Sky Bet eBor FeStival 2023 featuring The Juddmonte International GROUP 1 OFFICIAL RACECARD £4.00 WEDNESDAY AUGUST 23RD

A very warm welcome to the Sky Bet Ebor Festival and the flagship race of our season – the Group 1 Juddmonte International. Today is the richest raceday we have ever hosted at over £1.8m in prize money – alongside the £1m feature, all the other six races are worth at least £100,000 This record investment in prize money has been rewarded with some wonderful horses, we are incredibly grateful that their connections have decided to bring them to the Knavesmire for us to enjoy and even try to pick out a winner.

For over thirty seasons now, our showpiece has been supported by Juddmonte, and we remain hugely appreciative of their backing. We are delighted that the late Prince Khalid Bin Abdullah is being inducted into the British Champions Series Hall of Fame, do watch the presentation in the Parade Ring ahead of the Juddmonte International, to acknowledge his legacy.

This year’s renewal looks to be fascinating with a clash of generations, distances, sexes and racing powerhouses. Between them the four contenders have amassed eighteen Pattern race victories. Carrying the Classic winning torch after his Irish 2,000 Guineas victory at The Curragh is Paddington, a colt seeking his fifth consecutive Group 1 victory in Coolmore colours. Pitted against the more experienced, Mostahdaf, on the back of Royal Ascot glory, representing the Shadwell operation. A second star from the ranks at Clarehaven stables is the only filly in the contest, Nashwa, herself a multiple Group One winner Completing the field and returning to the scene of his Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante triumph is The Foxes in the Kingpower shade of blue.

Marvellous though our feature race is, the rest of the card is also dripping with quality. The Group Two Sky Bet Great Voltigeur is a fascinating contest as well as being one that shapes the final Classic. In 2019, Logician became the 14th colt to achieve the Knavesmire-Town Moor double

Every race this week will tell a story; the opening Sky Bet and Symphony Group Stakes field of 20 over the unusual distance of five and a half furlongs includes Copper Knight bidding to add to his already record number of seven wins at York.

The Group Three Tattersalls Acomb is the first of ten Group races over these four days, a race won last year by Chaldean who progressed to take the Qipco 2000 Guineas.

The richest nursery handicap in the land, one of 13 contests this week to be backed by the headline sponsor of the Festival, Sky Bet, concludes today’s card. It will continue a pattern in the annual joust between bookie and Knavesmire regular, that will culminate in Saturday’s £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor

We have some top class racing today, made possible by both your support and the backing of our partners and sponsors.

The “World Pool Moment of the Day”, is an initiative that sees an expert panel select a highlight on each of the three weekdays The member of racing staff from the yard who looks after the horse awarded “World Pool Moment of the Day” will win £4,000 The winner will also be in with a chance of winning “World Pool Moment of the Year” which will be determined by a combination of scores derived from a public vote and a global expert panel and announced at the Hong Kong International Races at Sha Tin in December The lucky winner will receive win a VIP trip for four to Hong Kong for either the 2024 Hong Kong Derby or 2024 FWD Champions Day.

In a day full of sporting action, I hope you can find time to visit the Slater Menswear Ebor Fashion Lawn before 2.30pm, set in the picturesque surroundings of the Edwardian Weighing Room Lawn. Partners such as The 8th Sign, No1 by GuestHouse and the Hole in Wand are offering great prizes for all you stylish racegoers, plus it is great fun!

Watch the RAF skydive team arrive in style at 1.20pm, visit the Fan Zone and Goldream the retired racehorse in Clocktower Enclosure, listen out for the Shepherd Group Brass Band, dance into the evening with The Monotones, share a bottle of Mercier Champagne for just £48 a bottle, enjoy the 360-selfie camera or taking your own selfie with the Lexus Melbourne Cup or on the Frankie Trail; whatever, it is just our pleasure to welcome you and hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing and experience of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there disabled and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row.

Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

There was one more thing?

Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

2. If you’ve managed to guess me, can you name the name of my stables, clue, it’s seasonal...

3. I’ve had many stable stars including the likes of Baaeed and Addeybb, can you name how many Group Ones the above two won between them?

4. For some serious kudos, how many of Addeybb’s Group One wins came down under?

YORKS RACING CHALLENGE

1. Cast your mind back to day one of the Dante. Andrew Balding teamed up with Hayley Turner to take the first. The clue is seaside snack.

