Doncaster 1 Mile 6 Furlongs Saturday 13th September
SPONSORS WELCOME
On behalf of everyone at Betfred a very warm welcome to Newmarket for The Betfred Guineas Festival.
When opening my first shop in Salford, Greater Manchester back in September 1967, not in my wildest dreams did I think that one day I would be headline sponsor of one of The Guineas, never mind both!
Yet all these years later I am so proud to be able to say that the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas completes the full set and Betfred are the very proud sponsor of all five British Classics The fact that this has never been done before makes it all the more special.
Looking back to my first ever Guineas as a bookmaker (which certainly does not feel like over fifty years ago!), I remember well that Sir Ivor obliged at 11/8 and was certainly one for the punters and I soon had a queue out of the door at the ‘pay-out’ window!
On that day Sir Ivor was ridden by the punters friend Lester Piggott and trainedbythegreatVincentO’Brienand a few weeks later they duly followed up in the Derby and another big queue!
Unfortunately, Sir Ivor never ran in the St Leger so no triple crown was won but just a couple of years later Piggott and O’Brien combined on the incomparable Nijinsky to land that famous classic treble – and yet more queues!!
With only one betting shop back in 1970 the ‘history’ value certainly did not make the payout any easier to take but I can honestly say that I would love to see the triple crown won again this year Fifty-five years has been far too long to wait for a repeat and so to add a little additional ‘encouragement’ I am putting up a bonus of £2,000,000 if any horse can win this years Betfred Triple Crown.
Finally, a big thank you to everyone who helps make these days so special, the management and staff of Newmarket Racecourse who have made Betfred feel so welcome, Jockey Club Racecourses, ITV Racing and Racing TV and never forgetting you, the racegoer (without fans there is no sport).
A British Classic is a very special occasion and we need them to thrive, I may be a bookmaker, but I am also a racing fan, and I intend to enjoy the very special atmosphere these races produce, be it here at Newmarket, Epsom Downs or Doncaster.
But for now we concentrate on three excellent days of racing here at HQ, hopefully we’ll see you again very soon at The Betfred Derby.
Enjoy the racing and be lucky.
Fred
Welcome back to the Rowley Mile for the third and final day of the Betfred Guineas Festival. It’s been a fantastic weekend of racing and entertainment so far and we’re set to finish in style with another top-class card and plenty to enjoy off the track.
We continue to thank Betfred for their support as sponsors of all five Betfred British Classics, the second of which is today, the Betfred 1000 Guineas.
There are two races this afternoon supported by Tattersalls as part of their High Value Developmental Race Series which has been running since last year. The races offer enhanced prize money to horses embarking on the early stages of their careers, aiming to support the domestic breeding industry and encourage the purchase and racing of young talent in Britain
We would also like to thank Nyetimber for their generous support of today’s card
This afternoon’s seven-race fixture is headlined by the Group One Betfred 1000 Guineas, the second Classic of the season and a showcase for the best three-year-old fillies over a mile It’s a race rich in history with past winners including Minding, Love and Hermosa
Off the track, there’s something for everyone with live music from the Snapchaps and Roaming Boys, family entertainment in the Garden Enclosure, a wide range of food and drink and Live Darts with Keith Deller and Colin Lloyd. Make sure to stick around for Radio 1 favourites Rickie and Melvin who will be performing on stage on the Hyperion Lawn for approximately 75 mins following the last race.
With loads of activities on course today, do make sure you make your way to the Aston Martin plinth and the new Betfred Sports Zone.
We would also like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their ongoing contribution to prize money and Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai for their valued sponsorship of our Owners and Trainers facility
We hope you enjoy a brilliant finale to the Festival and wish all horses and their connections the very best of luck.

