SATURDAY 8 JULY 2023
OFFICIAL RACECARD £5
We are incredibly proud to sponsor the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes for the forty eighth year, and with every passing year our pride in this enduring sponsorship magnifies
The world of betting has changed immeasurably over the last few decades from primarily cash betting in shops through the seventies and eighties, to the growth in telephone betting in the 90s, and then the arrival of the internet and digital betting on mobile phones which has flourished since the turn of the millennium. Yet Coral’s association with this historic horse-race has stood the test of time through all these periods of change as a demonstration of our unwavering commitment to horse racing, and the very best that this sport has to offer
Our strong and pro-active partnership with Sandown Park and The Jockey Club has ensured that The Coral-Eclipse has strengthened its position as one of the pre-eminent Flat races in the world with a distinguished roll of honour. Whilst the race can sometimes come up short in numbers it is always deep in quality.
Coral’s sponsorship of the Eclipse Stakes has its roots in the distant past, but when it comes to the present we are continuing to innovate in the way we activate our flagship sponsorship. We worked with the Jockey Cam team to stage a re-creation of the Coral-Eclipse Stakes that enables racegoers to ride as a jockey by wearing Virtual Reality Headsets on our Coral VR Experience Stage here today
Coral has also launched the first free-to-join racehorse ownership club
The Coral Racing Club – that gives Coral customers the chance to experience what it’s like to own racehorses, and we have Coral Racing Club gazebos around the racecourse where racing fans can sign up to join the club. We currently have 8 racehorses in training and over 100,000 members, and thirty lucky members have won the chance to attend Sandown Park today in a special Coral Racing Club Lounge with full hospitality and great views of the racing.
Our Coral mission is to get our customers closer to the action, and this great sponsorship, and initiatives like the Coral VR Experience and our exciting Coral Racing Club, are just some of the ways we are looking to achieve this
I’d like to thank you all for coming and hope you have a great day!
The marquis event of our summer Flat Racing Calendar, today’s card features an exhilarating lineup of seven races, including the Group One Coral-Eclipse A key event in Racing Calendar, and part of QIPCO British Champions Series, the Coral-Eclipse’s captivating combination of speed and endurance often draws international entries, making it one of the most eagerly anticipated races of the season.
Its rich history includes wins for some of the true greats of Flat racing, including Mill Reef (1971), Brigadier Gerard (1972), Dancing Brave (1986), Nashwan (1989), Sea The Stars (2009) and Enable (2019). Vadeni won the race last year with a late run that saw him edge out Mishriff and Native Trail in a thrilling renewal. In winning he became the first French-trained horse to win the race since Djeddah in 1949.
This year could also see a fourth win for a Filly with Emily Upjohn likely to go off favourite. Pebbles (1985), Kooyonga (1992) and Enable (2019) are the previous three Fillies to have achieved this feat
I would like to take this opportunity to extend our deepest thanks to Coral for their ongoing support since 1976, making them the world’s longest standing sponsor of a Group One race We hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable day here with us
In addition to the exceptional racing, we encourage you to savour the diverse range of dining and refreshment choices available at our various outlets. Indulge in a multitude of options located in Surrey Hall within the Grandstand, as well as concession stands scattered throughout the racecourse, including additional cocktail bars and ice cream carts. For those seeking a more luxurious experience, upgrade to the Premier Enclosure, where you can relish in an exceptional dining experience, a champagne bar, and the finest views of the racecourse and finishing post
Stick around after racing for a live DJ set from Capital FM’s Chris Stark right next to the Parade Ring The set will start as soon as racing concludes and is free to all racegoers.
Sandown Park is always striving for opportunities to support our local communities and so this year we are excited to announce the “Donate A Dress” campaign in collaboration with Princess Alice Hospice Racegoers are encouraged to donate any unwanted clothing items in good condition at the Hospitality Collection Desk situated in the main Grandstand throughout the day or directly at the Princess Alice Hospice shop on Esher High Street All donations will be collected and sold in Princess Alice Hospice shops, generating funds to provide support to patients and families in need.
Thank you for joining us for the Coral-Eclipse Summer Festival, we wish all our racegoers and connections a wonderful day and the very best of luck

