York Racecard - Saturday 17th June

OFFICIAL RACECARD | £4.00 SATURDAY JUNE 17TH 52nd Macmillan Charity Raceday

A very warm welcome to York for what looks set to be a great day of sporting action in support of a wonderful charity. We are delighted to be hosting Britain’s biggest charity raceday and Macmillan’s biggest single fundraiser, for the 52nd time.

Over £9.5m has now been raised over the previous 51 racedays due to the tremendous support of racegoers, sponsors, supporters and the hard work and generosity of so many people, past and present. We thank you all, everyone can take a huge pride in helping people whose lives are a ected by cancer. We send our utmost appreciation and thanks to all at Macmillan Cancer Support who dedicate themselves to helping patients and their families cope with this terrible disease.

The Oakmere Home Supporting Macmillan Sprint is the latest example of a business to back this great day. One of Britain’s richest sprint handicaps for three-year-olds, it o ers prize money of £100,000. The roll of honour in this race over six furlongs includes top sprinters such as Cadeaux Genereux, Sheikh Albadou and Twilight Son. It may be that some of today’s field return for our flagship sprint contest, the Group One Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe on Friday 25th August. A pair of former Champion Jockeys, Jamie Spencer on Washington Heights and Jim Crowley on Rabaah, will be hoping their mounts can outpace 21 rivals.

With record prize money on o er, the black type contest of the afternoon is the £70,000 Listed Sky Bet Race to the Ebor Grand Cup; which has drawn a quality field. That is hardly surprising as the winner earns a guaranteed berth in the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor on Saturday 26th August, see p27 to find out how. The memorable runaway winner of the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup, Quickthorn, has travelled up from the Newmarket yard of Hughie Morrison and promises a battle of the generations aged four, facing Outbox an eight-year-old opponent from Lambourn who is a seven-time winner, in Archie Watson’s care.

The Queen Mother’s Cup is one of the UK’s richest contest for Lady Amateur Riders. The jockeys themselves do not take any monetary reward so instead they receive their weight in fabulous Ayala champagne; do watch out for this special weighing - in ceremony in the winners’ enclosure. Maybe it is written in in the stars that Becky Smith will make it into the York Winner’s Enclosure on a return visit to the Knavesmire after she was a finalist in the Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards here in February.

The late Reg Gri n was the driving force behind this charity day for some thirty-eight years and it is a privilege for York to stage the Reg Gri n Appreciation EBF Stallions Maiden Stakes in his honour. This looks a particularly high-quality juvenile renewal and the field look sure to compete at a high grade in the months ahead.

The continuing support of the Basil Samuel Charitable Trust, PPS Essential Supplies, the Ice Company, as well as that of Oakmere Homes and Sky Bet is hugely appreciated.

There is the chance to bid for one of the fantastic lots in the Macmillan auction (see p21) or to buy a ra e ticket (see p42), or to donate after enjoying the Popvox Choir who will be singing in Clocktower Enclosure. Do raise a cheer for our brave sky divers, who took part in the Macmillan Jump of Their Lives just last Sunday, between this intrepid group they have already raised over £56,000, see p38.

As we look set to be blessed with the sunny weather, then both of the County Stand Garden and Roberto Village near the Bustardthorpe lawn o er a pleasant place to sit and sip something chilled.

Thank you for your support and your generosity this afternoon. I hope you have an enjoyable and successful day.

Welcome from Gemma Peters, Macmillan’s new Chief Executive

Thank you so much for joining us for the 52nd Macmillan Charity Raceday at York Racecourse. Whether you’re a regular supporter or - like me - you’re joining us for the first time this year, I hope you have a wonderful day.

Since the first event in 1971, the Raceday has raised over £9.6 million for good causes. 90% of this total has come to Macmillan Cancer Support, helping us to do whatever it takes to support people with living cancer.  The remainder has gone to other local charities including York Against Cancer, St Leonard’s Hospice, Racing Welfare, and the Injured Jockeys Fund.

