The first Royal Artillery Steeplechase meeting was held in 1862, so this year marks our 161st Anniversary and the 138th running of the race, having lost a few opportunities through war, weather and Covid!. The race was first run at Sandown Park in 1878 and we are most grateful to the Directors of Sandown Park for the support they continue to provide.
The Royal Artillery Gold Cup remains a unique regimental race for amateur jockeys, and we, in the Gunners, are proud to be the only regiment in the British Army to hold its own race under Rules at a premier national racecourse. We could not do so without the support of so many, including our owners and trainers and, of course, our loyal Gold Cup sponsors, Castel, who have been with us since 2018. Royal Artillery Gold Cup Day is of course more than just the Gunner Gold Cup, and we are indebted to sponsorship from Weatherbys. Support today has also come courtesy of local businesses Healix, Audley Chaucer Solicitors and Rolfe Judd.
In the Gold Cup today, we see Rolling Dylan ridden by Major Charlie O’Shea attempting to repeat last year’s victory and so replicate Rathlin Rose’s double with Captain Guy Disney in 2017 and 2018.
Gunner Gold Cup Day is the largest gathering of serving and retired Gunners of all ranks in our Regimental calendar. In addition to the excellent racing I hope you will enjoy the pageantry of The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, the music of the Pipes and Drums of 19 Regiment Royal Artillery, the Garrison Volunteer Artillery and the parade of hounds of the Royal Artillery Hunt and all others who make today so special.
Today we are delighted to again work with the Royal Artillery Charitable Fund, which helps so many former Gunners and their families in physical, mental and financial need. Many of those attending today have seen active service in UK and around the world; others are not here because they are currently deployed at home and abroad. We wish them all well.
We hope you have an enjoyable day. Thank you for coming and we look forward to seeing you again next year.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.
How the experts rate the horse’s chances:
2. BHA rating = the higher the number, the better the horse
3. Timeform view and TFR rating
4. HORSE’S TRAINER & THEIR LOCATION
Look out for the summary of leading course trainers before each race.
Listen out for any jockeys who are having a successful day.

