We’re taking the opportunity to highlight the vital role being part of a supportive, positive community plays in building mental and physical wellbeing. Remember Racing Welfare is #AlwaysThere whenever you need them. Visit www.racingwelfare.co.uk

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

It is with great sadness that the Directors of Newton Abbot Racecourse Ltd. report the recent unexpected death of fellow Director and Chairman Hugh Michelmore, after a brief illness.
Hugh’s professional background was as a Solicitor, qualifying in 1977 and becoming a senior partner at Gill Akaster (GA) Solicitors in 2002. While Hugh retired from legal practise in 2016 he remained fully engaged in his many business interests, in particular Newton Abbot Racecourse, where he had served as non executive Director since 1985.
During fifty years of service to Newton Abbot Racecourse Hugh showed exemplary leadership and business acumen, always underpinned by a genuine love of jump racing and loyalty to the racecourse in particular.
Hugh attended nearly every race meeting held at Newton Abbot, and was usually to be found chatting to shareholders, race goers and box holders during the day, always charming and alert for ways to improve their Raceday experience.
Hugh will be greatly missed by the Shareholders, Directors and Staff at Newton Abbot Racecourse and his wife Janine and family are in our thoughts.

MORFEE was only just denied by a subsequent winner after travelling better from some way out at Market Rasen last month so has obvious claims off the same mark. Dancingontheedge shaped well on her comeback run at Chepstow and has potential back in this sphere after a promising debut here in September, so rates the main threat.

HORSE WELFARE AT NEWTON ABBOT
At all race meetings held at Newton Abbot Racecourse there are three specially qualified Veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. One vet will attend the start and follow the race in his/her vehicle and attend fallen, lame or pulled up horses Another vet will observe the finishing straight from the small stand beside the last fence in the final straight. They will immediately attend fallen or lame horses at this last fence or flight of hurdles.
If directed, they may be required to attend other incidents in the final straight. The third vet will be available to complete the treatment of urgent cases within the stable yard. This third vet will, if not otherwise occupied, observe the race from the bank at the outside of the track by the ‘in-line’ steward’s box and be available to attend horses finishing the race
In the event of two vets being occupied treating an emergency case, the SVS will follow horses. Whenever possible, one of the Veterinary Surgeons should be present in the Unsaddling Enclosure after each race
USE OF SCREENS
It is now standard practise for screens to be erected around any horses when receiving veterinary attention. This does not reflect the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse a calm environment in which to make a recovery.
Please do not therefore assume the worst if you see the screen erected around a fallen horse.