None of this would have been possible without the continued support of York Racecourse, the Racecourse Committee, William Derby, and the countless racegoers who have been such avid supporters of Macmillan. We really are so grateful for the ongoing support. There are over 216,000 people living with cancer in Yorkshire and the Humber. We estimate this will rise to more than 308,000 by 2030, and one in two of us can expect to receive a cancer diagnosis during our lifetime. Your support really has never been more important.

I very much look forward to joining you for this year’s event and I’d like to offer my thanks in advance for the support you give today - through your sponsorship, the auction, and by giving so generously as you attend the Macmillan Charity Raceday.

If you would like to support Macmillan Cancer Support today you can scan this QR code using your camera to make an online donation

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there disabled and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row.

Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and

are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. There was one more thing?

Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. GUESS WHO?

I trained the winner of the 2020 Sky Bet Race To The Ebor Grand Cup Stakes

WHO AM I?

Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed big race success at York in the past from the clues provided? There is an answer for each question.

1. Born in 1988, I trained as an apprentice jockey with Richard Hannon, riding my first winner in 2014 and becoming champion apprentice in 2015

2. In 2017, I rode my first Group winner at Salisbury, any guesses on the horse if you’ve managed to work me out.

3. In recent years I’ve built up a great relationship with a number of horses, including a prolific winner down under. I rode a Group One double on this horse, can you get the horse and trainer?

4. In 2020 I rode my first Classic winner, does anyone know the race and if you do, can you get the horse. Clue, the horse was an Irish raider!

“Royal York”

For the first time since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, we recall some royal connections to the Knavesmire.

1971: HM The Late Queen visits to view the historic meeting of Brigadier Gerard and Roberto in the inaugural running of the showpiece G1 Juddmonte International. Dartmouth, who carried the famous royal silks to victory in the 2017 Group 2 Boodles Yorkshire Cup, also won the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes crown in 2016 for trainer Sir Michael Stoute. The then, Princess Anne and her fellow jockeys emerge from the weighing-in building before the Queen Mother’s Cup on 11 June 1988. Clerk of the Course, Anthea Leigh, also rode that famous day. Parading through the streets of York.
26
The Royal party arrives in style with the then York Chairman The Earl of Halifax.

This season sees the latest staging of the famous race as part of a an extensive partnership with Leeds-based Sky Bet.

York Racecourse and its longstanding partner are committed to both cherishing and yet developing the track’s most famous race.

Today sees the final instalment of a series entitled the “Race To The Ebor” which includes four high-class staying contests, including a brand new Irish race which joined in the series last year. The four races nominated for the “Race To The Ebor” are:

Sky Bet Melrose Handicap (3YO only)

York - 1m 6f

Saturday 20 August 2022

Sky Bet Jorvik Handicap (4YO+)

York - 1m 4f

Wednesday 17 May 2023

Sky Bet Stakes (Handicap, 4YO+)

The Curragh - 1m 6f

Wednesday 7 June 2023

Sky Bet Grand Cup (Listed, 4YO+)

York - 1m 6f

Saturday 17 June 2023

Sky Bet Ebor (Handicap 4YO+)

York - 1m 6f

Saturday 26 August 2023

The winners of the four races above will be guaranteed a start position in the Sky Bet Ebor of 2023 provided they are entered and confirmed in the normal way. In a further boost to connections, if these horses run in the Sky Bet Ebor 2023 and fail to finish in the top eight places, they will have their entry fee to the race (worth £5,000) refunded, the top eight receive £5,000 or more in prize money.

In the event that any of the “Race To The Ebor” winners were set to carry the lowest weight in the Sky Bet Ebor, that horse’s weight would be raised to the equivalent of the lowest-weighted horse that was set to run through the established entry process.