Working alongside the Racecourse Association (RCA), bookmakers have introduced standard each-way betting terms across Jockey Club Racecourses. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.
- Fewer than 3 runners: win bets only, no places offered
- 3 or 4 runners: all to win. Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position he may offer place terms for 3 or 4 runners, this must be at 1/5 odds a place 1-2
- 5 to 7 runners (inclusive): 1/4 (one quarter) odds for finishing 1st or 2nd
- 8 or more runners: 1/5 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd
- Handicap races with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive): 1/4 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd
- Handicap races with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive): 1/5 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th
- Handicap races with 22 or more runners: 1/4 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th
The highest-class race on today’s card is the Grade 2 Jane Seymour Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle which, this year, will see its 11th running.
The race was inaugurated in 2013 as a Listed Race before, in 2016, the race was upgraded to Grade 2 status – the grade it is still run at today. The promotion of its status came in the same year that the Grade 1 Dawn Run Mares’ Novice Hurdle was introduced at the Cheltenham Festival The simultaneous upgrade of status with the introduction of the Grade 1 at The Festival created an enhanced winter/spring programme for Mares, providing them with additional opportunities for success at the highest level.
The race itself is named after Jane Seymour, third wife of King Henry VIII who gave birth to their son, and future King of England, Edward VI at Hampton Court Palace, just a short distance down the road from the racecourse.
In its Listed years the race was won by Utopie Des Bordes, Tagrita and Uranna, the latter of which was the first and only Irish-trained winner of the race to date
In 2016 – its first year as a Grade 2 – the race was won by Jesseber’s Dream who was trained by Harry Fry and ridden by Noel Fehily Six years later that same partnership would team up again for a second victory in the race albeit performing slightly different roles Love Envoi, the winner, was again trained by Harry Fry but Noel Fehily took the role of Syndicate Manager as the Noel Fehily Syndicate secured their first ever Graded winner. Love Envoi went from strength to strength in her 2022 campaign and capped it off with a win in the Grade 1 Dawn Run at the Cheltenham Festival, showing the relevance of the Jane Seymour as an important stepping stone for promising novice mares Love Envoi was the first and only horse so far to complete that double We wait with anticipation to see what this race year has in store and whether another superstar will emerge from the ranks
Five go to post for this afternoon’s feature, the Weatherbys Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide Jane Seymour Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle, a race which Jamie Snowden won in 2021 with Anythingforlove
The Lambourn-based trainer is enjoying a fine season and he saddles You Wear It Well who bids to further boost the form of the Challow Novices’ Hurdle. Those who like the chance of Hermes Allen in next month’s Ballymore at Cheltenham will be pleased to have seen Passing Well (4th), Marble Sands (5th), Kilbeg King (6th) and Crambo (P.U.) win in recent weeks, and You Wear It Well ran a career-best to finish runner-up in the Grade 1. She is now rated 133 after that performance and sets the standard.
A Catterick bumper winner a year ago, she won her first two starts over 2m as a hurdler and appreciated the longer trip at Newbury It will be a surprise if the daughter of Midnight Legend, who seems versatile in terms of ground, isn’t involved in the finish.
Gordon Elliott’s Deeply Superficial is the first Irish-trained runner in the race since Urana was successful for Willie Mullins in 2015, when the race was still a Listed contest (upgraded in 2016). Another fascinating contender, she cost £385,000 on the back of a Point-to-Point success and impressed when winning what appeared to be a decent maiden hurdle at Galway The form of that race didn’t work out quite as expected, but she also then took on geldings in Graded company, finishing just over 5 lengths off Inthepocket at Naas. That form is strong and she has had a wind-operation since.
A non-runner at Navan on Sunday, her connections will be hoping for a bit of rain (a little is forecast) and she looks to be the chief danger to You Wear It Well.
Dan Skelton runs two, with brother Harry opting to partner She’s A Saint, who is the most experienced hurdler in the field, having had five runs Twice runner-up at Listed level, she beat a subsequent winner at Ffos Las last time but will likely need to improve again.
Skelton’s other runner, Vicki Vale, was pulled-up in the aforementioned Challow at Newbury and has since been beaten at short odds. She had looked good when winning on Rules debut at Hereford, but is another who appears to have a bit to find with the principals.
Nicky Henderson won the very first running of this race (10 years ago) with Utopie des Bordes and his Touchy Feely completes the line-up The wellbred daughter of Kayf Tara, who is out of the classy race mare Liberthine, is unbeaten in two starts over hurdles and won’t mind the ground, although this does represent a big rise in class.
Last year’s race was won by Love Envoi, who won the Dawn Run Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham on her very next start and heads back to the festival as a leading contender for this year’s David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle

Successful on each of her first 2 starts over hurdles, YOU WEAR IT WELL cemented the positive start made when runner-up to Hermes Allen in the Grade 1 Challow at Newbury on her latest start. Open to further improvement, she earns the vote to come out on top here, with Irish raider Deeply Superficial and She’s A Saint next best.

