SPONSORS WELCOME

On behalf of everyone at Betfred a very warm welcome to Newmarket for The Betfred Guineas Festival.

When opening my first shop in Salford, Greater Manchester back in September 1967, not in my wildest dreams did I think that one day I would be headline sponsor of one of The Guineas, never mind both!

Yet all these years later I am so proud to be able to say that the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas completes the full set and Betfred are the very proud sponsor of all five British Classics The fact that this has never been done before makes it all the more special.

Looking back to my first ever Guineas as a bookmaker (which certainly does not feel like over fifty years ago!), I remember well that Sir Ivor obliged at 11/8 and was certainly one for the punters and I soon had a queue out of the door at the ‘pay-out’ window!

On that day Sir Ivor was ridden by the punters friend Lester Piggott and trainedbythegreatVincentO’Brienand a few weeks later they duly followed up in the Derby and another big queue!

Unfortunately, Sir Ivor never ran in the St Leger so no triple crown was won but just a couple of years later Piggott and O’Brien combined on the incomparable Nijinsky to land that famous classic treble – and yet more queues!!

With only one betting shop back in 1970 the ‘history’ value certainly did not make the payout any easier to take but I can honestly say that I would love to see the triple crown won again this year Fifty-five years has been far too long to wait for a repeat and so to add a little additional ‘encouragement’ I am putting up a bonus of £2,000,000 if any horse can win this years Betfred Triple Crown.

Finally, a big thank you to everyone who helps make these days so special, the management and staff of Newmarket Racecourse who have made Betfred feel so welcome, Jockey Club Racecourses, ITV Racing and Racing TV and never forgetting you, the racegoer (without fans there is no sport).

A British Classic is a very special occasion and we need them to thrive, I may be a bookmaker, but I am also a racing fan, and I intend to enjoy the very special atmosphere these races produce, be it here at Newmarket, Epsom Downs or Doncaster.

But for now we concentrate on three excellent days of racing here at HQ, hopefully we’ll see you again very soon at The Betfred Derby.

Enjoy the racing and be lucky.

Fred

A warm welcome to the Rowley Mile and the first day of the Betfred Guineas Festival. We have three fantastic days of racing to look forward to, along with entertainment for all to enjoy off the track.

Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our new sponsor Betfred, who generously sponsor all five of the Betfred British Classics for the first time. Betfred are also offering a bonus of £2 million to connections of any horse that wins the ‘Betfred Triple Crown’ – the Betfred 2000 Guineas, Betfred Derby and Betfred St Leger – a feat only achieved 15 times and not since the great Nijinsky in 1970.

WewouldalsoliketoextendourgratitudetoTrustATrader,Darley,Nyetimberandoddschecker for their generous support across today’s card.

We have a seven-race card to look forward to this afternoon, with the feature race, the Group 2 Betfred Jockey Club Stakes, run over 1 mile and 2 furlongs, often a chance to see some of the leading middle-distance horses for the first time in the season Al Kazeem, Defoe and Hurricane Lane are amongst some of the great horses who have added their name to the roll of honour for this race.

With Aston Martin as the Official Luxury Car Partner of the Jockey Club, do make sure you make your way to the Aston Martin plinth and the new Betfred Sports Zone.

Looking ahead, we have two more fantastic days of racing as the Betfred Guineas Festival continues, with both Classics, the Betfred 2000 Guineas and Betfred 1000 Guineas still to come There are tickets available for both these days either online, or on the gate

Across the season, we would like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their contributions to prize money and Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai for their continued sponsorship of our Owners and Trainers facility.

I hope that you all have a wonderful time here at Newmarket and wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck.

As a leading distributor of horse feed, bedding and supplements in the greater GCC area, I am once again immensely proud to support the Jockey Club at Newmarket Racecourses for the 2025 season. Newmarket is credited as being where thoroughbred racing first started which is why so many from every corner of the world Mile Rowley The appreciate and assemble and The July Course.

As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.

I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2025 season, the very best of luck.

Have a wonderful day at the races today.

YEARLING horse of either sex from 1 January to 31 December of the year following its birth.

RACE ONE

Zgharta is the clear form pick after her half-length second over a mile here on her return in April, but she is up against some well-bred newcomers. Dubawi filly Silent Love is well worth a market watch for Charlie Appleby, but a chance is taken on ZIVAH. A 300,000gns Lope De Vega filly, whose dam is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Dubai Mile, she may be the more forward of the two Gosdens’ newcomers in action here.