To complement this initiative York Racecourse invested in Britain’s largest set of starting stalls, able to accommodate 22 runners, an increase of two participants on the 2018 configuration. After his success in the Sky Bet Melrose last August, we know that Soulcombe already has a “golden ticket”, albeit a return from Oz where he now plies his trade seems unlikely. Andrew Balding’s Scampi booked his place after a strong staying performance back in May. Nusret showed he’s not just a classy hurdler when landing the Curraghs qualifier for Joseph O’Brien, all roads now lead to the Ebor on Saturday 25th August.

The Queen Mother’s Cup

In 1972 Meriel Tuffnell became the first woman to ride a winner under rules on Scorched Earth at Kempton. 15 years later someone at York Racecourse had a brainwave.

Why not add to the firmly established and by that time hugely successful Macmillan Charity Day with a prestigious Ladies Race?

Yes, there was one at Ascot on King George Day but all their other races were in the ‘for those of you who don’t want to beat the traffic’ final contest slot.

So, in 1988 the tens of thousands on the Knavesmire and a big Saturday television audience were treated to the first running of the new race, The Queen Mother’s Cup, one of its most memorable renewals, ensured it was to become an cherished part of the occasion, as racing’s equivalent of The Judges gave it a resounding 10!

A good field went to post that afternoon. The odds-on favourite was McCubbin, trained by the late Sir Henry Cecil and ridden by his then wife, Julie, but many eyes were on Insular, owned and trained by Ian Balding, who was to go off at 14-1.

The reason? This was a horse formerly owned by The Queen Mother and bred by HM The Late Queen. To crown the Royal link, on board was The Princess Royal, Eventing Gold Medallist and the first member of the British Royal Family to be selected for the Olympics.

Haweel, in Sheikh Hamdan’s colours made the early running, with Insular, who had run in the Imperial Cup over Hurdles at Sandown just three months earlier, in second. Turning for home Julie Cecil made her move.

But Insular was far too good for them, winning without being asked a serious question The Princess Royal, the pair came home by 12 lengths, so amid scenes of great excitement York’s new race, and now Britain’s Premier Ladies Race, had earned its own Royal Warrant.

Often a race where father/daughter combinations occupy the T. & J. slots in the racecard, a footnote to the Royal victory was that our own Racing Manager, Anthea Leigh, had a briefly close up view of proceedings, when finishing eighth aboard Renshaw Wood, trained by her late father, Peter Beaumont.

If there remains any doubt, then ITV Racing presenter, Francesca Cumani, is probably a good person to ask, as her family enjoyed great success in the early years of the century.

30

In 2004 the nation weas treated to a classic episode of ‘Mother Knows Best’ as with Francesca a socially distanced 6th, Sara Cumani on Mephisto scrambled home from Court of Appeal by a head. Roll forward, then Idealistic in the season of Royal Ascot at York followed by Soulacroix gave Francesca back-to-back wins.

This is a race that throws up so many tales over so many years, more than a few of which involve the ‘goings on’ as the post-race ceremonies include the jockey winning her weight in champagne, this year from Ayala, in a public ‘weigh in’ in the Winners Enclosure.

In 2018 Sophie, one of the twin daughters of trainer Michael Dods, won the race to her father’s special delight, as it was days before they had a joint 21st birthday party - about as long as the prize lasted.

And through the years there have been several winning riders who have been part of the extended (in some cases very extended) family of a certain Sherriff Hutton based trainer who has tried, in a moment of absent mindedness to rest his foot on the scales at that all important moment… It’s a special race, for a special cause on a special day. There won’t be a more competitive race anywhere this weekend.

The first race is a competitive handicap for lady amateur riders. Such races are designed for close competition so the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best on past performances will be the highest rated horse, being Postmark and Saratoga Gold here and so these will carry most weight. This is the richest race in the land for these amateur riders, however as such they can’t share the cash, so instead the winner will receive her weight in Ayala champagne.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

KIHAVAH has really found his footing of late, with triumphs across both codes, and the six-year-old is fancied to record a third C&D success. Saratoga Gold made a pleasing reappearance when third at Newmarket last month and is feared most off 1lb lower. Dream Harder should appreciate this return to 1m 4f and Ian Williams’ gelding looks to have more races in him off his mark too, while the in-form Bollin Margaret cannot be discounted either.

