A fast and furious six furlongs, the race has an impressive roll of honour, including in recent years with multiple Group One scorers Starman, Alcohol Free and Shaquille all adding their names.
We are also grateful to our headline partner, Debenhams, who are supporting us across all three days of the July Festival Head down to their Debenhams Day Spa, based trackside in the Grandstand and Paddock Enclosure, where you can expect interactive beauty bars, hair and make-up touch up zones and some picture-perfect moments.
Head down to the Grandstand and Paddock Enclosure for Darts with the Stars, where racegoers can compete with some of the leading darts players, including Keith Deller and Russ Bray. We also encourage racegoers to join us after racing to enjoy a DJ set full of feel-good tunes and dance anthems from DJ, producer and TV personality Marcel Sommerville. Please look at the racecourse map further in this racecard for locations of all activities.
Looking ahead, the Newmarket Nights series will continue at the July Course, with further concerts from Tom Jones, Faithless, Ball and Boe and Sugababes and Natasha Bedingfield later in the summer, with tickets for all these events selling fast, and available through our website, www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/newmarket
We also look ahead to our next weekend of racing, with our Boots and Bridles Weekend Returning for 2025, step into a world where cowboy boots and jockey silks collide, and the sounds of the racetrack harmonize with the rhythms of country tunes. Join us on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th July to enjoy an action-packed afternoon of racing, followed by after-racing music!
Across the season, we would like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their contributions to prize money and Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai for their continued sponsorship of our Owners and Trainers facility
I hope that you all have a wonderful time here at Newmarket and wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck

The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2025
As a leading distributor of horse feed, bedding and supplements in the greater GCC area, I am once again immensely proud to support the Jockey Club at Newmarket Racecourses for the 2025 season. As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.
I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2025 season, the very best of luck.

