LIZ BARKER Racecourse Administrator JAMES HUTCHINSON Managing Director JONATHAN MULLIN Operations + Marketing SARA MARTIN Catering Manager AMY RYAN Raceday Presenter CARL TONKS Head Groundsman CHARLES YOUNG Raceday Administrator JANE HUTCHINSON Commercial ManagerGood afternoon and a very warm welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse for Traditional Family Day!
We welcome Wooden Spoon for their annual charity raceday. The charity is dedicated to helping children who are disadvantaged physically, mentally or socially by using sport to improve their lives. Please check out page 12 of the racecard for more details of the great work the charity does.
Our award winning Stables Championship is beginning to hot up with Adrian Keatley’s team leading the way on 32 points after a spate of best turned out awards. Last year’s runners-up, Team Johnston and last year’s winners Team Easterby are in hot pursuit and both are represented today, so will be looking to close the gap.
There are plenty of activities to entertain the children over in the Course Enclosure with Professor Dan’s Punch ‘n’ Judy and Magic Show, balloon modelling, face painting, cub karts, bouncy castle, inflatable slide and the National Festival Circus. We also have the Ripon City band playing on the bandstand.
Wishing you a wonderful day and we hope to see you at our next meeting on Thursday 1st June.
Very best regards.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 19th May.
Previous C&D winner FORESEEABLE FUTURE heads the shortlist after making all to land a 0-75 handicap at Ayr 17 days ago, and must have a strong chance of following up off just 4lb higherwith leading apprentice Benoit De La Sayette booked for the ride. Ben Macdui is dangerouslywell handicapped and is noted, while Canaria Prince andVan Gerwen are also considered.
WIN: FORESEEABLE FUTURE
DANGER: BEN MACDUI
VALADERO, who was second in both the Brocklesby and a Thirsk maiden, has proven ability and can put his experience to good use in an attempt to make it third-time lucky There are a few interesting newcomers in opposition, though, with Strong Request, a half-brother to decent sprinter Crispy Cat, the most appealing on paper. Asadna and Sergeant Mayer are also worth a second look.
WIN: VALADERO
DANGER: STRONG REQUEST
Ripon has been a happy hunting ground for William Haggas and the Newmarket handler can enjoy more success at the Garden Racecourse courtesy of the progressive MARKET VALUE, who made a pleasing reappearance when third in a decent novice stakes at Haydock last month. Stepping up in trip looks a good move for this half-sister to Evaluation, a useful staying handicapper, and a big run can be expected. Jo’s Rainbow and Bosc Girl are the dangers.
WIN: MARKETVALUE
RACE 4
DANGER: : JO’S RAINBOW
MR BUSTER found only the progressive Wonder Legend too strong at Wolverhampton last month and, given the winner subsequently bolted up off a rating of 81, Ralph Beckett’s charge appears to have been let in lightly off an opening mark of 80. Radetsky Marsch is likely to have more to offer now entering handicaps and isn’t taken lightly, with the in-form pair Laser Guided and Roaring Legend also worthy of consideration.
WIN: MR BUSTER
DANGER: RADETSKY MARSCH
FORTAMOUR, who was somewhat unlucky when coming clear on his side of the track when fourth over C&D last month. The seven-year-old won this contest last year off 5lb higher and he is handicapped to go well, with Twelfth Knight, a winner at Redcar on his penultimate start, looking best placed to chase him home. Count D’Orsay and Rich Waters are capable of being in the shake-up as well.
The selection is
WIN: PINAFORE
DANGER: COCO JAMBOO
Runner-up on four of his last six starts, ISLE OFWOLVES deserves a change in luck and he can get that on this occasion with conditions expected to be in his favour at a track that should suit. He is now 3lb below his last winning mark and that may be enough to see off the likes of Little Ted and Young Winston, who wasn’t beaten far at Wolverhampton last time out.
WIN: ISLE OF WOLVES
RACE 7
DANGER: LITTLE TED
This can go the way of STORMY PEARL, who ran encouragingly on her return at Redcar last month in a contest that has produced several winners subsequently. Rebecca Menzies’ charge likes to be prominent and is drawn well in stall three, where she could take some catching. Well-bred Doncasterwinner HighfieldViking can follow her home, along with Jack Of Clubs for the in-form Michael Dods team.
WIN: STORMY PEARL
DANGER: HIGHFIELD VIKING

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

PARK FARMThe Wooden Spoon Society began on the rugby field in 1983 when England finished bottom of what was then the Five Nations Championship. Since then, “Spoon” – as it is now affectionately known – has grown into one of the UK and Ireland’s fastest growing charities dedicated to helping children and young people who are disadvantaged physically, mentally or socially by using sport to improve their lives while harnessing the spirit and values of rugby. The charity is one of the largest funders of respite and medical treatment centers, sensory enhancement therapeutic facilities, specialist playgrounds, sports activity areas, and community based programmes in the United Kingdom and Ireland. In partnership with the rugby community, both Union and League, we involve some of rugby’s top sporting role models who provide support and help in raising awareness of its invaluable work
The charity comprises of 38 regional volunteer committees, a national HQ team, and over 10,000 members who wear its distinctive tie representing the colours of the 4 Home Nations. Regional committees undertake local fundraising activities with the money raised being spent on projects within their local community. This year, the Yorkshire Committee proudly celebrates 31 years since its foundation in May 1992, during which it has provided £2,290.144 of funding to 103 projects within the region.
Today, Yorkshire “Spoon” celebrates our 28th anniversary Race Day at Ripon. We particularly thank Paul Hammond of Hammond Associates and Martin Sterne of Sterne Properties for sponsorship of our two named races on the racecard. We also thank Spoon members James and Jane Hutchinson of the Ripon Racecourse executive, and the racecourse staff, for their continued and valued support.

This is a five furlongs restricted handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 and are yet to win a race this year To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 65 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60.

This one mile and one furlong contest for fillies and mares aged three-years-old is another maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 61 to 80 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares only which have been rated from 76 to 95. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 46 to 65 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