Again, a handicap, this time seeking equal competition by being amongst horses aged three and above. While the last race was for good horses rated up to 90, this race is for those a rated up to 95. Those closer to the top will carry more weight; In this instance it’s a tie as. Gweedore and Snazzy Jazzy are both carrying the heaviest burden.

So, pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, look how Eligible is one that carries both consonants.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

In this competitive contest it may pay dividends to side with ADMIRAL D, who failed to fire in the Victoria Cup on his latest outing. The four-year-old hit the line with plenty of conviction to finish seventh over 6f at Newmarket on his penultimate outing and he can take a step forward on this sounder surface. Darkness has been knocking on the door over this trip and demands the utmost consideration. Eligible can mount a bold big on his hunt for successive wins.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Although QUICKTHORN hasn’t been as progressive this season, he boasts leading credentials based on the pick of his form. He landed the Lonsdale Cup Stakes over an extended 2m last August in emphatic style and, if allowed to dictate from the front here, he could prove difficult to peg back. Ching Shih kept on well for third over 1m 4f at Goodwood last month and could outrun a tasty price if building on that effort, while recent Group 3 winner Roberto Escobarr is another to consider.

YORK TO ASCOT LINKED IN HISTORY AND QUALITY

Getting on for twenty years may have slipped past since its visit, but the links between York and the Royal Meeting continue to be strong. Here, we look at a few highlights…

SPRINTING

History shows us: Battaash as the star of the modern era, with his final win at York coming in the Coolmore Nunthorpe in 2020 having already landed the fastest contest in Berkshire. While 2015 Group 1 Platinum Jubilee Stakes winner, Twilight Son, took victory in the Charity Sprint here in the same year. Naval Crown won Britain’s richest maiden back in 2020 and followed that success up with a win in last year’s Platinum Jubilee Stakes.

The week ahead: York heroine Highfield Princess looks set to line up in this year’s King’s Stand and currently sits top of the market. She’s won twice on the Knavesmire and finished a good second in the 1895 Duke Of York Clipper Stakes this year.

Noble Style’s sole entry is in the Commonwealth Cup and the 2022 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack winner will be hoping to bounce back.

Marshman is entered in both the King’s Stand and the Commonwealth Cup. He finished second to the aforementioned Noble Style last year and was sent off favourite for the Clipper race at the Dante where he finished fifth.

JUVENILES

History shows us: Some of the best two-year-old’s are sent to York and the victory of Bradsell in the 2022 EBF Restricted Novice Stakes, before Archie Watson’s colt took the Group 2 Coventry Stakes proves the point. Bradsell has a supplementary entry for the Kings Stand on Tuesday

The week ahead: Last year Karl Burke took the Steve Parkin owned Dramatised to Berkshire to win the Queen Mary. In 2023 he hopes that Got To Love A Grey in the Middleham Park colours will back up her EBF Clipper Marygate Stakes victory at York. Impressive Knavesmire winner, Mon Na Slieve will be hoping the Norfolk Stakes is not too high a mountain to climb.

STAYERS

Stradivarius

History shows us: We might never see a stayer like the great Stradivarius, who claimed six races on the Knavesmire, to go with his three Gold Cups at Royal Ascot. The week ahead: A winner of the Sky Bet Melrose; Coltrane is going in search of this year’s Gold Cup.

Last year’s Ascot Stakes winner also registered that success at York back in 2020. Second favourite and 2022 Betfred St Leger winner, Eldar Eldarov, was a brilliant second in the Boodles Yorkshire Cup and could prove a big danger.

