FESTIVAL FRIDAY

FRIDAY 11 JULY

A warm welcome to the July Course for the second day of the Debenhams July Festival, Festival Friday, headlined by a top-level contest in the form of the Group One Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Tattersalls, Weatherbys, Debenhams and Dubai Racing Club for their sponsorship of today’s card We are also extremely grateful to our betting partner bet365 for their generous support across the three days.

The Group One Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes, run over a mile for fillies and mare, has seen some of the most famed racehorses of recent years grace the track at the July Course. Including Soviet Song and Goldikova, and more recently Porta Fortuna, the race offers the first high profile opportunity for the top three-year-old fillies to test themselves against their older rivals.

We are also grateful to our headline partner, Debenhams, who are supporting us across all three days of the July Festival Head down to their Debenhams Day Spa, based trackside in the Grandstand and Paddock Enclosure, where youcanexpect interactivebeautybars, hair and make-uptouch up zonesandsome picture-perfectmoments.

We’re delighted to have the Dubai Racing Club with us today, in a partnership that saw The Jockey Club supporting a race at the Dubai Racing Carnival, along with working together to promote both race programmes to our horsemen, existing racegoers, followers of the sport and to new fans

Head down to the Grandstand and Paddock Enclosure for Darts with the Stars, where racegoers can compete with some of the leading darts players, including Keith Deller and Russ Bray. We also encourage racegoers to join us after racing to enjoy a DJ set full of feel-good tunes and dance anthems from DJ Cumminz. Please look at the racecourse map further in this racecard for locations of all activities.

Looking ahead, we have another fantastic day of racing tomorrow, with the conclusion of our July Festival, July Cup Day. The Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup is one of the most valuable and prestigious sprint races in the world and the winner is often acknowledged to be the best sprinter in Europe. Tickets are still available to purchase on the gate

Across the season, we would like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their contributions to prize money and Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai for their continued sponsorship of our Owners and Trainers facility.

I hope that you all have a wonderful time here at Newmarket and wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck

RACE ONE

Gelded over the winter, KING'S CHARTER remains unexposed having won a novice race over a mile at Doncaster on his seasonal debut He gave the strong impression this extra yardage would suit and the son of Kingman could prove to be favourably handicapped Ryan Moore partners War Hawk, who bids for a hat-trick raised 5lb, while Regalian just missed out at Musselburgh recently and he also merits consideration. The Charlie Johnston yard has won five of the last 10 renewals so Marhaba Ghaiyyath is another to note

Selection: KING'S CHARTER

RACE TWO

Danger; War Hawk

The Group 3 Albany Stakes winner VENETIAN SUN is difficult to oppose. Karl Burke's progressive filly won in fine style at Royal Ascot and can take this further step up in class in her stride Shine On Me wasn't disgraced over the minimum trip at the Royal meeting when sixth in the Queen Mary and this extra furlong should help her, while Argentine Tango continued her excellent progress with a Listed victory over C&D.

Selection: VENETIAN SUN

RACE THREE

Danger; Shine On Me

Story Horse has to be of interest, having gone close in a competitive handicap at Goodwood when beaten only a neck The winner went on to win over 1m6f at Royal Ascot last month, with ENDLESS VICTORY back in seventh, but that was the latter's first outing since February Charlie Appleby's charge caught the eye doing his best work at the finish and he should have plenty more to offer over this distance Dancing In Paris drops in trip after finishing an admirable second in the Northumberland Plate, while Insanity is not out of it either.

Selection: ENDLESS VICTORY

RACE FOUR

Danger; Story Horse

Crimson Advocate (winner), Cinderella's Dream (second) and Running Lion (fourth) are all set to lock horns again having met in the Duke Of Cambridge at Royal Ascot They look certain to play a role once again but, in receipt of the weight-for-age allowance, JANUARYcouldbetoostrong AidanO'Brien'sfillyfinishedahighly-creditablethirdintheCoronationStakes,aracewhichprobably wasn't run to suit. The daughter of Kingman is still progressing and a well-deserved success at the top table could await Elwateen struggled in the Oaks having seemingly not handled Epsom, but she retains potential and should not be written off at a big price.