RACE TWO

Aurel was all out to win by a nose on his Kempton debut but he holds Classic entries and may have more to offer Ernst Blofeld ran on strongly to break his duck at Kempton and is likely to be the best of the Gosdens’ trio in this line up, but ALPINE TRAIL might be the one Charlie Appleby’s Dubawi colt is upped in class after wins at Wolverhampton and Yarmouth, coming clear each time, and any further improvement could see him land the hat-trick

RACE THREE

Pellitory caused a 25/1 surprise in a C&D conditions event on his return last month, but he is racing in Listed class now which he may not find as easy Symbol Of Honour has won both starts in Dubai this year and tries the seventh furlong for the third time having weakened late on as a juvenile, which all points to the chances of COSMIC YEAR An easy winner of both starts to date over this trip, he bypasses the 2000 Guineas for this easier contest and ought to reap the dividends

RACE FOUR

Having proved too keen on his fourth-placed reappearance at Nottingham last month, HORNSEA BAY could be worth chancing with that run under his belt An official rating of 88 on his handicap bow looks workable and his fitness could prove crucial. There are several interesting seasonal debutants on show, topped by Spectacular View, who did little wrong when runner-up in a decent novice at Kempton in December last year Dante’s Lad, Wild Nature and Brave Mission should have better days ahead too.

RACE FIVE

Having ended his 2024 campaign with a a good third in an Italian Group 2, it will be interesting to see how Tarkhan fares in the betting on his stable bow for Jamie Osborne. The six-year-old shouldn’t be underestimated reverting to handicap company, but FIFTY NIFTY rates as the most solid proposition. The four-year-old arrives on the back of a close-up second over C&D and a mere 2lb rise could prove to be lenient Alzahir can make his presence felt too.

RACE SIX

AMBIENTE FRIENDLY was undone by racing too keenly over a sharper trip on his seasonal/stable debut in the Earl Of Sefton last month Considering he went on from the same fixture last year to win Lingfield’s Derby Trial before a splendid second in the main event at Epsom, he can be forgiven that disappointing reappearance effort. The globetrotting Silver Knott is greatly feared after notching a fourth Group 2 success in the UAE in March. The John Porter winner Divina Grace can confirm her Newbury superiority over Bellum Justum

RACE SEVEN

CIRCE looks well worth another try back over six furlongs for only the second time in her career Rosy Affair, a winner on the July Course last June, is another obvious player given she could still be improving. Pearl Of Windsor struggled in a Listed race at Bath recently but is entitled to have come on for the run and can also have a big say.

History of Newmarket

Although humankind has raced horses since the dawn of civilisation – racing was an event at the ancient Greek Olympiads, for example – it is only in relatively recent history that it has been staged on an organised basis. In 1740 the government of Sir Robert Walpole, the de facto first Prime Minister of Great Britain, became concerned at the popularity of racing and the level of malpractice in the sport resulting from gambling. As a result, Walpole’s government introduced laws on minimum prize money values and weights to be carried in races The new laws proved ineffectual in its efforts to make racing less popular but it did have an impact on a group of racing enthusiasts who, fearing further government interference, came together in the coffee houses of London to form their own regulatory body for racing And so, in 1750 The Jockey Club emerged. Despite its name, The Jockey Club was not made up of jockeys but more members of high society – it was an 18th Century tradition that members of trades and professions were referred to by a description of their occupation – so what Mr Justice Hangem was to the judiciary, those connected to the racing would be known as Mr Jockie (the old spelling of Jockey) followed by surname. For example, an early member of The Jockey Club was Captain Richard Vernon – known in horseracing circles as “Mr Jockie Vernon”. The early activities of The Jockey Club were centred on the Star & Garter tavern on London’s Pall Mall, before it established its first formal London headquarters in Old Bond Street

While The Jockey Club was formally established and headquartered in London, Newmarket had emerged as the pre-eminent venue for horseracing in Great Britain under the dynasty of the House of Stuart. In 1752 The Jockey Club leased a plot of land and built a coffee house in the Suffolk town, a building which still exists today and has been beautifully restored and maintained as part of The Jockey Club Rooms on Newmarket High Street The Jockey Club’s presence in Newmarket was strengthened by the activities of one of its 19th Century members, Lord George Bentinck

It was Bentinck who provided the funds which enabled The Jockey Club to purchase the freehold of the land where The Jockey Club Rooms now stand. As the owner as a large expanse ofNewmarketHeath,Bentinckturnedacresofscrublandovertograssandpurchasedterritory adjacent to it to establish the gallops which still exist to this day. The link between the town of Newmarket and The Jockey Club remains as strong as ever to this day. The historic Jockey Club Rooms, which were rebuilt and expanded in the 20th Century, house one of the finest collections of equestrian art to be found anywhere in the world and serve as accommodation for visiting members of The Jockey Club as well as being available to members of the public on a commercial basis The Jockey Club also operates the two racecourses in Newmarket –the Rowley Mile and the July Course - operates and maintains the gallops in the town under the banner of Jockey Club Estates and also runs The National Stud, a renowned and highlyregarded centre of breeding excellence.

