SUNDAY 7TH MAY 2023
Official Racecard: £3.50
On behalf of my brothers and fellow directors of QIPCO, I am extremely proud to welcome you to another outstanding QIPCO Guineas Festival at Newmarket.
As you will know, my brothers and I share a passion for British horse racing and its rich history. We founded Qatar Racing in 2012 and base our extensive racing and breeding operations at Tweenhills in Gloucestershire. We began sponsorship of the QIPCO British Champions Series in 2011 and delight in the continued success of the worldrenowned and ground-breaking series, which commences with the QIPCO Guineas Festival this weekend and concludes on QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot in October.
This weekend we also celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty The King Charles III Horse racing has enjoyed a special relationship with the Royal Family for over 350 years from the sport’s founding patron, King Charles ll through to Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Now we wish His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen the greatest success as they take up the baton with their own racehorses including Saga, who runs here at Newmarket this Coronation weekend.
We truly recognise that young racegoers are the future of our sport and are proud to have launched ‘Club 26’ in conjunction with QIPCO
British Champions Series. Our aim is to bring 18 to 26-year-olds closer to the action on the finest 26 days of flat racing in Britain and to enthuse and educate them about this wonderful sport of Kings
The QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame was launched in 2021, marking the 10th anniversary of our sponsorship. Earlier this week legendary ten-time Champion trainer Sir Michael Stoute was inducted along with Sea The Stars, the superstar winner of the 2000 Guineas in 2009. Two further Hall of Fame additions will be announced later this year
We know first-hand how special memories are made at the QIPCO Guineas Festival as our own Kameko became the fastest ever winner of the QIPCO 2000 Guineas in 2020 Kameko now stands alongside our other Qatar Racing stallions at Tweenhills, and we cannot wait for his first runners to hit the track next year. We wish connections similar good fortunes throughout the 2023 QIPCO British Champions Series and look forward to celebrating another sensational season of magnificent sport with you all.
HH Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al Thani Chief Executive Officer QIPCO HoldingA warm welcome to Newmarket Racecourse and to QIPCO 1000 Guineas Day, the final day of the threeday QIPCO Guineas Festival, and a chance to see some of the leading three-year-old fillies in action.
Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank both QIPCO and British Champions Series for their support across the three days of the QIPCO Guineas Festival here at the Rowley Mile We are also extremely grateful to both Howden and bet365, who have joined us as sponsors across today’s card There are now eight races, with the bet365 Gordon Richards Stakes being run here at Newmarket, having moved from Sandown Park following an abandonment.
The feature race today is the QIPCO 1000 Guineas, the first of the Classics for three-year-old fillies. Since the race’s inception, some of the true greats of flat racing have made their way onto the roll of honour, including Pretty Polly, Sun Chariot and Oh So Sharp, whilst more recently Love is one of the leading names to have taken the honours.
Off the track, our Coronation Garden Party continues in the Garden Enclosure, with entertainment for all the family to enjoy. From bouncy castles, funfair games and a puppet show, make sure to head down to experience all the fun. We also encourage racegoers to join us on the Hyperion Lawn after racing, where there will be a set from famed DJ Edith Bowman.
We have a stunning exhibition of unique hats on display in Champions Gallery throughout the weekend being auctioned off to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research Inspired by the colours of royal racing silks, these hats were specifically created for this auction by 22 members of the British Hat Guild including milliner to the stars Stephen Jones OBE and the Queen’s former milliner, Rachel Trevor-Morgan. Further details can be found at www.braintumourresearch.org/fundraise/hat-auction.
Looking ahead, we have another fantastic weekend of racing back here at the Rowley Mile, where we host the Suffolk Day on Saturday 20th May. There will be an opportunity for our racegoers to come up close to all things Suffolk, even a Suffolk Punch! Tickets are available through the Newmarket Racecourse website.
Across the season, we would like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their contributions to prize money and Al Basti Equiworld for their continued sponsorship of our Owners and Trainers facility.
