York Racecard - Saturday 12th July

Page 1

A very warm (and it is set to be warm) welcome to one of the most famous days of our year, celebrating the 66th staging of the John Smith’s Cup.

Every summer since 1960, racing fans have tried to solve this ultra-competitive handicap which is the richest 10f handicap in Britain. Everyone will have their own system for finding the winner, however Course & Distance form should always be respected, so Thunder Run from the local yard of Karl Burke. The nature of a handicap creates an opportunity for a talented apprentice, will Elizabeth Gale aboard Romieu or Warren Fentiman partnered with Austrian Theory follow in the footsteps of Classic winning riders, Paul Hanagan and Adam Kirby who used their claim to maximum effect in this race?

There are two tremendous Black Type races to enjoy, the Group 3 John Smith’s Silver Cup for stayers and the Listed John Smith’s City Walls for the sprinters. Again, a proven liking for our home straight will be demonstrated in the betting markets, expect to see Al Qareem who took the honours for Karl Burke when winning here last month, near the top of many lists amongst the stayers. Whilst Jm Jungle for another local yard (the Quinns) also has a liking for the Knavesmire having won the opening race of the 2024 Sky Bet Ebor Festival.

The support of everyone from John Smith’s, now and over all those decades, as well as your own backing today, sees the prize money this afternoon at a record of £475,000 - thank you for your support.

It is rare that Yorkshire is forecast to reach today’s temperatures, if you want to learn a little more about how we have planned for it, then read p10.

The entries for our big races at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival give us encouragement that many of the stars of the season, including some on show today, will return to the Knavesmire between Wednesday 20 and Saturday 23 August. Contenders in today’s races are shown by our logo next to their name All six runners in the Group 3 John Smith’s Silver Cup are entered in the Sky Bet Ebor, connections will hope to win today and then land the bulk of the £500,000 on Saturday 23 August. Three of them (Tabletalk, Subsequent & Al Qareem) also retain the option of staying in Pattern company by having entered the Group 2 Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup, back here on Friday 22nd August.

Listen to your choice of live bands before, during and even after racing, keep up with any or all of Newmarket, the Lions, Wimbledon or the Lords Test on television, maybe try one of Chef Hannah’s homemade patisserie cakes from the ground floor eateries in both of the Ebor and Knavesmire Stands or stand by the finish to feel as well as hear the thunder of hooves in the final furlong. However you spend your raceday, I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful one

For now, raise a toast to the John Smith’s Cup.

RACING IN THE SUNSHINE

York is designed around being a summer venue, so enjoy the lawns and terraces.

• As it has been a nice summer, the runners today will have acclimatised to running in warm weather, to be honest they are better at this than us humans.

• Specially trained vets & our horse team will keep a close eye for any early signs of distress.

• Horses are best cooled from the outside in, there are 16 fixed equine showers plus a Water Boy (think mobile shower) if needed on the track.

• York adopted water misting fans over a decade ago, they do exactly what it says on the tin, it is an industrial fan connected to a hosepipe to make mist!

• Ice will be added to the water troughs, so when you see those buckets being flung over the runners, be jealous.

• The irrigation system consists of 360 state-of-the-art sprinklers connected to two boreholes. This means that neither mains nor river water is being used.

• Even in this dry spring and summer, we have only used about a third of the permissible volume of borehole water, so plenty left in that sandstone.

• The team water during the night, the most efficient time for both absorption and when winds are lightest.

• Using what is known as a wetting agent, means that the water is better transferred to the roots of the grass rather than sitting on top, in layman’s terms each drop is made 20% more efficient.

• The living roof in the Bustardthorpe End is irrigated by the rainwater harvesting from the adjacent canopy.

FOR HORSES FOR THE TRACK FOR RACEGOERS

• The dress code has been relaxed.

• Water is available free of charge from all the main bars.

• There are drinking fountains and taps around the racecourse.

• Suncream is available free of charge from dispensers and the Racecourse Office.

• Treat yourself to some locally made ice cream.

• Modern buildings are air conditioned, though the number of doors can limit the impact of it.

• The umbrellas and the canopies do offer shade, take care they are not a sun block just a 20% reduction in those rays.

FOR THE TEAM

• There is iced water at every start for the stalls handlers and those working in the sunshine.

• Our grounds team have altered their working day, doing more in the relative cool of the early morning.

• The relaxation of the dress code extends to our team.

• People who have roles that mean they are standing in the sunshine are being rotated and rested during the afternoon.

FOR THE HOUNDS

• Our four-legged helpers at the gates have not been forgotten.

• Look out for their dog bowls and the canopy they are working beneath.

• As valued members of the team, they too will work in shorter shifts.

Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai is proud to be supporting two Group 2 features - the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes and the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes – races which continue to form an integral part of our partnership with York Racecourse and our wider international sponsorship portfolio.

This year we have extended our support to include title sponsorship of the new Al Basti Equiworld , Dubai Summer Saturday on 28th June which combines exciting Group 3 action on the track with post-racing entertainment to match, ahead of our return in August for the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes in August.

Congratulations are due to York Racecourse Chairman, Bridget Guerin, and the York Racecourse Committee for their continued commitment to continually improving the quality of racing on the Knavesmire and ever increasing prize money which I am sure will prove to be a compelling proposition for owners and trainers throughout the season.

I wish them and all those involved with staging of today’s meeting horses a pleasant and successful day.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there accessible and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

Can I bring my assistance dog?

Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome. There was one more thing?

Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

The first of several competitive handicaps. Such races are designed for close competition so, the handicapper, is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.

This one is for 3yo+ horses run over 1 mile, with Flight Plan soaring highest.

The high handicap rating band of 86-105 means that it will attract some smart types (like for Test cricketers a score of over 100 denotes a top performer).

Why not visit the Parade Ring to see them up close before making your final selection.

LAST YEAR’S RACE

Winner: BLUE FOR YOU

Trainer: David O’Meara

Jockey: Daniel Tudhope

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS

THE TALE OF THE CLOCK

RaceiQ Par Time: 1m 37.11s

(Based on going description: Good to firm (good in places))

Course Record: 1m 34.35s by Croupier (18-May-23)

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

Leading course trainer (20-25): K R Burke (29 wins from 260 runners, 11%) runs FLIGHT PLAN

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): K R Burke (7 wins from 40 runners, 18%) runs FLIGHT PLAN

Weightwatcher: BLUE FOR YOU won off a handicap mark of 99, his rating is now down 5lb to 94

Fancy That: D O’Meara won this race in 2015, 2019, 2023 and 2024 The stable runs BLUE FOR YOU and BOPEDRO today. Longest Traveller: REMMOOZ trained by O Burrows, Lambourn, 202 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 10th July

KNAVESMIRE TIP

A fine fourth in the Jersey at the Royal meeting, Remmooz is sure to have his supporters now switched to a handicap for the first time However, the vote goes to OLD COCK, who pounced late to defeat Sisyphean over C&D in May. Now four from seven on turf, the progressive son of Calyx could have plenty more in the locker and a 4lb rise looks fair. Blue For You has won the previous two renewals of this contest, the latest from 1lb higher, and he is entitled to the utmost respect.

YESTERDAYS RACING CTION

THE WILLIAM HILL SUMMER STAKES (GROUP 3)

A patient ride by Billy Loughnane saw him power home to victory aboard the Richard Hughes trained Sayidah Dariyan.

2024 Sky Bet Lowther winner Celandine showed plenty of speed leaving the stalls, taking them along at a good pace under Paul Mulrennan. She was taking on for the lead by Rage Of Bamby, with the pair sent for home at the two furlong pole.

The eye was drawn to the smooth travelling Nighteyes for David O’Meara, who opted to come down the stands side to make her challenge. Eventual winner Sayidah Dariyan was caught in behind horses but managed to fight her way to the front inside the final two hundred yards to lead the field.

Nighteyes continued her run to move into second but could not reel in the winner, who may return to the Knavesmire in August as she is already entered in the Group One Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe.

20 Wednesday

Things to do: Win a race that has thrice been best in the world

Twenty seven of the best middle distance horses are currently entered in the £1.25m Juddmonte International. An intriguing list of hopefuls is made all the more interesting by the entry of Sheema Classic winner, Danon Decile, owned by Danox Co Ltd and trained by Shogo Yasuda. It would be a first European excursion for the team and they will be hoping to go one better than Zenno Rob Roy, who finished second exactly twenty years ago after making the 25,000-mile round trip. France could be well represented with the likes of Caldangan, who was last seen winning the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. Dual Derby winner Lambourn would likely be the chief hope of the Emerald Isle for Aidan O’Brien, along with Sandown Eclipse winner Delacroix, they head thirteen potential runners from across the Irish Sea. The best British hope comes in the form of Field Of Gold for the Gosden team. Bred by Juddmonte, the the son of Kingman is already dual Group One winner this season and currently heads the betting.

Become the sixteenth colt to win Sky Bet Great Voltigeur and Betfred St Leger

Fifteen colts have done the double and this year’s list of entries provides plenty of hope that 2025 could see that number increase, following Continuous’s success in 2023. Merchant looks to be the leading hope after he won the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot, having won at York on his previous outing Serious Contender chased home Lambourn in the Irish Derby after previously finishing just a length behind Merchant at Royal Ascot, he looks to be the current number one for Aidan O’Brien. Ralph Beckett could be well represented with the unbeaten Amiloc. He could well follow in the footsteps of 2020 winner Pyledriver, who won the King Edward VII Stakes before winning this Knavesmire contest.

21 Thursday

Things to do: Prove to be one of the best fillies in Europe

The last time the race went over to mainland Europe was in 2012, when Shareta scored for Alain de Roger-Dupre, this year Les Bleus could have Sunly, in the colours of powerhouse, Juddmonte. She may not be alone, with Aventure completing any potential French challenge for Christophe Ferland. Ballydoyle has had a strong grip on this race in recent years, winning four of the last five renewals. Minne Hauk looks likely to lead the line after her Betfred Oaks victory. Tattersalls Musidora winner Whirl could also be a major player after finishing just a neck behind her stablemate at Epsom. In all, there are a eight entries from the Emerald Isle, including from Aidan’s son, Joseph and Paddy Twomey. Kalpana provides the chief home team challenge for Andrew Balding and is another representing Juddmonte. She’s already a Group One winner and any cut in the ground would surely increase her chances of the York race becoming a second.

Sky Bet Ebor Festival, we mark your calendar.

22 Friday

Things to do: Be the fastest

Emphatic Norfolk winner Charles Darwin could bid to become the first two-year-old since Kingsgate Native (2007) to win the Friday feature as well as the first for Aidan O’Brien since Mozart in 2001. Australian revelation Asfoora, may well attempt to go a few better than his fourth last year and could give Henry Dwyer a first winner on the Knavesmire. Commonwealth Cup winner Time For Sandals will bid to give trainer Harry Eustace another Group One, he may well be joined by the horse that finished behind him that day, Arizona Blaze. Who represents big spenders, Amo Racing.

Follow in the hooves of greats like Mill Reef or Rock of Gibraltar

23 Saturday

North Yorkshire could be well represented in the G2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes, with impressive winner, Reciprocated, the pick of the entries for Karl Burke. He remains unbeaten in two starts and would likely take a lot of stopping. There could be a bit of American flare, with Outfielder holding an entry for Wesley Ward. He was an emphatic winner on his only start Charlie Appleby has won two of the last ten renewals, so keep tabs on Maximised and Wise Approach.

Things to do: Earn a place in the folklore of the Knavesmire - you’ve got two shots this year!

That is the honour that awaits the victor of one of the toughest flat handicaps in the world and one of the richest in Europe, the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor. The beauty of a handicap is that you can make a case for all twenty-two who finally make the stalls, never mind the full entry list. So, which to mention; Sky Bet Race To The Ebor winners seem a logical place to start. Tabletalk has gone up in the weights considerably since his win here last year. Jorvik winner Almosh’her will be hoping to bounce back from his Royal Ascot disappointment. Curragh victor Mr Percy is an interesting proposition, while Al Qareem may just be handicapped out of contention. Whoever wins, they can look forward to a warmer November than is on offer in Yorkshire, as the Sky Bet Ebor winner now has a guaranteed start in the Lexus Melbourne Cup.

Folkore also awaits the first ever winner of the now Group One Sky Bet City Of York Stakes. Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes winner Lazzat makes plenty of appeal for Wathnan racing if stepping up in trip, while three time Group One winner Rosallion may well step down a furlong to run here. Charlie Maranoa, recently acquired by the Bond Thoroughbreds could make a homecoming raid after a second in Group One company in France.

Hopefully the above sets the scene for a twenty eight race festival where £100,000 is the lowest prize fund and the richest maiden race in the land, the British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes, or the richest nursery handicap in the Sky Bet Stakes, add to the cocktail of high fashion and high class sport.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 5f

Race Type: Listed

Prize Money: £70,000

Age: 3+

Stalls: Centre

The John Smith’s City Walls is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed (like this one), Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1.

At first principle, horses in such contests compete off a level weight, there is no handicap in operation. However, there are weight adjustments made for age though now three-year-old colts run today, as well as for sex; meaning Rosy Affair & Miss Attitude start with less than the boys, and that Star of Mehmas gets further help on them. As the entire field is looking to open their account at this high level, there are no further adjustments.

If that is too brain-frying or you need someone to blame? Look at the Press Selections Board near the Winners Enclosure.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Although only victorious once so far this season, JM JUNGLE has undoubtedly been on an upward curve and looks to be well worth his place at this level. He seldom runs poorly on the Knavesmire and might prove up to the task following another fine second over C&D. Grand Grey and Washington Heights both contested Group 1 sprints at the Royal meeting last month and must be respected, while Star Of Mehmas continues to run well at this level and she could be thereabouts too.