The connection between Newmarket and the horse is one of great antiquity. Queen Boadicea of the Iceni founded a Royal stud at Exning in the years following the death of Jesus Christ. Refusing to surrender to the Romans in 60AD Queen Boadicea took her own life by poisoning, leaving behind a legacy of a section of heathland south of Exning. That heathland contained six miles of earthwork fortifications which in time became to be referred to as the Devil’s Dyke It was more than 1,000 years after the death of Queen Boadicea that Sir Richard d’Argentine developed a “New Market” on land just south of Exning he had acquitted from the marriage dowry of his bride Cassandr d’I’Isle. The “New Market” developed into the town of Newmarket, which saw its population increase substantially in 1227 as people settled there to escape the plague. In the 17th Century Newmarket became a favourite destination of King James I and he moved the Royal court to the town for a time and built a palace. It was James’s courtiers who first raced horses on Newmarket Heath, with the first match race recorded as having taken place on March 8th 1622 Newmarket was further developed by James’s son Charles I who erected the first Grandstand on Newmarket Heath and by his grandson Charles II On his restoration to the throne in 1660, Charles II built a new palace in Newmarket which included a secret passage to the home of his mistress Nell Gwynn. The “Merry Monarch” was a proficient rider and won the first running of the Town Plate – a unique contest for amateur riders which exists to this day – on October 14th 1671.

THE CLASSICS

The Classics in British horse racing are the crown jewels of the sport, embodying centuries of tradition and prestige. These five races—The 1000 Guineas, 2000 Guineas, The Oaks, The Derby, and The St Leger—have shaped the history of the sport since their inception. Together, they represent the pinnacle of achievement for any thoroughbred, and their impact is felt far beyond the borders of the UK. The journey of the British Classics began in the 17th century, with the first St Leger Stakes run in 1776 at Doncaster

Over the years, these races have attracted the best horses, trainers, and jockeys, and their importance in the racing calendar has only grown. These iconic contests have been the setting for some of the sport’s most thrilling moments, including the rare achievement of the Triple Crown, a feat last accomplished by the legendary Nijinsky in 1970

Betfred’s historic sponsorship of all five of the British Classics, beginning in 2025, marks a new chapter in the rich legacy of these races As the first sponsor ever to hold the title of supporting all five Classics, Betfred is making a bold statement in its commitment to the sport. The bookmaker, led by founder Fred Done, has further elevated the importance of these races by offering the first ever bonus to any horse that wins the coveted “Betfred Triple Crown,” which consists of the 2000 Guineas, The Derby, and The St Leger. This extraordinary £2 million bonus, reflects Betfred’s passion for the sport and its ambition to cement the British Classics at the forefront of the sport.

With a focus on promoting the individual races, as well as their collective significance, The Jockey Club and Arena Racing Company have established a new identity for the British Classics. This refreshed brand will serve as a beacon of the races’ heritage, while also drawing attention to their ongoing relevance in today’s racing world The Betfred British Classics logo will be prominently displayed at Newmarket during the Betfred Guineas Festival, and this new identity will be used to educate and inspire racing fans about the historic and cultural significance of the Classics

THE ROAD TO THE BETFRED 2000 GUINEAS

RULING COURT

The Jumeirah 2000 Guineas Meydan

Saturday 1st March

Ruling Court delivered a commanding performance in the 2025 Jumeirah 2,000 Guineas at Meydan, securing victory by six lengths under jockey William Buick. Trained by Charlie Appleby for Godolphin, the three-year-old colt by Justify showcased his potential with a decisive win in this Listed turf race over a mile. Held up early, Ruling Court made a strong move in the final stages to take the lead and draw clear of the field. This victory marked his second win in three starts, following a debut success at Sandown and a third-place finish in the Group 3 Acomb Stakes at York.

SHADOW OF LIGHT

The Darley Dewhurst Stakes Newmarket

Saturday 12th October

The race unfolded with Expanded leading the field, closely followed by Ancient Truth. Shadow Of Light, typically a front-runner, was held up in midfield to conserve energy for the final sprint to the line. As the race progressed, Buick navigated the colt towards the stands’ side, finding a clear path to challenge the leaders. In the final furlong, Shadow Of Light surged forward, overtaking Expanded and holding off Ancient Truth to win by a neck and a further neck, respectively