The Royal Artillery Gold Cup is one of the oldest events in the Racing Calendar. The inaugural event was held in 1862 and, following in the footsteps of the Grand Military Meeting, which was first held in 1841, the meeting immediately proved extremely popular with members of the Regiment.
The first winner was a horse by the name of Chickahominy, ridden by Captain John Ruck-Keene. He was owned by George Arbuthnot, a famous Royal Artillery Officer (Lieutenant) of the time who had a long and distinguished career in the Regiment and was recommended for the Victoria Cross during his service in India in the 1850s.
Sandown Park first hosted the meeting in 1878 which was notable for the success of Swift, who provided Lieutenant Henry Dalbiac with the second of four consecutive winning rides in the race Dalbiac was another colourful character of the early days of the Gold Cup. He served in several of the Imperial campaigns that took place in the late 1800s and thereafter became the subject of Kipling’s famous work “The Jacket”.
In 1949 after a period of ten years without the race due to the outbreak of War in Europe, the Royal Artillery Gold Cup was run again. Times were still hard, with the majority of the Army serving overseas. The popularity of the meeting remained strong, but the availability of suitably qualified jockeys was a problem and in 1960 the decision was made to open the race to former as well as serving Gunners More recently past and present members of the Armed Forces have qualified to ride
In 1978 the race was privileged with the presence of former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Ten Up, given to Major James Hodges by his godmother, the Duchess of Westminster By then enjoying a more sedate life in hunter chases, Ten Up proved that the old class was still there by landing the Royal Artillery Cup in 1978, 1980 and 1982.
Lance Bombardier Sally Randell becoming the first woman to win the Royal Artillery Gold Cup in 2011 on Surenaga under the ownership of 100 Yeomanry Regiment RA(V). Sally moved on to training racehorses and, together with Fergal O’Brien, they are strong supporters of military racing
Jennys Surprise took the 2016 renewal amid emotional scenes in the winners’ enclosure The eightyear-old looked well beaten but rallied under pressure to deliver a ‘dream come true’ win for Brodie Hampson in her first ride in the race The feat was made even more special as Brodie was riding for her father, who was given just 30 days to live at the beginning of December Sergeant Mark Hampson, who served in 47 Regiment Royal Artillery for 22 years, was ‘chuffed to bits’ to see his daughter win for the first time in his colours. He sadly passed away just three months later. Brodie continued to do him proud in 2019 riding a perfect race on Carlos De Fruitier to give her two Royal Artillery Gold Cups to her name and she is back again this year.
Captain Guy Disney and the David Pipe-trained Rathlin Rose made history in 2017 and 2018, becoming the first dual winner since De Pluvinel Guy, who lost his lower right leg when his vehicle was hit by a grenade while serving in Afghanistan in 2009, was the first amputee jockey to win at a professional racecourse in Britain.
Major Charlie O’Shea, a serving Gunner Commando, returns this year on Rolling Dylan, having won the race in 2022 Charlie suffered life-threatening injuries after being stood on in a fall at Wincanton on their military race day, 10 months ago.
A unique event in the Racing Calendar, it is a credit to the Committee that the Royal Artillery Gold Cup is as popular as ever Without their commitment and fortitude, and the wonderful support of Sandown Park, the annual gathering would surely be but a distant memory It remains one of the Royal Artillery’s flagship days, hugely enjoyed by the Regiment and the racing public alike and long may it continue to be so
A talented horseman with a background in racing and the military.
Ben grew up in Devon and his passion for horses first took him into racing as a conditional jockey with Martin Pipe. In 1999 he joined the Army, becoming a Mounted Gunner in The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery Here he served a full and successful career, retiring only in June 2022 as a Staff Sergeant.
As a soldier, he rode at Larkhill a number of times, including winning, on a gun team horse in the Troop Race at the Royal Artillery Point-toPoint. His was a well known face at Sandown Park from 2001-2004 when as a Gunner and then Lance Bombardier he rode in both the Grand Military Gold Cup and Royal Artillery Gold Cup, finishing 4th on the late Queen’s Braes Of Mar trained by Nicky Henderson in 2001.
At The Troop he was a lead driver of a gun team on a number of state ceremonial occasions and as a Number 1 in charge of F Sub Section, he took part in the Salute to open the Olympic Games in London and rode on parade on the Diamond Jubilee.
Selected to become a riding instructor, he oversaw the rejuvenation of equestrian sport in the Royal Artillery as the senior military riding instructor at Larkhill, and later at the Defence Animal Centre at Melton Mowbray. He was highly competitive and won the Services Show Jumping at Olympia in 2017 but also competed eventing and tent pegging.
He returned briefly to racing in 2017 winning the Pertemps Champions Wilberry Charity Race at Cheltenham, to raise money for a cancer charity in support of his daughter who was suffering from leukemia at the time. Ben had his own battle with cancer, which he fought incredibly bravely and patiently over a number of years, but it returned recently and he tragically lost the fight on 1 February 2023, aged 45. He leaves behind his partner Trish and his daughter Grace and a great many friends in the world of racing and military equitation.

PLAY SMARTER
Plenty are in with a shout. AMRONS SAGE caught the eye when a strong-finishing second at Ludlow last time and looks to have got in lightly for his handicap bow so is fancied to emerge on top. Hat-trick seeking Missed Tee also looks to have better days ahead of her and is feared most, although recent handicap scorers Equinus and Twin Power can’t be taken lightly either in a competitive event.

BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment.
