THURSDAY MAY 16TH

As one of the largest suppliers of horse feeds, bedding and supplements in the GCC region, Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai aim to make available premium products gathered from across the globe, at a competitive price.

We are once again absolutely delighted to support to the Chairman, Bridget Guerin and York Race Committee Members for what we hope will be another superb season.

We are thrilled to once again, to proudly sponsor the Gr2 Middleton Stakes, the Gr2 Dante Stakes and also the wonderful Gr2 Gimcrack Stakes. We are also pleased to continue to invest in the Owners and Trainers facilities, assisting York with maintaining those high standards.

We wish all Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable-staff the very best of luck here at York and we all look forward to some terrific racing on The Knavesmire throughout the season.

A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire for the second day of our season, one of twelve new Premier Racedays. Since we last raced, we are all honoured that Her Majesty The Queen has agreed to become the Royal Patron of York Racecourse

York Racecourse is committed to attracting the best horses to race for us all to enjoy. As an indication of this commitment, prize money over the three days of the Dante Festival is over £1.5m, representing a six-figure increase on last year, with every race worth £25,000 or more. Both the Pattern race (Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes) and the feature handicap (the Oakmere Homes Hambleton Stakes) have had further boosts from already record levels. Let’s hope we see a similar quality of winners to last year when star horses like Free Wind who returns to defend her Group Two title and Continuous who ran third in the Dante before winning the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur and Betfred St Leger With a record of near £600,000 in prize money on offer for today’s card, the stage is set to enjoy some wonderful racing. If you need help finding the winner, then try the “SmartView” version of the form on page 57, by kind courtesy of the Racing Post

Talking of racecards, a new simplified racecard which is in development as part of the Premier Raceday initiative, is being trialled here today and kindly supported by Timeform and Flutter. Please visit the Racecourse Office, if you’d like a copy.

Both Group 2 contests today are backed by Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai, so it is a special pleasure to welcome Malih Al Basti and his guests to the course to enjoy them with us. With prize money for the Dante at £180,000 it is the richest race of its type in Britain. After the success of Desert Crown in 2022, some eleven colts have already gone on from winning on the Knavesmire to claim the Epsom prize. There have now been 78 Derbys since Dante himself last won the blue riband for the north under the care of Matt Peacock in Middleham – today we will find out if Caviar Heights might follow in his hoofprints, hailing from Karl Burke’s Spigot Lodge yard All would be entering an open Derby betting market currently featuring a number of contenders from Aidan O’Brien’s County Tipperary yard, he’ll be hoping that Cambridge joins that band today.

Notebooks or iPad to the ready wherever you look today as seven elite thoroughbreds undertake the richest ever staging of the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, Middleton and the aspiring three-year-old sprinters lock horns in what is the Listed British EBF Westow Stakes. What a pleasure it is to welcome back local Breeders’ Cup hero, Big Evs, to the Knavesmire.

All that before we mention a potential record-breaker in our opening race If Copper Knight comes into the Winner’s Enclosure to meet connections, it will be for the eighth time, so would further confirm him as the “winning most” horse on the Knavesmire.

This prize money can only be achieved through the support of racegoers and of our sponsors. Many thanks to Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai, Oakmere Homes, Collective Green Energy, Lindum York, Frank Whittle Partnership and the European Breeders’ Fund, for their valuable backing.

The team have been busy preparing for your return, the Roberto Pavilion with its fast-serve bar is phase one of the Southern End Development (see pages 44-45), complete with a Yorkshire fish&chip shop, with the rest on track for delivery by the Sky Bet Ebor Festival. Our special thanks to first race sponsor, Lindum York, as the lead contractor on the project.

Equine ambassador to the Knavesmire, Remy (aka Goldream when successful on the track), is back with us; do go and say hello to him and the team from New Beginnings.

This week Racing Welfare are leading the sport through Mental Health Awareness Week, we are proud to play our part. The “sunflower” benches spread around the course offer a chance for a quiet moment of reflection.

I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful Dante day.

A TROPHY TO DISPLAY

Arguably the most coveted piece of silverware in Flat racing, the Derby trophy was specially commissioned by Epsom Downs Racecourse as a perpetual memento for the owner of the winning horse.

