With the biggest Jumps Festival of the year in the same week, we of course want to acknowledge this at our fixture and as such we run our traditional Cheltenham Preview in the Chaser’s Bar. Hosted by Colin Brown, renowned commentator Simon Holt, ex-jockey Josh Moore and current stable jockey to Nicky Henderson Nico De Boinville all giving us their opinions it should be very informative, and we hope together they can find you some Cheltenham winners! With the preview starting at 12.45, make sure you get there early!
This is our third successive Monday raceday and would like to mention the terrific work both our raceday and groundstaff teams have invested. The weather over the past 3 weeks has certainly tried all our patience and it is great to see the track looking in great order.
I would like to thank our Partners; BetGoodwin, Southern Cranes and Access Ltd and Strong Flavours for their tremendous support throughout the 2023/24 Season. Our day itself is kindly sponsored by Betting.Bet and by Friends and Family of John Ellis and we wish them all a tremendous day.
We have a cracking card for punters to get their teeth into today, with 40 runners declared across 6 races worth over £61,000 of prize money. Our feature on the track today is our fourth race the £20,000 Class 3 the Nagsbet.com £10 free bet handicap race. Last year the race was won by Ramo beating Gerico Ville by 3 lengths. Today’s renewal looks to be very competitive with a select field of 4 and we wish all the owners, trainers and horses the very best of luck across the card.
Our next fixture will be Easter Festival, Sunday 31st March and Monday 1st April. If you are thinking of booking make sure you do this early as this is a popular racing weekend with both tickets and hospitality always in high demand.
Looking ahead, after the Easter Festival we will have only two remaining fixtures for the season our Sussex Day on 14th April and our Season Finale on 12th May. These are two popular racedays and will provide plenty of activities for everyone. Have a great day at Plumpton, Heart Of The Community.
Best wishes

At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.
During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.
The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.
It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.
Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. All equine care at Plumpton is provided by:
Sussex Equine Hospital Billingshurst Rd, Ashington, West Sussex RH20 3BB
It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Any individual contravening these rules will be evicted.

A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling.
1. Pick your winner!
There are many ways that you can pick your selection:
- Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses.
- Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper.
- Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
2. Where to place your bet
– In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.
– With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse.
– At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.
3. Place your bet
Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet:
– Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off .
– Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings
– Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’. If you have any queries about your bet, please speak to the bookmaker or the Betting Ring Manager.
All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than:
(a) for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win;
(b) for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2;
(c) for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2;
(d) for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3;
(e) for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3;
(f) for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and
(g) for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.
Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price.
If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner.
The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

CLOUD DANCER won a junior ‘National Hunt’ hurdle at Newbury last February which means he’s able to retain his novice status. His sole outing this season was a promising effort behind a leading Cheltenham Festival handicap fancy in Doddiethegreat at Ascot and stepping up in trip promises to yield improvement. His stable companion Johnny Jump Up made a winning start at Fontwell and commands respect along with C&D winner Fierce Warrior.
SELECTION: Cloud Dancer
Danger: Johnny Jump Up
SIR ROCK has improved for the switch to the larger obstacles having scored on both occasions over C&D and, more recently, at Fontwell in January. A 4lb rise for his latest success may not be enough to stop Toby Lawes’ gelding from taking another step forward. Elpologreg had plenty go right for him when getting off the mark at Fakenham last time. He is likely to be in the mix, while American Gerry has been given a chance by the handicapper.
SELECTION: Sir Rock
Danger: Elpologreg

SALVATORE has displayed some promise on his three hurdling starts to date and the application of cheekpieces once again, along with a tongue-tie, may see him step forward on his handicap bow. Sanitiser wasn’t disgraced when fourth at Kempton in November and appears likely to have more to offer. Garitsa Bay hasn’t shown much in novice hurdles but he has to be of interest on his first start in this company.
SELECTION: Salvatore
Danger: Sanitiser
JERRASH looks well placed to strike switching to hurdles for this assignment. Second over fences at Fontwell last time, that wasn’t a bad run but he wasn’t as fluent over his fences as his supporters would have liked so coming back over timber and dropping in trip looks ideal. San Pedro won over C&D two starts ago and heads the list of dangers from I See You Well.
SELECTION: Jerrash
Danger: San Pedro