RACE ONE
FALAKEYAH justified favouritism on debut in impressive style at Wolverhampton in November, shaping as if she would relish this extra distance Owen Burrows’ filly is likely to have lots more to offer and it would be no surprise to see her take this step up in her stride Anna Swan failed to maintain her unbeaten record when well beaten in the Fillies’ Mile here, but this should be a bit easier and she has to be considered. Janey Mackers completes the shortlist.
RACE TWO
Cinderella’s Dream was surprisingly beaten by Choisya in the Group 2 Balanchine at Meydan, but that form was franked in no uncertain terms when her conqueror went on to score at the top level at Keeneland. Even so, RUNNING LION still looks the way to go The Gosdens’ five-year-oldsignedoffher2024campaignwithabrilliantefforttofilltherunner-upspotinthePrixdel’Operaandsheboastscourseform as she took the Pretty Polly here in 2023 Last year’s 1000 Guineas heroine Elmalka is the pick of the remaining trio.
RACE THREE
Kihavah took the Queen’s Cup on his return to the Flat and is likely to have his supporters under a 4lb penalty Liam Swagger is also considered after his third at Chelmsford but the vote goes to ALIGN THE STARS, who ran too badly to be true when finishing stone last behind Kihavah at Musselburgh Charlie Johnston’s four-year-old was victorious in hot handicaps last season and may still have room for manoeuvre off his current mark Artistic Star is another to keep an eye on
RACE FOUR
DESERT FLOWER will likely start a warm order and deservedly so The daughter of Night Of Thunder displayed top-class form last year, culminating with a convincing victory in the Fillies’ Mile over C&D, and an impressive racecourse gallop at the track recently further boosts confidence. Lake Victoria is another filly out of the top drawer, having recordedahat-trickofwinsatthehighestlevelasatwo-year-old,includingtheCheveleyParkhere.TheBallydoyleinmatebeatRedLetterattheCurraghbeforethat,although thelatterwouldhavefinishedcloserthanfourthwithaclearrun.DutyFirstlandedtheFredDarlingatNewburyinfinestyleandcanconfirmsuperiorityoverrunner-upHeyBoo
RACE FIVE
TWILIGHT STAR looks the safest proposition rather than guess at the ability of the newcomers The Godolphin filly finished a respectable third here on last month’s debut, having shown plenty of early pace, and a bold bid is anticipated with that initial experience under her belt Little Havana is a speedily-bred daughter of Havana Grey and any strong support for George Boughey’s charge could prove significant Moira Express is preferred to Spicy Marg of the remaining pair
RACE SIX
Having offered plenty of encouragement on his debut second over C&D last month, MOONFALL sets a good standard for the others to aim at George Boughey’s colt is entitled to build on that performance and a breakthrough victory could be imminent. Rising Power, a 600,000-euro half-brother to smart sprinter Roulston Scar, warrants consideration and market support for the son of Wootton Bassett would be interesting. French Affair is the pick of the other newcomers.
RACE SEVEN
Merchant improved with each run as a juvenile, which saw him end his campaign with a triumph at Wolverhampton An opening mark of 82 looks workable on his return to action and he is a potential improver stepping up in trip, but HALLELUJAH U is slightly more appealing. The Pinatubo colt is entitled to strip sharper for his third-placed reappearance over C&D last month and that fitness could prove crucial. Lightening Mann is also noted.
is below 5’6 (although there are exceptions) and weigh between 8 & 9st
2. JOCKEYS BOOTS
They are mostly synthetic and can weigh as little as 300 grams
3. RACING SADDLE

4. JOCKEYS WHIP
A jockey’s whip is made from a core of light-weight carbon fibre surrounded by layers of air cushioned foam and light-weight leather. Usage of the whip is strictly controlled by the British Horseracing Authority Stewards who are present on raceday
5. SILKS
The silks that a jockey wears belong to the racehorse owner rather than the jockey. Each set is unique, such is the demand for certain designs that some colours can sell for thousands, or even tens of thousands of pounds
6. BREATHING
The horse’s lungs breath in and out 140 times per minute delivering 150 litres of air per second. At 10,000 litres per race, that is what a human breaths in a day
7. HEART CAPACITY
Up to 240 beats per minute moving 60 pints of blood during a race. A racehorse’s heart weighs the equivalent of 4 bags of sugar (around 4 kgs)
8. STRIDE LENGTH
An average racehorses’ stride length is 20-21ft
9. STRIDE FREQUENCY
Between 130 and 140 strides per minute
10. AVERAGE SPEED
37.5 mph
11. HORSES WEIGHT