2. Frankie Dettori sprung a bit of a surprise in the Tattersalls Musidora. Train had a hit back in 2009 that should jog the memory.

3. Half an hour before, can you name the first three home in the 1895 Duke Of York Clipper Stakes. Clue, the horse in third won a Listed race at the Curragh on his next start.

4. Karl Burke had the favourite in our penultimate race but he could only manage third. He’s since gone onto win twice and is the first name of a French superstar who plays for PSG...

5. The day ended with a winner for Adrian Paul Keatley. Interestingly the translation of his runner in Maldivian is ‘Young Coconut’, Any guesses?

Answers to today’s puzzles can be found on page 92.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Racing Post Standard Times

is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.

Non-runner

Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.

Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate.

Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

HERE’S THE PLAN

Southern End Development

Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for both horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to continue to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the focus for the next capital project being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand.

A planning application has been submitted for a £5 million investment to improve this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers.

Subject to approval, work will commence following the October meeting and be open for the busy racedays in the 2024 season.

24
Architect impressions of the planned improvements

THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:

• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing stand.

• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston’s Bar and William Hill betting shop.

• Creating two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.

• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.

• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates and improved accessibility.

• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Village Bar.

• Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and rainwater harvesting, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge

EYES ON OUR FIRST WHEN COPPER KNIGHT, HOPES TO RECORD WIN NUMBER EIGHT.

The Denham family first ran Copper Knight at York back in 2017 when he won the first of his seven races. It was an assertive performance over then stable mate Rasheeq and was very much a sign of things to come.

He had further success at York before taking his most prestigious prize at the track. The John Smith’s City Walls Stakes 2019, his first Listed success. His superb seventh victory came back in July.

A plaque has been erected in his honour on the pre-parade ring side of the weighing room, where it reads ‘winning most’, as he may well not be done with winning at York just yet!

Last month Copper Knight made history by registering another win at the Knavesmire. He remains a stalwart of Tim Easterby’s operation, with a record breaking seven wins, will Copper Knight continue to make history with an eighth win today.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 5f 89y

Race Type: Heritage Handicap

Prize Money: £120,000

Age: 3+

Stalls: Centre

The first of seven races with at least a six-figure purse today, it is a competitive heritage handicap for 3yo+ horses, run over the unusual trip of five and a half furlongs.

Designed for close competition, the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best, on past performance, will be the highest rated, and so will carry the most weight – Equilateral carries the top weight today.

Listen to the Punters Panel from 1pm to hear the expert’s view.

LAST YEAR’S RACE

Winner: BERGERAC

Trainer: Kevin Ryan

Jockey: Tom Eaves

Age/Weight: 4-8-12

Runners: 22 SP: 22/1

Few got into our opener last year and it ended up being a bit of a match between Bergerac and King Of Stars. The pair raced wide apart on the track but it was the Kevin Ryan trained runner who stuck his neck out to win.

Jm Jungle has been in fine fettle and warrants respect off 5lb higher than when scoring at Glorious Goodwood last time However, preference is for EQUILATERAL, who steps into the handicap ranks. If he can reproduce anything like his King’s Stand fifth at Royal Ascot on his penultimate start, he could be the one to beat. Intrinsic Bond and Manila Scouse are both in great heart and should also be considered. EQUILATERAL

A small but select field, with all six declared runners looking to have some sort of chance. However, BALLYMOUNT BOY undoubtedly sets the standard with his second to subsequent Group 1 winner Vandeek in the Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood and he looks the one to beat stepping up from 6f for the first time. Cogitate won impressively on his debut and rates the biggest threat, while runaway Salisbury scorer Hot Fuss may go well at longer odds.

TheSkyBet GreatVoltigeurStakes FACT FILE:

WHERE DOES THE RACE NAME COME FROM?

Voltigeur was a famous Yorkshire-trained Classic winner who carried the colours of the Earl of Zetland, to victory in both the Derby at Epsom and the St Leger in 1850 The Flying Dutchman had also landed the Derby-St Leger double the previous year The so called “Great Match” between the pair was held at York the following spring, over two miles with £1,000 side stakes (a sum equivalent to £700,000 in today’s shops) and the Knavesmire was packed to bursting to see the Flying Dutchman win the money. Yet, in one of those quirks of history the battling Voltigeur won the hearts on the day and he is now remembered with this race, the 550 seat restaurant at York as well as being the horse featured in our logo

WHY IS IT AN IMPORTANT RACE?