FIELD OF GOLD

The bet365 Craven Stakes Newmarket

Wednesday 16th April

Field Of Gold delivered a dazzling performance in the 2025 bet365 Craven Stakes at Newmarket, asserting himself as a leading contender for the upcoming 2,000 Guineas. Trained by John and Thady Gosden and ridden by Kieran Shoemark, the Juddmonte-owned colt surged ahead in the final furlong to win by 3½ lengths over Wimbledon Hawkeye, with Aomori City finishing third

SCORTHY CHAMP

The Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes Curragh

Sunday 15th September

Scorthy Champ showed a fantastic attitude in a thrilling renewal of the 2024 Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes at the Curragh, defeating the previously unbeaten favourite Henri Matisse. Trained by Joseph O’Brien and ridden by Dylan Browne McMonagle, the 12/1 shot showed a game attitude to secure victory in the prestigious Group 1 race The colt’s performance looks to stand him in good stead for this years 2000 Guineas.

HISTORY OF THE BETFRED JOCKEY CLUB STAKES

The Betfred Jockey Club Stakes was first staged in 1894 and up until 1963 was staged over 10 furlongs in the autumn Initially, it was open to three-year-olds and upwards but from 1963 onwards it has been restricted to older horses. It was also in 1963 that the contest was moved to be run at the Guineas Festival and increased in distance to a mile and a half.

Isinglass, who the previous year had won the Triple Crown, won the first running in 1894 and in its early history the contest was frequently won by Classic winners with Persimmon (1896), Flying Fox (1899), Sceptre (1897), Rock Sand (1904) and St Amant (1905) all featuring on the roll of honour.

The last Derby winner to also be successful in The Jockey Club Stakes was St Paddy (1961) and since the changes to the contest in 1963 it tends now to be contested by improving older horses Phardante is the only multiple winner, recording back-to-back triumphs in 1986 and 1987

The late Lester Piggott is the most successful jockey of all-time in The Jockey Club Stakes with seven victories courtesy of Holmbush (1950), Nucleus (1955), Court Prince (1959), St Paddy (1961), Knockroe (1972), Relay Race (1974) and Ardross (1982). Among current riders, Ryan Moore and Frankie Dettori lead the way with three victories apiece

Alec Taylor, Jr saddled a record nine winners of The Jockey Club Stakes with Love Wisely (1897), Sceptre (1903), Sancy (1907), Lemberg (1910), Trois Temps (1914), Prince Chimay (1918), Lady Juror (1922), Inkerman (1923) and Book Law (1927)

French hander Andre Fabre is the most successful current trainer with two wins – Shirocco (2006) and Getaway (2008)

THE BETFRED JOCKEY CLUB STAKES

RACE DESCRIPTION: For four-year-olds and above, this one and a half mile contest is a Group 2 and will attract some of the highest-quality middle distance horses around this season. Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s official rating reflects the weight that they must carry, in a Group 2 all runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form. In this case colts and geldings carry 9st 1lb and fillies 8st 12lb although any runner which has already won a Group 1 or 2 race will be issued with a 3lb penalty.

The vote goes to the rock-solid ROSY AFFAIR, who has barely put a foot wrong to date and a 1lb rise for chasing home an upwardly mobile Godolphin filly on her final start of last season doesn’t look at all harsh. Circe is the clear main danger and, with recent race-fitness on her side, she won’t go down without a fight. Ormolulu appears to be more of a force on the all-weather and is third choice here more by process of elimination rather than a vote of confidence.

At Newmarket Racecourses we believe racing should be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. And one thing is certainly true, the more relaxed and comfortable we feel, the more likely we are to have a great time So that’s why we’ve created one very simple piece of guidance, to come “dressed to feel your best”.

We’re all unique, and no more so than in our sense of style and comfort. For some, wearing a nice sweatshirt, pair of jeans and clean trainers is what makes them feel confident and at-ease. For others, they might prefer to turn heads with a sharp suit or glamorous dress and high heels, particularly for one of our big race meetings.

But whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather Here’s some other useful tips and advice for making sure your time with us is as memorable as possible.

Fancy dress can often add colour and fun to our racedays, but please avoid inappropriate or offensive outfits, as anything deemed vulgar or derogatory may be refused entry.

We love other sports as much as anyone, but showing allegiance to a favourite club can sometimes appear antagonistic. So, to keep things simple, please refrain from wearing team kits when attending one of our racedays.

Only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets in the course of their business Any individuals found contravening these conditions will be evicted. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc, for any purpose at the racecourse.

EMERGENCY NOTICE

In an event of an emergency please be guided by our security stewards and by messages you will see and hear around the racecourse. We would advise that you keep your personal belongings with you at all times. In the event of an evacuation please do as requested by Newmarket Racecourses Management and security staff They will direct you to a safe place. Do not attempt to regain access to buildings

IMPORTANT NOTICES

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
