WELCOME

Welcome to our Strong Flavours Catering Raceday.

For those of you who are unsure, Strong Flavours are our caterers and have been a for a good few years now. They’ve been excellent partners and alongside working closely with ourselves, they do hospitality at theatres, fine dining, event catering and a vast array of weddings – we’d be happy to recommend them very highly and hope Nick, Graham, Leo and all their guests have a fantastic day with us today.

Speaking of fantastic, I think that is an appropriate word to describe one of our team members in Tommy Churchyard who is departing after today and heading off for pastures new. He’s been a great credit to himself and grown into the role superbly. He’s a big loss to the team here, but we wish him every success both in his new role and future career.

And in a similar vein, I’d like to wish Craig Staddon every success in his role as Chief Executive here at Plumpton – he’ll undoubtedly be great and there is a quality team behind him and so I’m sure that things are only likely to improve! Officially I don’t leave until February 27th, but we’ve been working together for a couple of weeks now and so this will be my last official “Welcome” before handing over the reins. I’d like to say a huge thank you to all the staff, both Plumpton’s full-time staff and casual staff, our partners and the Board for all the support I’ve had throughout my tenure which has hopefully resulted in Plumpton being a good place to go for the last 5 years.

Swiftly moving onto today and what looks a pretty good card. Luckily we have been able to have the option of watering in the lead up to this fixture, but it is not something that we really want to be doing in any way at the beginning of February! There is plenty of moisture underneath and so it is just the top section of the surface drying out, so you have to be quite delicate in not over watering and be being quite strategic about it but Marcus and the team have, as ever, done a great job on this front maintaining predominantly Good ground, with some Good to Soft in places. Our feature is the £23k Novice Handicap Chase and it has a rating of 0-125. Of the 6 runners, 4 of the 6 are rated above 120 (in fact 3 are rated exactly 125!) and so for the grade, it is as good a race as you could hope for really. The question we all have to ponder is, which of them is ahead of their mark today?

It was also some high class stuff at Newbury on Saturday and whilst undoubtedly some trainers want to use it as a stepping stone to Cheltenham, it was a quality day of action on its own with over £376k in prize money. We were also nicely represented in the biggest race (Betfair Hurdle) as of the 17 runners, 4 had strong connections with Plumpton with Glory And Fortune, Highway One O Two and Aucunrisque having all won good races here, whilst Master Chewy was a game second to the exciting Hansard this season. So it was with absolute delight we saw Aucunrisque battle it out and take the victory for Chris Gordon and Nick Scholfield, but also for Julian Head who is such a great supporter of ours – I’d say I hope they enjoyed it but with those connections, we absolutely know they did! It just goes to show that you do see some real quality on our hallowed turf, we just don’t always know how good until the future comes!

And so to the future! Thank you for supporting me during my tenure and please support Craig during his – its been a pleasure and I hope you all have a fantastic day’s racing.

Best Wishes,

Horse Care at Plumpton

At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.

Use of Screens

It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.

Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. All equine care at Plumpton is provided by:

Sussex Equine Hospital Billingshurst Rd, Ashington, West Sussex RH20 3BB

Unauthorised Bookmaking

It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Any individual contravening these rules will be evicted.

Official BHA Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a suffi cient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confi rmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefi xed by the letter h.

BETTING INFORMATION

A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling.

1. Pick your winner!

Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. Where to place your bet

– In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.

With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse.

– At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.

3. Place your bet

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet:

Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off

– Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings

Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’. If you have any queries about your bet, please speak to the bookmaker or the Betting Ring Manager.

PLACE TERMS

All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than:

(a) for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win;

(b) for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2;

(c) for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2;

(d) for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3;

(e) for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3;

(f) for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and

(g) for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.

WHAT IS RULE 4?

Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price.

If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner.

The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

LAST MEETING REVIEW

Hermino AA gave the Moore’s their first of three wins in the opener. Jamie Moore kept the favourite prominent and he took him to the front two out. He kicked clear from Goodwin Racing after they bypassed the hurdles in the straight and wasn’t for catching. Goodwin Racing kept on to take second but he was only ever playing for a place. Shaw’s Cross made it two from two for the punters in our second. Paul Henderson’s eleven-year-old had been knocking on the door this season and finally put it altogether under Nick Scholfield to win by a length.