Selection: JANUARY Danger; Crimson Advocate

RACE FIVE

The Gosdens have won two of the previous three renewals, including last year with the brilliant Field Of Gold, and their representative Oxagon merits respect with that in mind. Charlie Appleby also has an excellent record in this contest, though, and it is DISTANT STORM who gets the nod. A 90,000gns yearling before being purchased for 1.9m euros at the Arqana Breeze-Ups in May, he is related to a few smart winners and it would come as no surprise were he up to the task Others to note include Billecart, Exclusive Code and Constitution River.

Selection: DISTANT STORM Danger; Oxagon

RACE SIX

BRAVE MISSION may have disappointed in the Britannia, but he looked promising before that when second over this distance at Ascot. Dropping 1lb will help matters for this well-bred son of Frankel and he is narrowly preferred to Up The Pace, who proved his 33/1 Ascot triumph was no fluke when following up at Doncaster. Narrowly denied over shorter at Goodwood, Eminency has to enter the equation, along with recent course winner Saxonia and Sterling Knight.

Selection: BRAVE MISSION

RACE SEVEN

Danger; Up The Pace

NOGO'S DREAM impressed when seeing off the reopposing Grandlad (second) by just under a length at Windsor and, despite being 4lb worse off at the weights, Richard Hughes' charge is taken to follow up with Ryan Moore booked. Back to winning ways with a smooth performance at Sandown last month, Jenever is a player off 5lb higher Master Of My Fate has strong claims on his success at Lingfield two starts back

Selection: NOGO'S DREAM

Danger; Grandlad

TODAY’S FEATURE RACETHE TATTERSALLS FALMOUTH STAKES

Upgraded to Group One status in 2004, the Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes is one of the UK’s most prestigious races of the season for fillies and mares.

Established in 1911, the mile contest is named in honour of the sixth Viscount Falmouth, one of the leading owner-breeders of the 19th Century who was responsible for 16 English Classic victories between 1857 and 1883

Initially for three-year-olds only, the Falmouth Stakes was opened up to older fillies and mares in 1973 Appropriately, the inaugural running in 1911 fell to Alice, owned by the seventh Viscount Falmouth, son of the sixth Viscount, although few would have got rich backing the 1-10 favourite.

During its early history, the Falmouth Stakes was dominated by trainer Alec Taylor, known as “The Wizard of Manton”, who recorded six successes with First Spear (1914), Tomatina (1919), Lady Ava (1920), Blue Lady (1921), Leighon Tor (1922) and Maid Of Bath (1924)

Happy Laughter in 1953 became the first filly to win both the 1000 Guineas and the Falmouth Stakes in the same season Waterloo, in 1972, is the only other to have taken the two Newmarket contests

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Sonic Lady won the first running of the Falmouth Stakes with Group Two status in 1987, having also scored 12 months earlier. The Nureyev filly was a truly outstanding performer, having also won the Irish 1,000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes, Sussex Stakes and Prix du Moulin - all Group One events

Between 1993 and 1995, the combination of owner Lord Carnarvon and trainer Richard Hannon reigned supreme. Niche coasted home by an impressive three and a half lengths in 1993, while Lemon Souffle was not hard pressed to record a length and a quarter success a year later. The duo notched their third successive win in 1995 with Caramba, but this time the winning margin was just a short head.

The German raider Proudwings made history when she was victorious in 2001 by two lengths Trained by Cologne-based Ralf Suerland and ridden by leading Japanese jockey Yutaka Take, Proudwings was the first German-trained winner of a Pattern race in Britain since Star Appeal in the 1975 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park.

The 2004 renewal, the first with Group One status, saw the 1000 Guineas heroine Attraction take on the older generation for the first time Mark Johnston’s charge ran well but went down by two and a half lengths to the other star filly of the season, Soviet Song, losing her unbeaten record in the process.

Soviet Song returned in 2005 to defend her title and did so in style, comfortably defeating Alexander Goldrun by two and a half lengths under regular pilot Johnny Murtagh (who had been on board in 2004), albeit in a slower time than the previous year

The greatest winner ever is Goldikova (2009), a 14-time winner at Group/Grade One level, who created history by winning the Breeders’ Cup Mile in the USA on three occasions (2008, 2009 & 2010).

MOST SUCCESSFUL HORSES:

There have been two dual winners:

Sonic Lady (1986, 1987)

Soviet Song (2004, 2005)

MOST SUCCESSFUL TRAINERS:

Alec Taylor Jr and Sir Michael Stoute are the most successful trainers, with six victories apiece

Taylor’s winners were First Spear (1914), Tomatina (1919), Lady Ava (1920), Blue Lady (1921), Leighon Tor (1922) and Maid of Bath (1924).

