Computer Science WHY TAKE GCSE COMPUTER SCIENCE? Computer Science is a very practical subject – students will be able to use the knowledge and skills they learn in the classroom on real-world problems. It is also a highly creative subject that calls on learners to be inventive. REQUIREMENTS OF THE COURSE: GCSE Computer Science will encourage learners to: ● Analyse problems in computational terms through practical experience of solving such problems, including designing, writing and debugging programs. ● Think creatively, innovatively, analytically, logically and critically. ● Understand the components that make up digital systems, and how they communicate with one another and with other systems. ● Understand the impacts of digital technology to the individual and to wider society. THE SUBJECT IS ASSESSED IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS: The final grade awarded will come from two examination papers completed at the end of the course. Component 1: Computer systems – 50% ● Study how processors work. ● Investigate computer memory and storage. ● Explore modern network layouts and how they function. ● Build skills in the ever important realm of cyber security. ● Investigate how types of software are used within computer systems. ● Stretch wider comprehension of how computers and computing affect ethical, legal, cultural and environmental issues.
