A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire for the first Saturday of our 2025 season. I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable day filled with both equine stars and glitter clad performers!
Today marks only the seventh staging of the Group 3 William Hill Brontë Cup with a prize fund of £100,000, one of now over forty contests in our season to offer a six-figure purse Aimed at fillies and mares over a mile and three quarters, it is part of a wider plan to encourage the best female stayers to remain in training in Britain beyond their three-year-old careers. One example would be Term of Endearment, who won this race last season, giving recently retired Grand National winning rider Rachael Blackmore a 100% strike rate on the Knavesmire.
The feature handicap is a valuable sprint over five furlongs, again generously supported by William Hill. A packed field of speedsters, including some familiar names to racing fans, for example Bergerac who has two wins from his previous ten starts here. They will hurtle down the 1,000 metres in under a minute; if you need help finding the winner, then try the “SmartView” version of the form on page 49, by kind courtesy of the Racing Post
Our fifth race today, remembers Reg Bond, a tremendous supporter of York Racecourse and Yorkshire racing as well as being a shining light for the joy of being an owner-breeder; Bond Chairman (2.40pm) carries his well-known silks this afternoon.
We proudly welcome the friends and families of The Royal Yorkshire Regiment supporting our sixth race of the day, as well as their fabulous band. I hope they all have a memorable raceday and we are all hugely proud of our county regiment.
The team have been busy preparing for your return: it is the first Spring Saturday for the award-winning Bustardthorpe Development (see page 10), and you can enjoy the Churchill Tyres Lawn, Theakston or Guinness Bars to wash down some fresh, local Fish ‘n’ Chips.
Equine ambassador to the Knavesmire, Nico (aka Nearly Caught when successful on the track), is back with us; do go and say hello to him and our partner team from New Beginnings.
The high-quality sport can only be achieved through the support of racegoers and of our sponsors. Many thanks to William Hill, the Bond Family, the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing team and the European Breeders’ Fund for their valuable backing
From a personal perspective, I am enchanted to welcome to new York Taylored Swift to perform for us all after racing It’s beyond my wildest dreams but just hope it isn’t a cruel summer. Enjoy from the stage between the Knavesmire and Bustardthorpe Stand. The sound system is local to the stage so for the best audio experience, do dance on down to the front of it.
I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day

A WINTER’S TALE:
WHAT IS NEW AT YORK THIS SEASON?
NEXT GENERATION CANOPIES CHAMPAGNE LAWNS
Nine next generation canopies now stand proudly on the Champagne Lawns. Clever enough to let the grass grow beneath them, they should prove popular if we get a summer shower. For the October racedays the built-in heaters will allow racegoers to keep enjoying the fresh air Each one has a speaker, so the race commentary will come to your table
BUSTARDTHORPE END
SOUTHERN END DEVELOPMENT
Last August we were honoured when Her Majesty The Queen, our Royal Patron, opened this development to the South of the Knavesmire Stand. Check out the Churchill Tyres lawn & canopy, the Theakston and Guinness bars, as well as food outlets and a WIlliam Hill shop
MR MOWITALL
Joining the grounds team over winter were a couple of robotic mowers, one creatively named, Mr Mowitall. They are helping with the lawns and car parks, leaving the human talent better able to focus on the track itself
THE TEAM NEVER REST
Maintenance is key, if a little dull. Over 6,000 pints of paint have been used by the team this winter and the Knavesmire Stand Roof has had extensive repairs, (it is nearly thirty years old!).
A LIVING FLOWER WALL
OPPOSITE THE MELROSE STAND
The flowers are petunia and petchoa, grown by Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty and his team, from seedlings in our greenhouses. That Insta moment now has real flowers behind it.
THE
BARS HAVE IT
Over the Winter a number of bars have been given a face-lift. There is a new Pink Gin & Cocktail Bar on the main Champagne Lawns, a second Guinness Bar near the Roberto Lawn, with a refreshed Prosecco Bar next door The fun murals from the Dublin based brand should make a good selfie
NEW ON THE MENU
Around the racecourse there are a lot of new choices. Perhaps the sweet treats of the Churros will follow your Nachos, both are now part of the Knavesmire Courtyard offering.
If you like spice, then the eateries on the ground floors of both the Knavesmire and Ebor Stands now serve our homemade Curry Club dishes.
Finger lickin’ chicken? Try the grills in either the Bustardthorpe End or the John Carr Terrace. Try the Rustic Pizza freshly baked at the Moët Roof Terrace.

