Plumpton Racecard - Monday 15th December

WELCOME

Welcome to our final fixture of the year, The Christmas Jumper

Raceday.

With just 11 days until Christmas, the countdown is well underway, and we hope you enjoy a festive and memorable afternoon. We’ve been treated to excellent racing and thrilling finishes throughout the year, and your loyal support in all weathers has meant a great deal. Thank you, and we’re sure today will be equally exciting.

Today we have 46 runners going to post over 7 races with over £61k of prize-money on offer. Our feature on the track today is our second race worth £14,000, The G.E. White & Sons Agricultural Buildings Steeple Chase. We have 5 horses go to post and this year’s renewal promises to be highly competitive, and we extend our best wishes to all the horses and connections not only in this race, but across the entire day’s card.

I would like to thank today’s sponsors, Royal Arch Racing, G.E. White & Sons, Friends and Family of Maria & Nick, Old Gold Racing, Weatherby’s and Dawson Hart, along with our Partners; Southern Cranes and Access Ltd, BetGoodwin and Kalm Kitchen for their tremendous support for the 2025/26 Season. We wish you all have a tremendous day.

Be sure to visit the reindeer next to the Final Fence Restaurant and enjoy live music from Queue The Audio in the Paddock Bar.

Our next fixture is the Sussex National on Sunday 4th January. Last season’s renewal was won by Invincible Nao, and this year’s meeting will feature over £160,000 in prize money, alongside a full programme of family activities—including an ice-skating rink. As this is one of our most popular fixtures, we encourage you to book your hospitality and admission tickets early to avoid missing out.

Finally, today is my last raceday as CEO as I move on to pastures new. I want to thank the board, my team, our raceday staff, and all key stakeholders for their support and dedication over my three-year tenure—you have made my time here truly enjoyable. I now hand over to Guy Chadwell, who will begin as CEO on 12th January, and I wish him every success in the role.

Have a great day at Plumpton, Heart Of The Community.

Best wishes,

Stewards

Jargon

Bit - A piece of metal that sits in the horse’s mouth and is attached to the bridle and reins.

Blinkers - A type of headgear fitted to a horse that limits its field of vision, mainly from each side. Blinkers are designed to help horses concentrate in races.

Boxed in - When a horse cannot obtain a clear run during a race due to other horses being in close proximity.

Bridle - A piece of tack that fits over a horse’s head and to which the bit and reins are attached.

Bumper - Also known as a National Hunt Flat race, this race has no obstacles. Used as a way to give horses race experience before tackling hurdles and fences.

Chase - A race run over fences.

Cheekpieces - A form of headgear which consists of pieces of sheepskin placed on either side of the bridle and performs a similar job as blinkers in helping the horse to concentrate.

Clerk of the course - The person responsible for the overall management of a racecourse on a raceday.

Fences - The type of obstacle jumped during a chase race.

Furlong - A unit of measurement. A furlong is an eighth of a mile or a little more than 201 meters.

Going - The underfoot conditions at the racecourse.

Going Stick - A device used to measure the underfoot conditions at the racecourse.

Handicap - A type of race in which horses carry different weights depending on their overall rating, which is determined by the handicapper.

Hood - A type of headgear fitted over the horse’s head to cover its ears and muffle the noise of a raceday.

Hurdles - The obstacles jumped during a hurdle race. They are smaller than fences and therefore take less jumping. Sometimes referred to as flights.

Length - The length of a horse from its nose to the start of its tail, and a measurement used to describe the distances between horses at the finish line

Maiden - A horse who has yet to win a race.

Neck - A measurement used to describe a winning margin in a close finish.

Non-runner - A horse withdrawn from a race for which it had been declared.

Novice - A race for horses who are in their first season in that code of racing.

Off the bridle - A term to describe a horse not travelling well.

On the bridle - A term to describe a horse travelling well.

Open ditch - A fence with a ditch on the take-off side.

Outsider - A horse whose chance of winning is considered unlikely.

Parade ring - The area of a racecourse where horses are paraded before each race.