TODAY’S TOP TIPS
RACE ONE
Some powerhouse stables are represented and this looks a very decent maiden However, with five winners since 2017, Charlie Appleby has farmed this race and could again hold the key if SNOW LIGHT lives up to the billing as the choice of William Buick over her stable companion, Dancing Flower The chief threat to the selection could be Darkwing, a daughter of Frankel, whose dam was a Group 2 winner the same yard/connections. New Vega and Fan Me also warrant betting checks
Selection; SNOW LIGHT
RACE TWO
Danger: Darkwing
MISS NIGHTFALL was the subject of one of the biggest betting plunges of Royal Ascot week when she was backed into favouritism for the Sandringham Despite only managing to finish sixth in that race, she wasn't beaten far and it was a most encouraging effort on the basis of it being just her second run in a handicap. Bountiful (11th) and Saariselka (18th) appear held on the face value of the Ascot form and with that in mind, the Kensington Palace Stakes winner, Miss Information, is forwarded as the danger to selection, although drooping in trip off 6lb higher asks more of her.
Selection; MISS NIGHTFALL
RACE THREE
Danger: Miss Information
MORE THUNDER, who is 3lb well-in here, has won two of his three starts since joining William Haggas and was unlucky not to have completed the hat-trick when he was narrowly defeated in a tight finish to the Wokingham at Royal Ascot last month The son of Night Of Thunder stayed on readily that day and this additional furlong is well worth exploring given he ran over further when trained by Sir Michael Stoute The Wokingham third, Ten Pounds, is closely matched and is a serious threat to the selection Akkadian Thunder and Myal are also strong contenders.
Selection; MORE THUNDER
RACE FOUR
Danger: Ten Pounds
FIFTH COLUMN caught the eye when seventh in the Britannia at Royal Ascot as he did well to get so close from a low draw The son of Kingman clearly remains on a workable mark and may be the safest pick in a very competitive event. Bedouin Prince has shown plenty of ability in three starts to date, but an opening rating of 100 demands plenty from him on his handicap bow. Others to note are Secret Theory and Raafedd
Selection; FIFTH COLUMN
RACE FIVE
Danger: Bedouin Prince
ITALY created a big impression when winning on debut over 7f at Leopardstown in May and that form was boosted when the second filled the same position in the Chesham at Royal Ascot With improvement highly likely, Aidan O'Brien's colt gets the nod. That said, Saba Desert has a similar profile and Charlie Appleby has won five of the last nine renewals of this contest. The shortlist is completed by Wild Desert and Moonfall.
Selection; ITALY
RACE SIX
Danger:
Symbol Of Honour won a Group 2 sprint at Haydock in May, but William Buick prefers supplemented stablemate Notable Speech, a dual Group 1 winner over a mile last year The latter has the class to get involved on his first start over 6f, but another chance goes to INISHERIN Not at his best behind Flora Of Bermuda (third) in the Group 1 Jubilee Stakes at Ascot, Kevin Ryan's sprinter had beaten the latter at York before that, and is taken to bounce back in first-time cheekpieces. Whistlejacket and Big Mojo are not out of it either
Selection; INISHERIN
RACE SEVEN
Danger: Notable Speech
Atlantic Sunset won over C&D last month, but he'll need to step up on that form raised 4lb and upped in class. CLAYMORE makes more appeal, as he can be forgiven a poor effort on soft ground at Chester, having finished runnerup on the Rowley course here before that That form reads well in this context and a strong challenge is expected from the son of New Bay. A winner at Epsom in April, Asgard's Captain returns to this lower level with a shout
Selection; CLAYMORE
Danger: Atlantic Sunset
Saba Desert
Retraining Of Racehorses Parade
Established in 2000, RoR is dedicated to safeguarding the welfare of all former racehorses.
The charity leads the way in setting industry standards for retraining and supports owners through training and education to help build lifelong partnerships with their retired racehorses.
RoR also showcases the versatility of these incredible animals by promoting their involvement in a wide range of equestrian disciplines and competitions.
Through RoR membership, the organisation maintains a robust tracking system to monitor the lives of former racehorses, and when needed, provides welfare support to those horses facing difficult circumstances.
Importantly, any horse in the UK that has been bred to race is eligible to be registered with RoR. Their work ensures that racehorses can enjoy fulfilling second careers and happy, healthy lives beyond the track.
Come down to see these three retired racehorses parade at 12.30 and join the meet and greet in the pre-parade ring after!
Jemima Stratton & Biggles
8-year-old gelding by Zoffany, formerly trained by Ralph Beckett and Eve Johnson Houghton Breeder - Lady Cobham
Biggles is an 8-year old gelding who was in training with Ralph Beckett. Jemima said of him “He came to me in September 2024 for retraining as Izzi Beckett has suggested that he might suit me as a potential event horse. He has been such a joy to retrain and has just jumped double clear in his first BE 100 after some really good 90 runs at the beginning of the season, and he seems to improve every time out which is fantastic to see.
He is bold, brave and clever which is why I love thoroughbreds so much as event horses. He hasn’t been without his challenges though, and retraining his instincts from his initial reaction to be to do everything very quickly has probably been the toughest thing. I spent the first few months as him not really breaking out of trot and doing lots of work on being relaxed so that he was actually rideable. I think installing those basics from the beginning has made life so much easier for me now as he actually listens to me rather than going at great speed! Biggles is still owned by his breeder and owner in racing, Lady Cobham, and she has been massively supportive of what will hopefully be a long career in eventing for him.”
Abigail Sole & African Jazz
10-year-old gelding by Cape Cross, formerly trained by Charlie Appleby Breeder - Godolphin
Racing eight times and notching two wins in his racing career, African Jazz is now with Abi and shows all over the country in ROR classes.