Containing the names of past winners dating back to the inaugural running of The Derby in 1780, including the eleven who also won the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes, the trophy was created by equine sculptor Charlie Langton and inspired by the unique undulations of Epsom Downs. Three silver horses are depicted galloping over a sweeping, circular base, Langton having drawn the idea from watching the horses descend through Tattenham Corner.

The Betfred Derby is regarded in some quarters, as ‘the greatest Flat race in the world’ and is one of five British Classics, alongside the Qipco 1000 and 2000 Guineas, The Betfred Oaks and The Betfred St Leger. It is a race that has had an enormous impact on the Thoroughbred breed, with the bloodlines of many of the most successful racehorses in history established from its winners.

The trophy is on display on the Edwardian Weighing Room Lawn.

YESTERDAYS RACING CTION

THE 1895 DUKE OF YORK CLIPPER STAKES (GROUP 2)

In a frantic finish, Mill Stream just got the better of Shouldvebeenaring to take the first Group Two of the York season.

Art Power broke well to take them along at a frantic pace, as is often the way in these sprints. The Group One winner took them along for much of the contest but coming down to the business end he became vulnerable to his rivals.

Washington Heights was the first to storm into the lead from Art Power.

Tom Eaves looked to have the race within his grasp until the last half a furlong, when he was also reeled in.

Diligent Harry drew up alongside his rival and as the camera panned toward the line, so did Shouldvebeenaring as well as Mill Stream, who stuck out his bay head in the shadows of the post.

Despite the bunched finish, it boiled down to a photo between Shouldvebeenaring and Mill Stream and much to the delight Jane Chapple-Hyam and punters alike, Mill Stream was called the winner by the judge.

He had previously finish second to Washington Heights in the Group Three Abernant, so had taken a marked step forward to reverse the form with that rival. Shouldvebeenaring lost very little in defeat after keeping on gallantly under Sean Levey and had the line come a fraction earlier, they may well have been called the winner.

Diligent Harry ended up claiming third, while Washington Heights settled for fourth spot. A rallying Art Power kept on for fifth but this was all about the excellent Mill Stream and William Buick.

THE TATTERSALLS MUSIDORA STAKES (GROUP 3)

Secret Satire sprung a bit of a surprise under Oisin Murphy to land the Tattersalls Musidora for Andrew Balding.

La Pasionaria set out in front under Hector Crouch and looked to set fairly steady fractions out in front. Hot favourite Friendly Soul didn’t look to be the most straightforward for jockey Kieran Shoemark with the filly looking to be keen in the early stages.

The order remained unchanged for much of the contest and turning for home, Hector Crouch began to up the pace on the front runner.

Francophone sat just in behind the leader and was pushed up to challenge Hector Crouch’s mount three furlongs out. While she went on her outside, Oisin Murphy darted to her inside on Secret Satire, with the pair laying down a stern challenge on the long time leader.

Both Mayfair and Friendly Soul failed to land a blow and so it was left to trainers Andrew Balding and Charlie Johnston to battle it out to the line with their respective fillies’.

The Kingsclere representative was getting the better of the argument as they came inside the final furlong, pulling further clear to score by two lengths. Francophone was forced to settle for second while a fast finishing Classical Song under Rossa Ryan eventually claimed third.

Straight after the race Oisin Murphy hinted that she could go to Epsom, where she received quotes of 12/1 from Sky Bet but at this stage it’s anyones guess as to where she goes next!

RESULT 1st Mill Stream 4/1JF 2nd Shouldvebeenaring 12/1 3rd Diligent Harry 17/2
RESULT 1st Secret Satire 22/1 2nd Francophone 16/1 3rd Classical Song 9/2 11

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there accessible and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

Can I bring my assistance dog?

Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome. There was one more thing?

Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

Examples of viewing platforms both around the Parade Ring and trackside

2. If you’ve managed to guess who I am, can you name the man who trained me? As well as my owner, who incidentally also bred me.

3. Earlier I mentioned that I’d won five Group One’s, which included the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante, for all you keen minds out there, can you name the other four. If you’re struggling, one came in France and another came in Ireland!

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Racing Post Standard Times

is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.

A WINTER’S TALE:

WHAT IS NEW AT YORK THIS SEASON?

A LOT OF WORK HAS GONE INTO THE SOUTHERN END DEVELOPMENT (SEE P44-45), HOWEVER THE RACECOURSE TEAMS HAVE BEEN BUSY ELSEWHERE…..

