HISTORY

PRIZE MONEY

£50,000 FORGIVE ‘N’ FORGET and THE THINKER both won the race in 1984 and 1986 respectively, and both went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup the following Spring.

The first Christmas meeting at Wetherby was held in 1940. Seventeen years later, in 1957, the Rowland Meyrick Chase had its first first running. Today is the 68th anniversary, and the 52nd running. Occasionally at the mercy of the December weather, the race was abandoned due to snow and/or frost for 5 years running between 1961 & 1965, and has been lost in total 15 times since 1957 due to weather, and once in 1967 due to the Foot and Mouth epidemic.

MERRYMAN II won the race in 1960, after having won the ﬁrst live televised Grand National at Aintree earlier that year. He was trained in Yorkshire by Neville Crump and ridden by Gerry Scott in both races.

ROWLAND FRANCIS MEYRICK

Rowland Meyrick was educated at Eton and served in the Boer War. He became a J.P in 1907 and was a Steward at Wetherby Racecourse from the ﬁrst decade of the 20th Century. Ackowledged as a ﬁne breeder of racehorses, he became Clerk of the Course at Wetherby between 1919 and 1947. He passed away in 1953 at the family home of Apley Castle, Wellington, Shropshire.