A WINTER’S TALE:

WHAT IS NEW AT YORK THIS SEASON?

NEXT GENERATION CANOPIES CHAMPAGNE LAWNS

Nine next generation canopies now stand proudly on the Champagne Lawns. Clever enough to let the grass grow beneath them, they should prove popular if we get a summer shower. For the October racedays the built-in heaters will allow racegoers to keep enjoying the fresh air Each one has a speaker, so the race commentary will come to your table

BUSTARDTHORPE END

SOUTHERN END DEVELOPMENT

Last August we were honoured when Her Majesty The Queen, our Royal Patron, opened this development to the South of the Knavesmire Stand. Check out the Churchill Tyres lawn & canopy, the Theakston and Guinness bars, as well as food outlets and a WIlliam Hill shop

MR MOWITALL

Joining the grounds team over winter were a trio of robotic mowers, one creatively named, Mr Mowitall. They are helping with the lawns and car parks, leaving the human talent better able to focus on the track itself

THE TEAM NEVER REST

Maintenance is key, if a little dull. Over 6,000 pints of paint have been used by the team this winter and the Knavesmire Stand Roof has had extensive repairs, (it is nearly thirty years old!).

A LIVING FLOWER WALL

OPPOSITE THE MELROSE STAND

The flowers are petunia and petchoa, grown by Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty and his team, from seedlings in our greenhouses. That Insta moment now has real flowers behind it.

THE

BARS HAVE IT

Over the Winter a number of bars have been given a face-lift. There is a new Pink Gin & Cocktail Bar on the main Champagne Lawns, a second Guinness Bar near the Roberto Lawn, with a refreshed Kylie Minogue Wines Bar next door The fun murals from the Dublin based brand should make a good selfie

NEW ON THE MENU

Around the racecourse there are a lot of new choices. Perhaps the sweet treats of the Churros will follow your Nachos, both are now part of the Knavesmire Courtyard offering.

If you like spice, then the eateries on the ground floors of both the Knavesmire and Ebor Stands now serve our homemade Curry Club dishes.

John Smith’s Cup FACT FILE:

Distance 1m 2f 56y

Prize money £200,000

The John Smith’s Cup has been sponsored by John Smith’s Brewery since its inauguration in 1960, making it the longest running commercial sponsorship in flat racing.

WHAT WAS THE LARGEST FIELD?

The supersize stalls purchased in 2019 means a field of 22 today The smallest came in 1969 & 1982 when only six participants lined up

HAVE THERE BEEN ANY MULTIPLE WINNERS?

Prominent (‘71 & ‘72) and Chaumiere (‘85 & ‘86). Prominent was also third twice. Five others have won the race and been placed: Town And Country, Halkopous, Mr Confusion, Pasternak & Flying Clarets.

DOES SEX MATTER?

Yes, as only one mare, Flying Clarets (‘08), has won the race since Nortia was victorious in only the third running of the race

This year none of the opposite sex will line up

IS AGE IMPORTANT?

Most definitely Only 6 six-year-olds and over have been successful - Raccolto (‘63), Farm Walk (‘68), My Swanee (‘69), Educate (‘16), Johnny Drama (21) and 2023 winner, Pride of America, maybe the tide is turning? 2020 winner, Sinjaari, 2017’s victor, Ballet Concert, 2022 winner Anmaat and last year’s winner Enfjaar returned to trend by boosting the 4-y-o total, while the 2018 & 2019 winners, Euchen Glen and Pivoine, struck blows for the five-year-olds. Since 1978 the breakdown is as follows:

Three-year-olds - 14 (two dead-heated in 1987!)

Four-year-olds - 20

Five-year-olds - 11

Six-year-olds - 6

Seven-year-olds - 1

Flying Clarets

LEADING TRAINERS?

Major Dick Hern won the race 6 times with Proud Chieftain, Nortia, Bold Pirate, Town And Country, Bedtime and Straight Man. Of the current crop of trainers Richard Fahey leads the way with three previous victories but the Musley Bank maestro is not represented this year William Haggas matched him after Sinjaari’s win behind closed doors in 2020, adding to Green Destiny in ‘11 and Danchai in ‘13 - Archivist flies the Somerville Lodge flag today.

LEADING RIDER?

Geoff Baxter, Willie Carson and Tony Ives have each won the race three times but all are a longtime retired. Kevin Stott (Anmaat, 2022) and Rob Hornby (Piovine, 2019) have both ridden winners and today could add to that tally with Naqeeb and Ancient Rome respectively

LONGEST WINNING DISTANCE?