Stoute has been successful so far with Royal Heroine (1983), Sonic Lady (1986 & 1987), Lovers Knot (1998), Integral (2014) and Veracious (2019).

James Fanshawe and John Gosden are the most successful current trainers with three wins each. Fanshawe triumphed in three consecutive years with Macadamia (2003) and Soviet Song (2004 & 2005) while Gosden, who now trains in partnership with his son Thady, was on the mark with Ryafan (1997), Elusive Kate (2013) and Nazeef (2020).

MOST SUCESSFUL JOCKEY:

The late Lester Piggott is the most successful jockey in the race of all time with seven winsSylphide (1957), Green Opal (1960), Chrona (1966), Vital Match (1969), Chalon (1982), Niche (1993) and Lemon Souffle (1994).

Ryan Moore is the most successful current jockey with four wins – Integral (2014), Alice Springs (2016), Roly Poly (2017) and Porta Fortuna (2024).

AGE OF WINNERS:

In the 51 runnings since it became an all-aged affair in 1973, three-year-olds have the best record with 34 successes.

The overall age breakdown is as below:

3YO – 34 wins

4YO – 16 wins

5YO – 2 wins

SHORTEST-PRICED WINNER & LONGEST-PRICED WINNER: Alice (1911), 1-10 Rajeem (2006), 50-1

FAVOURITES:

DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE STAKES

The Duchess of Cambridge Stakes takes place over six furlongs and is the fillies’ equivalent of the July Stakes, which takes place over the same distance for colts and geldings on day one of The July Festival.

First staged in 1947, it was known as the Cherry Hinton Stakes up to and including 2012 before gaining its current title in 2013 in honour of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. Formerly a Group Three race, it was upgraded to Group Two status in 1996.

Over the years, it has provided a number of future Classic winners including Sweet Solera (1960), Pia (1996), Mysterious (1972), Diminuendo (1987), who all went on to land the Oaks at Epsom Downs. In addition, Sweet Solera (1960), Pia (1966), Mysterious (1972), Sayyedati (1992), Attraction (2003) and Mawj (2022) all won the 1000 Guineas on the Rowey Mile the following spring.

As well as Attraction and Mawj, another significant winner this century is Arabian Queen (2014), who went on to cause a 50-1 upset when defeating Derby victor Golden Horn in the 2015 Juddmonte International at York

Frankie Dettori and Walter Swinburn are the leading jockeys with five winners each, while Sir Henry Cecil and Sir Michael Stoute share leading trainer honours with four victories apiece

TRAINER: SIMON & ED CRISFORD

JOCKEY: HARRY DAVIES

OWNER: SHAIKH DUAIJ AL KHALIFA

In a race that looked set to be a showcase for the classy Heavens Gate, it was in fact Simon & Ed Crisford’s Arabian Dusk who took home the prize.

The filly had shown flashes but had yet to truly shine in her two starts leading into this contest, but she raced superbly here. Keeping the pressure on the leaders, she kept on well to edge out a gutsy win inside the final 110 yards.

Charlie Appleby’s Mountain Breeze also raced very well but was only able to manage second with the market leader Heavens Gate taking third.

VENETIAN SUN is taken to follow in the hoofprints of Dandalla, who landed this race for the Karl Burke yard in 2020 on the back ofwinning theAlbany Stakes. Indeed, the Starman filly looked potentially smart at Royal Ascot, landing that Group 3 in convincing fashion, and she will prove hard to beat. Shine On Me and Spicy Marg, sixth and tenth respectively in the Queen Mary at the Royal meeting, are taken to fill the places.

THE TATTERSALLS FALMOUTH STAKES PREVIEW

Today’s Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes is the feature of the day and is one of the first opportunities for three-year-olds to take on older fillies and mares at Group One level. A field of eight has been declared for the mile contest.

This year’s Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes looks to be an engaging contest as Royal Ascot’s Duke Of Cambridge Stakes one-two CRIMSON ADVOCATE and CINDERELLA’S DREAM are set to renew their rivalry. The former represents the Gosden yard and was the victor at Ascot last time out after a stunning performance. Add in her success at Goodwood in May and she comes here today seeking a hattrick of wins The latter may have come up short then but was a convincing winner in the Dahlia Stakes over on the Rowley Mile in May and is not to be discounted She seems to have the edge in betting too at the time of writing

Hoping to play spoiler will be Aidan O’Brien’s JANUARY. While yet to score this term, the three-year-old daughter of Kingman notched a strong third in the Coronation Stakes at the Royal Meeting last month.