Poncho looked to be idling a little when he hit the front but was always doing enough to win the race. It was only his second start over hurdles so will be entitled to come on for the run, he’s a promising looking five-year-old who will no doubt be aimed at better races in time for the Moore’s. Suzy Smith’s Tapley ran a valiant race from the front and the two pulled a long way clear of the remainder. The feature race of the day bought up the hattrick as Jerrash stayed on best of all up the run in to claim the prize. It was his first start since March but he seemed to show no rustiness and there may even be more to come from him this season. He still remains unexposed and looks every bit a stayer in the making.

Our penultimate race went to Tom Cannon and Toby Lawes. Sublime Heights and Art Of Illusion fought out a brilliant finish in the straight, with the long time leader looking like he was just doing enough under claimer Dylan Kitts however Tom Cannon was not going to be beat and all his hard work was rewarded with a win in the shadows of the post. Two miles and nine hurdles awaited the thirteen runners in the finale and the race went the way of Inferno Sacree for trainer Nigel Hawke. The five-year-old was free going under Tom but it seemed to do him no harm as he bolted up by 20 lengths under an enterprising ride.

Gary Moore stole the show with a treble, all ridden by son Jamie Moore

TODAY’S TOP TIPS

Nine of Jay Tidball’s 11 winners in the saddle have come for Alastair Ralph and the Shropshire handler provides the young conditional with another couple of excellent opportunities on Tap Tap Boom (3.00) and the rapidly improving Well Vicky (4.00).

Shot Boii is sure to prove popular after finishing fourth when on a four-timer at Ffos Las last month and the David Pipe inmate isn’t taken lightly. CROSSING THE BAR, however, appeared to be travelling well when brought down at Doncaster recently and if none the worse for that mishap, he could gain a first success of the season. Handicap debutant Dame Prestige makes most appeal of the remainder.

WIN: CROSSING THE BAR; DANGER: Shot Boii

HERITIER produced a solid performance on his return to chasing when third at Hereford and holds leading claims under useful conditional Toby Wynne, whose 5lb allowance could make all the difference. Dom Of Mary should have learned plenty from his first completed start over fences at Ludlow and is feared most, although C&D winners Fairway Freddy and En Coeur are others to note now that they drop in trip.

WIN: HERITIER; DANGER: Dom Of Mary

KLITSCHKO offered plenty of encouragement when second in a good race at Newbury on New Year’s Eve and in what looks a less competitive contest, Alan King’s five-year-old will take all the beating. Mardoof has posted creditable efforts in defeat at Wincanton and Uttoxeter and looks the main danger. Diamond Egg and Jack The Savage are the most interesting of the hurdling debutants and they can fight it out for the minor honours.

WIN: KLITSCHKO; DANGER: Mardoof

It wasn’t to be for Tap Tap Boom, who unseated his rider at Leicester in December when going in search of a hat-trick. A return to form isn’t out of the question granted a clean round of jumping, but it’s difficult to oppose the progressive GLOIRE D’ATHON, who beat a couple of subsequent winners at Sandown on his latest outing, and a 3lb rise for that victory could prove lenient. Sheldon might not be far away either.

WIN: GLOIRE D’ATHON; DANGER: Tap Tap Boom

Thirtyfourstitches was pulled up at Fakenham on New Year’s Day having repelled the challenge of Le Patron over C&D a couple of weeks earlier, and he might struggle to confirm that form on the revised terms. That said, a chance is taken on PRINCE IMPERIAL. The gelded son of Frankel achieved a peak rating of 96 when trained on the Flat, and his two runs over timber have offered encouragement of a future in this sphere. Kotmask is another to consider.

WIN: PRINCE IMPERIAL; DANGER: Le Patron

WELL VICKY shrugged off a quick turnaround when supplementing her Hereford success with a Bangor win on Friday and although she must saddle a double penalty, Alastair Ralph’s mare could still be ahead of the handicapper. Paddy’s Fancy looks fairly treated from an opening mark of 100, with Toby Wynne’s 5lb claim further aiding her chances. Citizen Jane hasn’t kicked on from a promising debut effort, but she must be of interest on her handicap bow.

WIN: WELL VICKY; DANGER: Paddy’s Fancy

PLAY SMARTER

With Chris Gordon’s string in terrific form, DIAMOND EGG is an appealing alternative to likely favourite Klitschko. The bumper he landed at Huntingdon wasn’t much of a race but he’s bred to make up into a better jumper and the drying ground is a plus. Klitschko was also successful in a bumper last May and is very much the one to beat judged on his effort at Newbury on New Year’s Eve. Mardoof has shown enough to suggest that he’ll pick up a race before long and he is best of the rest.