A limited shuttle bus service to York station will collect from Knavesmire Road, at the northern end of the racecourse, it will operate whilst there are enough customers to make a bus viable, after the last race and after the concert. The service is provided by a commercial operator. A return service operates on raceday mornings.

There is a taxi pick up point at the Northern end of the racecourse adjacent to Campleshon Road. Private Hire vehicles will meet pre-booked customers, also at the Northern End. Pick up by UBER is from a dedicated area in Car Park A only.
WHERE CAN I PLACE A BET
The tote will be pleased to take your bet at their many windows or look out for a passing courier. Remember to try the small stake-big payout bets such as the Jackpot, Placepot or Trifecta. The William Hill Betting Shops (Bustardthorpe End, Knavesmire Stand ground floor and front of Melrose Stand) offer a full SP service, so bets on racing and the wider sporting world. The colour of the main betting ring returns, set in front of the Knavesmire Stand, take on the challenge. Contactless payment is available for all the above options. Good luck.
BAR CLOSING TIMES
Key bars will remain open up to 7pm. The serving of drinks in hospitality areas will be as specified in your booking details. Have an enjoyable time with us but please respect our neighbours and the wider city as you leave the racecourse.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
York Racecourse always strives to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control. We have employed professionally-trained and experienced stewards. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will usher you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and quietly. If we are unable to re-occupy the stands, you may be invited to return to your car or coach. Departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. The foregoing is a precautionary tale.
Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai is proud to be supporting two Group 2 features - the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes and the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes – races which continue to form an integral part of our partnership with York Racecourse and our wider international sponsorship portfolio.
This year we have extended our support to include title sponsorship of the new Al Basti Equiworld , Dubai Summer Saturday on 28th June which combines exciting Group 3 action on the track with post-racing entertainment to match, ahead of our return in August for the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes in August.
Congratulations are due to York Racecourse Chairman, Bridget Guerin, and the York Racecourse Committee for their continued commitment to continually improving the quality of racing on the Knavesmire and ever increasing prize money which I am sure will prove to be a compelling proposition for owners and trainers throughout the season.
I wish them and all those involved with staging of today’s meeting horses a pleasant and successful day.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Welcome to the first Saturday of the York season. We start with a handicap. Such races are designed for close competition with the handicapper as the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance, seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.
The best on past form will be the highest rated horse and so will carry more weight, Arnhem will hope it’s not a bridge too far today. As you didn’t ask, their racecard numbers are allocated at random by the computer!
Looking for help? Follow the red bi plane through the card for the racecourse tipster’s recommendations.

Course Record: 1m 8.23s by Mince (09-Sep-12)
All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years
Leading course trainer (20-25): R Fahey (28 wins from 436 runners, 6%) runs ROCK OPERA Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): D O’Meara (10 wins from 63 runners, 16%) runs MUSCIKA
Weightwatcher: DANZAN won off a handicap mark of 79, his rating is now down 8lb to 71.
Longest Traveller: RAY VONN trained by B Brookhouse, Newmarket, 163 miles.
NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 29th May
KNAVESMIRE TIP
Victories have been elusive for DANZAN of late, but he has dropped to a highly-attractive rating as a result. This course holds no fears for him and the Tim Easterby-trained veteran is well worth chancing from 8lb lower than his last wining mark. Wen Moon and Rock Opera, who sports a first-time visor, are others that boast some respectable efforts here, while Beale Street and last-time-out winners Protest Rally and Muscika are certainly no back numbers based on their peak form. RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 6f
Race
Age: 2
Stalls: Centre
This one is limited to the babies of the game, aged just two; they don’t have much if any track experience hence the term “novice” All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. Now the fun bit, to add a layer of competition (or for some complexity) a runner’s weight can be lowered (an allowance) based on having been bought comparatively cheaply at a recognised auction, so the market was deemed as an assessment of their quality and hence potential. The most expensive being categorised as Band A, the next group as Band B and so on. All the boys in the highest band, A, start from a 9st 7lb weight, that explains the burden carried by Advance Twentyfive. Any horse from a lower Band racing in opposition to one from a higher Band, benefits from an allowance, so Champion Island carries a 2lb lower weight because “better” horses such as Advance Twentyfive race against him. So on, down the bands, which is why Auspicious (from Band C) and Beach Partee (Band D) have less weight again. That’s the male runners explained; any fillies also get a benefit to give them a fair chance given their different physical development at this age, so Alfa Patisserie carries 5lbs less than her Band C male opponent.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
TADEJ wasn’t beaten far despite finishing fifth in a class 2 novice over C&D recently and could well take some stopping if he settles better now he has some more experience. However, there are several appealing newcomers that merit betting checks. Richard Fahey, who won this in 2023, sends out two notable contenders in the form of Advance Twentyfive and Mister Freeman, while Lieutenant Kije and Alfa Patisserie are other attractively-bred debutants to keep an eye on.