The Gosden yard has a second contender here in the form of RUNNING LION The oldest of this year’s field, things didn’t go her way in this contest last year, but she certainly has the quality to get involved this time around.

Roger Varian’s ELMALKA raced well in the Dahlia but ultimately proved no match for Cinderella’s Dream. A solid performance in the Group 1 Prix d’lspahan at Longchamp followed and this daughter of Kingman could be a dark horse

ELWATEEN is one of the more lightly-raced of today’s field. This Saeed bin Suroor-trained filly has only raced three times to date Form this year has been mixed and she didn’t handle the distance in the Oaks at Epsom last time out, so the drop in trip here should suit.

The second of our two Irish runners, ATSILA scored on her first two starts, including taking the Athasi Stakes at the Curragh in May. She was unable to match that form in the Irish 1,000 Guineas but that can be excused by her tough start.

Completing today’s line-up is German filly LADY ILZE who was a confident winner of the German 1,000 Guineas back in May and could spring a surprise.

The three-year-old Porta Fortuna came into this contest in red-hot form. Fresh off her close second to Elmalka in the 1000 Guineas in May, she soon went one better to take the Coronation Stakes in fine style at the Royal Meeting.

Racing on the far side, she was in a prominent position throughout much of the mile race Taking the lead over two furlongs out, the classy filly soon pulled clear to win by three and a quarter lengths and justify her heavy favouritism.

Chasing herhome in secondwas RogerVarian’s Jabaara with Rogue Millenium rounding out the podium positions.

PLAY SMARTER

Six ofthe last nine runnings ofthis have been won by 3-y-os and JANUARY, who is the clear pick ofthe quartet representing the Classic generation, is taken to enhance that trend. The Kingman filly banished memories of her low-key reappearance in the Irish 1000 Guineas with a solid effort at Royal Ascot and she should be spot-on now. Cinderella’s Dream wasn’t at her best when beaten by Crimson Advocate at the Royal meeting and may well reverse those placings here and emerge as the main danger

Race preview from Weatherbys

The fifth race on this afternoon’s card is the WeatherbysBritishEBFMaidenStakes, aclass 3 event staged over seven furlongs and a race which was won in 2024 by Field Of Gold. This year’s Irish 2,000 Guineas and recent St James’sPalaceStakeswinnerreadilyjustified favouritismtobeatadozenrivalsandagain,a sizeablefield(14)assemblesthisyear.

Only three of the 14 have run previously, with Owen Burrows’ Hengroin having shown the best form when runner-up on his second startatWindsor.Thewinnerhassincefinished worse than mid-division in the Coventry Stakes and the Lucky Vega colt steps up in distance again, having early run over the minimumtripatSalisbury.

As well as winning the race last year, John & ThadyGosdenalsotookthe2022renewalwith Epictetus and the duo rely on Oxagon this afternoon.AGalileocolt,heisahalf-brotherto asixfurlongwinner.

Charlie Appleby won division one in 2017, won the 2018 renewal and struck again in 2021 when Noble Truth was successful. The in-form trainer runs two, with William Buick presumably opting to partner the Night Of Thunder colt, DistantStorm. Out of a George Washington mare, he is a full-brother to Jessica Harrington’s Group 3 winner Beautiful Morning and cost Godolphin €1.9m last May. HeholdsanentryintheNationalStakesatthe CurraghinSeptember.

Stable-mate Catullus is an Invincible Spirit coltandonewhoGodolphinbredthemselves.

Distant Storm is a full-brother to Jessica Harrington’s Group 3 winner Beautiful Morning

His pedigree wouldn’t be quite as appealing onpaper.

Godolphin have a third runner – in the shape of the Saeed Bin Suroor-trained colt Sword Maker – and that duo teamed up to win this race in 2016 with Dubai Hero. A half-brother to a Japanese debutant winner last Autumn (also wore the royal blue of Godolphin), he is byPinatubo, whowasunbeateninsixstartsas ajuvenile, somesixyearsago.