It has long been the premier trial for the final Classic of the year and in five decades or more, the road to The Betfred St Leger fame has often started here on the Knavesmire. When 2019’s winner Logician went on to glory on Doncaster’s Town Moor he became the 14th Great Voltigeur winner to do just that.

FIRST WINNER?

The Jack Jarvis-trained Castle Rock won the inaugural race in 1950 when ridden by Bill Rickaby.

ANY OTHER SUCCESSES?

In 2009 Mastery finished runner-up to Monitor Closely but reversed the placings in the Betfred St Leger Three year’s later Encke could only finish third here, but he broke the hearts of the racing public when he defeated the Triple Crown-seeking Camelot at Doncaster. It was a similar story in 2018 as the York third, Kew Gardens, turned the tables on Old Persian in the season’s final classic.

GLORY DOWN UNDER

The Charlie Appleby-trained Cross Counter was second in this back in 2018. Some ten weeks and 10,500 miles later and the colt carried the Godolphin colours to triumph in the Lexus Melbourne Cup So becoming the first Britishtrained winner of the race that stops a nation. Last year’s winner, Deauville Legend, started as favourite at Flemington, however could not emulate the feat.

A ROYAL HICCUP...

Alleged is arguably the best Sky Bet Great Voltigeur winner not to go on to score at Doncaster. Trained by Vincent O’Brien, he went to Doncaster unbeaten in five starts and was sent off a red hot favourite, but he was beaten by Dunfermline – owned by The Late HM The Queen and ridden by Willie Carson. That was Alleged’s only defeat and he later took his revenge in the Arc in Paris, a prize he also won the following year

OTHER CLASSIC HEROES?

Before Logician’s success, Premonition won the new York race in 1953, and became the first to go on to triumph in the Betfred St Leger He was trained by Cecil Boyd-Rochfort and ridden by Harry Carr and they did it again five years later with Alcide St Paddy, Hethersett, Ragusa and Indiana all did the double in a five year period during the 1960s, while Athens Wood and Bustino added to the score in the following decade. The mighty Reference Point took the Betfred Derby as well as these two races in his fantastic career Rule of Law carried the Godolphin blue to double victory in 2004 and Lucarno was another to do the double in 2007.

50

LEADING TRAINERS?

Paddy Prendergast saddled five winners in the early years of the race, while the late Sir Henry Cecil was successful on four occasions. These totals have been surpassed by Sir Michael Stoute - having won it seven times in his career including with Telescope in 2013. John Gosden also has a terrific record in the race, winning five of the last fourteen renewals, including that of 2019, Clarehaven is represented by Gregory today. Aidan O’Brien, who has won it three times in the past 18 years, brings another fascinating angle for the Emerald Isle Idaho did the business in 2016 before unseating in incredibly unlucky fashion in the Betfred St Leger, while Kew Gardens took an eye-catching third here before winning the Doncaster Classic. Continuous represents Ballydoyle today.

LEADING

On an afternoon when racegoers can once again take a selfie with the statue of the “Long Fellow”, it is worth noting that the much missed Lester Piggott won the race on no less than nine occasions, while Frankie Dettori has the best record of the current crop of riders with seven victories to his credit. Will the fairytale farewell tour continue, courtesy of Gregory, here?

HOW DO LOCAL TRAINERS FARE?

Brioche was the first Yorkshiretrained winner when saddled for victory by Malton-based Captain Charles Elsey in 1957 But it was 45 years before we saw another Yorkshire horse score when Mark Johnston collected the prize with subsequent St Leger third, Bandari. With no runners today, another barren year for the White Rose awaits.

BIG RACE TRENDS

THE SKY BET GREAT VOLTIGEUR STAKES (GROUP 2)

PREVIOUS WINNERS - LAST TEN RUNNINGS

TRAINERS

With Sir Michael Stoute not represented in the race this year. We instead focus on Aidan O’Brien, who has three victories as well as John & Thady Gosden who have recorded two successes in the race. The latter are represented by Gregory while Continuous flies the flag for Ireland Charlie Appleby has had two winners in the race so would join Aidan O'Brien should Castle Way win.

