero F] &SRRMI 8]PIV +'7) students performed beautiful harmonies with Bohemian Rhapsody and Someone Like You by Adele.

Over 150 pupils (and their teddies) enjoyed the performances, which were themed around children’s stories, including We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.

Music Grade Exam Success Congratulations to Year 11 student, Alice Mathieu, on obtaining a Merit in her Grade 6 singing exam.

The group were tasked with completing a series of activities to see if they could escape a Zombie Apocalypse! This included cryptic puzzles, making structures and working out how to escape from the zombies the quickest! The girls also enjoyed a presentation on careers and opportunities in STEM.

World Book Day 8LI )RKPMWL HITEVXQIRX [IRX EPP SYX SR World Book Day, which this year celebrated ‘story telling’. As well as dressing up as popular book characters and inviting students to guess the costume, staff organised lunchtime activities. Themes included; Dr Seuss (with a pin the hat on the cat, word searches and dotto-dot activities), Jurassic Park and Harry Potter. In lessons, KS3 students enjoyed a WBD quiz with ‘judge a book by its cover’, ‘teacher’s favourite’, ‘As seen on Screen’ and ‘genre’ rounds. Students were also given the opportunity to discuss their favourite book, read short extracts from popular books and take part in a mini quiz during form time. Harry Potter Night The theatre was transformed into Hogwarts for the annual Harry Potter book night, with a chance for students to sample Care of Magical Creatures and Potions lessons, as well as creating their own Owlery!

Over eighty Potter fans got together in a variety of amazing costumes and were allocated houses. Slytherin and Ravenclaw [IVI ½VWX XS QIIX 0]RHWE] JVSQ Animals Take Over and her amazing creatures. The fantastic beasts included a rat, a friendly bearded dragon, a gorgeous sugar glider, a coiling snake, a hairy tarantula, a headspinning owl and a pocket-sized tree frog! +V]J½RHSV and ,YJ¾ITYJJ started their night at the craft tables, where they made their own potion jars of colourful, scented bath salts, before moving on to create cute face-cloth owls.

University Applications Over the last six months, Sixth Form students have enjoyed University Open Days, completed residentials, taken part in taster sessions and taken careers advice. Miss Smith, Guidance Coordinator, also delivered a presentation on using Unifrog to help submit a Personal Statement.

Police Academy Congratulations to Year 12 student, Brandy Gallagher, who has successfully secured a place on the Merseyside Police Volunteer Cadet Scheme. The one-year scheme engages young people in a structured training programme, aimed at developing key life skills and encouraging them to become role models and ambassadors.

Brandy will spend two hours, every Saturday morning, learning more about the police service, gaining an insight into dog handling, QSYRXIH TSPMGI ½VIEVQW XLI GSRXVSP VSSQ TYFPMG SVHIV XVEMRMRK and forensics. This is an exciting opportunity for Brandy who hopes to join the police after leaving school.

In the Pink!

Students raised an impressive £862.82 for the Breast Care Unit at Clatterbridge Hospital, at the annual Pink Day charity fundraiser as part of breast cancer awareness month. Fundraising events included pink themed fancy dress, the Pink Day talent show (one of the most anticipated student events of the school calendar which did not disappoint) and cake sales. As well as students and staff dressing in pink to show their support,Year 12 and Year 13 went head to head, competing for the best decorated common room. Whilst Year 12 brought an air of sophistication and class to proceedings,Year 13 were crowned winners for the sheer volume of pink in the upper common room!

Halloween Disco In addition to decorating the common rooms and donning ,EPPS[IIR SYX½XW JSV XLI HE] 8LI 7M\XL *SVQ XIEQ IRNS]IH organising a haunting Halloween disco for Year 7, with a frightful fancy dress competition, dance offs, ghoulish games and plenty of prizes.

The Year 7’s had an amazing night and £157.09 was raised for NSPCC.

Christmas Celebrations Students and staff joined in with National Christmas Jumper Day in support of the NSPCC. Students were later rewarded for their hard work, endeavour and attendance on the last day of the Christmas term. Students were treated to the ‘Breck Road nativity’ with memorable performances from the Sixth Form Team!