Abi said of him “Jazz is 10 and the kindest, biddable horse I think I have ever had the pleasure to own. He tries so hard, very rarely puts a hoof wrong and loves cuddles and attention – his trait is to tap the floor for a tit bit, at feeding time, or when just standing near his stable not paying him any attention. He adores my 4-year-old son. Off the racetrack, Jazz has turned his hoof to Showing (Retrained Racehorse classes), eventing and Dressage and even been hunting. He has excelled in each of them, winning across the board.”
His recent show results have been impressive, 4th in the Open ROR Class at Royal Windsor 2025, 1st in both the Open ROR Class and the Challenge ROR Class at the Suffolk Show 2025 and 4th in the Hickstead Open Series FInal.
Katie Jerram & Barbers Shop
23-year-old gelding by Saddlers’ Hall, formerly trained by Nicky Henderson Breeder - Queen Elizabeth
The oldest of our parade (by a significant margin), Barbers Shop is also our only National Hunt horse here today.
Formerly owned by the late Queen Elizabeth II and bred by the late Queen Mother, Barbers Shop had a long and successful career over the jumps.
During that time he developed a strong partnership with legendary jump jockey, Barry Gearghty which saw them capture the Listed Future Stars Chase at Sandown together in 2008.
Since retiring from racing in 2012, Barbers Shop has joined up with Katie Jerram to pursue a new career.
TODAY’S FEATURE RACEAL BASTI EQUIWORLD, DUBAI JULY CUP
The Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup, the centrepiece of the three-day Debenhams July Festival, is one of the most valuable sprint contests in the European racing calendar, with the 2025 running worth an advertised £600,000.
Sponsored for the first time by Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai this year, the Group One event is run over six furlongs on the famous July Course Springfield, bred by Queen Victoria at the Hampton Court Stud, took the inaugural running in 1876, and followed up a year later to become the first dual winner Springfield also proved top-class over longer distances, landing the Champion Stakes over 10 furlongs in 1877
Other outstanding victors in the early years included Sundridge, successful in 1902, 1903 and 1904 - the only triple winner in the history of the race. The son of Amphion was a true rags to riches story, having graduated from selling company. He was also a great success at stud, being a highly influential sire in Europe and North America.
The great mare Diadem added to her victory in the 1917 1000 Guineas by scoring in 1919 and 1920 Diomedes, a grandson of Sundridge, recorded a brace of victories in 1925 and 1926, on the latter occasion dead-heating with Phalaros, while flying grey Abernant landed the spoils in 1949 and 1950
Another dual winner was Right Boy, triumphant in 1958 and 1959 The son of Impeccable, purchased for 575 guineas by his trainer Bill Dutton - the winning rider on 1928 Grand National victor Tipperary Tim - also landed the Nunthorpe Stakes twice, the King George Stakes twice, the Cork & Orrery Stakes twice (now the Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes) and the King’s Stand Stakes (now the King Charles III Stakes)
In the 1970s, the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup was dominated by the formidable trainer-jockey partnership of Vincent O’Brien and Lester Piggott. They hit the bullseye four times during the decade, kicking off with Thatch in 1973, followed by Saritamer (1974), Solinus (1978) and Thatching (1979)
Piggott continued his excellent form in the race into the next decade, securing the 1980 renewal aboard Moorestyle This kick-started an outstanding period for the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup, with the next five winners - Marwell (1981), Sharpo (1982), Habibti (1983), Chief Singer (1984) and Never So Bold (1985) - all rated as the best sprinter in Europe in their year
The 1990s saw two big upsets in the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup Hamas, a 33-1 shot, triumphed under Willie Carson in 1993, getting the better of favourite College Chapel to deny Lester Piggott an 11th success in the event, while Compton Place shocked punters when landing the prize at 50-1 under Seb Sanders four years later
Agnes World holds the distinction of being the first ever Japanese-trained winner in Britain when taking the 2000 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup. Trained by Hideyuki Mori and ridden by ace Japanese jockey Yutaka Take, he prevailed in a thrilling finish by a short-head from Lincoln Dancer with another short-head back to Pipalong in third
As with so many Group One races, Vincent O’Brien’s successor at Ballydoyle, the unrelated Aidan O’Brien, has enjoyed great success in the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup with a joint-record five winners courtesy of Stravinsky (1999), Mozart (2001), Starspangledbanner (2010), US Navy Flag (2018) and Ten Sovereigns (2019)
MOST SUCCESSFUL HORSE:
Sundridge, the only triple winner, is the most successful horse in the July Cup. His victories came in 1902, 1903 and 1904
MOST SUCCESSFUL OWNER:
Jack Joel and Coolmore syndicates with various combinations of Sue Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith with five wins each are the most successful owners
Joel was successful with Sundridge (1903, 1904), Spanish Prince (1912, 1913) and Golden Sun (1914) The Coolmore winners so far are Stravinsky (1999), Mozart (2001), Starspangledbanner (2010), US Navy Flag (2018) and Ten Sovereigns (2019)
MOST SUCCESSFUL TRAINERS:
Charles Morton, Vincent O’Brien and Aidan O’Brien share the honour of being the most successful trainer with five July Cup wins apiece.
Morton’s five winners were Sundridge (1903, 1904), Spanish Prince (1912, 1913), and Golden Sun (1914) Vincent O’Brien scored with Thatch (1973), Saritamer (1974), Solinus (1978), Thatching (1979) and Royal Academy (1990)
Aidan O’Brien’s five victories so far have come courtesy of Stravinsky (1999), Mozart (2001), Starspangledbanner (2010), US Navy Flag (2018) and Ten Sovereigns (2019).
MOST SUCESSFUL JOCKEY:
Lester Piggott rode a record 10 July Cup winners - Vigo (1957), Right Boy (1958, 1959), Tin Whistle (1960), Thatch (1973), Saritamer (1974), Solinus (1978), Thatching (1979), Moorestyle (1980). and Mr Brooks (1992)
Among the current generation, two jockeys have ridden two winners:
John Egan – Pastoral Pursuits (2005), Les Arcs (2006)
Ryan Moore – US Navy Flag (2018), Ten Sovereigns (2019)
AGE OF WINNERS:
The age breakdown of winners since 1945 is below, showing that three years olds are the most successful age group, winning 39 of the 80 runnings in that time period (just under 49 per cent strike rate).