THE BETFRED PRETTY POLLY STAKES
The William Hill Pretty Polly Stakes takes place over 10 furlongs and commemorates the outstanding Pretty Polly, a winner of 22 of her 44 starts including the Fillies’ Triple Crown in 1904.
A Listed contest for three-year-old fillies, the William Hill Pretty Polly Stakes primarily serves as a trial for the Oaks at Epsom Downs. Since the Newmarket contest was established in 1961, four fillies have completed the double.
The first of these was Queen Elizabeth II’s Dunfermline in 1977 The great filly, who was trained by Dick Hern and ridden by Willie Carson, went on to prove herself among the very best of her generation with a second Classic success in the St Leger at Doncaster later in the season.
Next up was the outstanding Ouija Board, the 2004 heroine. Lord Derby’s homebred daughter of Cape Cross, trained in Newmarket by Ed Dunlop, would go on to win seven Group One contests over the course of her career, with her Oaks success followed by top-level victories across the globe including in the USA and Hong Kong If that was not enough, at stud Ouija Board went on to produce the 2014 Derby winner Australia.
The two most recent fillies to complete the Pretty Polly-Oaks double came in back-to-back years – Talent (2013) and Taghrooda (2014)
THE BETFRED PRETTY POLLY STAKES
RACE DESCRIPTION: This one mile, two furlong contest for three-year-old fillies is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st for each runner before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed or Group 3 success. Horses that have already won at Group 1 or 2 level are not permitted to enter.
The 2024 Pretty Polly Stakes showcased a stand-out performance by Friendly Soul, a three-year-old filly trained by John and Thady Gosden In only her second career start, she led from early on and secured a decisive victory over the 1m2f distance, finishing 1¼ lengths ahead of the odds-on favourite, Kalpana. The pair finished well ahead of the rest, with third-placed Kitteridge trailing by 12 lengths.
£1 stake. 6 ball draw. All bets placed on Betfred Lotto products are fixed odds bets on the outcome of an official draw, not a lottery bet. Betfred rules apply.

PLAY SMARTER
Acracking Pretty Polly full of improvers but such was the impression created by FALAKEYAH when going in on her debut at Wolverhampton in November that she’s impossible to oppose. Likealo also looked a fine prospect when making a winning start at Chelmsford City and could emerge as the main threat to Owen Burrows’ New Bay filly, although Sand Gazelle, Anna Swan and Janey Mackers all command plenty of respect too.

THE BETFRED DAHLIA STAKES
A relatively new addition to the Pattern race programme, the Betfred Dahlia Stakes was established in 1997 as a Listed contest. It was upgraded to Group Three status in 2004 and was further boosted to Group Two level in 2015.
ThecontestcommemoratesthegreatracemareDahlia,whowasatruepioneerofinternational racing in the 1970s.
Trained in France for the majority of her career by Maurice Zilber for American owner Nelson Bunker Hunt, Dahlia was the first female racehorse in history to earn over $1 million in prize money. Her victories spanned the globe, with her most high-profile wins in Britain coming in Ascot’s King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 1973 and 1974
Run over a mile and a furlong for females aged four and above, the Dahlia Stakes has been won by some outstanding performers in its short history and true to Dahlia’s legacy, several winners have gone on to prove themselves on the international stage
Izzi Top (2012) went to register Group One victories in Ireland and France while Dank (2013) subsequently proved herself against the best in North America with victories in the Beverly D Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
French raider Esoterique (2014) also went on to prove herself at the highest level, with two subsequent Group One wins in France before she returned to Newmarket to win the Group One Sun Chariot Stakes in 2015
Lady Bowthorpe (2021) subsequently landed the Group One Nassau Stakes at Glorious Goodwood while a year later Dreamloper (2022) showed she was among the very best milers of her generation with Group One wins in France in the Prix d’Ispahan and Prix du Moulin
THE BETFRED DAHLIA STAKES
RACE DESCRIPTION: Run over a mile and one furlong, this contest for fillies who are four-year-olds and older is a Group 2 contest and will attract some of the best around this season. Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s official rating reflects the weight that they must carry, in a Group 2 all runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form. In this case, 9st is the mark, although any runner which has already won a Group 2 race will be issued with a 3lb penalty and any winner of a Group 1 contest is given a 5lb penalty to shoulder

