WELCOME

Welcome to our Easter Weekend Raceday

Welcome to Plumpton and from all of the team we wish you a very Happy Easter. Today marks the second of Plumpton’s Premier Raceday, an exciting initiative driven by the BHA and one we have fully embraced. Premierisation is enhancing the quality, prestige and experience of certain dates in our racing calendar, meaning you have the chance to see top-quality horses and increased prize money! Today’s BetGoodwin Easter Sunday Raceday is our biggest ever prize pot, worth £200,000 boasting an increase of £87,000 compared to 2023. You will see several initiatives around the racecourse; at entrances, Parade Ring, CCTV and big screens and from our raceday announcer signposting premier racing.

I would like to thank our Partners; BetGoodwin, Southern Cranes and Access Ltd and Strong Flavours for their tremendous support throughout the 2023/24 Season, along with today’s sponsors, BetGoodwin and Strong Flavours.

We have a cracking 7 race card today, with 63 runners declared worth £200,000 of prize money. Our feature race will be the BetGoodwin Sussex Champion Hurdle worth £75,000, an increase of £25,000 from last year. Last year we saw a magnificent race, with Teddy Blue, ridden by Jamie Moore beating Get Back Get Back by a short head, with Aucunrisque a further three lengths third. The renewal this year looks very strong with 14 going to post including 2023 winner Teddy Blue and 2022 winner Aucunrisque.

Today we have Baron Alco, nickname ‘Barry’ in our Retired Racehorse Stable. He is our Retraining Of Racehorses (ROR) ‘Horses for Courses’ and we are delighted to welcome him to Plumpton. During his career he won a pair of Cheltenham bonus series races in the 2016/17 season for owner John Stone and defeated Frodon in the BetVictor Gold Cup. Make sure you pop over and give him a polo and a pat.

It is a busy day, and both of our enclosures are open. All of our Family Entertainment is located in the Centre Course so all ticket types have access to these rides and features. We have a map detailing all our activities in the centre pages of the racecard so please take a look. There is plenty going on for all the family besides the 7 fantastic races on course and so all fingers point towards an exciting day.

Looking ahead, we still have two further racedays, Sussex Day, 14th April as well as our Season Finale, Ladies Day on 12th May. General admission tickets start from £15 with hospitality starting from £80 and can be booked or enquired by visiting www. plumptonracecourse.co.uk

Happy Easter to you all.

Have a great day at Plumpton, Heart Of The Community.

Best wishes

CUSTOMER INFORMATION

Horse Care at Plumpton

At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.

Use of Screens

It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.

Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. All equine care at Plumpton is provided by:

Sussex Equine Hospital Billingshurst Rd, Ashington, West Sussex RH20 3BB

Unauthorised Bookmaking

It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Any individual contravening these rules will be evicted.

On-Course Bookmakers at Plumpton – Late Pay Service

If you need to claim winnings from an on-course bookmaker after a raceday, please send your ticket and covering letter to the following address:

BETTING INFORMATION

A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling.

1. Pick your winner!

There are many ways that you can pick your selection:

- Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses.

- Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper.

- Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. Where to place your bet

– In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.

– With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse.

– At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.

3. Place your bet

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet:

– Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off .

– Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings

– Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’. If you have any queries about your bet, please speak to the bookmaker or the Betting Ring Manager.

PLACE TERMS

All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than:

(a) for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win;

(b) for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2;

(c) for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2;

(d) for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3;

(e) for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3;

(f) for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and

(g) for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.

WHAT IS RULE 4?

Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price.

If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner.

The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

Official BHA Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

TODAY’S TOP TIPS

BENY NAHAR ROAD has previously fared well against stronger calibre opponents than he faces here and is readily suggested as the one to be with now returning to maiden company. Fourtowns has shown some ability in two previous starts over hurdles and can ensure the selection doesn’t have things all his own way if he continues to flourish. Night Stalker and Dancing Master complete the shortlist.

totewin: Beny Nahar Road toteeachway: Fourtowns

RACE

The hat-trick chasing ALTO ALTO appeals strongly based on a couple of hard-fought successes registered at this course and, having adapted well since being tried with the cheekpieces and tongue-tie combination, the seven-year-old gets the vote once again. Vicki Vale is feared on her chasing bow, while Kansas City Star is capable of a decent showing, especially with a firsttime tongue-tie applied.

totewin: Alto Alto toteeachway: Vicki Vale

RACE

3 A TICKATICKATIMING goes well at this venue and, having shown tenacity to land a mares’ maiden here when last seen, the six-year-old is a striking option here. Having gone well fresh in the past, the selection debuts in a handicap off a very workable mark and, with her course experience to draw upon, everything looks in place for a big run. All Authorized is effective at this level and is feared most, although support in the betting for Two To Tango would also be tempting totewin: A Tickatickatiming toteeachway: All Authorized