Photo finish - A close race finish, requiring the raceday judge to consult a photo before declaring the winner.

Pulled up - A horse who is brought to a halt during a race by its jockey.

Pulling - A horse who is keen during a race and wants to go faster than its jockey is allowing.

Pushed out - Describes a horse who has gone clear of its rivals in a race after minimal urging from its jockey.

Staying on - A phrase referring to a horse who finished strongly during the closing stages.

Stewards’ inquiry - An inquiry held at the racecourse on a raceday after any given race.

Tongue-tie - A strap used to tie down a horse’s tongue to prevent the tongue getting over the bit which affects a horse’s breathing.

Turn of foot - A term to describe marked acceleration during a race.

Under starter’s orders - Before a race, the starter brings the field of horses into order to prepare them for the start of the race.

Weighed in - Every horse in a race has to carry a certain amount of weight. To ensure it does, all jockeys must weight in/out both before and after a race. The ‘weighed in’ announcement made after the race means the result stands.

The fact ADONEDEAL sported a first-time hood suggested he might have the tendency to overrace and that adds further meat to the bones of how smart his five-length success at Southwell was. Olly Murphy’s charge raced prominently throughout and still managed to win with ease, so with a change of tactics he could be seen in an even better light. Opposition is thin, with Yasmina possibly the pick of the Andy Irvine pair, and Mild Magic at least has experience on her side. totewin: Adonedeal

toteeachway: Yasmina

James Owen’s Shantou Lucky struck over C&D on his penultimate start but his stablemate Jubilant makes more appeal of the pair as he lurks on a tempting mark. However, course winner ILLEGAL D’AINAY didn’t do himself any justice when favourite in a class 3 event at Fontwell in October and was kindly dropped 2lb. This represents just his second outing over fences and there could be a lot more in the locker.

totewin: Illegal D’ainay

toteeachway: Jubilant

It’s important to note that Manigod’s runner-up effort over track and trip last month may not be the most reliable piece of form as the race fell apart with the hot favourite not running to form. With that in mind, THE BOSS BEAR looks the way to go. The son of Doyen showed bundles of improvement to score in good style in a bumper at Fontwell in May and with Gary & Josh Moore sending out some smart recruits recently, he might be the one. Dr Waksman appeals most of the remainder.

totewin: The Boss Bear

toteeachway: Manigod

AVADA KEDAVRA comfortably scored at Taunton latest, making all of the running, and looks to have been found another very winnable opening. His supporters will be pleased to see that Brendan Powell keeps the ride and this gelding could dominate again in a small field. Enjoy D’allen and Drumheller can give the selection the most to think about but they might be playing for second.

totewin: Avada Kedavra

toteeachway: Enjoy D’allen

BIRDMAN BOB likes it around here and was super impressive when winning by 10 lengths over C&D on his penultimate start. A solid second here last time out in a conditional riders’ race, Andy Irvine’s charge makes plenty of appeal with in-form jockey Caoilin Quinn back in the saddle. Kitsilano was well held in second here at the beginning of the month but could still be the main danger, ahead of Summer In Milan.

totewin: Birdman Bob

toteeachway: Kitsilano

Any market support for Grand Conqueror would make him of significant interest on his handicap debut. The four-year-old has shown little to date but it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he took a decent step forward. Kool Kid has shown more promise than Neil Mulholland’s gelding but there is a slight concern about stepping up in trip. With that in mind, GOLDEN IDENTITY is taken to come out on top following a pair of solid efforts at Ffos Las and Hereford.

totewin: Golden Identity

toteeachway: Grand Conqueror

JOAN’S CHOICE improved from her first start when beaten a head at Wetherby towards the end of last month and that form arguably sets the standard. The five-year-old should appreciate the extra couple of furlongs on offer and gets the vote ahead of Skittish, who filled the runner-up spot at Sedgefield in October. Others to consider are Svelte Silhouette and Ledecka.

totewin: Joan’s Choice

It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.

Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. All equine care at Plumpton is provided by:
