This is one of our feature racedays of the season and the feature race itself has been running since 2001. With over £100k in prize money available and the feature itself worth over £30k, it is certainly one that goes into trainers diaries early in the season and is developing a real roll call of winners. Indeed the winners circle has included winners from the Pipe, Nicholls, Twiston-Davies and Gordon yard (who had last years winner in Go Whatever) but there have been only two multiple winning trainers going into the 23rd running of the 3m 4 furlong contest. Gary Moore won this race in 2013 with Well Refreshed and in 2014 with Reblis but the winning most trainer is Colin Tizzard who has saddled three winners in 2003 (Jeremy Spider), 2008 (Ironside) and in 2020 (Christmas in April). As Gary has no runner this year and Colin has passed the mantle onto his son Joe, we know they won’t be adding to their tally’s but at 5/1 the field it looks another great race.
One of our new initiatives this season is our Retired Racehorse Stable where you can meet our retired stars of the sport, give them a polo and a pat as well as learn about their new careers from their new owners. Today’s guest is none other than Pass Me By who has kindly been brought by Jodie Kovacs – he is now happily retired after running in 50 races under rules and then a second career as a riding horse and competed in some ROR showing classes. Why he is such an esteemed guest today in particular though is that he won the 2007 renewal of the Sussex National (when he was trained by Suzy Smith) by a gallant 1 ½ lengths. In fact Pass Me By ran in the Sussex National 3 times and so knows this day well! Do go and say hello to him and Jodie who are located in the Retired Racehorse Stable near to the Parade Ring.
Today’s card is a cracker with 63 runners and a highly competitive renewal of the 3pm feature, which for the first time is sponsored by Julian Head and the Goodwin Racing Team. We’ve become firm friends with Julian and Goodwin Racing in the last few years and he is one of Plumpton’s biggest supporters and so we thank him and his team for their support and hope today is a belter for them – with it being 5/1 the field (at the time of writing!) it looks a great race to get stuck into.
We also cannot think of Sussex National Day without a mention of Zoe Davison (and we run the last race in her honour) who was such a fantastic supporter of the track. She was loved by so many and people still talk about her with such an affection almost exactly 2 years after she left us. Sussex National Day is a perfect day to remember Zoe, with Frank N Fair running a beautiful race to finish 3rd in the Sussex National in 2018 and poignantly she recorded a famous double on the day she passed on 3rd January 2021. The two winners that day were Mr Jack and Brown Bullet who both run again today, indeed if Brown Bullet can win Zoe’s race in the last I’m pretty sure the roof would come off this place! To all her friends and family with us today, I think I can comfortably still say she is still very much missed.
We hope you all had a lovely festive period and its great to have you with us today starting off 2023 in the right vein here at Plumpton. Here’s to a cracking day and a brilliant 2023 for you all.
Best Wishes, Dan Dan Thompson Chief ExecutiveWelcome to our first raceday of 2023 –the Bet Goodwin Sussex National.

At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.
During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.
The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.
It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.
Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. All equine care at Plumpton is provided by: Sussex Equine Hospital Billingshurst Rd, Ashington, West Sussex RH20 3BB
It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Any individual contravening these rules will be evicted. On-Course Bookmakers at Plumpton – Late

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a suffi cient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confi rmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefi xed by the letter h.

Br Breeding O Owner B Breeder J Jockey T Trainer S SponsorA bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling.
Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
– In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.
– With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse.
– At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.
Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet:
– Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off
– Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings
– Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’.
If you have any queries about your bet, please speak to the bookmaker or the Betting Ring Manager.
All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than:
(a) for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win; (b) for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2; (c) for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2; (d) for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3; (e) for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3; (f) for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and (g) for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.
Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price.
If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner.
The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