I hope that you all have a wonderful time here at Newmarket and wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck
Warm wishes,

Our involvement in community and charitable activities in Newmarket has the single aim of making a positive impact to Newmarket as a whole. Whether it’s a collaborative role in some of the large number of ongoing community projects or using our own resources and expertise, we enjoy playing our part. Our community work has taken many different forms over the years, and continues to evolve to match the ever changing needs of Newmarket and its residents. Examples include support of the ongoing education programmes in conjunction with Godolphin at local primary schools and the Newmarket Academy, as well as being involved in improvements to the Memorial Gardens. More recently, during the pandemic organisations from right across Newmarket came together to support the town and its residents. This included setting up helplines, delivering food parcels and organising a Christmas parade The relationships and positive momentum created during the last few years has continued, with recent projects including:
– Improving the Yellow Brick Road
– Clearing the Community Orchard
– Partnering with Newmarket Open Door
– Delivering ongoing talks on road safety in local schools
– Supporting the grassroots teams of Newmarket FC We have plenty more projects in the pipeline and for as long as The Jockey Club is in Newmarket, we will remain committed to contributing positively to the community Our community work also extends to longer term initiatives to help the town, Such as being involved in an exciting new initiative called The Newmarket Charitable Foundation.
There will be roaming music throughout the day by the Fat Cats Brass Band, The Snapchaps and The Pops Sets will vary throughout the day with music starting as gates open
You can also expect a roaming caricaturist, ‘Paparazzi’ to take your photo as you arrive at the racecourse and magician to wow you throughout the day.
The Garden Enclosure entertainment will be in use from gates opening until the last race There will be a bouncy castle, inflatable helter skelter, puppet shows, face painting and more
There will be an After Racing DJ set by Edith Bowman (approx. 90 mins duration) starting approximately 15 mins after the last race This will take place on the stage on the Hyperion Lawn
Anmaat struck by a head in the Prix Dollar at Longchamp when last seen in October to make it five wins out of his last six starts, which shows his rapid riseintheranksandheishighlylikelytobeonthepremiseshere However,FRANCESCOCLEMENTEjustshadesthevote, ashewasamightilyimpressive when scoring by nine lengths on his handicap debut at short odds on the July Course here last summer and is the type his stable do very well with Therefore, he is fancied to find the improvement needed to strike Derby hero Adayar is a top-class performer and holds an obvious chance.
Cemhaan is rated 9lb higher than when winning this race last year and is of interest after undergoing a wind operation since finishing down the field at Doncaster on his last start, but preference is still for DUTY OF CARE, who has been in fine form on the all-weather. He ran well when second behind Bandinelli at Kempton last month and he goes off only 1lb higher in a firsttime tongue-tie, so he could go close at a price. Halic, Roberto Escobarr and Firstman are others to consider.
FLOATING SPIRIT is unbeaten in two starts to date, the latest of those victories coming at Lingfield when scoring by three lengths The daughter of Charm Spirit could have any amount of improvement in the locker on only her third start and, with the step up in trip possibly a positive move, she could prove the one to beat The main danger comes in the shape of Queen Of Fairies, who got off the mark at the first time of asking when an easy winner at Southwell over a mile and has to be considered, along with Trust The Stars.
PROSPEROUS VOYAGE was highly tried last season and managed to make her mark at the highest level when taking the Falmouth in July She was only denied by a neck in the 1000 Guineas on her return to action a year ago and the daughter of Zoffany is the one to beat With
The Moonlight is officially rated 1lb superior to the selection but could be vulnerable under a 3lb penalty for her Group 2 victories in Dubai earlier in the year Life In Motion is an interesting raider from France, while there may be further progression to come from Al Husn
Tahiyra sets the standard based on her impressive defeat of Meditate in the Moyglare at the Curragh last September and that filly is her main market rival here. That said, itwouldbenosurpriseifsheprovedtobeatherbestlaterintheyearandmarginalpreferenceisforMAMMASGIRL RichardHannon’sfillycreatedabigimpression whentakingtheNellGwynover7fherelastmonthandthewayshefinishedthatdaysuggeststhattheextradistanceshouldnotbeaproblem Remarqueealsowonher trialwell, asthefinalwinningmarginofaneckisnotanaccuratereflectionofhersuperiorityonthatoccasion OtherstonoteareDreamOfLove,LezooandPowerdress
The market will be a key guide but a chance can be taken with the 265,000gns purchase MASHADI, who is likely to be ready to go first time out given his connections. On Point is another to consider being a half-brother to a Group 3-winning juvenile last year in Fairy Cross Jasour cost 85,000 pounds as a yearling and is from the family of Twilight Son, while Kylian and Rising Force are others to note.
