Welcome to Sandown Park Racecourse to help us celebrate the official end of the 2024/25 Jump Racing Season at what is set to be hugely exciting bet365 Jump Finale meeting.
Today we are also celebrating Sandown Park’s 150th birthday, with us first racing on 22nd April 1875 with this very fixture. Since 1875, Sandown Park has enjoyed many moments of notable history, from early flight records, to televising the first ever sporting event in 1948. In 1957 we became the first course to have a commercial sponsor in Whitbread and today we are honoured to have bet365 who have helped shape this fixture into the Jump Finale meeting we all love today. I am truly grateful for their unwavering support.
The action today is staggeringly exciting with the drama of the Trainer Championship playing out live during racing. Below are the standings as of yesterday and, as you can see, there is everything to play for.
1st Dan Skelton- £3,334,090
2nd Willie Mullins - £3,283,054
3rd Paul Nicholls- £2,473,632
Before the Champions are declared and the trophies handed out, Sandown Park will be awarding our annual Sandown Special Award for positive contribution to our sport. This year our award goes to the late John Hales and we give our unending thanks to the Hales family for bringing some of their beautiful horses to parade for us in his honour
If you still have energy for more, there is an after party to end the season in style where you can party into the evening with Radio 2 DJ Scott Mills as he hosts our official birthday bash Finally, although it is our birthday, we are keen to give a present to our local community. As such, we are planning to walk 150 laps of Sandown Park to raise £150,000 for the Community Fund for Elmbridge. If you would like to contribute in anyway there will be exit collections where you can donate
I hope that you have a fantastic time at Sandown Park today and wish the horses and their connections the very best of luck

Carried into the winner’s enclosure by some of racing’s greatest talents, it’s hard not to spot the silks somewhere on a racecard every day across the country. The 2024/25 seasonhasbeennodifferentforJPMcManuswith over 70 winners and £2,900,000+ in prize money, no doubt bolstered by Inothewayurthinkin’s victory in the Boodles Gold Cup – JP’s second win in the race. This year will see him win for the ninth successive season, the 17th time this century in Britain, setting a record that will take some surpassing in the future.
Where else to start than the 2025 Boodles Gold Cup winner Inothewayurthinkin. The seven-year-old built on a solid season overthe fences in Ireland to score in impressive fashion at The Festival. Taking the lead before the last, his rivals were simply no match for him and he scored by six lengths.
It was another great season for Jonbon as the gelding bested Edwardstone yet again to win both the Shloer Chase and theBetfairTingleCreekforthesecondyear running. Success in the Clarence House at Ascot followed but most recently he was a comfortable winner of the Melling at Aintree, his success neverlooking in doubt.