SNOW LIGHT hails from a stable that sent out subsequent 1000 Guineas winner Desert Flower in this maiden 12 months earlier and it looks significant she’s seemingly the choice of William Buick. She’s the pick before market clues, though Darkwing, Dancing Flower and Fan Me are a trio of other interesting newcomers to keep a close eye on in the betting. Orion’s Belt showed lots of ability on her debut at Salisbury last month and can put that experience to good use.

MISS NIGHTFALL has shaped notably well on both starts this season, including in the Sandringham Handicap at Royal Ascot latterly and surely won’t be long in resuming winning ways on that evidence. Miss Information was quite impressive in the Kensington Palace Stakes at the Royal Meeting and can make another bold bid from a 6lb higher mark, while Royal Velvet got back on track with a good third over C&D recently and ought to remain competitive.

PLAY SMARTER
A cracking renewal of the Bunbury Cup but MORE THUNDER has long promised to be suited by stepping back up to 7f and is fancied to quickly resume winning ways having just failed to get up in Royal Ascot’s Wokingham last time. Ten Pounds came home a place behind William Haggas’ colt that day and again rates the main threat, atlhough Akkadian Thunder, Myal and Ebt’s Guard all need factoring in too. Run Boy Run and Aalto complete the shortlist.

A fascinating handicap in which marginal preference is for BEDOUIN PRINCE who goes into handicaps firmly on the up and is fancied to continue Charlie Appleby’s superb record in this event. Both Raafedd (second choice) and Fifth Column didn’t enjoy the rub of the green in the Britannia at Royal Ascot and remain with better days ahead of them so rate big threats. Mister Winston completes the shortlist.

SUPERLATIVE STAKES (GROUP 2)
The youngest of the three Group Two contests staged at The July Festival for twoyear-olds, the Superlative Stakes was first run in 1972 as the Limekilns Plate and won by the Bernard van Cutsem-trained Great Love. In 1975, it was renamed the Limekilns Stakes.
From 1980 until 1990 it was named the Bernard van Cutsem Stakes in honour of the late Newmarket trainer before being known as the Superlative Stakes from 1991 onwards Heldoversevenfurlongs, itisopentocolts, geldingsandfillies, althoughrarelycontested by the latter. It has held Group Two status since 2006.
Shirley Heights (1977) was the best winner in the race’s early years and went on to win the Derby and Irish Derby in 1978. The 1991 winner Dr Devious also went on to score at Epsom Downs the following year while most recently City Of Troy (2023) was the spectacular six and a half lengths winner of the Superlative Stakes before going on to record an impressive victory in this year’s Derby.
Other significant winners over the years have included Dubawi (2004), who went on to win three Group One races the following year before a spectacular career at stud, and Olympic Glory (2012), a subsequent four-time Group One winner.
Sir Henry Cecil is the leading trainer of all-time in the contest with nine winners while among current handlers Charlie Appleby takes the lead with his five wins, most recently with Ancient Truth last year
Steve Cauthen, Pat Eddery, Richard Hughes and William Buick have each ridden four winners of this one Buick catching up with the other three following his success aboard Ancient Truth in 2024

Fresh off the back of a pair of novice successes here at Newmarket earlier in the season, Ancient Truth made it three wins from three starts with this impressive win, cementing himself as one of the most exciting juveniles around.
Kept in touch with the early leaders by William Buick, the son of Dubawi was excellent. Taking the lead entering the final furlong, he hung left a little but kept on well to take the crown.
Following this win he tried his hand in Group 1 company for the first time, posting a strong third in the Dewhurst, just half a length behind classy stablemate (and Middle Park Stakes winner) Shadow Of Light.

The latter represents connections with a formidable recent record in this race, but Italy looked particularly good at Leopardstown and is taken to follow in the hoofprints of City of Troy, who won this for the yard in 2023. The sole filly in the line-up, Venetian Lace, is third choice ahead of Saba Desert’s stablemate Wild Desert.