A decent two-year-old last year, who contested some valuable contests, HECTIC returned with a solid runner-up effort at Newbury last month The step up to a mile can see him go one better on this occasion, with easy Epsom scorer Kadovar and recent C&D third Gulmarg looking best placed to chase him home. Legend Of Leros and Saxon King are not without chances either
RATHGAR ended last season with a comfortable success at Goodwood and he looks just the type to improve over further, with a mark of 85 looking manageable on his handicap debut Cool Party arrives in search of a hat-trick, so must enter calculations, along with Mindset, who has plenty of potential going up in trip Narrowly denied on his return at Kempton last month, My Lion can also have a say in proceedings
We kicked things off here at Newmarket with the three-day bet365 Craven Meeting, a midweek bonanza with a habit for producing Classic clues. The meeting’s Craven Stakes and the Nell Gwyn Stakes gave the chance for colts and fillies with Guineas aspirations to test their mettle on the Rowley Mile in advance of this weekend’s QIPCO
The proof is in the pudding, with last year’s Nell Gwyn winner Cachet following up in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas for George Boughey, while each the last two Craven winners Native Trail (2022) and Master Of The Seas (2021) both went on to finish second in the following month’s
We kick off May with another three-day meeting, the QIPCO Guineas Festival, which brings us the first two Classics of the season, with the 2000 Guineas for the colts and the 1000 Guineas for the fillies It’s been a vintage era for the Classics and hopefully we unearth a horse to follow in the footsteps of Sea The Stars (2009), Frankel (2011), Minding (2016) and Love (2020).
The highlight of the summer is the Boodles July Festival, where we’re never short of a story or two. However, all of the focus this year will inevitably be on the legendary Frankie Dettori, who’s in his final year of riding The July Cup is the last British Group One missing from his CV and there will be some reception for racing’s most popular figure if he can finally pull it off.
It would be rude to just focus on one race, though, as the July Festival is chock-full of top-class racing across the three days Both the Group Two July Stakes and the Group One Falmouth Stakes regularly feature quality fields, while the bet365 Bunbury Cup is a hugely popular (and competitive) curtain-raiser for the big one.
Attention turns to the bet365 Cambridgeshire meeting as we head into the autumn, as we host our hugely popular three-day meeting. This meeting encapsulates the here and now as well as looking to the future, with the ultra-competitive handicap complimented by some top two-year-old contests. Held on a blockbuster Saturday afternoon of this meeting are the Group One Middle Park Stakes for the colts and the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes for the fillies Run over six furlongs, both races are seen as early pointers for the following year’s Guineas
Continuing the theme of looking forward is the Dubai Future Champions Festival, on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th October. The clue is very much in the name, but this weekend is where future stars are born and is headlined by the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes One of the most prestigious two-year-old races in Europe, this race boasts one of the most impressive roll of honours around and hopefully the next Classic winner is just around the corner
By Nick SeddonAs a leading distributor of horse feed, bedding and supplements in the greater GCC area, I am once again immensely proud to support the Jockey Club at Newmarket Racecourses for the 2023 season.
Newmarket is credited as being where thoroughbred racing first started which is why so many from every corner of the world assemble and appreciate The Rowley Mile and The July Course.
As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.
I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2023 season, the very best of luck.
Have a wonderful day at the races today.