THE CLASSICS
The Classics in British horse racing are the crown jewels of the sport, embodying centuries of tradition and prestige. These five races—The 1000 Guineas, 2000 Guineas, The Oaks, The Derby, and The St Leger—have shaped the history of the sport since their inception. Together, they represent the pinnacle of achievement for any thoroughbred, and their impact is felt far beyond the borders of the UK. The journey of the British Classics began in the 17th century, with the first St Leger Stakes run in 1776 at Doncaster
Over the years, these races have attracted the best horses, trainers, and jockeys, and their importance in the racing calendar has only grown. These iconic contests have been the setting for some of the sport’s most thrilling moments, including the rare achievement of the Triple Crown, a feat last accomplished by the legendary Nijinsky in 1970
Betfred’s historic sponsorship of all five of the British Classics, beginning in 2025, marks a new chapter in the rich legacy of these races As the first sponsor ever to hold the title of supporting all five Classics, Betfred is making a bold statement in its commitment to the sport. The bookmaker, led by founder Fred Done, has further elevated the importance of these races by offering the first ever bonus to any horse that wins the coveted “Betfred Triple Crown,” which consists of the 2000 Guineas, The Derby, and The St Leger. This extraordinary £2 million bonus, reflects Betfred’s passion for the sport and its ambition to cement the British Classics at the forefront of the sport.
With a focus on promoting the individual races, as well as their collective significance, The Jockey Club and Arena Racing Company have established a new identity for the British Classics. This refreshed brand will serve as a beacon of the races’ heritage, while also drawing attention to their ongoing relevance in today’s racing world The Betfred British Classics logo will be prominently displayed at Newmarket during the Betfred Guineas Festival, and this new identity will be used to educate and inspire racing fans about the historic and cultural significance of the Classics

THE BETFRED 1000 GUINEAS - FACTS AND FIGURES
BACKGROUND
The Betfred 1000 Guineas is the fillies’ equivalent of the Betfred 2000 Guineas, both of which are run over the historic Rowley Mile at Newmarket. As with the 2000 Guineas, the Classic is so named because the original prize fund was 1,000 Guineas
The youngest of the British Classics, the 1000 Guineas was first staged in 1814 and won by Charlotte, ridden by Bill Clift and owned by Christopher Wilson, the same combination responsible for Wizard, the initial victor of the 2000 Guineas
Like the Betfred 2000 Guineas, the Betfred 1000 Guineas has a total prize fund of £525,000 in 2025
1000 GUINEAS-2000 GUINEAS DOUBLE
Four fillies have completed the 1000 Guineas-2000 Guineas double. The last was Sceptre in 1902, who was also successful in the Oaks and St Leger The other fillies to win both Newmarket Classics are Crucifix (1840), Formosa (1868) and Pilgrimage (1878)
FIELD SIZE
In 1825, the Duke of Grafton’s Tontine was the sole participant in the 1000 Guineas At the other end of the spectrum, the largest field was 29 in 1926, when Pillion was successful at 25-1 The maximum field size allowed now is 25
WINNING DISTANCE
Homecoming Queen recorded the greatest winning margin since 1900 when scoring by nine lengths in 2012 under Ryan Moore. During the same period, six winners have scraped home by a short-head, namely Atmah (1911), Fair Isle (1930), Highclere (1974), Nocturnal Spree (1975), Oh So Sharp (1985) and Las Meninas (1994). Jacqueline Quest was a nose in front of Special Duty in the 2010 renewal only for the places to be reversed in the stewards’ room
BETTING
The longest-priced 1000 Guineas winner is Billesdon Brook, returned at 66-1 in 2018. The shortestpriced was Crucifix, whose odds were 1-10 when taking the 1840 renewal.
A total of 81 of the 211 runnings have been won by either the favourite or a joint-favourite – a strike rate of 38 per cent Sent off at 11-10, Minding in 2016 was the most recent winning favourite
1000 GUINEAS-OAKS DOUBLE AND THE FILLIES’ TRIPLE CROWN
A total of 49 fillies have won both the 1000 Guineas and Oaks at Epsom Downs. Neva was the first in 1817 and Love the latest in 2020
One of the true heroines of the 1000 Guineas was Tagalie, successful in 1912 and the only winner to go on and land the Derby.
Sceptre, successful in the 1902 running of the 1000 Guineas, remains the only winner of four British Classics outright, having also succeeded in the 2000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger. She also finished fourth in the only other British Classic, the Derby.
Hannah captured the 1000 Guineas in 1871 and was one of the most outstanding fillies of her era. She progressed to claim the fillies’ Triple Crown - the 1000 Guineas, the Oaks and St Leger.
Another six fillies have also managed this feat –Apology (1874), La Fleche (1892), Pretty Polly (1904), Sun Chariot (1942), Meld (1955) and Oh So Sharp (1985)
OVERSEAS-TRAINED WINNERS