PROFILE: It’s a first championship title for Sean Bowen after he came agonisingly close to his maiden title last season, losing out by seven winners. Thisyearitisadifferentstory,withSeanover30victoriesclearofhisnearest rival in the championship. It’s been a season of landmarks; alongside his first title Sean reached 1,000 career winners in February and the biggest win of his career came just days ago in the Irish Grand National aboard Rebecca Curtis trained Haiti Couleurs. With determination and a hunger towinrivallingsome ofsport’s greats, thereisno doubt this title will be the first of many to come.
GB JUMPS, CURRENT SEASON, APR 2024 - APR 2025
Bowen formed a great partnershipwith Haiti Couleurs throughout the season. Picking up strong wins in novice contests atAintree and Cheltenham, the pair came into this week in great form with their eyes set on the Irish Grand National. Jumping well throughout, the pairsecuredtheirbiggest pot oftheyear
Bowen linked up with Olly Murphy’s Strong Leader in November to get the jump season off to a flyer The first run since April of that same year for the gelding, he nevertheless put in a fine performance, staying on well to take the win in the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury.
PROFILE: A season to remember for Freddie Gingell as he becomes the latest Champion Conditional. If anyone was ever born to be a jockey, then it is surely Freddie. His grandfather is Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning trainer Colin Tizzard and his late mum, Kim, played an integral role in her father’s powerful Dorset stables. Uncle Joe is now in charge of the Tizzard operation, and he is providing his nephew Freddie with plenty of ammunition, as is Paul Nicholls. Freddie’s victory on Nicholls’ Il Ridoto in the Paddy Power Gold Cup in November gave him his first taste of big race success. Aged just 19, Freddie has shown an abundance of potential this season with over 35 winners and no doubt will have many more big seasons to come.
Il Ridoto has been a regularride forFreddie this season. The duo found great success together when combining to win the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham in November Prominent throughout the contest, they were the clear leaders from two out and picked up an impressive win.
Another regular mount of Freddie’s, Copperhead has been in great form this term. A strong win at Chepstow in October was followed by a massive 14 length win at Aintree that same month. Their marquee win as a pair though came when winning the Veterans’ Chase Series Final at Market Rasen in January
We are honoured to have the family of the late John Hales here with us at Sandown Park collecting this year’s Sandown Park Special Award on John’s behalf.
The Sandown Park Special Award is a presented annually during the bet365 Jump Finale and recognises individuals who have made significant contributions totheworldofNationalHuntracing;celebratingtheirdedication, achievements, andimpact onour sport. One of racing’sgreatestcharacters, John sadly passed in January but will always be remembered for embodying everything this award stands for. His time, energy, and unwavering love for National Hunt racing have left an indelible mark on the sport. Over the years, John has experienced countless memorable moments - from triumphing in the iconic Grand National to celebrating success right here at Sandown Park in the Tingle Creek Chase.
His racing journey has been marked by truly iconic horses. Famous for his love for grey horses, John’s first foray into racehorse ownership was a successful one; purchasing ONE MAN who took him to back-to-back victories in the King George VI Chase in 1995 and 1996, before claiming the Queen Mother Champion Chase in 1998. We are absolutely delighted that some of John’s beloved horses join us today to parade in his memory and we’d like to thank the Hales family for allowing the horses to parade.
Finally, a thank you to John, for your dedication and passion that has helped shape our sport’s legacy. You are greatly missed.
One of John’s beloved greys, NEPTUNE COLLONGES gave the Hales family one of their most special days when delivering an unforgettable victory in the 2012 Grand National Known as Nipper at home and trained by Paul Nicholls, the stunning grey’s first graded victory was at Sandown Park in the Grade 2 Winter Novices’ Hurdle in a career that included eleven wins with three Grade 1 wins as well as that National win. Daryl Jacob was in the saddle on that day, snatching victory by the shortest of margins, a nose, on the horses’ only start in the great race Nipper was retired immediately and has spent his retirement at the Hales family home in Shropshire, where he remains a much-loved part of the family at the grand age of 24
A real fan-favourite, POLITOLOGUE, has been enjoying his retirement with Lucy Felton since his retirement in 2022 POLITOLOGUE enjoyed a stellar career, winning twelve of his thirty-one starts including four Grade 1’s; the 2020 Queen MotherChampionChaseattheCheltenhamFestival,the2018MellingChaseand two Betfair Tingle Creek’s here at Sandown Park in 2017 and 2020
In more recent years, John joined forces with Sir Alex Ferguson and Ged Mason; a formidable trio whose shared passion for racing led to continued success PROTEKTORAT quickly became a standout, delivering eight exceptional victories, including the 2021 Manifesto Novices’ Chase, the2022BetfairChase,andtheRyanairChase in 2024. PROTEKTORAT’s latest victory came in the Flye Fe Lys Chase at Windsor, coming home 23 lengths clear of favourite Djelo –a spectacular victory witnessed by John who was there to welcome PROTEKTORAT back into the Winners Enclosure. Owned in partnership with Ged Mason and Sir Alex Ferguson.
Purchasedforarecord-breaking€740,000,thePaulNichollstrainedseven-yearold is now a Grade 1 winner following up his Cheltenham Festival Grade 2 win with a win in the Mildmay Novices’ Chase at Aintree. Owned in partnership with Ged Mason and Sir Alex Ferguson.
Dan Skelton trained L’EAU DU SUD has already notched up four impressive wins, including a memorable maiden Grade 1 win in the Henry VIII Novices’ Chase here at Sandown Park in December 2024 Owned in partnership with Ged Mason and Sir Alex Ferguson.
French bred five-year-old KALIF DU BERLAIS is another who parades fresh off the back of his maiden Grade 1win which came in the Maghull Novices’ Chase at Aintree. Owned in partnership with Ged Mason and Sir Alex Ferguson.

