Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
Selected to win the race
Good chance of being placed.
By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
The details of Owner, Trainer, Breeder, Sponsor & Colours are highlighted on the card. If you are unsure about reading the card, remember to ask at a tote window for advice.
You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet. If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted
Look out for the charity Racing to School today; you shouldn’t miss them as they will be leading a group of local pupils and their teachers through every corner of the racecourse for an action-packed day of fun challenges and discovery. The charity works nationwide with over 250 schools, and this year will reach around 16,000 young people – at UK racecourses, trainers’yards and studs.
They deliver free, outdoor activity days to support the learning and to boost the self-confidence of children aged nine and above. Racing to School uses racing venues as unique, fast-moving classrooms full of opportunities to practise and improve subjects like maths, literacy and problem-solving.
The charity is only able to support young people’s education through the kind donations it receives. Please scan this QR code to donate, if you can.

Juvenile races are designed solely for four-year-olds in order to allow the younger horses to gain valuable experience by racing against each other before taking on their older, more battle-hardened rivals. Initially, every runner in this two miles and half a furlong hurdle race is allotted 10st 12lb (fillies 10st 5lb), before previous winners are given a penalty dependant on the class of race which they won – 7lb for a hurdle race or 12lb for two hurdle race victories.

Horse welfare is a priority at Taunton Racecourse At every meeting there are 3 specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys.
A second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse It is designed to afford the vet and horse some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles and half a furlong race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

This is a two miles and seven furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

This is a two miles and three furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 120 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 115.

Having been campaigned over fences this season, BALKO SAINT ran better than for a while when runner-up at Wincanton last time and probably would have won if not for errors in the latter stages. The 6-y-o is on a workable mark now back over hurdles and he can see off the challenge of last-time-out winners Decorated and Earth King.

This is a three mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 125. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

Probable S.P’s: 9-4 Iberio (GER), 3-1 Apple Rock (IRE), 7-2 Mr Tambourine Man (IRE), 6-1 My Last Oscar (IRE), 17-2 Guernesey (FR)
The one with the most compelling claims is APPLE ROCK, who typically found plenty for pressure when completing the hat-trick here at the end of last year. He looked a little short of full matchfitness back from 7 weeks off at Ascot and, with that run under his belt, the 9-y-o can resume winning ways. My Last Oscar, also a C&D winner on his sole previous visit to Taunton, may emerge as the main danger given that this trip is a concern for both Iberio and Mr Tambourine Man.
for novice five yrs old and upwards x Total prize fund £10300 Owners Prize Money. 1st £4160, 2nd £2080, 3rd £1040, 4th £520, 5th £260. (Penalty Value £5439.43) Weights raised 4lb and paragraph 34 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable.
This two mile handicap steeple chase has been designed for five-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles and half a furlong.

PLAY SMARTER
JOHNNYWHO is of strong interest on this Rules debut given that he had none other than subsequent Grade 1 hurdles winner Hermes Allen back in third when easily winning a maiden point in October 2021. This scenario probably won’t be entirely ideal but the hint should nevertheless be taken if the market speaks in his favour It was disappointing that Mr Mackay failed to land the odds at Hereford last time, and it’s possible that Pentire Head and Bhaloo will emerge as the main dangers.
