STAR RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race

Good chance of being placed.

By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating

TODAY’S TIPS

DID YOU KNOW: Clive Cox has a 22% strike-rate at Salisbury during the last five years (21-96), showing a level stakes profit of £14.18 The Lambourn-based trainer is represented by Cool Dividend (5.40) and Taswara (7.45) today.

RACE ONE

KING OF SPEED was forced to concede first run to the winner when second at Ffos Las 11 days ago, having been short of room inside the final two furlongs Mark Loughnane's gelding ought to be more than capable of going one better on that evidence and he shades preference over the consistent Okeanos Bear To Dream can follow that pair home ahead of Joy Choi.

WIN: KING OF SPEED

RACE TWO

DANGER: OKEANOS

MAFNOOD made a pleasing start to his racing career when fourth over an extended six furlongs at Newbury last month. It would be no surprise to see the son of Kingman take a step forward with that experience under his belt Hot Fuss was far from disgraced in the Chesham last month and a similar performance would bring him firmly into the reckoning. Cool Dividend appeals most of the newcomers.

WIN: MAFNOOD

RACE THREE

DANGER: HOT FUSS

Roger Varian has a good recent record in this contest and, though well beaten at Leicester on debut last month, it might be worth siding with DUBAI DREAMER The son of Dubawi might prefer further in time, so this drop in trip isn't certain to suit, but that previous experience should stand him in good stead. Decisive Call appeals most of the remainder, while Miss Requinto ought to make her presence felt

WIN: DUBAI DREAMER

RACE FOUR

DANGER: DECISIVE CALL

ALEXANDRETTA was last seen hitting the frame at Kempton in September when shaping with plenty of promise and she is taken to score on her return. If she falters, the one that could capitalise may be Mother Mary, who is entitled to improve for her debut experience at Nottingham and now moves up in trip Photon makes his first start on turf and could get involved after a third at Kempton.

WIN: ALEXANDRETTA

RACE FIVE

DANGER: MOTHER MARY

It is hard not to be taken with Entrancement's success at Goodwood last time, but she has been hit with an 11lb hike, so can be taken on with MISTRAL STAR The daughter of Frankel stayed on strongly to beat a decent field here last month and she could continue her upward curve to defy an opening rating of 80. Mlle Chanel has to be respected following an encouraging effort at Ascot when last seen.

WIN: MISTRAL STAR

RACE SIX

DANGER: ENTRANCEMENT

Runner-up on his last three starts, a first-time visor could seal the deal for BRABUSACH and he can deliver a bold showing here. The son of Profitable is rated 3lb higher than his most recent run, but that may not be enough to stop him. The booking of Luke Morris is an additional positive for the improving gelding and he can get the better of the unexposed Flammable, who makes her handicap debut Taswara heads the remainder following an improved fourth at Bath last month.

WIN: BRABUSACH

RACE SEVEN

DANGER: FLAMMABLE

There has been no stopping MR FREEDOM of late and the four-timer seeking gelding is the one to beat following a staying-on success over an extended 1m3f at Windsor earlier this month. A 4lb raised mark may not be enough to halt his progression and he gets the vote at the main expense of Lexington Knight, who reverts to turf following a success at Newcastle.

WIN: MR FREEDOM

Liseo is another to consider in a first-time visor

DANGER: LEXINGTON KNIGHT

I am particularly pleased to continue our sponsorship of the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai - Racing Excellence Apprentice Handicap Series here at Salisbury Racecourse for the 2023 season.

This is a very unique series which will help mould up and coming riders in so many ways. Discipline and respect are the foundation of this series and with the guidance of George Baker, it will be of enormous benefit to the next generation of jockeys into the future.

Salisbury is a racecourse close to my heart as when I was living in the UK as a young man, I visited the track on many occasions and hold some wonderful memories of the venue.

Our investment into this series compliments our other Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai sponsorships across the UK in Newmarket and York.

Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai would like to offer our congratulations to the Board and Management at Salisbury Racecourse on this terrific initiative and wish all those who participate, every success as this series plays out over the summer months.

RACING EXCELLENCE APPRENTICE SERIES AT SALISBURY

The five race Racing Excellence Apprentice Series at Salisbury is generously sponsored by Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai. It is specifically designed to assist the education and training of new and inexperienced jockeys

The first race in the Series on 18th May was won by Liam Wright on the Malcolm Saunders trained Redredrobin at 7-2. The second race in the Series on 18th June was won by Alex Jary on the Daniel & Claire Kubler trained Moondial at 7-2. After today’s race, the remaining races in the series are on 16th August & 7th September

A points system operates throughout the Series and is allocated as follows:

1st – 5 points; 2nd – 3 points; 3rd – 2 points; 4th – 1 point

Additional points are awarded by the jockeys’ coach for presentation, professionalism, course familiarisation walk and riding ability.

At the end of the Series the top three riders in the Series will receive prizes as follows, kindly provided by Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai.

1st - £1,500 2nd - £1,000 3rd - £500

The current scores are as follows:

Racing Excellence runs alongside the Jockey Coaching Programme (JCP) and is the industry accreditation for all apprentice and conditional races which run under hands and heels or training race conditions. Initially set up by The British Racing School as ‘Support for Young Jockeys’ in 2006, the BHA re-branded the scheme in 2010 as ‘Racing Excellence’

In February 2014 The British Racing School took over the management of Racing Excellence and The JCP The latter gives all Apprentices and Conditionals the opportunity to have a coach. All coaches who are all ex-Jockeys can be on hand to help with fitness, riding technique, nutrition and race reviews A coach will attend every Racing Excellence race to conduct the pre-race course walk and then will also debrief afterwards.

DECLARED RUNNERS 9

Raceform Median Time: 1 min 30.50 secs

2022: MARBAAN 2 9 11 Shane Kelly 10-11 (Charlie Fellowes) 12 ran

Stewards Note: TRAVOLTA: Following its run on 24/6/2023 it was reported that the horse hung left-handed under pressure.

Betting Forecast: 11-10 Hot Fuss (IRE), 11-2 Mafnood (GB), 17-2 Cool Dividend (IRE), 10-1 Travolta (GB), 11-1 Mortlake (IRE), 16-1 Harvard Sound (IRE), 28-1 Solar Power (GB), 40-1 The Ferret (GB), 100-1 Head’s Gone Pal (GB)

Race Summary: HOT FUSS ran a blinder in the Chesham and probably won’t need to match that level of form to open his account at the third attempt. Mafnood is worth considering following a positive start and Breeze-Up recruit Cool Dividend has the potential to be above average, so he’s one to monitor in the betting.