WINE & CHEESE BAR

EDWARDIAN WEIGHING ROOM

Since 2015, this one-time hub of the racing operation has been a popular destination for racegoers who want to combine a little nostalgia with their drinks. This winter, a Wine & Cheese Bar has been added. Speaking about the new treats, the head of our food operation, Kevin Pinnington said: “People were always telling me how much they liked the old wine & cheese cellar, then doing our stock take, I realised we had some really lovely wines that were effectively bin-ends because we didn’t have enough bottles to offer them on the main wine list. So, this new bar is a bit of a “back to the future” as it’s a way to let County Stand badgeholders try them by the glass, combined with some traditional favourites. Add in a selection of carefully chosen Yorkshire cheeses plus some cold meats and we hope people will enjoy it.”

KNAVESMIRE STAND

The high class action on the track is clearly seen from the steppings and boxes of this stand, however the PA system was showing its age. A major investment should mean that the commentators can now better add to the drama and let you know what price your winning bets were returned at As with any new technology, it might take a few meetings to settle in, so please help us by sharing your experience with the team on the ground.

22

ALCOVES BAR

GIMCRACK STAND

Another County Stand area, that once discovered is much loved, has benefited from a winter refurbishment. Lighter and brighter, check out the extended range of Tanqueray gins, offered with premium Schweppes tonics.

MULTIPLE BARS

The new Bar in the Roberto Pavilion should speed up drinks service in that area but we’ve also added even more fast tills, there are nearly 250 around the site. Not to mention thirty new under the bar fridges.

OUT OF SIGHT:

Every winter a whole host of “out of sight work” is completed. The investment in these infrastructure projects keeps the racecourse functioning on the busy days This year the pumps in the Ebor Stand were replaced and drainage works undertaken outside the Gimcrack Stand.

About a mile from the track is the working home of Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty A regular winner of Yorkshire in Bloom Awards, the Victorian Greenhouse has benefited from major refurbishment.

COPPER KNIGHT: WINNING-MOST

EYES ON OUR FIRST RACE WHEN COPPER KNIGHT, HOPES TO RECORD WIN NUMBER EIGHT.

The Denham family first ran Copper Knight at York back in 2017 when he won the first of his seven races. It was an assertive performance over then stable mate Rasheeq and was very much a sign of things to come. He had further success at York before taking his most prestigious prize at the track. The John Smith’s City Walls Stakes 2019, his first Listed success. His superb seventh victory came back in July.

A plaque has been erected in his honour on the pre-parade ring side of the weighing room, where it reads ‘winning most’, as he may well not be done with winning at York just yet!

Last July Copper Knight made history by registering another win on the Knavesmire. He remains a stalwart of Tim Easterby’s operation, with a record breaking seven wins, will Copper Knight continue to make history with an eighth win today.

Day Two begins with a handicap. Such races are designed for close competition with the handicapper as the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.

The best on past performance will be the highest rated horse, Korker here and so will carry most weight.

So, pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, see how Copper Knight (who claims a record seven “c”s) is just one of this field to have both. Good luck in starting with a winner!

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS

THE TALE OF THE CLOCK

Racing Post Standard Time: 57.40s

Course Record: 55.90s by Battaash (23-Aug-19)

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

Leading course trainer (19-24): R Fahey (30 wins from 449 runners, 7%) runs MARINE WAVE Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): D O’Meara (9 wins from 47 runners, 19%) runs ALLIGATOR ALLEY

Weightwatcher: COPPER KNIGHT won off a handicap mark of 97, his rating is now down 16lb to 81.

Fancy That: T Easterby won this race in 2019 and 2021. The stable runs COPPER KNIGHT and COUNT D’ORSAY today.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 14th May.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

In a wide-open event, marginal preference is for MARINE WAVE, who is back on the same mark as her close-up third over C&D last August. She had a pipe-opener at Musselburgh last month and might have more to offer given she’s a lightly-raced four-year-old who kept pretty good company for the majority of last year. Clarendon House was not beaten far at all last time at Goodwood and cannot be discounted off a 2lb lower mark, while Korker is just one other with strong form claims.