The QIPCO 1000 Guineas is the fillies’ equivalent of the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, both of which are run over the historic Rowley Mile at Newmarket. As with the 2000 Guineas, the Classic is so named because the original prize fund was 1,000 Guineas
The youngest of the British Classics, the 1000 Guineas was first staged in 1814 and won by Charlotte, ridden by Bill Clift and owned by Christopher Wilson, the same combination responsible for Wizard, the initial victor of the 2000 Guineas
Like the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, the QIPCO 1000 Guineas is part of the QIPCO British Champions Series and has a total prize fund of £500,000 in 2023
Four fillies have completed the 1000 Guineas-2000 Guineas double. The last was Sceptre in 1902, who was also successful in the Oaks and St Leger. The other fillies to win both Newmarket Classics are Crucifix (1840), Formosa (1868) and Pilgrimage (1878)
In 1825, the Duke of Grafton’s Tontine was the sole participant in the 1000 Guineas At the other end of the spectrum, the largest field was 29 in 1926, when Pillion was successful at 25-1 The maximum field size allowed now is 25
Homecoming Queen recorded the greatest winning margin since 1900 when scoring by nine lengths in 2012 under Ryan Moore During the same period, six winners have scraped home by a short-head, namely Atmah (1911), Fair Isle (1930), Highclere (1974), Nocturnal Spree (1975), Oh So Sharp (1985) and Las Meninas (1994) Jacqueline Quest was a nose in front of Special Duty in the 2010 renewal only for the places to be reversed in the stewards’ room.
The longest-priced 1000 Guineas winner is Billesdon Brook, returned at 66-1 in 2018 The shortest-priced was Crucifix, whose odds were 1-10 when taking the 1840 renewal
A total of 81 of the 209 runnings have been won by either the favourite or a joint-favourite – a strike rate of just under 39 per cent Sent off at 11-10, Minding in 2016 was the most recent winning favourite.
A total of 49 fillies have won both the 1000 Guineas and Oaks at Epsom Downs. Neva was the first in 1817 and Love the latest in 2020
One of the true heroines of the 1000 Guineas was Tagalie, successful in 1912 and the only winner to go on and land the Derby.
Sceptre, successful in the 1902 1000 Guineas, remains the only winner of four British Classics outright, having also succeeded in the 2000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger She also finished fourth in the only other British Classic, the Derby.
Hannah captured the 1000 Guineas in 1871 and was one of the most outstanding fillies of her era. She progressed to claim the fillies’ Triple Crown - the 1000 Guineas, the Oaks and St Leger. Another six fillies have also managed this feat –Apology (1874), La Fleche (1892), Pretty Polly (1904), Sun Chariot (1942), Meld (1985) and Oh So Sharp (1085).
A total of 14 winners since 1900 have been trained in Ireland - Rhodora (1908, trained by James Allen), Pourparler (1964 Paddy Prendergast), Glad Rags (1966 Vincent O’Brien), Nocturnal Spree (1975 Stuart Murless), Las Meninas (1994 Tommy Stack), Virginia Waters (2005 Aidan O’Brien), Finsceal Beo (2007 Jim Bolger), Homecoming Queen (2012 Aidan O’Brien), Legatissimo (2015 David Wachman), Minding (2016 Aidan O’Brien), Winter (2017 Aidan O’Brien), Hermosa (2019 Aidan O’Brien), Love (2020 Aidan O’Brien) and Mother Earth (2021 Aidan O’Brien).
There have been 17 French-trained winners since 1900 -1929 Taj Mah (trained by Juan Torterolo), Kandy (1932 Frank Carter), Mesa (1935 Albert Swann), Imprudence (1947 Jacques Lieux),Camaree(1950AlexandreLieux),RoseRoyale(1957AlecHead),BellaPaola(1958Francois Mathet), Never Too Late (1960 Etienne Pollet), Hula Dancer (1963 Etienne Pollet), Flying Water (1976 Angel Penna), Ma Biche (1983 Criquette Head), Miesque (1987 Francois Boutin), Ravinella (1988 Criquette Head), Hatoof (1992 Criquette Head), Natagora (2008 Pascal Bary), Special Duty (2010 Criquette Head-Maarek) and Miss France (2014, Andre Fabre)
Robert Robson with nine winners – Corinne (1818), Catgut (1819), Rowena (1820), Zeal (1821), Whizgig (1822), Zinc (1823), Tontine (1825), Problem (1826) and Arab (1827)
Among current trainers, Aidan O’Brien is the most successful with seven winners - Virginia Waters (2005), Homecoming Queen (2012), Minding (2016), Winter (2017), Hermosa (2019), Love (2020) and Mother Earth (2021)
George Fordham with seven winners - Mayonaise (1859), Nemesis (1861), Siberia (1865), Formosa (1868), Scottish Queen (1869), Thebais (1881), Hauteur (1883)
Frankie Dettori and Ryan Moore lead the way among current jockeys with four wins each. Dettori scored aboard Cape Verdi (1998), Kazzia (2002), Blue Bunting (2011) and Mother Earth (2021).