BETTING

Six of the last 10 to win the race were favourites, with only one horse winning at double figure odds in that time frame. There is a definite bias toward those at the front of the market. Therefore pay close attention to Gregory and Continuous.

RECENT FORM

A last time out victory is not the be all and end all when looking for that elusive winner as only three of the last ten winners of this race have arrived here on the back of a success last time out. However, a solid run on their latest start offers some encouragement with all but three of the last ten winners having finished no worse than fourth on their most recent outing.

CONCLUSION

DISTANCE

Previously it had been the case that winning over 1m4f prior to the race hadn't been important. That has begun to change with Old Persian, Logician, Pyledriver, Yibir and Deauville Legend all previously winning over the trip. Therefore it could well pay to follow those with experience, Idaho was the last winner back in 2016 to have not won over further than a mile before tackling this. So there is a definite shift in the trends.

WEIGHT

Every horse is initially allotted 9st 2lb (8st 12lb until 2014) before penalties are given for previous wins at Group 1 or Group 2 level this season. Only three winners of the race have carried such penalties to victory since 1995. Gregory gives 3lb away for his Group 2 win at Royal Ascot.

KEY TRENDS

Finished in first four last time

Single-figure odds

Win over 1m4f

With the record of penalty carriers being so poor, it is best to look away from market principle Gregory. There is no denying he was very impressive in the Queen's Vase but would have to be special to win this under a penalty, even though he does have Frankie in the saddle. Castle Way looked a real stayer for Charlie Appleby and Godolphin when out battling Tower Of London in the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket. His assured stamina ought to stand him in good stead but his form doesn't read as well as a couple of his rivals. Artistic Style disappointed at Goodwood but better ground may well see him bounce back. CONTINUOUS was only narrowly beaten in the King Edward VII behind the classy King Of Steel and hails from a yard who has tasted success plenty of times. He should take some beating.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Both Continuous and Castle Way are on the upgrade and bring significant potential to the contest, with the former possibly the stronger of the pair given his troubled passage at Ascot last time However, it is very hard to get away from the claims of the unbeaten GREGORY, who has improved with each start and looks to have future Group 1 potential. He impressed when landing the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot and can take this on route to bigger targets later in the year

Described by his usual jockey Walter Swinburn as ‘the complete racehorse - the most versatile I have ever sat on’. He won the Juddmonte International Stakes (twice), the Coral Eclipse Stakes (twice) and the Prix d’Ispahan in what was a most impressive career. He retired in 1996 with the titles of Champion Older Horse in Europe for 1995 & 1996.

Described as the ‘Iron Horse’ and the epitome of toughness and determination, Giant’s Causeway won six Group 1 races and almost without exception these victories were gained in nail-biting finishes. He won the Juddmonte International Stakes by a hard faught head in a superb race, having been headed by Kalanisi in the final furlong but responding in the gamest fashion to get back up on the line. The winner of the Coral Eclipse Stakes, St James Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes, and Irish Champion Stakes, Giant’s Causeway retired as Champion 3-year-old in Europe in 2000

The warmth of his reception on coming back to the Winner’s Enclosure completed a “were you at York the day when…” memory The colt went on to complete an unbeaten Classic season with further victories in the Irish Champion Stakes and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe

Few horses have better race records than Frankel, who retired unbeaten in fourteen starts at the end of the 2012 flat season. Having landed numerous Group 1 victories including the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, Lockinge and two renewals of the Sussex Stakes, his greatest hour probably came here on the Knavesmire. The opposition was filled with top level performers such as St Nicholas Abbey and Farhh, but it proved no problem as the four-year-old scooted clear of his rivals to win in devastating fashion by seven lengths

JUDDMONTE BLOODSTOCK EROES H

Most people are familiar with the terms “thoroughbred” and “pedigree”. But did you know that the former means the horse is descended from one of just three stallions? Known as the foundation stallions, two of them performed their duties within twenty miles of York.

The Darley Arabian stood at Aldby Hall near Stamford Bridge, whilst the Byerley Turk was at Goldsborough Hall, just outside Knaresborough. The trio was completed by the Godolphin Arabian, a resident just over the county line at Longsford Hall in Derbyshire. Over the intervening three hundred years some of the blood lines have become more successful than others and this genealogy gives every horse its pedigree, or family tree.