It’s All Downhill Over February half term, 19 Sixth Formers accompanied by Mr Stringer, Mrs Conway and Mr Barr, travelled to Austria to enjoy a weeks skiing in the resort of Flachau. Former Weatherhead students, Molly Harrison, an Apprentice at Wirral Borough Council and Rosie Murphy, Graduate and Apprentice Coordinator came in to talk to a small cohort of Year 13 students about the Wirral Apprenticeship Programme.

Coinciding with National Apprenticeship Week, the visit gave our students an idea of the opportunities within the local area.

Dave Armson from Ask Apprenticeships delivered a talk to Year 13 students who are not considering University, outlining what apprenticeships are, the different levels and how to apply.

Dr Pooja Saini from Liverpool John Moores University came into school and gave a fascinating insight to over 30 students in Years 10 to 13 about studying Psychology, jobs within the sector and her own career path.

Time to Think!

Representatives from Unilever visited Weatherhead to deliver their Time to Think workshop to Year 9 Computer Science students. They talked about how computer skills are used in industry, to bridge the gap between education and employment and gave examples of case studies including the redesign of an ice cream carton.

A small cohort of Year 8 and 9 students were invited to attend the Wirral Young Chamber Skills Show at the Hive. The careers fair allows students to get involved with hands-on activities and to speak to a variety of different employers about job opportunities and career paths.

Petal Pot In February, our Year 10 Petal Pot designers attended a ceremony at the Design Museum, 0SRHSR 8LI KMVPW were delighted to present a cheque for just under £1,700 to a representative from Claire House the proceeds raised from the sales of the Petal Pot (which won the Design Ventura competition last year, and was manufactured and sold in the Design Museum shop).

World’s Biggest Coffee Morning Weatherhead staff showed their support for Macmillan Cancer and joined thousands of people across the country in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning 8LI IZIRX [EW LSWXIH F] SYV 7IRMSV 0IEHIVWLMT Team and sales of their delicious homemade, Bake Off worthy cakes, raised almost £300 for Macmillan Cancer. Thank you to those who baked and donated.

Alternative Advent Calendar Thank you and congratulations to everyone who contributed to the Wirral Foodbank appeal before Christmas. A group of students met the Birkenhead warehouse manager who gave XLIQ E XSYV ERH I\TPEMRIH LS[ HSREXMSRW EVI HMWXVMFYXIH 0EWX year, they saw a 38% increase in demand but a 10% shortfall in donations. Families in need are given a three day food parcel, issued via 15 distribution centres across the Wirral. The foodbank also offers people the opportunity to talk to staff about their problems and be signposted to organisations who can offer help. Together, we donated 350kgs of food.

Christmas Boxes of Delight Miss Brough and her army of Year 7 helpers, collected and wrapped gifts for almost 120 residents from Victoria House and Mariners’ Park Care Home. Accompanied by members of the choir, Year 7 charity captains and representatives visited the residents, before Christmas, to hand deliver presents and spend time with the elderly. The visits form an important part of the school’s ongoing intergenerational and community programme, as our links with local care homes and residents continue to strengthen.

Students participated in a number of activities to raise money for Red Nose Day 2019 including Neon Just Dance, cake sales supported by Senior Charity Captains Mollie Stafford and Jenny Davies and an obstacle course led by Sports Captain, Georgia Williams, the Sports Council and CSLA students and raised almost £400.

Weatherhead’s Got Talent

Children in Need Staff and students adorned spots to support Pudsey bear in aid of Children in Need and raised over £650.

Almost £150 was raised for Wirral Foodbank from ticket sales for the Christmas talent show, Weatherhead’s Got Talent. After a rigorous EYHMXMSR TVSGIWW EGXW [IRX XLVSYKL XS XLI KVERH ½REP FYX MX [EW /EMXP]R Hilton’s winning rendition of Rip Tide which won the judges over.

Well done to our eight World Challengers who have been busy fundraising since September, for their once-in-a-lifetime adventure to Malaysia. Supported by Mrs Daniels they have held tuck shops at school events, organised cake sales, sponsored events and more!
