LIZ BARKER Racecourse Administrator JAMES HUTCHINSON Managing Director JONATHAN MULLIN Operations + Marketing SARA MARTIN Catering Manager AMY RYAN Raceday Presenter CARL TONKS Head Groundsman CHARLES YOUNG Raceday Administrator JANE HUTCHINSON Commercial ManagerHello and a very welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse for what promises to be a great evening of racing!
Our feature race this evening is the 6f weatherbysshop.co.uk Handicap at 7.40 which features the two previous winners of the William Hill Great St Wilfrid, 2022 winner Intrinsic Bond and 2021 winner Justanotherbottle, who is also the 6f course record holder. Add to the mix Fortamour, a three-time winner here, Bay Breeze, who is unbeaten in three runs over course and distance and Twelfth Knight, who got the better of Fortamour here last time and the race looks very competitive indeed.
We have £6000 up for grabs in the William Hill Ripon Champion Bonus this season and the current leader, Another Baar, is on seven points with two wins and a third-place finish here already this season. Cockalorum has two Ripon wins to his credit this campaign and heads the chase with six points.
Wishing you a wonderful evening and we hope to see you again for our double header later this month. Our meeting on Wednesday evening 21st June features the Best Dressed Gentleman competition sponsored by Harrogate Town AFC and Ladies Day on Thursday 22nd June is always one of the highlights of the season with fantastic prizes from Grantley Hall and Jenny Roberts Millinery.
Very best regards.

MUST CATCH UP (7.10) trained by P Robson, Hawick, distance of 248 miles
PALIO (6.10) trained by A King, Barbury Castle, distance of 233 miles
NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 5th June
Richard Fahey lifted this prize 12 months ago with subsequent Prix de l’Abbaye winner The Platinum Queen and he could repeat the dose with ALGHALIB. The son of No Nay Never, a 160,000-euro purchase, should not lack forspeed on his racecourse debut and is, perhaps crucially, drawn high. Desert Master would hold every chance if returning to the form that saw him chase home Ziggy’s Phoenix over C&D in April, while Knicks heads the remainder.
WIN: ALGHALIB
DANGER: DESERT MASTER
Having bolted up on his racecourse debut in April, ROGUE SEA lost nothing in defeat when finishing second to an improver at Nottingham last month. Tom Clover’s colt sets the standard with an official rating of 83 and is likely to be difficult to beat, providing he handles conditions which are the fastest he will have encountered to date. Blinkered for the first time and upped in trip, King Me could take a step forward, while Page Three can chase them home.
WIN: ROGUE SEA
DANGER: KING ME
Despite being repeatedly short of room from the two furlong marker, LUDO’S LANDING powered home to strike at Carlisle on Friday. Charlie Johnston’s charge must saddle a 6lb penalty for that success, but that might not stop him if arriving in the same mood. Flame Spirit made a winning handicap debut at Wolverhampton last time out and he merits respect back on the turf, while it would be no surprise to see improvement from the Simon & Ed Crisford-trained Laser Guided.
WIN: LUDO’S LANDING
DANGER: : FLAME SPIRIT
It could be worth siding with CONCEITO off a break, given she remains unexposed and is fancied to build on her three runs from last season. She sports first-time cheekpieces for her handicap bow and warrants a market check, along with Rockonmecca, who steps up in trip following a fair third at Musselburgh most recently. Patriot’s Choice is another to bear in mind.
WIN: CONCEITO
DANGER: ROCKONMECCA
Only narrowly denied over 5f at this track in April, a drop in class can see INTRINSIC BOND defy a 2lb rise here and Tracy Waggott’s six-year-old appears the one to beat. However, he is now rated 4lb above his last winning mark, which came over C&D last August, so Bay Breeze can give him plenty to think about off 4lb higher for his latest success atThirsk. Recent C&D winnerTwelfth Knight completes the shortlist.
WIN: INTRINSIC BOND
DANGER: BAY BREEZE
Previous course winner LORD CAPRIO is effective under both codes of racing and he appeals strongly in a race that might well be run to suit. Oasis Prince strikes as a prime candidate to set a decent tempo, which would play to the strengths of the selection given his penchant for swooping late with his challenge. Haizoom is back on a winning mark and is also of interest on debut for Charlie Johnston.
WIN: LORD CAPRIO
DANGER: OASIS PRINCE
BIRKENHEAD is competitively weighted and can hold sway over old rivals, Albegone (seventh) and Soul Seeker (thirteenth), who were both behind the selection when he won off this mark at York last summer. Having already proven he still has lots to offer by going in again on the all-weather on his penultimate start, the Paul Midgley-trained gelding looks the one to be with here. Mereside Angel and Caribbean Sunset both have scope and are feared most.
WIN: BIRKENHEAD
DANGER: MERESIDE ANGEL

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

This five furlongs Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds who are EBF eligible but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.

This contest is a Restricted Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of one mile and two furlong. There are a variety of reasons why the three, four and five-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

This is a one mile race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 55 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 50.

ROCKONMECCA has shown improved form sent handicapping this season, running well when third at Musselburgh last time, so she can continue her progress in first-time cheekpieces to get off the mark. Blue Antares should still have more to offer on only his second start in a handicap and could be the main danger, ahead of Rubellite.

Eight sprinters have been declared for race five on this evening’s card, the weatherbysshop.co.uk Handicap, a class 3 (0-95) contest over six furlongs and five of the octet are previous course-and-distance winners.
One of those is top-weight Intrinsic Bond, who won the Great St Wilfrid Handicap at this venue last August. Now just 4lbs higher, Tracy Waggott’s six-year-old ran well over a furlong shorter and on softer ground, at this track in late-April. Only grabbed late on, he finished runner-up in this corresponding race last year and ought to appreciate both going back up in distance and the sounder surface. Connor Beasley is back on board for the first time since that Great St Wilfrid success
The 2021 Great St Wilfrid went the way of Justanotherbottle, who has only won twice since, both over this course-and-distance. He was a long way behind Intrinsic Bond here earlier in the season and also when fifth when attempting to defend that Great St Wilfrid crown last August, but he has plummeted in the weights since and is another who should appreciate the drier conditions. A course specialist, he could bounce back to form this evening, as he often takes a run or two to reach his peak.
Bottom-weight Fortamour is another of the previous course-anddistance winners, although Ben Haslam’s seven-year-old has finished behind both Bay Breeze and Twelfth Knight in races at this track already this year That pair are improving four-year-olds who arrive here on the back of recent wins, so have to be respected, with Twelfth Knight having won two of his three starts for trainer Ruth Carr The Haatef gelding appears to be on a roll and has more scope for improvement than most, having had just 13 starts on turf He is just 2lbs higher than when beating Fortamour by a length a month ago
The nine-year-old Gulliver represents David O’Meara, but his winless run goes back to October 2020, whilst It Just Takes Time and Leap Abroad complete the line-up The former ran well when fourth over a shade further at York’s Dante meeting recently and seems versatile in terms of ground, whilst the latter – who carries the silks of Middleham Park Racing – hails from the stable of Paul & Oliver Cole and has been in consistent form this season, in three starts at Newmarket (twice) and Newbury.
The son of Gregorian has dropped to a mark of 87, which was his last winning mark, with that victory coming at Newmarket just under a year ago. Another lightly-raced four-year-old, he has plenty more to offer and is another who will likely improve for meeting quicker ground. Apprentice jockey Mohammed Tabti continues in the saddle.

This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

This is a two miles handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight of 8st 4lb and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
