FRONT COVER IMAGE: QUDDWAH (yellow silks) wins the Novice Stakes over seven furlongs for three-year-olds at the opening meeting of the season on Thursday.
ABOVE IMAGE: GRENHAM BAY (red and green silks) is successful in the three-year-olds six furlongs handicap
OPPOSITE IMAGE: EAGLE COURT (dark green silks) wins for owner Alan Potts. Alan had his first ever winner here at Salisbury – back in 1981 - 42 years ago to the week.
A warm welcome to Salisbury for our ‘Coronation Weekend Family Race Day’.
We are delighted that you have chosen to come to the races today, as we acknowledge that there is lots going on this weekend, in celebration of the big event. The weather is forecasted to stay dry, which is great news.
The first race meeting of our season took place three days ago. It is always good to open the gates and welcome back our customers, industry colleagues, and participants (both two-legged and four-legged), after the long seven months that we do not race.
Our thanks to trainer Andrew Balding and his wife Anna-Lisa for kindly sponsoring our races this afternoon. We gladly welcome some of their Kingsclere team, owners, and business partners, but Andrew himself will be at Newmarket, for the featured race meeting there. We will be showing the QIPCO 1,000 Guineas on the screens around the course, which will include previous Salisbury winners, Remarquee and Polly Pott, in the line-up. Thank you again for supporting us today. The directors and staff hope that you have a very enjoyable afternoon.
Best Wishes

17 A guide to the horse’s recent form
STAR RATING EXPLAINED
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race
Good chance of being placed.
By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating
Diamond Cottage was a close-up third over this trip at Wolverhampton last time and could have a say running off the same mark, but she may be up against it to beat MARSH BENHAM, who ran with credit on his return at Bath in this grade over a mile. The four-year-old was dropped 1lb for that effort, which puts him 2lb below his last winning mark and is likely to go close for top amateur Simon Walker First Company is another to consider
WIN: MARSH BENHAM

WIN: VOODOO RAY
RACE THREE
DANGER: SUZI'S CONNOISSEUR
Saratoga Gold improved by 16lb last season and has to be respected on his return to action, but he could find it tough to beat SIR RUMI, who goes off top weight after scoring by a length at Epsom last month and was raised 4lb for that victory. The five-year-old gelding now steps back up in trip and will prove tough to pass for the Richard Hannon yard Mr Inspiration could improve for the step up in distance and has more to come on only his sixth start.
WIN: SIR RUMI
DANGER: SARATOGA GOLD
Andrew Balding would like to win a race named after his stable staff with Blue Point filly Enchanting, but she lacks racecourse experience and Bath winner JUNIPER BERRIES is preferred after her impressive display. She might be able to give weight away all round with any improvement for a stable currently in good form. Denruth Diamond ran green when third at Windsor on her debut and is another who could get involved where it matters.
WIN: JUNIPER BERRIES
RACE FIVE
DANGER: ENCHANTING
Kyle Strysom is a jockey we will hear more of on these shores, having come over from South Africa, and he rides Green Go for Roger Varian. He could find the ground on the soft side, though, in which case
NEW BUSINESS may be the one. Well supported and sent off favourite before coming home third at Newmarket, he drops back a furlong now which may prove ideal. Eyeshadow is bred for the part, being a daughter of Expert Eye out of a Galileo mare, and is certainly one to watch.
WIN: NEW BUSINESS
DANGER:EYESHADOW
A small but select field where top-weight Crystal Casque warrants some consideration as a dual course winner She would need a career best off this mark, even with Oliver Searle's 7lb claim, but she might have to give way to PALM LILY. Ralph Beckett's filly competed unsuccessfully in better races after winning her maiden and may find this company more to her liking. Mile End intrigues after winning twice in Ireland and could be worth a market watch ahead of her UK debut
WIN: PALM LILY
DANGER:CRYSTALCASQUE
LOVING FEELING is bred to be smart and his debut third at Windsor wasn't without promise when keeping on late for third. The step up in trip is a big plus on this occasion and the son of Sea The Stars may have too much for Ibrahimovic, who ran a creditable race when third on his second start at Newmarket last month. Goodfella's juvenile form entitles him to be thereabouts as well.
WIN: ; LOVING FEELING
DANGER: GOODFELLA
The Eve Johnson Houghton stable can do little wrong at present and LADY OF ARABIA must hold every chance if building upon a comfortable success at Kempton in December A mark of 72 on her handicap debut looks feasible and she gets the vote ahead of Eyetrap, who wasn't for catching from the front at Nottingham, and the consistent Mirabello Bay. Alba Longa and Scenic cannot be ruled out either
WIN: LADY OF ARABIA
DANGER: EYETRAP

PLAY SMARTER
TAHIYRA looked very good when comfortably accounting for Meditate in the Moyglare and is selected to prove too strong for her old rival again, although Aidan O’Brien’s filly was well suited by the step up to 1m in the Breeders’ Cup and may get a bit closer this time. The fact Remarquee still looked far from the finished article in the Fred Darling raises a few doubts about how she’ll handle the Dip but she must be highly talented and is third choice ahead of Dream of Love.

Race Summary: PRENUP has taken her form up a notch for new connections this year, so Jane Chapple-Hyam’s 4-y-o gets the tentative vote to double her tally at the expense of Rose Prick, who makes her seasonal reappearance after 6 months off and can resume progress back in handicap company.