Whichever horse wins the 2023 running of the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse, will be a direct descendent, through his male line, to ECLIPSE, foaled in 1764.
Perhaps the greatest racehorse of all time, and after whom the race is named, he raced a total of 18 times resulting in a victory on each occasion.
He was already a 5-y-o when he contested his first race at Epsom Downs in 1769 and with no horse able to compete with him, he was retired to stud after just three seasons. The lineage chart, shown here, depicts the impact ECLIPSE has had on the thoroughbred breeding lines and, it is estimated, 95% of thoroughbreds can be traced back to this great horse. From this year’s Grand National winner, CORACH RAMBLER, to the current highest rated Japanese bred racehorse, EQUINOX, and the winners of each of the four Classics run in Great Britain and France and the three run in Ireland to date in 2023, his DNA is present.
Each of today’s runners can trace a previous Eclipse winner in their pedigree, either from the dam’s or sire’s side, most notably SADLERS WELLS, whose only Group 1 victory in Great Britain came in the 1984 running and who is related to five out of the six of today’s runners.

PLAY SMARTER
Lots of collateral form to assess and this looks very open, but ANNAF confirmed that he’s as effective on turf as the AW when an excellent third in the King’s Stand at Ascot last time. Stall 11 could have been better but he’s still just about the most persuasive option. Raasel won this race last year and he’s a threat eased in class, with Tiber Flow likely to be keeping on back in trip even with his penalty

MAGICAL SUNSET shaped significantly better than the bare result in the Sandringham and looks set for a big run. Stenton Glider, runner-up in the German 1000 Guineas last time, is a big player, while Back See Daa could improve again to take a hand up in grade.
This year sees the 126th running of today’s feature race, the Coral-Eclipse. It’s Group 1 status, the long-standing support from its sponsor, its integration into QIPCO British Champions Series and position in the racing calendar have seen it draw some of the biggest names from across the racing world and this year we celebrate a few of those anniversaries
Roaring Lion became one of the most popular winners in recent years when just edging out Saxon Warrior in a battle for the ages. Trained by John Gosden, and ridden by Oisin Murphy, the colt was one of the most popular horses in training throughout the 2018 season and went on to win the Juddmonte International, Irish Champion Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes later that same year Upon retiring he went on to undertake his first season as a Sire before sadly falling ill with colic and passed away in August 2019. His only crop of foals have recently been seen on racecourses across the country.
Al Kazeem was a late bloomer in terms of his full racing potential, but when it shone through it really shone through and none more so than in the CoralEclipse Stakes in 2013 His win saw him defeat Mukhadaram and The Fugue, both top flight horses in their own right on route to a memorable victory. After winning the Coral-Eclipse, he went on to score placed efforts in the Juddmonte International and Irish Champion Stakes At the end of that season he was retired to stud but, early in 2014, it was announced that he would make a return to the track due to fertility issues at stud Whilst not ever quite back to his full best in his second stint, he did secure Group race success in the Prix d’Harcourt and was second in a battle for the ages with Noble Mission in the QIPCO Champion Stakes
One of this year’s most poignant anniversaries is Daylami winning the CoralEclipse 25 years ago, back in 1998. The standout grey edged out Faithful Son in what was a 1-2-3 that year for Owners Goldolphin. He was the only previous Group 1 winner in the field that day and gave Frankie Dettori his first win in the Coral-Eclipse.ThisyearwillseeFrankieDettoriretirefromthesaddlehavinggone on to win four Coral-Eclipses across his career. After a stellar career on the track, Daylami was retired to stud where he went on to live a long and happy career before passing away earlier this year in April at the age of 29
30 years ago saw Opera House give Sir Michael Stoute his first ever win in the Coral-Eclipse. As of today he is the joint-winning most trainer in the race’s history having gone on to dominate the race after Opera Houses’ victory – winning four of the nine runnings between 1993-2001 In typical Sir Michael Stoute fashion, Opera House did all of his best work later in his career and in the same year as winning the Coral-Eclipse he would also win a Coronation Cup at Epsom Downs and a King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. He was named Champion Older Horse in 1993 for his endeavours and retired at the end of that season
Scottish Rifle holds a unique place in the history of the Coral-Eclipse as he was the only horse to win the race staged at Kempton Park. In 1973 Sandown Park underwent development across the site which meant most of its key races were transferred to Kempton Park, including the Brigadier Gerard Stakes which was also won by Scottish Rifle that same year. He was trained by legendary trainer, John Dunlop and his Coral-Eclipse win would be the most significant win on the horses’ CV before he was then retired.
Ahead of Emily Upjohn’s run in this year’s Coral-Eclipse, Ben Cox takes a look at the profiles of the three Fillies to have won the race before.
This year sees the feature Coral-Eclipse run for the 127th time, with one of the leading fancies being Emily Upjohn.
Perhaps surprisingly, the previous 126 editions of the 10-furlong contest have been won by fillies or mares on only three occasions.
Ifsuccessfulthisafternoon,EmilyUpjohnwilljoinaveryselectbandofsuccessful females in the Group One highlight…..
Although a Classic winner as a three year old in 1984 when she landed the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, the Clive Brittain-trained Pebbles took her form to evengreaterheightsin1985.ShebeganherfouryearoldseasonatSandownPark in April when landing the Trusthouse Forte Mile and arrived at the Coral-Eclipse as a 7-2 chance. Partnered by Steve Cauthen, Pebbles created history by coming home two lengths clear of Rainbow Quest and becoming the first filly to win the Coral-Eclipse She was then rested until the autumn when she returned with astunningvictoryintheChampionStakesandthenendedhercareerwithvictory in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Aqueduct, USA – again making history by becoming the first British-trained horse to triumph at the Breeders’ Cup.
Trained in Ireland by Michael Kauntze, a former assistant to Vincent O’Brien, Kooyonga was a dual Group One winner as a three year old in 1991 with victories in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. As a four year old, she had been disqualified when first past the post in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot. Starting the 7-2 favourite in the Coral-Eclipse, there were no problems at Sandown Park as she came home a length and a half to the good over Opera House in the hands of Warren O’Connor.
The greatest British-trained mare seen so far this century, Enable won 11 Group One races during her career Homebred by Prince Khalid Abdullah and trained by John Gosden, Enable already had two Prix de l’Arc de Triomphes, an Oaks, a King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and a Breeders’ Cup Turf under her belt when she made her five year old debut in the 2019 Coral-Eclipse
Partnered as usual by Frankie Dettori, the 4-6 favourite saw off another female in Magical for an ultimately comfortable three-quarter length success-story by becoming the first British-trained horse to triumph at the Breeders’ Cup.
RACE DESCRIPTION: This one mile and two furlongs race for three-year-olds and upwards is a Group 1 contest; the highest level of racing. Group 1 races attract the very best horses from Britain and Ireland and occasionally from as far away as France, Australia, South Africa or the USA due to the large levels of prize money available. Victory in a Group 1 race is the pinnacle for owners, trainers and jockeys and those horses that are capable of racing competitively at this level often go on to have lucrative careers at stud. Named after a legendary 18th-century racehorse called Eclipse, it has been run since 1886 and sponsored by Coral since 1976.

For the second year running, the winner of the Prix du Jockey Club came home victorious in one our most prestigious race, as Vadeni narrowly clinched success. Supplemented for £50,000, connections clearly knew their three-year-old colt had a major chance despite the good-to-firm ground going against him. He became the first French-trained winner since Javelot in 1960 following a superb ride from Soumillon, who kept him covered up in behind until the right moment, to just deny the globe-trotter Mishriff by a neck.

PLAY SMARTER
There could be more to come from MUSTAZEED, who has landed back-to-back Newbury handicaps for his newyardthis season and a 5lb rise forhis latest success doesn’t look at all prohibitive. Lord Protector returned to form from out of the blue when touched off by Paradias over C&D and it would be no surprise were he to reverse the placings with that rival and emerge as the main danger The booking of Ryan Moore is an obvious plus where Majestic is concerned and he is also accorded respect.

At Sandown Park Racecourse we believe racing should be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. Whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather

In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business
Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the public enclosures Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without prior accreditation being obtained. Flash photography is not allowed anywhere on the Racecourse as it may distract or frighten horses.
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