JOCKEY 2024/25
CHAMPION CONDITIONAL JOCKEY 2024/25
Racing Post host their annual jumps horse of the year award and this year we’ve had some real stars, so lets take a look at the contenders
This horse continues to deliver season, after season. After a solid start to the season in the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham, he turned heads with a performance here at Sandown Park that left no doubt about his class. His victory in the Betfair Tingle Creek was a masterclass of speed, control, and power - firmly placing him among the best of the best Heading into The Festival, all eyes were on the Queen Mother Champion Chase and whilst it wasn’t quite the fairytale ending, his brilliant recovery after a tricky start to finish second should not go unnoticed. As the season draws to a close, the future looks incredibly bright for JONBON, with 4 out of 5 runs this season finishing in triumph With his undeniable talent and growing legacy, he’ll be a force to reckoned with next season. Can anyone stop him in 2025/2026? Only time will tell, but he’s more than ready to take on the challenge. We know that Nicky Henderson has a soft spot for this horse. The question is do we?
WHAT. A. HORSE Is there anything else to say? LOSSIEMOUTH was simply incredible this season. This mare has had four impressive wins, starting off the season with a strong win at Punchestown in the Grade 1 Coolmore N.H. Sires Bolshoi Ballet Irish EBF Mares Champion Hurdle, winning by 7 lengths She then went on to beat the talented Teahupoo at Fairyhouse. Although she had a wobble mid-season, her strong personality, unyielding spirit and fierce determination brought her back to winning spirits at Cheltenham Festival in the Grade 1 Mares Hurdle, beating her opponents by 7½ lengths. She looked incredible at Cheltenham and won with ease. In the Ladbrokes Christmas Hurdle, Constitution Hill may have claimed the victory, but LOSSIEMOUTH proved her resilience and strength by getting the better of Constitution Hill in the William Hill Aintree Hurdle over, turning the tables in a stunning display of grit and class. We can’t wait to see where this amazing mare goes next
Although he didn’t make it three wins in the Boodles Gold Cup, we can’t take away from the rest of his brilliant season GALOPIN DES CHAMPS has had two brilliant wins this season, two narrow second places and one third place. GALOPIN DES CHAMPS started hisseasonoffatPunchestown, beingnarrowly beatenbyFastorslowintheGrade1Ladbrokes Punchestown Gold Cup However, it should be noted that this horse beat other notable names including Hewick, Gentlemansgame, and Appreciate It After an average run in the 2025 John Durkin, being beaten by Fact to File, this legend of a horse came bouncing back to reverse the standings at Leopardstown and take the victory. He followed on his winning streak in the Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup, winning by 4¾ lengths. Although it may not have been a winning end to his season, he still performed immensely in the Cheltenham Gold Cup to finish second What will he do next season?
He may have flown under the radar at the start of the season, but NICK ROCKETT has officially arrived With three impressive wins from four starts, including a sensational victory in the Randox Grand National at Aintree - yes, the Grand National - he’s now a serious player in the staying chase division. His jumping was slick, his stamina bottomless, and under Patrick Mullins, he outclassed a 34-strong field to take home one of the sport’s biggest prizes Trained by father, ridden to victory by son – that is somewinforthepair!Thattriumphfollowed hard-fought wins at Fairyhouse and Gowran Park, where he showed toughness and maturity. Even his only defeat this season (a solid fourth in a stacked handicap at Leopardstown) was full of promise. This season was all about stepping up - and step up he did. With talent, toughness, and a Grand National already under his belt, NICK ROCKETT looks destined for even bigger things next season The sky’s the limit for this powerhouse INOTHEWAYURTHINKIN
Talk about timing your run to perfection INOTHEWAYURTHINKIN might have started the season quietly, but he saved his very best for when it mattered mostand what a time to deliver. After three runs where he was finding his feet in top-level company, he absolutely exploded onto the scene in the Boodles Gold Cup, producing a performance that stunned the field and left no doubt about his staying power, class, and heart. At 15/2, he wasn’t the obvious pickbut under a masterful ride from Mark Walsh, he travelled sweetly, jumped smoothly, and surged up the hill to beat none other than Galopin Des Champs by 6 lengths Earlier in the season, he ran behind Galopin des Champs at Leopardstown and Punchestown, but Cheltenham showed us what he’s really made of Everything clicked on the biggest stage, and the result was one of the standout wins of the season. From solid runs to superstar status, this was the season he truly arrived. The question is will he win another Gold Cup? We’ll have to wait and see.