RACE 6
BORN AT MIDNIGHT brings winning C&D form to the table which is key at a track like this. Providing this doesn’t come too soon after last week’s success, the nine-year-old is mostly consistent and looks up to going in again under a 7lb penalty. Delgany Monarch unseated his rider at Wincanton latest but it’s a positive that he’s back at the Sussex track given he won here in April last year. Flemen’s Tipple should run his usual honest race.
SELECTION: Born At Midnight
Danger: Delgany Monarch
COLOURS ON CANVAS remains an unexposed quantity and can continue on an upward trajectory despite the burden of top-weight. Stepping up in trip here last month unlocked another gear and, judged on his novice form, there are reasons to believe that the handicapper might not have caught up with him yet. The hat-trick seeking Nordic Tiger and Small Bad Bob appear to be the most obvious threats on paper.
SELECTION: Colours On Canvas
Danger: Nordic Tiger
Last Monday saw favourite backers get off to a dream day as the handy mare Looking
As You Are proved a level above in the Crystal Services Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle. Following up on her breakthrough win 26 days earlier, she excelled under Harry Banister, albeit carrying a penalty, and asserted her dominance by 10 lengths. Walkinthecotswolds picked up second, while Stuti had to settle for third.
The second race was a 0-115 handicap chase that saw a competitive field of 4 head to post. However the combination of Tom Cannon and Toby Lawes came out on top as Duhallow Tommy just edged out his market rival. This win made it 3-3 over fences, defying a 3lb rise in the weights for January’s course win over shorter and could progress nicely through the handicap ranks. Godot was the one that pushed the favourite all the way to the line in the hands of Stsn Sheppard, and these were the only 2 to finish.
It looked as though it was going to be three favourites from three as Artistic Endeavour had a decent lead in the 0-120 Weatherbys Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide Handicap Hurdle. However, the veteran I’m A Starman advertised a terrific attitude to close down the leader, after looking out of contention three from home. He stayed on stoutly to record a second course and distance winner in a row and got the better of the favourite by four lengths.
Our feature race of the afternoon was the 0-125 Howden Handicap Hurdle which looked the most competitive race on paper too. Mr Mackay bumped into a strong performer at Hereford last time out and unfortunately hit the frame again for Nigel and Sam TwistonDavies. He looked much better than his mark suggests, and he can win a race soon. The top-weighted Mr Freedom took gold though for Sheena West. Marc Goldstein game the five-year-old a lovely, patient ride and led all the way on the run in.
Our penultimate race went to Born At Midnight who had the in-form Harry Kimber doing the steering for Bill Turner. Still 5lb higher than his last winning mark, he bounced right back than a poor effort on a deeper surface to win this with a ton in hand, forging clear by 7 lengths. River Tyne rallied late on to pick up second spot, while the well-supported Kap Chidley was well-beaten after a poor display of jumping.
We rounded off another great day of racing with another 0-100 handicap hurdle which saw the two at the top of the betting make this a nail-biting closer. The odds-on shot Birdman Bob arguably would have won around here if not unseating last time out but seemed to hit the front too soon here which left the four runner race open to Mu Seuno. Taking a keen hold under 7lb claimer Rob Hargreaves, he found an extra gear when regaining the lead late home and the pair pulled well clear of the other two.

There should be better to come from dual Flat winner SALVATORE now that he moves into handicap company off what looks a fair opening mark. Sanitiser is clear second choice on the back of his eye-catching spin at Kempton, which was his first start over hurdles for the Gary Moore yard, while Crews Pitch and Uncle Arthur both have each-way claims.