Moore was successful on Homecoming Queen (2012), Legatissimo (2015), Minding (2016) and Love (2020).
Ghanaati set a new record time for the 1000 Guineas in 2009, recording 1m 34.22s which was 0.72s faster than Finsceal Beo’s 1m 34.94s in 2007
Queen Elizabeth II owned the 1974 heroine Highclere while her father, King George VI, saw both Hypernicum (1946) and Sun Chariot (1942) carry his colours to victory. King George V was victorious with Scuttle in 1928 and, way back in 1896, Thais triumphed for the Prince of Wales (later to become King Edward VII)

The first formal match race famously took place on Newmarket Heath in 1622, and over the following century the practice grew rapidly in popularity In 1740 the government of Sir Robert Walpole became concerned at the popularity of racing and the gambling that took place on it.
New laws were introduced to try to regulate the activity and make it less popular, but they proved ineffective. Fearing further government intervention, racing enthusiasts came together in the coffee houses of London and in 1750 they created racing’s own regulatory body:The Jockey Club
Despite its name, The Jockey Club has never been a club for jockeys. In the 18th century it was traditional for professionals and tradespeople to be described by their occupations, with a first name of “Mr Jockie” for those in racing. Although early meetings were based in London, Newmarket was already the home of horseracing and it was just two years before The Jockey Club laid down permanent roots there.
In 1752 The Jockey Club leased a plot of land in Newmarket and built a coffee house, and in the 19th century the land was acquired permanently The original building still exists today and has been restored and maintained as part of The Jockey Club Rooms, which were re-built and expanded in the 20th century
An integral part of Newmarket High Street, the Rooms embody the link between the town of Newmarket and The Jockey Club, which remains as strong as ever to this day. It is home to one of the finest collections of equestrian art to be found anywhere in the world, with tours available to the public through Discover Newmarket.

Olympic Gold medallist Sam Quek might have put her own sporting career behind her, but the ex-hockey star is bidding for success on one of the biggest stages again today - as a racehorse owner.
Quek, who is now a successful broadcaster and a team captain on the popular BBC One show Question of Sport, owns QIPCO 1000 Guineas contender Stenton Glider along with husband Tom Mairs and his mother Jane.
Not only does the filly boast a VIP owner, she is also named after a famous bicycle invented by Quek’s husband’s great grandfather and was only bought at auction because the number on the box the filly was stood in was the same as the date of birth of the TV host’s mother-in-law.
Lifelong racing fan Quek, 34, made her first foray into outright ownership with her husband Tom and his mother Jane when they purchased the filly from the Newmarket sales in 2021, having only previously been involved in low-level syndicates.
Bought for just £35,000 – a bargain in Flat racing terms for a horse with Group race potential - Stenton Glider has already made waves in her two career starts to date for trainer Hugo Palmer Winning on debut at Chester last September before producing a fine second in last month’s Group Three Dubai Duty Free Stakes at Newbury has earned the daughter of Dandy Man a shot at the big time today. Quek, who earned a team gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics as part of the Team GB women’s field hockey side, is unable to attend today due to Eurovision filming commitments.
But she said: “We’re all really excited. I’m hosting the Eurovision turquoise carpet and it’s at exactly the same time unfortunately! If I could put myself in two places at once, that would be my magic power for the day.
“There’s a tinge of disappointment on my side in terms of that, but I’m obviously very excited to be doing the Eurovision carpet We’ve sat down thinking about every possibility, but logistically it just can’t be done.”
Representing the family instead will be Quek’s husband Mairs, who revealed that
he will be ready on the phone to report back to his wife in Liverpool.