RACE

4 A few of these arrive in terrific form, perhaps none more so than MAKIN’YOURMINDUP, who completed a double at Newbury at the start of the month. Given that he has further scope for improvement over the larger obstacles, a subsequent 5lb rise might not be enough to stop him from landing the hat-trick. Recent Sandown scorer Rose Of Arcadia won’t go down without a fight, though, and nor will Any News, who arrives having been on target at Exeter in October.

totewin: Makin’yourmindup

toteeachway: Rose Of Arcadia

5 Teddy Blue landed the corresponding event 12 months ago from a 3lb lower mark and he must be respected in a bid to retain his crown, but a chance is taken on RARE MIDDLETON. He was able to put it all together when winning at Doncaster in December on just his third run in a handicap and looks set to continue his improvement in the retained tongue-tie. Gin Coco and Knickerbockerglory make plenty of appeal from their current handicap marks and must be taken seriously.

I See You Well returned to form with a solid second over hurdles earlier this month, but this drop in distance may be enough to prevent the veteran from regaining the winning thread. With that in mind, it may be worth taking a chance on I SHUT THAT D’OR. Although Joe Tizzard’s inmate hasn’t progressed as expected during his novice chase campaign, a subsequent wind procedure may unlock his true potential. Star Flyer could also prove dangerous if dictating the pace.

totewin: I Shut That D’or

RACE 7

toteeachway: I See You Well

First-time cheekpieces saw a career-best performance from last month’s Ascot scorer MOTHILL. A 5lb rise in the ratings looks more than fair for landing that 16-runner affair and Neil Mulholland’s charge is fancied to complete a double. Colours On Canvas warrants respect in his hat-trick bid over C&D, although a 10lb hike in the handicap will undoubtedly make life tougher for the five-year-old. Emailandy and Whatsupwithyou also merit a second look.

PREMIER PREVIEW

The team of Paul Nicholls and Harry Cobden are well represented this afternoon and will be looking to get off to a flyer in the opening maiden hurdle. Formerly rated 82 on the flat, Beny Nahar Road has chased home some smart types in defeat and, if learning to settle better, looks to have found a good opportunity to shed his maiden tag here.

Chris Gordon also sends a strong team to this meeting, and his Alto Alto bids to land the hattrick in race two. Both of his last two victories have come here at Plumpton, once over hurdles and once over fences, and he clearly loves it around here, now four from five at the track. Up 4lbs for his last victory, the runner-up has since boosted the form with a victory since, and he could still prove well-handicapped from this sort of mark. Useful handicapper Vicki Vale makes her chase debut for the Skelton team and the lightly raced seven-year-old could give the favourite most to think about

HARRY COBDEN WILL BE AIMING TO CONTINUE HIS GOOD FORM

HE’S BOOKED FOR SIX RIDES TODAY INCLUDING BENY NAHAR ROAD IN THE OPENER

if taking to the task on first attempt.

Chris Gordon also saddles Sea Invasion in the next race, with the six-year-old making his handicap debut from a tempting opening mark of 112. Although winless, he was just over five lengths behind Jeriko Du Reponet at Newbury on his penultimate start and got close to Supreme winner Slade Steel in his sole point, so that form would make him the one to beat here, with the step up in trip sure to suit.

Gary Moore’s All Authorized was runner-up off this mark on his penultimate start and, although he has his quirks, would rate a big danger if able to settle here.

The handicap chase in the middle of the card looks ultracompetitive but progressive novice Makin’yourmindup still has plenty of scope for improvement. The seven-yearold was a Grade 2-winning novice hurdler last term and has an abundance of stamina,

with this further step up in trip likely to eek out further improvement. He has won his last two starts against some smart novices, and a 5lb rise in the handicap may not be enough to halt his upward trajectory. Neil Mulholland’s Any News stayed on stoutly all the way to the line for a determined victory at Exeter when last seen and, although that was back in October, he does go well fresh.

The Sussex Champion Hurdle looks wide open but the unexposed Rare Middleton shapes as if he could be ahead of his current mark of 121. A strong traveller, the fiveyear-old couldn’t have been more impressive when a comfortable five-length winner at Doncaster last time and looks mightily progressive. Our Champ finished seventh in the Betfair Hurdle last time and is a course and distance winner; he will appreciate a return to better ground here and has been dropped 2lbs for that latest performance.