3 52
Highfield Princess

MIDDLE DISTANCE

History shows us: Sir Michael Stoute’s record is something of a sensationTelescope won the Group 2 Sky Bet Great Voltigeur here before going onto Ascot glory. He managed the York to Ascot trick with Snow Sky in 2015. The week ahead: Winner of the Group 3 Tattersalls Acomb last August, the Juddmonte-owned Chaldean, will bid to add a third Group 1 win to his CV when tackling the St James’s Palace Stakes.

The 62nd John Smith’s Cup winner, Hukum, currently leads the betting for the Hardwicke Stakes for Owen Burrows and Shadwell. Close behind him is another Knavesmire winner, Pyledriver. William Muir & Chris Grassicks stable star gained his win in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes in 2020 and the Berkshire victor could well come from one of the two Knavesmire winners!

PICK ME AN OUTSIDER

Royal Scotsman could be the forgotten horse in the St James’s Palace Stakes. Paul & Oliver Cole’s charge finished fifth in last years Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack but scoped badly that day. He was a good third in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas and the Irish equivalent most likely came too soon. He could outrun his odds.

THE HANDICAPS

History shows us: Picking handicap winners is never easy however the Knavesmire can be an indicator. Aricebo has been a real hero for connections, running six times at York, in 2021 he gave each-way punters a nice return in the King’s Stand.

1895 Duke Of York Clipper Stakes eighth, Rohaan, stormed to success in the Wokingham Stakes last year. It can often pay to follow those dropping out of Group company.

The week ahead: Astro King currently sits favourite in the Royal Hunt Cup market after an eye-catching run in the Sky Bet Hambleton Stakes. Impressive Reg Bond Always And Forever Handicap winner, Shining Blue, finished second in the Listed Seat Unique Ganton Stakes yesterday. He now would not carry a penalty, were he to take his place in the Royal Hunt Cup.

THE OTHER WAY AROUND

A strong cast list but as a leading man, the mighty Frankel won the Queen Anne two months before his triumph in the Juddmonte International. Last year, we saw Baaeed follow up a win at the Royal Meeting so notebooks and iPads at the ready.

A WINTER’S TALE:

WHAT IS NEW AT YORK THIS SEASON?

AS WE WELCOME THOSE MAKING THEIR FIRST VISIT OF 2023, THE TEAM HAVE BEEN BUSY OVER THE WINTER MONTHS, HERE ARE SOME THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR.

UPGRADED CANTERDOWN

This important strip of turf, between you and the stand side running rail, has been upgraded. The irrigation system on the whole racing surface has been further upgraded using the best in sprinkler technology from Hunter, the Californian based supplier. We know, it just looks like grass but it is so much more....

NOVEMBER 2022 Starring Groundspup Ollie MAY 2023 54

THE FLYING FRANKIE

A Theakston’s backed cask ale pub, to toast the success of the Italian rider. Set at the southern end of the John Carr Terrace for County Stand racegoers and stocked with a selection of North Yorkshire brewed ales from the famous Theakston stable, it will feature Ebor IPA created especially for the Knavesmire racegoer. Operating as a guest ale in this new site and in the established Theakston Bar in Grandstand and Paddock, it will retail at £5.90 for a pint.

JOHN CARR “FOOD TO GO”

Try the new York Philly sandwiches, or sit at your table on the Champagne Lawn and use the QR code to order your drinks, for delivery.

YORK KITCHEN & CAFÉ

The fresh look continues with the main racegoer restaurant in Grandstand and Paddock being given a new name, the York Kitchen & Café, a clear indication of its homemade signature dishes, such as deep filled Yorkshire Puddings.

The richest race today is a sprint handicap. The best on past performance will be the highest rated horse and so will carry more weight than the lowest rated opponent; the respective rating of Millstream and Dark Kestrel sees them more a stone apart! This race is only open to horses aged three.

If you are looking for a tip then perhaps follow the racecourse tipster, Baron Ferdinand, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

QUINAULT has struck on his last four starts which has put him 26lb higher than at the start of that winning streak. The latest of those victories came at Newmarket, where he had Washington Heights (second) and Eminency (third) behind him and he looks to have lots in his favour to uphold that form. Catch The Paddy is one to note after his runner-up effort over 7f at this track last time and he would be foolish to dismiss.