Mill Stream was the star of the show last year, the then four-year-old taking the feature race of the meeting in a stacked field which included the likes of Kinross, River Tiber, Inisherin and Vandeek.
Following up on his classy performance when winning the Clipper Stakes at York in May, he then picked up a third in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascpt (behind the reopposing Khaadem and Swingalong), coming into this in solid form.
William Buick kept his mount in touch early on, but he began to lose ground, finding himself at the rear from four furlongs out. He soon kicked back into gear, storming past the field on the far side and taking the lead inside the final furlong, a neck ahead of Swingalong in second.
AIDAN O’BRIEN
WON THIS CONTEST IN 2018AND 2019. HE SADDLES BOTH IDES OF MARCH & WHISTLEJACKET HERE TODAY
NOTABLE SPEECH
Had a great debut season, scoring in both the 2000 Guineas and the Sussex Stakes before rounding out last year with a third in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Currently winless this year, notching a pair of strong fourths in the Lockinge and the Queen Anne. Drops back to 6f here which should suit.
HHHHH
SYMBOL OF HONOUR
Representing the Charlie Appleby yard, this three-year-old has been busy this year Taking the win in a pair of Meydan sprints in the winter, he then raced three times back in the UK throughout May Finding success in the Carnavon Stakes at Newbury and the Sandy Lane at Haydock he now comes here looking for the hattrick.
FLORA OF BERMUDA
A daughter of Dark Angel, Andrew Balding’s filly has been impressing again this year, runner-up in the Clipper Stakes at York in May, a neck behind Inisherin before adding a third in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at the Royal Meeting last time out. She has a great chance of securing her first Group 1 win here.
HHHH
THE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD, DUBAI JULY
CUP STAKES PREVIEW
The July Festival reaches its peak today with the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup. A Group One contest over six furlongs for three-year-olds and upwards, it has a total prize fund of £657,000 with £372,584 going to the winner.
As befitting a race of such quality, we have a bumper 15-runner field with multiple Group One winners including the mighty NOTABLE SPEECH. After a blistering debut campaign last year which included stellar wins in both the 2000 Guineas on the Rowley Mile and in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, Notable Speech came into this season with plenty of expectation on his shoulders. While the wins have yet to come for the Dubawi colt, strong showings when fourth in both the Lockinge at Newbury and the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot show a colt that is ready to explode into life again. He drops down in trip to 6f for this one which should suit him perfectly and he is a likely winner today
Another former Group One winner is INISHERIN who took the Commonwealth Cup last season Kevin Ryan’s four-year-old contested this race last year and was predicted to do well, going off as the 11/8F. He was outpaced late on then, but a hard-fought win in the Clipper at York in May of this year following wind surgery suggests he could do better this time around He will have to do better than his relatively modest showing at Royal Ascot last time out though
WHISTLEJACKET won the July Stakes at this meeting last year before taking his first Group One victory in the Sumbe Prix Morny at Deauville in August He was well-beaten in the Commonwealth Cup last time out though. Another Commonwealth Cup runner, BIG MOJO was seventh there when last seen and has the ability to be a contender here. FLORA OF BERMUDA was narrowly edged out by the reopposing Inisherin at York in May. He raced well on that occasion and showed plenty when last seen in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Ascot
Charlie Appleby’s SYMBOL OF HONOUR scored in a pair of Meydan sprints in January and February and further success has followed back on these shores with wins in the Carnavon at Newbury and the Sandy Lane at Haydock. The three-year-old now comes here with hopes of a hattrick but will need a career best to deliver it BELIEVING is a former Group One winner after her Al Quoz Sprint win at Meydan in April though she wasn’t seen to full effect when 11th in the King Charles III last time out. Just behind her in 12th was NIGHT RAIDER. Karl Burke’s colt was also third behind Inisherin and Flora of Bermuda at York in his prior appearance
JASOUR is a course and distance winner at The July Festival, having been successful two years ago in the July Stakes He didn’t enjoy the best of runs though when sixth in last year’s Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup ROGUE LIGHTNING is also a course and distance winner, scoring here in a Novice race on debut back in 2022. Tom Clover’s gelding has been busy of late in Qatar and the USA and this race may be asking too much of him.
Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai, the UAE’s leading distributor of horse feeds and requisites is proud to sponsor today’s feature race, the Group1 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup and extends warm wishes to all participants.

IMPORTANT NOTICES
RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