AndrewBaldingisanotherwithagoodrecord in the race – having won it twice since 2020 – and he runs VenetianPrince in the colours of Jeff Smith. A St Mark’s Basilica chestnut, there is plenty of stamina on the dam’s side of his pedigree, him being a half-brother to recent Northumberland Plate winner Spirit Mixer, although Arabian Queen (winner of the Juddmonte International 10 years ago) has producedwinnersoverthistrip.

Constitution River represents the powerful AidanO’Brienstable, withtheWoottonBassett colt another who has plenty of stamina in his pedigree, whilst Billecart (Karl Burke), Exclusive Code (Archie Watson) and Lost Signal(RichardHannon)areotherswhomake appealonpaper, giventheirbreedingandthe stables they represent. This looks like it could beastrongrenewal.

It’s likely this will go to a newcomer, with the suggestion being very expensive breeze-up purchase DISTANT STORM, who is Group 1-entered in the autumn, before any market clues are known. The Gosden stable has a good recent record in this race so Oxagon rates another likely type. Constitution River, Billecart and Exclusive Code are other debutants with plenty to recommend them.

Plenty with chances but GRANDLAD rates just the pick of the weights off the same mark as when a resurgent Windsor second so gets the nod over Catch Cunningham who didn’t enjoy the rub of the green when fourth at Lingfield recently Jenever and Nogo’s Dream also enter calculations along with Master of My Fate

LOOKING AHEAD TO TOMORROWS RACING

The Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup, the centrepiece of the three-day Debenhams July Festival, is one of the most valuable sprint contests in the European racing calendar, with the 2025 running worth an advertised £600,000.

Sponsored for the first time by Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai this year, the Group One event is run over six furlongs on the famous July Course Springfield, bred by Queen Victoria at the Hampton Court Stud, took the inaugural running in 1876, and followed up a year later to become the first dual winner Springfield also proved top-class over longer distances, landing the Champion Stakes over 10 furlongs in 1877

Other outstanding victors in the early years included Sundridge, successful in 1902, 1903 and 1904 - the only triple winner in the history of the race. The son of Amphion was a true rags to riches story, having graduated from selling company. He was also a great success at stud, being a highly influential sire in Europe and North America.

The great mare Diadem added to her victory in the 1917 1000 Guineas by scoring in 1919 and 1920. Diomedes, a grandson of Sundridge, recorded a brace of victories in 1925 and 1926, on the latter occasion dead-heating with Phalaros, while flying grey Abernant landed the spoils in 1949 and 1950

Another dual winner was Right Boy, triumphant in 1958 and 1959 The son of Impeccable, purchased for 575 guineas by his trainer Bill Dutton - the winning rider on 1928 Grand National victor Tipperary Tim - also landed the Nunthorpe Stakes twice, the King George Stakes twice, the Cork & Orrery Stakes twice (now the Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes) and the King’s Stand Stakes (now the King Charles III Stakes)

In the 1970s, the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup was dominated by the formidable trainer-jockey partnership of Vincent O’Brien and Lester Piggott. They hit the bullseye four times during the decade, kicking off with Thatch in 1973, followed by Saritamer (1974), Solinus (1978) and Thatching (1979)

Piggott continued his excellent form in the race into the next decade, securing the 1980 renewal aboard Moorestyle This kick-started an outstanding period for the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup, with the next five winners - Marwell (1981), Sharpo (1982), Habibti (1983), Chief Singer (1984) and Never So Bold (1985) - all rated as the best sprinter in Europe in their year

The 1990s saw two big upsets in the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup Hamas, a 33-1 shot, triumphed under Willie Carson in 1993, getting the better of favourite College Chapel to deny Lester Piggott an 11th success in the event, while Compton Place shocked punters when landing the prize at 50-1 under Seb Sanders four years later

Agnes World holds the distinction of being the first ever Japanese-trained winner in Britain when taking the 2000 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup Trained by Hideyuki Mori and

ridden by ace Japanese jockey Yutaka Take, he prevailed in a thrilling finish by a short-head from Lincoln Dancer with another short-head back to Pipalong in third

As with so many Group One races, Vincent O’Brien’s successor at Ballydoyle, the unrelated Aidan O’Brien, has enjoyed great success in the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup with a joint-record five winners courtesy of Stravinsky (1999), Mozart (2001), Starspangledbanner (2010), US Navy Flag (2018) and Ten Sovereigns (2019)

IMPORTANT NOTICES

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