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS

THE TALE OF THE CLOCK

Racing Post Standard Time: 1m 35.60s

Course Record: 1m 34.35s by Croupier (18-May-23)

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

Leading course trainer (19-24): W Haggas (38 wins from 207 runners, 18%) runs AL MUBHIR

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): D O’Meara (9 wins from 47 runners, 19%) runs BLUE FOR YOU and BOPEDRO and MIRSKY

Weightwatcher: CRUYFF TURN won off a handicap mark of 97, his rating is now down 9lb to 88.

Longest Traveller: GREY’S MONUMENT trained by R Beckett, Kimpton Down, 251 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 14th May.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

BLUE FOR YOU is only 1lb higher than winning over course and distance last July and he was a respectable fifth in this race 12 months ago when rated 2lb above his current figure. With that in mind, the six-year-old merits plenty of respect having had a wind operation since his last appearance. Recent Spring Cup winner Metal Merchant has to be of interest once again, while Dutch Decoy and Navagio are the pick of the remainder

RACING

THE PLAN IS ON TRACK

Southern End Development

Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the focus being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand.

As you can see a multi-million pound project to improve this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers is already well underway

The Roberto Pavilion is open for this meeting, providing a fast - serve bar, a fish & chip shop and a cocktail/Pimms bar Plus, tote & Willliam Hill outlets.

By the time of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival in August, the Churchill Tyres Lawn and Canopy will be a great spot to relax and enjoy the food outlets and improved Theakston Bar that will flank it. A state of the art William Hill betting shop will reopen, with a new block of toilets.

In keeping with the Green Knavesmire 300 commitment, a host of sustainability features have been embedded; a living roof, rainwater harvesting and solar panels being examples. That is why there are a few changes to the Southern End today. If you are looking for a pint of Ebor IPA, you can now find it on the Dayjur Bar on the mezzanine floor of the Knavesmire Stand.

Architect impressions of the planned improvements 44

THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:

• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing steppings, open for use today.

• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Pavilion that includes a fast- serve bar, a fish & chip shop as well as a Pimms/Cocktail bar. Open for use today.

• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston Bar and William Hill betting shop.

• Creating two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.

• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.

• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates that remember owner-breeder, Reg Bond and improved accessibility

• Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and sustainable water provision, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge.

INTRODUCTION

The Group Two Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes has a rich tradition of attracting the very best older middle-distance fillies and mares from across Europe. The roll of honour includes the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud winner, Coronet.

BETTING

It is safe to say that this isn’t a race in which taking a chance on an outsider has proved successful. In the last ten years, there have been five winning favourites and only one horse has won the race at a double figure price.

TRAINERS

Since the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton was first run in 1981, its prestige has increased from Listed status to Group 2 and therefore it may be unfair to group past winners into the same category. However, Sir Michael Stoute holds the best record in the race overall with seven winners. John Gosden has an excellent record in recent years, saddling last years winner, the first since he took out a joint license with son Thady.

RECENT FORM

It is worth nothing that 5/11 winners had at least one run previously this season but only one of those eleven had previous wins that season. So although it is a marginal benefit to have had a run this season, there is no suggestion that a win improves a horses chances.

OFFICIAL RATING

Again, it isn’t entirely straightforward when it comes to the official ratings of the past winners because as the race has grown in stature so has the calibre of its runners Last year’s winner was rated 115 and it pays to follow those at the top of the ratings, see Free Wind as the highest rated at 114.

KEY TRENDS

Top two in the market

Aged four or five Previous Group winner

CONCLUSION

Free Wind returns to try and defend her crown, after last year’s impressive triumph. Partnered this year by Kieran Shoemark, she is prominent in the betting but didn’t quite kick on last year after winning this, so may be worth opposing. Bluestocking is the second highest rated despite only winning one race. She’s finished placed in multiple Group races and may well have trained on as a four-year-old. The one worth chancing here could be INFINITE COSMOS for record holding Sir Michael Stoute. She was beaten in the Tattersalls Musidora 12 months ago by subsequent Epsom Oaks winner Soul Sister. Sir Michael’s have a tendency to train on and she looks to have a good chance here.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 1m 2f

Race Type: Group Two

Prize Money: £150,000

The Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes over one mile two furlongs is towards the pinnacle of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, it forms part of the second of four categories; Listed, Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1.

This race is restricted to 4yo plus fillies and mares Given its Pattern prestige, it is part of a broader strategy to keep such horses racing rather than connections choosing to retire them for breeding.

