EASTER FESTIVAL

MONDAY 21ST APRIL 2025

Official race programme £3.00

WELCOME

Welcome to The BetGoodwin Easter Weekend Raceday –Monday 21st April

It was a great day yesterday and today looks equally as good.

Welcome to the Easter Monday, we are excited to see you all on what is set to be a tremendous day and we do hope you had an enjoyable Easter Sunday.

Today marks the second of our Premier Racedays, with this year’s BetGoodwin Easter Monday Raceday featuring a prize fund of £247,500, highlighted by the £100,000 BetGoodwin Sussex Champion Chase.

For the second day Plumpton Racecourse is set to play a pivotal role in the 2025 Trainers’ Championship, with Willie Mullins and Dan Skelton vying for the title. Given the competitive nature of the championship, the outcomes at Plumpton today could be decisive in determining the 2025 British jumps trainers’ champion.

I would like to thank our Partners; BetGoodwin, Southern Cranes and Access Ltd and Strong Flavours for their tremendous support throughout the 2024/25 Season, along with today’s sponsors, Cappagh Brown Utilities Ltd, BetGoodwin, Gordon & Angela Ashdown, Southern Cranes & Access Ltd and Peter Savill.

Our main sponsor for the Sussex Champion Chase is BetGoodwin, a long-standing partner with whom Plumpton has built a fantastic relationship over many years. We are especially grateful to Julian Head for his generous support of this sponsorship.

We have a cracking 7 race card today, with 59 runners declared worth £247,500 of prize money our most expensive raceday in Plumpton’s history. Our feature race will be The BetGoodwin Champion Chase worth £100,000, which is £50,000 more than last year and our most expensive race ever. Last year we saw Scarface, ridden by Brendon Powell and trained by Joe Tizzard beat 2023 heroin Black Jerry by 4 lengths. This year’s renewal promises to be highly competitive, with 10 runners set to line up—including entries from both Willie Mullins and Dan Skelton. The field also features JPR One, the highest-rated chaser in the race, along with two former Sussex Champion Hurdle winners: Teddy Blue (2023) and Aucunrisque (2022).

Today, we’re excited to announce the winners and runners-up of the inaugural 2025 Plumpton Schools Art Competition—a new community initiative inviting local primary school children to create Easter and Plumpton Racecourse-themed artwork. Open to ages 5–11, the competition received over 100 impressive entries, judged by local artists Hui Hue and James Burke. They praised the creativity and joy in the children’s work, particularly the winners’ unique interpretations. The winning designs are now proudly displayed at Plumpton Racecourse’s North Entrance, adding vibrant colour to the space. This annual event aims to grow in 2026, with even more schools involved. Join us at the Parade Ring after the 5th race to celebrate the young artists’ achievements!

It’s a busy day here at Plumpton, with both enclosures open and a full schedule of entertainment. All our Family Entertainment is located in the Centre Course, and is accessible to all ticket holders, regardless of enclosure. You’ll find maps located around the racecourse—so be sure to take a look! With seven fantastic races and plenty of fun for all ages, it’s set to be an exciting day for the whole family.

Looking ahead, we still have our Season Finale, on 11th May. General admission tickets start from £14 with hospitality starting from £95 and can be booked or enquired by visiting www. plumptonracecourse.co.uk

Happy Easter to you all.

Have a great day at Plumpton, Heart Of The Community.

Best wishes

Jargon

Bit - A piece of metal that sits in the horse’s mouth and is attached to the bridle and reins

Blinkers - A type of headgear fitted to a horse that limits its field of vision, mainly from each side. Blinkers are designed to help horses concentrate in races.

Boxed in - When a horse cannot obtain a clear run during a race due to other horses being in close proximity.

Bridle - A piece of tack that fits over a horse’s head and to which the bit and reins are attached.

Bumper - Also known as a National Hunt Flat race, this race has no obstacles. Used as a way to give horses race experience before tackling hurdles and fences.

Chase - A race run over fences.

Cheekpieces - A form of headgear which consists of pieces of sheepskin placed on either side of the bridle and performs a similar job as blinkers in helping the horse to concentrate.

Clerk of the course - The person responsible for the overall management of a racecourse on a raceday.

Fences - The type of obstacle jumped during a chase race.

Furlong - A unit of measurement. A furlong is an eighth of a mile or a little more than 201 meters.

Going - The underfoot conditions at the racecourse.

Going Stick - A device used to measure the underfoot conditions at the racecourse.

Handicap - A type of race in which horses carry different weights depending on their overall rating, which is determined by the handicapper.

Hood - A type of headgear fitted over the horse’s head to cover its ears and muffle the noise of a raceday.