ROYAL WINNERS
Queen Elizabeth II owned the 1974 heroine Highclere while her father, King George VI, saw both Hypernicum (1946) and Sun Chariot (1942) carry his colours to victory King George V was victorious with Scuttle in 1928 and, way back in 1896 Thais triumphed for the Prince of Wales (later to become King Edward VII).
THE BETFRED 1000 GUINEAS
RACE DESCRIPTION: The first fillies’ Classic of the season, this one mile race for three-year-olds is also a Group 1 contest; the highest level of racing Group 1 races attract the very best horses from Britain and Ireland, occasionally from as far away as France, Australia, South Africa or the USA due to the prestige of these historic contests. Victory in a Classic race is the ultimate pinnacle for owners, trainers and jockeys and those fillies that are capable of racing competitively at this level often go on to have lucrative careers as broodmares later on.

A mouthwatering clash between unbeaten pair DESERT FLOWER and Lake Victoria. The latter won Group 1s over 3 different trips last season and isn’t opposed lightly but Godolphin’s charge couldn’t have been more impressive in the Fillies’ Mile over C&D and is narrowly preferred. Best of the rest could be Red Letter, who pushed Lake Victoria close on her debut and wasn’t too far behind her in the Moyglare either despite things not going her way.

At Newmarket Racecourses we believe racing should be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. And one thing is certainly true, the more relaxed and comfortable we feel, the more likely we are to have a great time So that’s why we’ve created one very simple piece of guidance, to come “dressed to feel your best”.
We’re all unique, and no more so than in our sense of style and comfort. For some, wearing a nice sweatshirt, pair of jeans and clean trainers is what makes them feel confident and at-ease. For others, they might prefer to turn heads with a sharp suit or glamorous dress and high heels, particularly for one of our big race meetings.
But whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather Here’s some other useful tips and advice for making sure your time with us is as memorable as possible.
Fancy dress can often add colour and fun to our racedays, but please avoid inappropriate or offensive outfits, as anything deemed vulgar or derogatory may be refused entry.
We love other sports as much as anyone, but showing allegiance to a favourite club can sometimes appear antagonistic. So, to keep things simple, please refrain from wearing team kits when attending one of our racedays.
Only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets in the course of their business Any individuals found contravening these conditions will be evicted. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc, for any purpose at the racecourse.

In an event of an emergency please be guided by our security stewards and by messages you will see and hear around the racecourse. IMPORTANT NOTICES
RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