Ed Chamberlain and the team from ITV will be having a close at them in the Parade Ring, so why not join them.

Fancy That: J & T Gosden won this race in 2018, 2019 and 2023. The stable runs FREE WIND today. Longest Traveller: BLUESTOCKING trained by R Beckett, Kimpton Down, 251 miles. NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 14th May.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

FREE WIND won a top-class renewal of this contest 12 months ago and while she failed to get on the scoresheet again subsequently, she was only beaten a head in the Yorkshire Oaks. A reproduction of either of those efforts here would give the daughter of Galileo an outstanding chance. Bluestocking was a consistent performer throughout last year, going close in a couple of Group 1s, and is likely to be in the mix once again. Cases can be made for all of the remainder, but Sapphire Seas is the pick of them.

DANTE: THE HOPE OF THE NORTH

Foaled on March 7, 1942, he was by Nearco out of Rosy Legend and an inauspicious visit to the ring saw him fail to make his 3,500 gns reserve, and no buyer responded to a sale by public advertisement. So he was put into training with Matt Peacock by his owner, Sir Eric Ohlson.

Dante enjoyed a blemish-free juvenile season, a winning debut at Stockton in April and five further successes including the Coventry Stakes and Middle Park Stakes.

Come 1945, a successful pipe opener and he was aimed at the 2000 Guineas but preparations were interrupted when the horse’s left eye clouded over just before the first classic. Consequently sent to Newmarket short of gallop, Dante experienced his first defeat when Lord Astor’s Court Martial got the better of him by a neck. Some onlookers felt that had the challenge come on Dante’s right, he would have responded quicker.

Legendary punter and founder of Timeform, Phil Bull, was not deterred and as the Middleham star drifted to 10/1, he went into the ring, backing Dante to win £14,000!

52
Matt Peacock Dante wins the Derby, June 1945

Due to WWII the 1945 Derby was run at Newmarket’s July Course. Dante was set to reoppose Court Martial. Meyrick Good, writing in the Sporting Life commented “I expect to see Dante, Midas, and Court Martial draw away from the field and for the winner I select Dante.”

It was to prove an inspired summary as Dante became Middleham’s first Derby winner since Pretender won the 1869 renewal. Midas finished second, with Court Martial in third.

His victory was celebrated in Middleham, where the church bells toiled, a Dante Ball held and winning jockey Nevett carried shoulder-high through the streets.

Dante was then targeted for the St Leger, to be run here on the Knavesmire that September, he was rated an even-money favourite. However, rumours were that all was not well and they proved correct as on August 25 he was withdrawn. Chamossaire, won at York in his absence.

The records show that the eye problems which had blighted the challenge for the 2000 Guineas had returned and indeed worsened. Dante was virtually blind in both eyes and so retired to stand at Theakston Stud, Bedale.

Dante had a successful if comparatively brief stud career. Among his high-class winners were Darius (2000 Guineas and Eclipse Stakes), Carrozza (Oaks), and Discorea (Irish Oaks). This great horse died at Theakston in 1956. In all, Dante won eight of his nine starts.

Dante remains the last Middleham, indeed last northern trained, horse to win the Derby. The success of Permian from Mark Johnston’s Stable in the town in the 2017 Dante as well as the presence of Caviar Heights for Karl Burke from across the town, today offers encouragement that a new chapter in the sporting history of Middleham is being written.

So Dante was reared in Yorkshire – lived there all his life – and retired to stud at Theakston Stud, Bedale.

NOT A FINAL TOTAL… SUPPLEMENTARY ENTRIES WHEN IS A T TAL PRIZE FUND

The Total Prize Fund is the total amount of money that the horses in a race are competing for and to be split between the winner and the placed horses.

The split of prize money between the podium horses and then between the owner, trainer, jockeys and stable is subject to a fairly complicated formula However in outline the winning owner receives 441/2%, trainer 51/2%, jockey 4% and stable 21/2%. You can see further details of the split between horses on the page called “Race Conditions” near the back of this racecard.

The prize money on offer at the Dante Festival is set to attract the very best horses this week. It is funded from several sources; the racecourse itself, the sponsors, the levy board and the entry fees paid by the owners –sometimes referred to as the “Stake” hence the term “Stakes”.