Coming up to date and Juddmonte Farms, sponsors of today’s feature race continue the bloodstock tradition of great stallions. Established in 1977, Juddmonte Farms was set up by the late Prince Khalid bin Abdullah, who sadly passed in 2021.

On most occasions, the superstar stallions of their generation had proved themselves on the racecourse. It is easy to appreciate how the offspring of great horses such as Frankel will feel a weight of expectation on their withers. The colt formerly trained by the late Sir Henry Cecil enjoyed his finest hour at York when landing the Juddmonte International for his connections in 2012 to take his unbeaten record to thirteen. Frankel’s stallion career continues to go from strength to strength, the fastest sire to 40 Group winners in history, this year he is responsible for 29 individual stakes winners and eight Group One winner, more than any other Northern Hemisphere-based stallion. In total he has sired 31 Group One winners, which is more than any other stallion in the world. Based at Banstead Manor, the success of this operation can be seen with Oasis Dream, a Champion at both two and three His three Group 1 victories included a devastating turn of foot in the 2003 Coolmore Nunthorpe where

he made all, quickening close home to win by two and a half lengths. In the breeding shed he has also enjoyed plenty of success, including 2022 2000 Guineas winner Native Trail.

The most famous of his offspring is probably classy filly Midday who landed six top-level victories during her career, including two notable successes here on the Knavesmire - the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Middleton Stakes and the Darley Yorkshire Oaks - as well as being narrowly denied in the Juddmonte International by stablemate Twice Over. Another of Oasis Dream’s sons, Muhaarar, continued the York connection. The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack winner subsequently added four Group 1s in 2015, en-route to being crowned Cartier Champion Sprinter and is now producing his own speedy sons and daughters.

Another smash hit in the bloodstock world has been Juddmonte’s exceptional miler, Kingman - a winner of seven of his eight starts, including four Group 1 victories, the son of Invincible Spirit has already produced 42 Group winners and a further 26 Stakes winners. They include Kinross, Palace Pier, Calyx, Headman, Commissioning and Domestic Spending amongst many others who are only just starting out their racing careers - it’s almost certain that Kingman will be known as one of the truly great sires in years to come.

What is evident is the strength in depth that Juddmonte possess. The quality for Frankel, Oasis Dream, Kingman and latest roster hit, Expert Eye, coupled with the passion and knowledge passed down from the organisation’s much-missed founder, they look set to be sat at the top table for a few generations yet.

The Juddmonte International FACT FILE:

WHEN DID THE RACE BEGIN?

RECORD TIME?

The record time came in 2009 when Sea The Stars completed the 1 mile, 2 furlongs and 88 yards (2,092 metres) course in 2 minutes 5.29 seconds.

Distance

One mile and two furlongs (2,000 metres)

Prize money

£1,000,000

The Juddmonte International was devised by Major Leslie Petch, a former Clerk of the Course at York but he had stepped down from his position due to ill health before the inaugural race was staged.

IS IT AN INTERNATIONAL RACE?

Oh yes - it certainly lives up to its international billing. Thirteen of the 50 renewals have been won by horses trained overseas. Ireland leads the way with 9 victories followed by France with 3 and Italy with 1. Maurice Zilber, the trainer of the 1974 & 1975 winner Dahlia, was born and raised in Cairo where he trained horses from 1946 to 1962 before moving to Chantilly where he worked for further 43 years. In a the thrilling renewal of 2005, Japanese trained ace, Zenno Rob Roy, finished a close second to subsequent Dubai World Cup winner, Electrocutionist, a colt trained in Italy

IS AGE IMPORTANT?

Since the Juddmonte International was first run in 1972, it has been won by 17 three-year-olds, 23 four-year-olds, 10 five-year-olds and only 1 six-year-old, so the stats, if not the betting market, are in favour of three and four-year-olds. Paddington and The Foxes fly the three-year-old flag against four-year-old Nashwa and five-year-old Mostahdaf

FIRST WINNER?

The inaugural running of the Juddmonte International in 1972 produced a contest that has gone down in racing legend. Brigadier Gerard was to suffer his only defeat in 18 career starts when headed by that year’s Derby winner, Roberto.

THE LUCK OF THE O’BRIENS?