Halkopous won by 7 lengths in 1991. The shortest followed a dead-heat between Brave Dancer and Wolsey in 1987. Both horses finished second but were placed first in the Stewards’ Room when Knockando was demoted due to interference.

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?

John Smith’s, based in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire has been the highest selling ale brand in the UK since the mid-1990s. John Smith’s Extra Smooth and Original are produced at Tadcaster, as well as a range of Heineken products including Kronenbourg 1664 and Newcastle Brown Ale. With a 3.8 million hectolitre capacity, the brewery is one of the largest in the country

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?

Quite well in the early years of the millennium. Richard Fahey has won it three times (Vintage Premium (02), Charlie Tokyo (07) & Flying Clarets (08)) whilst David Barron (Sirvino (09)) and Karl Burke (Achilles (99)) have also added to the tally After a lean decade, Yorkshire is well represented in this year’s contest, with Ed Bethell, Karl Burke, Julie Camacho, Adrian Keatley, Richard Fahey, Tim Easterby and Charlie Johnston all saddling a runner in a bid for the 66th John Smith’s Cup

RaceiQ Par Time: 2m 9.37s

(Based on going description: Good to firm (good in places))

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

Leading course trainer (20-25): W Haggas (37 wins from 223 runners, 17%) runs ARCHIVIST

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): A Balding (18 wins from 66 runners, 27%) runs FOX LEGACY

Weightwatcher: AUSTRIAN THEORY won off a handicap mark of 91, his rating is now down 5lb to 86.

Fancy That: A Balding won this race in 2019 and 2021. The stable runs FOX LEGACY today.

Longest Traveller: FAYLAQ trained by J Goldie, Glasgow, 219 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 10th July

KNAVESMIRE TIP

ROMIEU looked desperately unfortunate not to win at Newcastle recently, having been denied a clear run for much of the final two furlongs. He kept on into second and is very interesting from an unchanged mark, especially with talented apprentice Elizabeth Gale booked to ride. Archivist made a successful start to his handicap career over the mile here a fortnight ago so appeals under the penalty. C&D winner Thunder Run isn’t berthed favourably but he can’t be underestimated, while others to note include See That Storm and Ancient Rome

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 1m 6f

Race Type: Group Three

Prize Money: £85,000

Age: 4+

Stalls: Inside Rail

Our fourth race flips back to those Pattern conditions, this time it is actually a step higher up in quality, being a Group 3. This race is open to 4yo+ horses and is over a trip of 1 mile 6 furlongs. All that complicated stuff about reductions for being a filly or a penalty for having won at a good level still apply, only this year the field have made it easier for us by all being male and none having recently recorded a W at this level.

Remember the winner because previous victors have gone on to contest Australia’s best-known race, the Lexus Melbourne Cup, with all of them today entered in the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor, set for Saturday 23rd August.

Need some help? Look further for the letter “C”, which shows that the horse has won at York or “D” which denotes a win over this distance, Al Qareem has both initials.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Al Qareem was an impressive winner of the Grand Cup over C&D a month ago and Karl Burke’s gelding has to be respected once again. That said, marginal preference is for TABLETALK, who remains unexposed over this sort of trip and won the Melrose at this venue last season. He was far from disgraced in the Hardwicke last time and will find this easier. Samui and Subsequent are others to consider

KNAVESMIRE TIP

GOING COMMANDO finished a respectable sixth here before posting a better effort when second in novice company at Chester. The winner of that race is now rated 90, so Adrian Keatley’s charge looks potentially well treated for this handicap debut. Amazing Journey took a step forward to land a novice race at Chepstow and there should be more to come from him, while No Spritz No Party is another going the right way after winning a maiden at Pontefract.

Those ticklish handicaps to solve keep acoming, this is over the longest distance of the day, some 2miles. As stamina is required, it is perhaps no surprise that the majority of the field are that bit older and so a little better known to punters and bookies alike. Will a four-year-old such as Curran bowl them over today?

Curran failed in his attempt to complete a hat-trick at Chester last month, but he still finished a fair third and isn’t ruled out. The eight-year-old returned to winning ways at Lingfield and is just 2lb higher, so she may be capable of completing a double

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Filly One flew out of the gates and stormed clear to score by just over four lengths at Southwell. Provided the four-year-old transfers that form to turf, she ought to have a say but ABERAMA GOLD bounced back to form when making the frame at Ayr on Monday and lurks on an appealing rating. The eight-year-old has two previous C&D triumphs to his name and could be the way to go Manila Scouse and Juan Les Pins are a couple of others to consider