For the major races there are a series of entry dates whereby connections will decide to enter the race and then whether to stay in the race as the performance of the horse and plans for it unfold.

For most Group races, the horses would usually be entered with quite a while to go before the raceday, for example the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes closed for original entries on April 2nd.

However, there is a late “supplementary entry” stage six days before the race. This is designed to allow a horse that may be a late developer or whose plans have changed to take their chance. The supplementary entry fee is set at a higher level than the normal entry route so it takes a bold move by the owners.

If you think about it terms of playing poker, the connections of a late entrant have a better idea of their opposition so pay a premium.

In a real example, to explain the numbers today, the total prize fund for The Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes have risen because of one supplementary entry, with Cambridge joining the Dante, who will race in the Coolmore colours.

The colt, has been given a chance to improve on his placing in the Craven Stakes last month. At this stage in the career of a thoroughbred, a month more in the care of a maestro like Aidan O’Brien, can make a world of difference

FIRST WINNER?

Bald Eagle justified favouritism in 1958 for Newmarket trainer Sir Cecil Boyd-Rochfort and his jockey Harry Carr

After sealing glory here in 2014 The Grey Gatsby landed the Prix du Jockey Club (or French Derby) at Chantilly The following year saw Jack Hobbs second on the Knavesmire, but a Classic winner at the Curragh, with Hurricane Lane, the 2021 winner at York, following in his classic footsteps when winning the St Leger Why

Simples - since 1958, eleven York winners have won at Epsom; St Paddy (1960), Shirley Heights (1978), Shahrastani (1986), Reference Point (1987), Erhaab (1994), Benny The Dip (1997), North Light (2004), Motivator (2005), Authorized (2007), Golden Horn (2015) & Desert Crown (2022).

They drew a blank in the first 40 years and all bar Aidan O’Brien, still have; the Ballydoyle maestro scored with Saratoga Springs (1998), Septimus (2006), Black Bear Island (2009) then Cape Blanco (2010). The honour of the Emerald Isle rests on the shoulders of the supplemented Cambridge for Aidan O’Brien.

LUCK OF THE IRISH?

ANY NEAR MISSES?

Rheingold was beaten just inches by Roberto in 1972 and the Millennium winner Sakhee was only 150 yards from Derby victory before being headed late on by Sinndar The 2008 renewal saw Tartan Bearer go down by just half a length to New Approach and Libertarian was fast finishing for his runners up berth.

LEADING TRAINERS?

The late Sir Henry Cecil holds the record for having won this race seven times – Approval (1970), Lyphard’s Wish (1979), Hello Gorgeous (1980), Simply Great (1982), Claude Monet (1984), Reference Point (1987) and Tenby (1993). Sir Michael Stoute reduced the deficit by one with Desert Crown and in doing so picked up his fifth win, with him absent today, it is Clarehaven who could move up the leaderboard should God’s Window oblige to give the yard a fifth win.

LEADING RIDER?

The late Pat Eddery managed six wins whilst Ryan Moore has the joint best record of the current crop with three, today partnering Cambridge

William Buick has also ridden three winners and today rides Ancient Wisdom.

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?

Established in the year 1998, Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai has, within a short span of time, become the pioneers in equine industry to Middle East and expanded across the globe They have always recommended and introduced the best quality natural products which have had a very good response from the industry and are the distributors for leading companies such as Baileys Horse Feeds and Foran Equine Products.

How do local trainers fare?

Poorly, until the turn of this decade However, Libertarian broke the County’s duck for trainer Elaine Burke in 2013. The Grey Gatsby made it two in a row for the White Rose courtesy of Hambleton based Kevin Ryan in 2014.

It was back to winning ways in 2017, when the Mark Johnston trained Permian prevailed and Thunderous gave the yard a third success in 2020

This year only Karl Burke, based at Leyburn, flies the flag with Caviar Heights.

INTRODUCTION

Arguably the leading trial for next month’s Betfred Derby is this afternoon’s Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes and it is usually won by a very smart middle-distance performer

The roll of honour includes North Light (2004), Motivator (2005), Authorized (2007), Golden Horn (2015) & Desert Crown (2022) who have all followed up at Epsom having won here. Roaring Lion went onto win four Group 1’s and 2021 champion Hurricane Lane won the St Leger, so it’s a good guide for the season!