The very first renewal was won by the Vincent O’Brien-trained Roberto and he added a second in 1983 with Caerleon, a year after David O’Brien won the race with Assert. After a barren spell, Aidan O’Brien got them back on track when Giant’s Causeway won in 2000; the first of his six winners - Duke Of Marmalade, Rip Van Winkle, Declaration Of War, Australia and the 2019 winner, Japan. John Oxx’s Sea The Stars (Sire of Baaeed) added to Irish success in the race having won in 2009 Paddington is the sole entrant from the Emerald Isle today.

LEADING TRAINERS?

The most successful trainers in the history of the Juddmonte International are Sir Michael Stoute, who has won the race six times courtesy of Shardari (1986), Ezzoud (1993 & 1994), Singspiel (1997), Notnowcato (2006) and Ulysses (2017), however Freemason Lodge cannot add to the tally today. Aidan O’Brien (winners on previous page) who recorded his sixth win with Japan in 2019, bids to take the record with Paddington.

LEADING RIDER?

The most successful jockeys in the history of the Juddmonte International is the much missed Lester Piggott, both he and Frankie Dettori have both won the race five times. Piggott tasted success with Dahlia (1974 & 1975), Hawaiian Sound (1978), Commanche Run (1985) and Rodrigo de Triano (1992) whilst Dettori’s victories came courtesy of Halling (1996), Singspiel (1997), Sakhee (2001), Sulamani (2004) and Authorized (2007). Can Frankie move to number one aboard Mostahdaf in his swansong season.

ANY DUAL WINNERS?

The most successful horses in the history of the Juddmonte International are Dahlia (1974 & 1975), Ezzoud (1993 & 1994) and Halling (1995 & 1996).

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?

Established in 1977, Juddmonte was founded by the late Prince Khalid bin Abdullah and consists of three stud farms in England, two in Ireland, and three in Kentucky, USA.

The Prince won back-to-back renewals of this race in 2011 & 2012 with Twice Over & Frankel. This afternoon marks the thirty-fourth time the race has enjoyed their generous support.

ANY OTHER INTERESTING FACTS?

The shortest-priced winner of the Juddmonte International was the legendary Frankel who blitzed his rivals in 2012 when sent off at 1/10 In victory he set a new record for winning eight European Group 1 races in a row. In 2008 an unbelievably wet summer resulted in the Ebor Festival being abandoned. The Juddmonte International was re-routed to Newmarket, the only time the race has been staged away from York. The rescheduled race, apt in Paddington year, was won by Duke Of Marmalade

BIG RACE TRENDS

THE JUDDMONTE INTERNATIONAL (BRITISH CHAMPIONS SERIES) (GROUP 1)

PREVIOUS WINNERS - LAST TEN RUNNINGS

AGE

Baaeed levelled the scores between the three-year-olds and four-year-olds at four-a-piece in the last decade, with the remaining two winners being five (Postponed, 2016 & Ghaiyyath, 2020).

DISTANCE

Only the great Frankel in 2012, the 2018 winner Roaring Lion, Rodrigo de Triano in 1992 and last year's superstar Baaeed have successfully managed to step up in trip and win the Juddmonte International. In 2013, Declaration Of War stepped up from winning over a mile at Ascot but had already proved himself more than capable over 10 furlongs earlier in his career, whilst Arabian Queen had finished third in the Nassau Stakes over ten furlongs prior to winning here. You need a special one to buck the distance trend first time out!

PROVEN AT THE TOP LEVEL

Unsurprisingly for a race of this quality, the last ten renewals have been dominated by regular Group 1 performers, with only 2011’s victor Twice Over having not contested a top level race on his most recent outing. If we look a bit closer, we see that seven of the last ten winners had finished no worse than second in a Group 1 last time out.

RECENT FORM

Following on from being proven at the top level, it's been a good tactic to oppose any runners without a victory to their name this season, regardless of whether they ran well in defeat. Only Sulamani in 2004 and Roaring Lion in 2018 have won the Juddmonte International in recent seasons having not won a race earlier in the calendar. 2021 winner Mishriff had no domestic victory to his name but had recorded victories in Meydan and Saudi Arabia. Nashwa and The Foxes both failed to win on their previous start.