WOLF MOON has looked very promising in his three runs on sharp, flat tracks but there’s a strong suspicion that he’ll be seen in an even better light now switched to a more testing course and pitched intowhat promisesto be a strongly-run handicap The main dangermaybeJohn Barbour, who raised his game when chasing home stablemate Serious Challenge at Southwell where Sorceleur and Kientzheim were behind. That said, Serious Challenge and Sorceleur both merit a good deal of respect, too.

SATURDAY 5 JULY
For the second year running, the race to be crowned Champion Jump Trainer in Britain comes down to the final day here at the bet365 Jump Finale.
Dan Skelton arrives with a narrow lead of under £25,000 over defending champion Willie Mullins, with a massive £685,000 in prize money still to play for today.
Mullins, bidding to retain the title he won last year – the first Irish-based trainer to do so in 70 years – brings 21 runners to Sandown, while Skelton is represented by just nine.
Skelton, speaking during the week, reflected on what has already been a landmark season. “We’ve had a great year – unbelievable, really We set out to win between £3.3 and £3.4 million in prize money and we’ve passed that. If we get beat, I won’t feel disappointed. We made Willie raise his bar, and that’s something I take pride in.”
Skelton added, “We’ve never been champion before, never even been to the dance. But we’ve shown we can get into a fight, and we won’t lie down. We’ll go to Sandown with our chins up and give it our absolute best.”
Mullins, meanwhile, has come late to the party, but a stunning Grand National result, with five of the first seven home, put him firmly back in the hunt. “It’s tough for Dan – he’s done everything right,” Mullins said. “But this is our way of doing things, finishing strong. Dan has the points on the board, but anything can happen.”
He added, “We had a fantastic day here last year, and we’re looking forward to it again. It’s not Irish vs British – it’s about great horses and a great day of racing.”
As the season reaches its climax, Sandown Park is proud to host a title decider worthy of the stage – with racing fans set for a thrilling conclusion to a dramatic trainers’ championship battle for the second year running.
RACE DESCRIPTION: Initially, the weights in this two mile, six and a half furlong steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards are allocated on the basis of age and sex, before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 4lb for a Listed or Grade 3 victory to 6lb for a Grade 1 or 2 success.

With Paul Townend in the saddle, the six-year-old was held up in the rear for the early goings before pushing up the field two out. Taking the lead with ease he moved clear of the field to score

RACE DESCRIPTION: The highest class race this afternoon is a Grade 1 steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards to be run over one mile, seven and a half furlongs. Grade 1 races are the equivalent of the Premier League in football, quite simply there is no higher level, so these types of races usually attract the crème de la crème from Britain and Ireland and occasionally France. There are no penalties in a Grade 1 race with each runner carrying 11st 10lb although mares do receive a 7lb allowance.
Nicky Henderson’s Jonbon rounded off another tremendous season, following up his successes in the Tingle Creek here and the Melling at Aintree to win this contest for the second season running. With Nico de Boinville onboard yet again, Jonbon produced another stunning performance to take the win in a stacked field. Can he make it three in a row this year!