Reg Griffin (1929-2008)

Founder and organiser of Charity Day 1971-2008

Born in Liverpool on Valentine’s Day in 1929, the son of a railway guard, Reg left school seemingly destined for a career as a surveyor. However, having been captivated by walking the Grand National course aged just five, racing was always his first love and, after National Service, he began to convert dreams into reality.

Griffin joined Phil Bull at Timeform in 1957, following spells as secretary/assistant to Jack Fawcus at Middleham and Arthur Budgett at Whatcombe. Ten years later, he became managing director and, thirty-two years on from that, chairman, a position he retained until formally retiring in November, 2007.

In 1970, Noel Nettleship, then Doncaster racecourse manager, forwarded a letter to Phil Bull from a Mrs Irene Hunt, regional organiser for the National Society for Cancer Relief. Mrs Hunt, based in Sheffield, was aware that a charity race meeting had been organised at Ascot and was hoping someone might do the same in the North. Bull passed the letter to Reg- and, as the old saying goes, what followed became history.

Reg agreed to help, provided no one interfered. Having persuaded the Jockey Club to grant a fixture to a commercial firm for the first time (at Doncaster in ‘71), he then secured sponsorship totalling £60,000 for a sevenrace card. At the time, this was the richest one-day meeting ever staged in Britain and the first at which every event was broadcast live on national radio. It also received extensive television coverage on ITV, so today the wheel comes full circle.

Come the day, the Queen, making her first appearance at Town Moor for fifteen years, watched her colt Charlton, named in honour of the World Cup winning football brothers, Bobby and Jack, land the featured William Hill Gold Trophy.

The following year, the Jockey Club refused to help, telling Reg that he must find an existing programme. Thanks to the late Charles Halifax (father of the current Earl, Ernie), the meeting was moved to a Saturday at York in mid-June, where it has remained ever since.

£9.5 million,

Sir Reginald, what else!

Due to a whole host of loyal supporters, many of whom are present today, the race day, which has so far raised over £7.5 million, continues. Today's 8th race, run since 2011 in Reg's honour, was actually won in 2010 by a horse named after him - the name, Sir Reginald, what else!

A race limited to 2yo maiden horses; meaning those yet to win. Racing recognises that in their first season, the different sexes will develop differently. However, this is made simple today as all the contestants are male thoroughbreds. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. Down to your choice of the two “ps”, pedigree or pin.

Fancy That: R Fahey won this race in 2013, 2016 and 2017. The stable runs SILENT MOVE today.

Longest Traveller: WE NEVER STOP trained by K Ryan, Hambleton, 95 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 15th June.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

We Never Stop posted a good third over course and distance on his debut last month, but preference is for TWILIGHT ROMANCE. John Quinn’s colt filled the same position at Haydock 23 days ago, in a race which has since seen the second go on to win. Silent Move cost the princely sum of 200,000gns as a yearling and makes plenty of appeal, while Indicate should not be underestimated either.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

WHAT’S THE STORY has posted two solid efforts back on turf since he returned from a short break and, having shown tenacity to win at Carlisle 26 days ago, a 2lb higher mark might not be enough to prevent another bold bid. Pisanello beat the selection by half a length at Hamilton on his penultimate start but is 2lb worse off at the weights, and this slightly longer trip hands an advantage to the selection. Tropez Power is also considered.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

A really competitive renewal which could go the way of ROYAL PARADE, who bounced right back to his best when bolting up at Goodwood last time and, despite carrying a 5lb penalty, he remains well handicapped on his old form. Previous C&D winners Abate, Good Earth and Soldier’s Minute all have sound claims under perfect conditions, while Rich Waters and Great News could take a hand if getting back to near their best, especially the former who hasn’t been with Grant Tuer long.