He said: “Obviously we’ve had some brilliant sporting days within the family and I just seem to surround myself with very successful females! It’s hugely exciting and I could never have dreamt of owning a horse who was running in a Classic with a fighting chance. I know there’s some real good quality in the race, but we’ll see how it goes If the horse was to run well, I’m pretty sure that Sam’s phone would blow up and she’d find out the result pretty quickly!”
The pair bought Stenton Glider to have a horse to watch near their home in the North West and Quek explained: “We both absolutely adore Chester races, so the plan was to get a horse so we could go down and enjoy the occasion. We’d hoped we’d get a winner one day – as it turned out she won on her debut there
“She’s our first runner in a Classic and it’s on a huge weekend with it being the Coronation of King Charles III We’ve also entered her in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, so it’s really exciting.”
Explaining how the horse came to be named after the ‘Stenton Glider’ – a bicycle used at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam - husband Mairs added: “I was selling a business at the same time that my mum was selling a holiday home, so I thought we could join forces and get a horse and name them after something special. She’s always had a dream to have a horse called Stenton Glider, because that is the name of a bike that her grandad invented “Stenton is her maiden name and he invented bicycles with the drop down handlebars. I believe they were used in the Olympics and they went on to have a huge impact, so that’s how the filly got her name. Luckily it turns out she has wheels just as good as the bike!”
But while Stenton Glider’s name is certainly deliberate, Mairs admits that he and his family stumbled upon the filly at the Newmarket sales by complete accident
He continued: “We were just looking for a colt who could hopefully get to a rating of something like 80 and would be suited by Chester. When we got to the Newmarket sales that was very much the plan, but everything just kept getting bid out of our budget. There was one horse who was in a box and the number on that box was my mum’s date of birth, so we said ‘sod it!’ and we had a go on her.”

In addition to the titles, prestige, and prize money, the 2023 classic winning owners will also receive a photography commission of their winning horse from renowned portrait photographer Tom Shaw. Shaw, who has photographed some of the world’s biggest sports stars, photographs horses in the style of legendary equine artist George Stubbs. The idea was born during a late summer drive in the Cotswolds where the evening sun gently raked across the idyllic countryside, mirroring the backdrops that Stubbs often used in his paintings.

Richard Hannon insists it would be a ‘life goal’ for football super-agent Kia Joorabchian should he taste glory in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas with Mammas Girl, who is reported to be looking a ‘million dollars’ ahead of her Classic assignment at Newmarket on Sunday (7th May)
In what has already been a whirlwind start to the season for Joorabchian and his Amo Racing Limited operation, the daughter of Havana Grey will bid to turn it up a notch by securing him a breakthrough Classic success on her return to the Rowley Mile.
Although Joorabchian, who has been responsible for the transfers of current Premiership football stars
Philippe Coutinho and Willian, among others, is used to plying his trade with the biggest football clubs he is yet to sample a domestic victory at Group One level.
After making a winning a debut at the track over seven furlongs at the track in October Mammas Girl advertised her Classic credentials with a resounding success back over course and distance on her return in the Group Three Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes on April 19th
And on the back of that success Hannon insists they have all got ‘her to beat’ in the mile prize, which the Herridge handler claimed back in 2018 with 66-1 chance Billesdon Brook.
Hannon said: “This would be exactly the shot in the arm that will create something that Kia will never forget Racehorses like this and days like this bring you something money can’t buy. You can’t come into it with millions of pounds and just buy a Guineas winner
“Kia has had bad horses and good horses and he has invested heavily in the sport. It is important people like him get success. This would be like a life goal for him and it would be a nice story.
“I think this filly has an awful lot of scope and arrives in the Guineas with a perfect track record
“Nobody could see Billesdon Brook coming, but this filly it wouldn’t be a surprise as she has won a Group Three very well and they have all got her to beat.”
With neither Meditate or Tahiyra, the two fillies above Mammas Girl in the betting, yet to be seen this season Hannon feels that adds more in the favour of his exciting prospect, who he remains confident will see out the mile trip given her latest finishing effort.
He added: “We’ve not seen anything of the first two in the market this spring and she has the advantage of a run and she will improve massively for that run going into the Guineas
“There is only one way to get match fit and that is playing matches. She actually had a little haematoma on her thigh in February and we lanced it but that got infected so that slowed us up for between a month to six weeks so that wasn’t ideal timing-wise.