TOP JOCKEY AT YORK
The Championship will be determined by the number of winners recorded and in the event of a tie, placed efforts will prove the deciding factor. The winner will receive the acclaimed Living North Trophy, as well as £2,500, to celebrate their achievement

HOW MIGHT YOU SOLVE A BIG HANDICAP?
WILLIAM HILL MORE TOP PRICES HANDICAP
This afternoon’s William Hill More Top Prices Handicap looks a tricky betting proposition for even the most experienced of racegoers with a fiercely competitive field of 13 closely matched runners set to go to post. Whilst picking a lucky number or a meaningful name may produce the winner from time to time, a wiser approach would be to apply some straightforward methodology to finding the potential winner.
Narrowing down the field of 13 declared runners can prove easier than you think if you follow a few simple guidelines, to hopefully identify the winner of this and the other handicaps throughout the afternoon.
Before we start, it is important to understand what a handicap is. Once a horse has raced three times, they are given an official rating (often referred to as a handicap mark) by the British Horseracing Authority. This provides a numerical guide to each horse’s level of ability. Ratings usually start at around 40 for a modest performer with the mighty Frankel finishing his career rated a lofty 140. The ranking works essentially as an ability scale, so each time a horse runs this rating is adjusted either upwards for a good performance or downwards for a weaker effort, so that it reflects the horse’s most recent form.
Each of these rating points are meant to reflect 1lb in weight, so looking at today’s race, Jm Junglerated 96 - is considered 1lb “better” than Venture Capital who is rated 95. If these horses were to race carrying the same weight, then theoretically Jm Jungle should win as he is the better horse according to the handicapper. The handicap is therefore designed to create a level playing field and, in theory, if the handicapper was completely correct in his assessment, then all 13 runners would cross the line together. Of course, this is never the case so how do we separate those that might on a favourable mark ahead of the race?
Some horses may be improving quicker than the handicapper’s assessment, given a rise of just 4 or 5lb for their latest victory but in fact progressing further than that, so is ahead of their mark still. On the other hand, horses who continue to run without winning will see their rating come back down to a winnable mark on previous form, once again given a chance to get back into the winners’ enclosure. The process is to find which category each horse falls into.
Now we know what a handicap is and how it works, it is time to delve into the different factors to consider when searching for the winner. The winner is ultimately what we all want to find!
1) FORM
Here at York it often pays to side with horses in form and this is a Class 2 Handicap, meaning a high level of ability in the field. The likes of Bond Chairman and Miss Attitude have a fair bit to prove arriving here on the back of poor runs. It is also important that horses look like they still have a bit of improvement left, and Duran falls into this category having only been handed a 4lb rise for a victory in a strong race at Haydock last time.
2) THE DRAW
Where a horse is drawn in the stalls can be an important factor, particularly in a sprint as it helps to be able to best see your opponents, and this is perhaps one of the most debated topics in racing. However here at York, in recent seasons those drawn low to middle have often held the upper hand, with seven of the last ten winners of this exact race drawn in a single figure stall. The likes of Loom, Duran and Jumbeau could use this to their advantage.
3) DISTANCE
Having a runner who has already shown their liking for a particular trip can be invaluable, especially over this minimum trip where speed is vital. The only horse not to win over today’s distance before is Habooba.
4)
GROUND
The ground, and its effect on each horse, is one of the most important, but often overlooked, factors when it comes to making a selection. In simple terms, different horses run better on different types of surfaces – some prefer a lightning quick surface whilst others run best when the mud is flying. Miss Attitude is one who will enjoy a quicker surface whilst It Just Takes Time previously won on a surface that was listed as heavy. So, make sure to check the weather and the ground description.
5) YORK RECORD
“Horses for courses” is not a popular phrase by accident, especially here at York which has a knack at producing track specialists. There are four course winners in the field, namely Duran, Jm Jungle, It Just Takes Time and Bergerac, with the first-named the only horse to win over this distance at the track.
6) CONCLUSION
Following these simple rules has helped to narrow down the shortlist. Duran appeals most from a favourable draw, arriving here in good form at a track where he has won twice before, including over this very distance. The consistent course winner Jm Jungle must always enter calculations in these big sprint handicaps whilst for those looking for a bigger-priced each-way selection, then Bergerac can round out the shortlist having now dropped below his last winning mark.