The likeable eleven-year-old

I See You Well shoulders top weight in race six but is a regular at Plumpton and has

won around here six times. Seamus Mullins’ charge is now 8lbs below his last winning mark, although this drop back in trip is not sure to play to his strengths. Warren Greatrex’s Star Flyer got off the mark over fences at Southwell in February but didn’t appear to see out the extended trip last time, so should benefit from this return to an intermediate trip.

Mothill has won two of his last three starts for Neil Mulholland and his game victory at Ascot last time is perhaps the best piece of form in the concluding handicap hurdle. This does require more up 5lbs but the six-year-old is uber-consistent and is likely to be in the frame again.

JAMIE MOORE

Over the last 20 years or so expectant racegoers have watched jump jockey Jamie Moore kick home winners at Plumpton as regularly as spotting planes flying into Gatwick. Unfortunately, that usual routine ended abruptly last autumn – in a bad fall at Lingfield on November 21, Moore sustained fractured vertebra, as well as some broken ribs, a broken nose, and head injuries. In February the wellrespected 39-year-old jockey, known as one of the toughest in the weighing room, had no other choice but to call time on his highly successful career.

His race-riding record lists 969 races won from 8,000-odd rides over 23 seasons with 112 of those (from 789 rides) coming at Plumpton.

He is the most successful jockey here behind only the recordbreaking 20-time champion jockey Sir Anthony McCoy –according to the Racing Post’s database they are the only two riders to have bagged over 100 winners here, although Tom Cannon is beginning to close in on 90.

After Fontwell, Plumpton has been the winning-most course in Moore’s career with the

significant achievement of riding both his first jumps winner – Blue Streak, winner of an amateur hurdle in November 2002 with Moore then yet to turn professional – and, nearly 21 years to the day, his last when he wasvictoriousina2m1fhandicap chase on board Kotmask. That success came just the day before his career-ending fall.

Bothofthosehorsesweretrained by his father Gary Moore, who is Plumpton’s leading trainer, and with the Moore family’s training establishment just half an hour away, they have always made the most of the opportunities at their local track.

“Plumpton has always been a very special place for us, it is a lovely track and we have a lot of runners here,” says Moore, who recalls: “As a kid I remember coming to watch Dad ride here, and then myself and Ryan [brother and leading Flat jockey] used to come to Pony Club camp at the course, we used to sleep in the hospitality boxes! The place is close to my heart.”

As a jockey Moore must have collected well over 2000 riding miles in his many efforts around the Sussex venue, and that track experience was not lost on him.

Jamie Moore lifts The BetVictor Gold Cup at Cheltenham after he had won the 2018 renewal onboard Baron Alco This was just one of many top races won by Jamie in a fantastic riding career

“I used to love stealing a march going down the hill,” he laughs. “The track suits a front runner and I used to like riding novice chasers round Plumpton – I always knew ours were well schooled, it meant they could crack on in front and they enjoyed being ridden like that.

“And when the going was real heavy – it now does not get as deep now having been drained – I used to love going against the hedge down the back straight, and then up against the rail on the home straight; I always knew I could steal some better ground.”

At the beginning of his career Moore collected a champion conditional jockeys’ title in the 2003-04 season. Over the subsequent years he won seven Grade 1 races (five on board the hugely talented Sire De Grugy who had such an important part to play in Moore’s career and who gave him a Festival success in the 2014 Grade 1 Queen Mother Champion Chase), and he enjoyed further big wins in races such as the Topham Chase, the Betfair Hurdle, the BetVictor Gold Cup, the Kingwell Hurdle, the Scottish Champion Hurdle, and the Scottish and Welsh Nationals.

He twice finished a bestplaced seventh in the jockeys’ championship, and the most winners ridden in a season was 80.

In 2023, he rode the winners of two of Plumpton’s three principal races – the Sussex Champion

Hurdle aboard Teddy Blue and the Sussex Champion Chase on Black Gerry. Teddy Blue is aiming to reclaim his Sussex crown today with Cannon riding (4.15), and, at the time of writing, Black Gerry and Kotmask were entered in tomorrow’s Champion Chase.

Moore reports that he is honoured his name is associated with the conditional jockeys’ race on tomorrow’s card (3.00) – and you can bet that if his Dad has one in the race, it will be doing its utmost to maintain family pride. Now back to full health and working in the yard, Moore admits that going to the races without his saddle and kit bag is feeling a little alien, and that it is taking him a little time to adjust.

“It doesn’t seem right and you don’t know where to go!” he laughs, adding: “Every ex-jockey says the same – when you are riding you just go to the weighing room and the track, there are huge parts of racecourses that you never get to.

“It is all a bit strange, but life’s a journey and this is just the next part of the journey for me.”

Jamie Moore enjoyed a fruitful partnership with Sire De Grugy over eight wonderful years. Here they are on their way to victory in the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown in 2015
