Britain’s Most Prestigious Evening Meeting
THURSDAY 25 MAY
OFFICIAL RACECARD £3.00
Welcome to Sandown Park for Brigadier Gerard Evening racing where we commemorate the legendary Brigadier Gerard, a true icon of the turf.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Racehorse Lotto for its generous support here at Sandown Park, including all six races across this evening’s card Colloquially known as London’s Night At The Races, this evening continues to be the highest value evening race meeting in the country.
Dating back to 1953, the Group 3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes, formerly known as the Coronation Stakes, was renamed in 1973 to pay tribute to the incredible Brigadier Gerard, who triumphed in 17 of his 18 races. Regarded as the best British-trained horse of the 20th century, his impressive victories include the 1971 2000 Guineas and the 1972 Coral-Eclipse
Trainer Sir Michael Stoute, a name synonymous with success in this race, has won the race an incredible 12 times, including last year’s victory with Bay Bridge who went on to win the Champion Stakes at Ascot. This year Desert Crown runs for the famous trainer, making his first appearance since winning last year’s Derby at Epsom Downs, nearly a year ago
The Group 3 Racehorse Lotto Henry II Stakes is another feature of the evening, a leading trial for the Ascot Gold Cup. Past winners include Dee Ex Bee, Big Orange, Double-Trigger and three-time winner Persian Punch
Away from the track, there is no shortage of food and beverage options to try as you take in the racing from any of the on-course vantage points We have a variety of options located in the Surrey Hall in the Grandstand as well as concession stands throughout the racecourse. Be sure to join us for live music after racing as well when Stringin’ It perform a lively set in the main grandstand
Looking ahead we have another double-header on Friday 16 & Saturday 17 June followed by the unmissable summer spectacular Coral-Eclipse weekend on Friday 7 & Saturday 8 July. We recommend purchasing tickets for all our fixtures well in advance through our website www thejockeyclub.co.uk/sandown Hospitality packages and restaurant bookings are still available for the Coral-Eclipse Summer Festival but are selling out fast.
I hope that you have a fantastic time at Sandown Park today and wish the horses and their connections the very best of luck

A case can be made for lots of these but SILASTAR still looks ahead of his mark raised 7lb for his 12-length Leicester success so gets the vote Miss Bluebelle was in fine form on the AW when last seen out and could emerge as the chief threat after her break, although the returning Lady Reset is another who can have a say along with Nonsuch Lad, Regal Rambler and Motataabeq.

The Racehorse Lotto Henry II Stakes is one of today’s feature races and is the longest race on today’s card at 2 miles in distance. It provides an excellent early-season opportunity for horses that might be seeking glory in races such as the Ascot Gold Cup later in the season.
The race gets its name from King Henry II. In the 12th century a priory was founded on the site that is now Sandown Park by King Henry II and that piece of our history is embodied in this race title which has been run here since 1963.
The stamina-sapping 2-mile test is not for the feint-hearted and hence the reason it attracts horses that are looking to go onto big things in the staying divisions of British racing.
Two of the races most notable winners were Double Trigger and Persian Punch who won the race two and three times respectively in the late 90s and early 2000s. Double Trigger’s CV contained three Goodwood Cups, three Doncaster Cups, an Ascot Gold Cup and this race on two occasions which makes him one of the most successful horses to have ever competed in the race Persian Punch, winner in 1997, 1998 and 2000 is not far behind him on that list having also won some of the country’s biggest staying races in his career
More recently, fan-favourite Big Orange was a very convincing winner in 2017 under the expert guidance of Frankie Dettori, the race’s winning-most jockey with six wins. Big Orange himself also went on to secure a memorable win in the Ascot Gold Cup later that year
Last year’s winner, Quickthorn gave Hughie Morrison his second win and Tom Marquand his first ever win in the race and we look forward to seeing who will come out on top this year in what promises to be another excellent renewal.

SATURDAY 8 JULY
The Racehorse Lotto Brigadier Gerard Stakes takes place on the richest and most prestigious evening of racing in the UK. Brigadier Gerard evening, as well as the race itself are steeped in recent history and have provided a stepping-stone for many extremely talented horses.
The race is named after one of the greatest horses that Flat racing has ever seen – Brigadier Gerard. His remarkable run of wins included some of the greatest races in the UK such as the 2000 Guineas, Lockinge Stakes, St James’s Palace Stakes and, of course, the Eclipse Stakes here in 1972. His total of 17 wins from 18 starts is a record that anyone would be enviable of.
Upon his retirement in October 1972, this race today was named in his honour and was first run in 1973.
The 1 mile 2-furlong distance and the time of year make the Brigadier Gerard Stakes an ideal return race for last year’s leading three-year-olds, seeking to get their four-year-old campaign up and running.
It’s hard to pick out any one horse from the race’s illustrious roll of honour, but it is hard to see past Workforce who won the race in 2011 having won both the Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 2010 His trainer, Sir Michael Stoute has perfected the art of harvesting this race over the years, with Bay Bridge’s win in last year’s race providing him with his twelfth success in the race.
Opera House, Notnowcato, Workforce, Poet’s Word and Bay Bridge are just some of the names to have succeeded for one of the most successful Trainers of all time.
Sir Michael Stoute will be looking to make it 13 wins this year with the same triedand-tested method, as Desert Crown looks set to take his chances in today’s race The 2022 Derby winner hasn’t been seen since his stunning performance in that race nearly a year ago and is one to watch very closely today.

PLAY SMARTER
All eyes will be firmly affixed to the unbeaten DESERT CROWN, who makes his eagerly-awaited comeback in a race that his yard has won with several high-class performers in recent years. The Nathaniel colt was most impressive in the Derby on just his third career start last June and, though absent since owing to an injury, it’s unlikely that he will be found wanting fitness-wise. Cash could be the one for the forecast, given that Hukum is likely to find this trip too sharp

A cracking handicap which may be best narrowed down to the 3 lightly-raced improvers in the field. YAANAAS has run a cracker in an Ascot handicap since defeating Quantico in a Kempton novice last month and can get the better of Archie Watson’s charge again. Assessment won impressively on his Kempton handicap debut and should also be in the thick of things.