Prize Money: £65,000

We return to handicap conditions, remember the best on past performance will be the highest rated horse and so will carry more weight than the lowest rated horse; Jm Jungle is at the top of the weights on this occasion. Five furlongs is the shortest distance in UK racing so don’t blink as they flash home
So, pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C denoting has won at York such or D meaning won over this distance. Notice how Duran is one to carry both consonants after his name

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Jm Jungle has finished second to the progressive American Affair on his last two starts but with that rival out of the way, this previous course winner is a must for consideration. However, he has 3lb more to shoulder here and another old rival of his, VENTURE CAPITAL could be the way to go. A ready winner at Ripon last month, the Kevin Ryan-trained gelding has fewer miles on the clock and could be better equipped to cope with his revised mark. The upwardly mobile Loom, Habooba and Duran complete the shortlist.

KNAVESMIRE MEMORIES
That Was a Crowd
Big crowds for big races are well known on the Knavesmire, but rarely have they matched the attendance on this day back in 1982.
His Holiness Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass with a congregation estimated to be in excess of 210,000.
Quite the Knavesmire memory.
A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there accessible and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
Can I bring my assistance dog?
Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome.
There was one more thing?
Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 1m 6f
Race Type: Group Three
Prize Money: £100,000
Age: 4+f&m
Stalls: Inside Rail
A relatively recent addition to the Pattern schedule at York, think of these top-quality races in football divisions starting from Group 1. This Group 3 contest is a valuable prize (£100,000), as well as offering the prestige of “black type” in their pedigree That desire for competition limits the race to horses of the same sex, being all females. The intention is to tempt connections into a longer career on the track for such thoroughbreds before a second life as a broodmare. Divina Grace pays a price of carrying extra weight for having won already at this level.
See what the Press think on their selections board by the Winner’s Enclosure, at least you can then blame them.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Term Of Endearment failed to land a blow in Dubai on her first start for the William Haggas yard, but she has to be respected judged on the six-year-old’s success in the Lillie Langtry last year However, SUENO finished two places behind Scenic when fourth in a Listed contest at Goodwood at the start of the month, but she did well to get as close as she did considering her troubled passage. With Ryan Moore taking over in the plate, it would be no surprise to see her overturn that form to score.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
White Crown Star produced another good effort to make the frame at Newmarket at the start of the month and needs considering, despite a 2lb higher rating. Sweet Fantastic outran odds of 16/1 to finish a close third at Chester last time and is one to note, but it may pay to side with FRANKIES DREAM. Jennie Candlish’s charge finished a fair fifth over track and trip earlier in the month and could defy a 4lb higher mark with Hector Crouch booked. FRANKIES DREAM

What a pleasure and privilege it is for the regiment to once again be part of another exciting day of racing at York Racecourse.
COUNTY-PROUD. COMBAT READY.
Maj Gen Stenning
The British Army is modernising at pace, adapting to the demands of an increasingly complex and unpredictable world. The Royal Yorkshire Regiment stands at the forefront of this transformation, reflecting the diversity of operations, change and readiness that define today’s Army.
Since our formation in 2006, we have deployed on twenty operational tours, serving with distinction in Iraq, Afghanistan, Estonia, and the Balkans. Wherever we go, we serve the Nation and deliver operational excellence.
The past year has seen Yorkshire soldiers busy both at home and abroad. Our Regular and Reserve soldiers have deployed to countries across the globe including Kenya, Poland and the USA, as well as helping train Ukrainian troops. They’ve even found the time to excel in sport, with notable success in Rugby, Football, Cycling, Boxing, Skiing and Hyrox.
Your Royal County Regiment is thriving; operationally focused, modern in outlook, and proud of our county roots. We will continue to strengthen our bonds with Yorkshire by collaborating with local businesses and organisations, and deepening our ties across the community.
With a strong presence across our county’s cities and towns, the Battalions and the Band of the Royal Yorkshire Regiment are actively recruiting now.
I wish you all an enjoyable and successful day at York Racecourse.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
MUNSIF makes his handicap debut off a mark of 87 which may not be enough to stop him from landing a hat-trick. The winner of both his starts over a mile and a quarter, the son of Sea The Stars made all last month at Pontefract with any amount in hand. Far Ahead takes a big step up in trip after winning over seven furlongs and is interesting, but the recent Ascot second Cape Breton looks the bigger danger off just 4lb higher

Mums Tipple may not be the force of old, but he ran well off 2lb lower last time out when third here. He can make the frame but preference is for DELICACY, who won that contest and seems to be going from strength to strength for trainer James Owen. Arctic Dawn is another to take seriously in first-time cheekpieces, with the return to seven furlongs and the booking of Hollie Doyle of interest