As we reach the end of the National Hunt season, all eyes turn to Sandown Park and one of the biggest Jump racing meetings of the year – the bet365 Jump Finale. This fixture is the traditional end point for the Jump season and as such we get to celebrate everything that has taken place in our current season and look forward to what the next has in store
Our feature race is the bet365 Gold Cup Handicap chase, run over three miles and five furlongs. The race was first run here in its current format in 1957 and is a race steeped in history and heritage, much like the fixture it takes place at.
The first winner of the race was Much Obliged in 1957. Back then, the race was known as the Whitbred Gold Cup due to its sponsorship by Whitbred Brewers.
From there the race has grown into the prestigious handicap that we see today with horses such as the mighty Arkle, Mill House, Diamond Edge, Desert ‘Dessie’ Orchid and Tidal Bay all putting in tremendous performances to lift the trophy. NoperformancewasmorespectacularthanthatofArklein1965 Despitehislofty weight of 12st 7lbs (a weight not seen today on course) he took down a talented field in what is defined as one of the greatest weight-carrying performances in racing history.
The race’s most successful trainer to date is Fulke Walwyn who has won the race seven times. His first winner was in the second running of the race courtesy of Taxidermist in 1958 before, in 1967, Mill House produced another stunning weight-carrying performance off of 11st 11lbs to win the race This would be Mill House’slastmajorwinonaracecourseashewasretiredthefollowingseasondue to consistent injury issues.
Itisimpossibletoflickthroughthehistoryofthebet365GoldCupwithouttaking a moment to talk about racing’s beloved ‘Dessie’ Desert Orchid His beautiful white-like appearance ensured he was a fan favourite throughout the 1980s and a win here in 1988 under top weight only further enhanced his reputation as a true great of Jumps racing. He would go on to win four King George VI Chases, a Tingle Creek Chase and, of course, the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1989.
Recent years have also seen some memorable renewals Tidal Bay was another hugely popular horse among racing fans, and he was yet another horse to win this race off of top weight under the guidance of Daryl Jacob in 2012 His uncharacteristically high head carriage meant that he was a challenging ride, but his abundance of talent was more than enough to compensate.
Father and son duo, Peter and Sean Bowen teamed up for a family affair in 2017 thanks to Henllan Harry and in 2022 Hewick took the short trip over the Irish Sea to plunder the race for his trainer Shark Hanlon. Hewick would go on to win both the American Grand National and the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase.
Closutton maestro Willie Mullins saddles ten of the twenty horses declared for this year’s renewal including; last year’s winner Minella Cocooner who will again be partnered by Danny Mullins and other leading contenders High Class Hero, Grangeclare West and Dancing City Victory last year secured his first British Trainer’s Championship – will it do so again in 2025?
History tells us that this race can produce superstars and we wait with bated breath to see if another steps up to the mantle this year
RACE DESCRIPTION: This historic event is a handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards run over three miles, four and a half furlongs. Unlike most other handicaps there are no ratings restrictions here, so some classy performers may be tempted to take part in a race that has a rich history. However, the same principle of handicapping exists, so a horse officially rated 145 carries 5lb more a horse rated 140.

MOSTLY SUNNY looked right back to his best when winning at Plumpton on Monday and he can defy a 6lb penalty for title-chasing Dan Skelton. Winner of this race in 2024, Ike Sport shaped encouragingly at Aintree last time and looks set to make a bold bid to defend his crown, while Got Grey also looks to be coming to the boil at just the right time.
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £545,684 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from 29th March to 22nd June 2025.

Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