Hurdles - The obstacles jumped during a hurdle race. They are smaller than fences and therefore take less jumping. Sometimes referred to as flights.

Length - The length of a horse from its nose to the start of its tail, and a measurement used to describe the distances between horses at the finish line.

Maiden - A horse who has yet to win a race.

Neck - A measurement used to describe a winning margin in a close finish.

Non-runner - A horse withdrawn from a race for which it had been declared.

Novice - A race for horses who are in their first season in that code of racing.

Parade ring - The area of a racecourse where horses are paraded before each race.

Photo finish - A close race finish, requiring the raceday judge to consult a photo before declaring the winner.

Pulled up - A horse who is brought to a halt during a race by its jockey.

Pulling - A horse who is keen during a race and wants to go faster than its jockey is allowing.

Pushed out - Describes a horse who has gone clear of its rivals in a race after minimal urging from its jockey.

Staying on - A phrase referring to a horse who finished strongly during the closing stages.

Stewards’ inquiry - An inquiry held at the racecourse on a raceday after any given race

Tongue-tie - A strap used to tie down a horse’s tongue to prevent the tongue getting over the bit which affects a horse’s breathing.

Turn of foot - A term to describe marked acceleration during a race.

Under starter’s orders - Before a race, the starter brings the field of horses into order to prepare them for the start of the race

Weighed in - Every horse in a race has to carry a certain amount of weight. To ensure it does, all jockeys must weight in/out both before and after a race. The ‘weighed in’ announcement made after the race means the result stands.

A game winner over C&D on her penultimate start, LA DOLCE DOLLY proved that was no fluke when she shrugged aside a 4lb higher rating to follow up at Wincanton three weeks ago. A further 4lb rise might not be enough to prevent Andy Irvine’s mare from completing a hat-tick. Fellow last-time-out winner Gwennie May Star is feared the most, although Warranty and Kaituna River are also capable players.

SELECTION: La Dolce Dolly

2

3

4

6

Danger: Gwennie May Star

After a 37-length success at Ayr, ASTA LA PASTA is very hard to ignore. Admittedly, the selection’s task was made easier by the departure of his main rival three out that day, but he was barely extended in the closing stages and a 5lb higher mark is manageable. Sans Bruit also won well last time and could prove to be the main danger, although Westport Cove should not be discounted.

SELECTION: Asta La Pasta

Danger: Sans Bruit

NORN IRON looks to be the safest option based on his proven reliability. Well supported for a handicap contest at Newbury last month, Harry Derham’s gelding didn’t do much wrong as that race unfolded and was only denied by a neck at the line. Compensation is attainable with another step forward. The unexposed Roman Roy and Start Again are the logical players for the forecast slot.

SELECTION: Norn Iron

Danger: Roman Roy

WICKED THOUGHTS appreciated the faster underfoot conditions in maiden company at Ascot last month. He forged clear of his rivals in the closing stages and Paul Nicholls’ charge looks one to keep on the right side of now handicapping. Escapologist and Ambion View are others of interest on their handicap debuts, with the former marginally preferred, but Excelero bids for a hat-trick and may prove the biggest threat to the selection.

SELECTION: Wicked Thoughts

Danger: Excelero

LADY JAGO will likely be raised by more than her 7lb penalty in the future, having trounced the opposition when scoring at Warwick a week ago. The hat-trick beckons for Dan Skelton’s progressive chaser. Sea Invasion posted a better effort when runner-up at Exeter last time and could pose a threat if the application of headgear has the desired effect, while Fakenham winner Lyrical Genius is preferred of the remaining pair.

SELECTION: Lady Jago

Danger: Sea Invasion

Aggagio is talented on his day and he has won off this mark in the past, albeit back in 2023. He can still go well here, but if PUBLIC ENEMY takes a step forward from his maiden win over course and distance earlier this month, he could be the one to be on under Rex Dingle. Alan King’s Dickens and Synchronist are the pick for the minor prize money.

SELECTION: Public Enemy

Danger: Aggagio

Kajikia won a decent bumper at Ascot on his first start, although he was beaten a long way in a Listed race next time out and needs to bounce back. Willie Mullins is represented by the Yeats gelding Emerald Poet, but he is bred to be better over further and he may have to give way to LE BEAU MADRIK. Dan Skelton’s newcomer has more speed in his pedigree and that may see him come out on top.

SELECTION: Le Beau Madrik

Danger: Emerald Poet

GWENNIE MAY STAR took his form up a notch when scoring in first-time cheekpieces at Bangor 9 days ago and, with this step up in distance holding no fears, Dan Skelton’s charge can make it 3 wins from his last 4 outings. HORSE CARE AT PLUMPTON

At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.

It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Any individual contravening these rules will be evicted.