BETTING

It looks as though there may be a bit of a resurgence of those toward the front of the betting. Hurricane Lane obliged at 5/1 while Desert Crown was sent off 7/2JF. Previously those at a slightly bigger price had been the way to go, Libertarian caused a major shock when landing the spoils at 33/1 back in 2013 but he is the only victor in those last ten years to have gone off bigger than 12/1.

TRAINERS

Of the trainers with runners this afternoon, John Gosden has the best record having saddled four winners, his most recent victory coming in 2018 with Roaring Lion. However, the O’Brien yard also has a strong record with four winners so be sure to keep an eye on God’s Window and Cambridge, respectively.

CONCLUSION

JUVENILE FORM

Only a handful of the previous winners had Pattern form as a two-year-old so perhaps proven form at this level is not as important as it once was. However, despite Telecaster winning this race in 2019, he was only the third winner in the last decade who did not run as a two-year-old, which suggests that the later maturing types tend to struggle in this contest.

RECENT FORM

Contesting a Group race as a prep run for this race often pays dividends – a pattern worth bearing in mind when going through this year’s field. It also seems best to side with those arriving in form, with those who had finished in the top three and ran to form last time out favoured by the trends.

KEY TRENDS

Trained by John Gosden Group Form as two-year-old Single figure SPs

The market is likely to be dominated by the highly touted Ancient Wisdom for Charlie Appleby. He has winning Group form as a two-year-old and judging by his pedigree and running style, this trip ought to bring out the best of him. However we’ve not seen him yet this season, so maybe wait to see him in the paddock before backing him! The same is true about AL MUSMAK, who would be the marginal preference for Roger Varian and James Doyle. His second in a Group Two last year is working out well and you couldn’t help but be impressed. It promises to be another excellent renewal of the race.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Last seen winning the Futurity Trophy at Doncaster in October, ANCIENT WISDOM is likely to be a warm order and is fancied to book his Derby ticket The step up in trip is expected to elicit improvement from the son of Dubawi, although that could also be said for Al Musmak, who chased home Guineas fourth Ghostwriter in the Royal Lodge. Caviar Heights streaked clear in Listed company at Newmarket and is worth considering, along with Cambridge, who was supplemented for this contest having been far from disgraced in the Craven.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 5f

Race Type: Listed

Prize Money: £70,000

Age: 3

Stalls: Centre

This Listed race aims to give a competitive run to high quality 3yo sprinters who may struggle against their elders this early in the season in Pattern races, yet are already beyond most handicaps.

A European Breeders’ Fund race, meaning that all the horse’s sires are registered in Europe with the EBF The scheme is to encourage the best in bloodstock breeding in Europe.

If judgement of form has failed you so far today, it might be time to just try your favourite colours; it has been known to pay a dividend in such races.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

BIG EVS capped off last season with a statement success in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Santa Anita in November and Mick Appleby’s colt will be hard to beat if returning on song. Kylian finished fifth behind the selection in the Flying Childers at Doncaster when last seen and he is the main danger on his first appearance for Archie Watson. Mon Na Slieve, who performed with credit in good company last year, is most appealing of the remainder

This maiden race is dedicated to 2yo horses that have yet to win, so is again a level weights affair, save for an allowance that would have been afforded to any fillies but not contest today so we avoid that wrinkle Given this lack of experience the horses have not been awarded a handicap mark yet.

The same EBF eligibility criteria apply as for our previous race.

In tipping terms, it is a choice of the “Ps”, pedigree or pin.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Seattle is likely to attract supporters based on his 2,200,000-euro price tag alone and he holds obvious claims for his powerful connections. However, the vote goes to RARE CHANGE, who has plenty of speed in his pedigree as a son of Mehmas and, with William Buick booked, he can make a big impression on his debut. Any market confidence behind Tarlac or Loom should be noted, while Andesite is a half-brother to the stable’s high-class sprinter Dramatised.

LONDON CITY showed he has improved over the winter when returning to justify favouritism in comfortable style at Dundalk. Aidan O’Brien’s impeccably-bred Justify colt takes a further step up in trip on his handicap debut and he can defy his opening mark of 93 Per Contra, whose only defeat in four starts came when tried in a Group 3, should remain competitive off 4lb higher than for his comeback triumph at Wolverhampton.