TRAINERS

Sir Michael Stoute is the joint-most successful trainer in the race’s history with six victories but isn't represented this time around. So Aidan O’Brien will be hoping to move ahead with Paddington carrying his banner this afternoon.

BETTING

Arabian Queen’s victory at odds of 50/1 in 2015 certainly put a cat amongst the pigeons but on the whole, the Juddmonte International isn’t really a race for shocks. Prior to that you have to go back to Ezzoud’s success at 28/1 way back in 1993 to find the only other big-priced winner. Favourites have a decent record here having won five of the last ten renewals, while all bar one of the last ten have been priced at single figures.

KEY TRENDS

Placed or better in Group 1 last time Proven over 10f Favourite

CONCLUSION

PADDINGTON comes into the race unbeaten this season. He's racked up four Group Ones already this season, including when proving himself over 10 furlongs at Sandown. He's a brilliant mix of speed and stamina and it's hard to look passed the favourite. His biggest threat will likely come in the form of Mostahdaf, who represents the older generation today. Frankie is given the ride and the stable did win this race in 2021. His win in the Prince Of Wales's was a shock if the bookies odds are anything to go by but he's a supremely talented animal that is capable of running a big race on his day.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

PADDINGTON has gone from strength to strength this season, especially since scoring in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, and he proved his worth over middle distances when taking the Eclipse last month. An impressive winner of the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot, Mostahdaf looks to be hitting his peak as a five-year-old, but the 7lb he concedes to the selection will be no easy task. Falmouth winner Nashwa adds further intrigue to this prestigious contest.

Leading course trainer (17-22): W Haggas (32 wins from 191 runners, 17%) runs PINAFORE

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): R Fahey (9 wins from 55 runners, 16%) runs MARINE WAVE

Weightwatcher: STAR OF LADY M won off a handicap mark of 86, her rating is now down 7lb to 79.

Longest Traveller: CORALILLO trained by E & P Harty, Ireland.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 21st August.

Swinger: Designer, Radio Goo Goo

KNAVESMIRE TIP

A really competitive renewal and chances can be given to several runners. Pinafore has obvious claims having won so easily last time and with a strong pace over this shorter trip likely to suit. Thunder Star, Cruise and Lady Hamana all bring strong form to the table and have to be respected. However, with her promising run at Goodwood so fresh in the memory, this could go to DESIGNER, who likes it here and may get the race set up perfectly to strike late in the piece.

The Sky Bet Nursery Stakes

Six Furlongs (1,200 metres)

See page 94 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 6f

Race Type: Handicap

Prize Money: £100,000

Age: 2

Stalls: Centre

Getting the hang of handicaps? This time it’s two-year-olds only, going three quarters of a mile in distance. By this stage of the afternoon some will have resorted to their choice of “ps”; with the pin in 2yo nursery handicaps, even the richest one in the land, having a fair record. Pedigree is the second, more professional option, as a “p”.

Good luck in picking a winner with the knowledge that victory in this race means you can remain unbeaten until at least 1.52pm tomorrow!

LAST YEAR’S RACE

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS

THE TALE OF THE CLOCK

Racing Post Standard Time: 1m 10.10s

Course Record: 1m 8.90s by Tiggy Wiggy (21-Aug-14)

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

Leading course trainer (17-22): R Fahey (27 wins from 460 runners, 6%) runs BLUE PRINCE and ZIGGY’S QUEEN

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): C Johnston (15 wins from 77 runners, 19%) runs BARNWELL BOY and SPECIFIC TIMES

Fancy That: R Fahey won this race in 2015 and 2016. The stable runs BLUE PRINCE and ZIGGY’S QUEEN today.

T Dascombe won this race in 2017 and 2021. The stable runs INNVINCIBLE FRIEND today.

Longest Travellers: MAYO NEIGHS & STARLUST trained by R Beckett, Kimpton Down, 251 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 21st August.

Swinger: Starlust, Bobsleigh

KNAVESMIRE TIP

STARLUST has done nothing but improve in four starts to date and ran a blinder to finish second on his handicap debut at Glorious Goodwood, despite racing with the choke out early on. A 3lb rise for that effort is fair and, with Ryan Moore taking over the reins, he should go close Jungle Mate could very easily be three wins from three now, after backing up a debut win with two narrow defeats, and he demands respect. Blue Prince and Bobsleigh are other names to note.
