HORSE WELFARE

“Racing’s top priority is the safety and welfare of horse and rider”. Like most sports racing carries risks, however, we work to make sure that no death or injury occurs, which could have been prevented. Here at Stratford Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have two specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action There is also a British Horseracing Authority Vet in attendance. During the race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys.

It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy Please do not assume the worst.

HOW TO BET WITH A BOOKMAKER

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, name the horse, (the bookmaker won’t necessarily know it’s number) Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet

3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the racegoer as to his rights

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes. e.g. £1, £5 or £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

•Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win

•3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2

•5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2

•8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

•Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

•Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

•Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only

BETTING FORECAST:

15-8 Greenrock Abbey (IRE), 9-4 Grandeur d’Ame (FR), 4-1 Thelasthighking (IRE), 11-2 Extraordinary Man (FR), 50-1 Tiger Voice (FR)

RACE SUMMARY:

GREENROCK ABBEY improved for the fitting of cheekpieces when scoring in good style at Hereford in January and subsequently pulled clear of the rest when hitting the crossbar at Uttoxeter He should be suited by this sharp track and shades preference ahead of Huntingdon-winner Grandeur d’Ame. Though Thelasthighking was well beaten on debut in this sphere, he is very much a chasing type on looks and may leave that form well behind here following a break/wind op.

Stratford Racecourse has generously sponsored all races today and will present a memento to the winning owner and a £75 cash prize to the stable employee responsible for the best turned out horse

RACE SUMMARY:

ICAQUE DE L’ISLE appeared to find 3m on soft ground too much of a test on debut for present connections but he has peformed with credit both starts since and there has to be a good chance that his stamina will pass the test over this intermediate trip round here. If that proves to be the case, he could be the answer to this trappy-looking contest. Native Robin and Reserve Tank would both be thrown in off their current marks if able to stage a revival but, as things stand, Animal is feared most.

RACE SUMMARY:

An interesting bumper to conclude. TREGELE impressed with the way he travelled for a long way on his Southwell debut 6 weeks ago and gets the nod to build on that promising run. Point-recruits Cornamona and South Omo Zone are potentially dangerous opponents, particularly if the betting speaks in their favour Flying Fortune has the form to be thereabouts, while the strength behind Saint Jaguen on his debut suggests he’s thought capable of a lot better than he showed on that occasion.