well in the run-in to secure a comfortable success.
It was another fine performance in the following race, with Old Painless winning by a stunning 14 lengths for jockey Jack Quinlan and trainer Harry Whittington. That was his first win on the track and has since gone on to finish second in a step up in class.
The feature race of the day, The In Memory Of Susan Corrigan Mares’ Handicap Hurdle was won by Will Victory (pictured) for trainer Harry Fry and jockey Lorcan Murtagh. The six-year-old kept on well to fend off the danger from Midnight Mary to win by two lengths. That made it back-to-back victories for Will Victory having won earlier in the month at Sedgefield.
The fourth race, The Theo’s Charm Memorial Novices’ Hurdle, was won by the Tom Lacey-trained Howlingmadmurdock by four lengths ahead of Prince Imperial. The five-year-old kept on well and won going away. That win made it two wins from two and first over hurdles.
Le Patron was unable to justify the market support in the following race, finishing second, two-and-a-half lengths behind Thirtyfourstitches. The Dr Richard Newland-trained gelding wasn’t particularly fluent in his jumping but kept on well in the run-in to secure a comfortable win over the favourite.
Another market favourite unable to justify their support was Ozzie Man in the penultimate race of the day. The Gary Moore-trained six-year-old was held up towards the rear before being pushed along before five out but made no impression approaching the last. It was Uallrightharry who stole the show, winning by seven-and-a-half lengths.
Another day of fine racing was then completed with the Paul Nicholls-trained short-priced favourite winning The Buy The Plumpton History Book Now! Open National Hunt Flat Race by two-and-a-quarter lengths.
Victory landed the feature Mares’ Handicap Hurdle for trainer Harry Fry, who won the race for the second successive season Boy got the meeting off to a fine start, winning by four-and-three- of a length in the Derek Hunnisett Memorial Maiden Hurdle ahead of Our Champ for trainer Nick Gifford and jockey James Davies. The five-year-old kept onChris Gordon boasts a respectable 21% strike-rate (£10.86 level-stakes profit) with his chasers at this venue. He saddles leading hope Blame The Game in the feature contest at 3.00 this afternoon.
STAGE STAR was impressive on his chase debut at Warwick in November, putting behind him a couple of lacklustre efforts in Grade 1 novice hurdles in the spring. Paul Nicholls’ charge was beaten at cramped odds last time out at Newbury in Grade 2 company but has been given time to get over those exertions. Mortlach went well for a long way in the Kauto Star at Kempton on Boxing Day and is good enough to make a race of it.
WIN: STAGE STAR; DANGER: Mortlach
MASTER CHEWY may have bumped into a useful prospect when finishing second at Cheltenham last time and a reproduction of that level of form could be good enough to win this contest. That said, Hansard is an obvious threat following his Huntingdon victory but he does have to carry a penalty as a result. Others who make the shortlist are Prince Imperial and Dame Prestige.
WIN: MASTER CHEWY; DANGER: Hansard
TWINJETS bounced back to form when getting off the mark over hurdles at Leicester a month ago and the six-year-old is clearly the one to beat this afternoon. Haston Clermont showed plenty of promise in a Chepstow bumper and it would be no surprise to see him go well on his hurdling bow. Hilltown should not be underestimated, while Twin Power could also go well.
WIN: TWINJETS; DANGER: Haston Clermont
DOIREANN remains a maiden, but she was only narrowly denied on her seasonal return at Fakenham in November and a 2lb rise may not be enough to stop her from getting off the mark here. Getaway Tom has shown promise in novice hurdles and has to be of some interest on his handicap bow, while similar comments apply to Wind Of Fortune. Pawpaw was third on his latest outing over obstacles and he completes the shortlist.
WIN: DOIREANN; DANGER: Getaway Tom
TIP TOP MOUNTAIN won this by a short-head last year and although he is 10lb higher this time around, he arrives after a win at Fontwell on his return to action and remains open to improvement. En Coeur is an obvious threat having raced nine times here over fences with a top three finish in all of them, while Sublime Heights is interesting wearing blinkers after racing lazily at Southwell.
WIN: TIP TOP MOUNTAIN; DANGER: En Coeur
Recent rain will make sure this is a true test of stamina and with BLAME THE GAME running on well over three and a quarter miles at Doncaster in late November, this could suit the eightyear-old, who also has winning form here. Pemberley was second in this contest last year off 1lb higher and has to make the shortlist, with his Lingfield second a promising return. Atakan and Grace A Vous Enki are others to consider.
WIN: BLAME THE GAME; DANGER: Pemberley
Mr Freedom won here in September and he could bounce back after struggling in Grade 2 company last time. He can go well, along with the consistent El Muchacho, who makes his handicap debut off a mark of 104 with improvement likely. However, they may both struggle to cope with PILSDON PEN, a winner at Exeter in November on his return and an added 4lb may not stop him following up.

TWINJETS wasn’t too straight when winning at Leicester but he remains a good hurdles prospect and could do a lot better as he gets to grips with his job. The longer trip here will suit him and he can come out on top again. Park This One is the clear danger if running here rather than at Catterick on Sunday. Twin Power quickly has a bit to prove but the tongue tie could help him. Haston Clermont is interesting on his hurdles debut.

SUBLIME HEIGHTS: Following its run on 22/11/2022 it was reported that the trainer could not explain the poor run. ROSTELLO: Following its run on 28/9/2022 it was reported that the horse was hampered by fallers early-on. EXTRAORDINARY MAN: Following its run on 21/11/2022 it was reported that the horse tired in this its comeback race. Probable S.P’s: 9-4 Tip Top Mountain (IRE), 11-2 Sublime Heights (IRE), 6-1 Le Coeur Net (FR), 7-1 En Coeur (FR), 10-1 Rostello (FR), 12-1 Rebel Intentions (IRE), 14-1 Dindin (FR), 18-1 Extraordinary Man (FR), 66-1 Clondaw Robin (IRE)
TIP TOP MOUNTAIN has a much more solid profile than the majority of these and looks sure make a bold bid to land this race for the second year running. En Coeur often saves his best efforts for this place so he’s feared most ahead of Dindin, who has dipped back to a workable mark.

Mrs Shirley Grist recently passed away having only a few months ago achieved her one hundredth and first birthday. She was a long standing owner of National Hunt horses, a staunch supporter of jump racing, who loved her horses with their welfare always uppermost in her mind. Her patience was rewarded with many successes achieved, a lot of them at Plumpton.
Two of her most notable horses being Little Bud, six career wins, five of them at Plumpton. This mare that she bred herself was talented but opinionated and gave her owner many anxious but also thrilling moments.
Also The Hardy Boy, seven career wins, six of them at Plumpton. In one season he won three races on the bounce, and his owner won three rose bowls, and said that she felt guilty about receiving them, upon which the advice given was enjoy it while it lasts, which she certainly did!
After racing win lose or draw it was back to her car, to tea and Rich Tea biscuits, a moment for congratulation or commiseration, a treasured moment at the end of the day.
Shirley will be sadly missed.
The Hardy Boy and Little Bud are in happy retirement.

PILSDON PEN resumed his progress over timber when making a winning return at Exeter in November and still looks on a workable mark. He can go in again. Begin The Luck and El Muchacho are feared most.