“She wasn’t there in her coat when we went to the Nell Gwyn but she looks a million dollars now as she is there in her coat I thought she would run very well but I didn’t think she would win like that
“I was surprised she won going away as she did as she is by a sprinter and out of a mare by a sprinter Other people have said it will be doubtful if she gets a mile but she didn’t look like she was stopping to me
“I don’t think the trip will be a problem as she wasn’t stopping in the Nell Gwyn She doesn’t pull and they will go faster in the Guineas which will help her. She looks like a Group One filly.”
Despite only getting one run into Mammas Girl as a two year old Hannon was always confident she would develop into the smart filly she has become after giving off all the right signs from an early stage.
Hannon said: “I’ve always liked her and I thought she was a Queen Mary filly She then got sore shins and never really got her act together so we gave her a bit of a break over most of the summer then we got her back in October.
“We thought she would go well and she won very well If ours win first time, they are usually pretty good.
“She won first time out there but she is a big, long striding rangy filly and so it is probably not the ideal track for her
“But she handled it very well the other day again and that is what good horses do They can handle pretty much anything you throw at them.”
Both Billesdon Brook and Night Of Thunder, Hannon’s 2014 QIPCO 2000 Guineas winner, suffered defeat in their respective trials before going on to Classic glory, however he believes if any horse is capable of changing that statistic it is Mammas Girl
He added: “Billesdon Brook got beat in her trial, as did Night Of Thunder It helped move them along and they all improved significantly on their trials She doesn’t have to improve as much as they did. Hopefully she can buck the trend.
“I’m delighted she has won her trial as it confirms she is a very good filly If you have beaten everything that is put in your way you go into a Guineas with your chest out.
“When they haven’t been beaten you can’t put a ceiling on them and until that day comes we don’t know what her limits or capabilities are, hopefully they are endless
“She has got a nice pedigree but she is not by a whizz kid stallion out of a celebrity mare but she has every right to be there and deserves a lot of respect.”
Everyone has their favoured place to watch a race in progress, and while not one for being overly superstitious Hannon intends to return to the same spot at the Rowley Mile where he watched Billesdon Brook storm to victory in the race five years ago.
He said: “When you walk through the grandstand there is a television on the right near where all the food outlets are and there is a little cubby hole there and that is where I watch from
“I stand in the cubby hole and move over to the television when the race is off That’s where I watched her win the Nell Gwyn and that is where I watched Billesdon Brook win her Guineas
“I was with Tom Ward, my former assistant, when Billesdon Brook won the Guineas. I stood there with my mouth open and Tom said can you look happy as you have just won the 1000 Guineas!
“That is where I watch a lot of the races now and that is where I will probably watch this race unless I get dragged out to watch it live.”
Victory for Mammas Girl would reward the work of a lot people behind the scenes but none more so according to Hannon than senior head girl Emma Christian, who over sees the day-to-day running of his other yard Everleigh.
He said: “Emma has worked for us for 25 years and she has always been a big mate of mine. She runs the yard down there at Everleigh and she is doing an amazing job.
“She is the epitome of someone in your inner sanctum that is utterly central to everything we do here. She is totally committed to the firm
“Emma is coming to the Guineas and she has a new outfit especially for it If she wins, it will be one of the best days of her life.”
Mammas Girl might represent the best chance Hannon has of securing a second QIPCO 1000 Guineas success, however he believes that in the twice raced Powerdress he has another ’dark horse’ that is capable of running well at a big price
He said: “Powerdress is a gorgeous big filly and she is effectively a bit of Billesdon Brook. This filly under the radar. She ran a super race against the colts at Newmarket last time.
“She was very big going into that race and she had not run since winning as a two year old on her debut at last year’s Craven meeting.
“She just blew up coming out of the Dip but she was the last one of the bridle. She will probably come on a stone for that She is a dark horse in the Guineas and she could run very well
“Her owner Martin Hughes (owner) is keen to have a go at it and I’m behind him as I think he is right to roll the dice.”
By Graham ClarkRACE DESCRIPTION: Run over a mile and one furlong, this contest for fillies who are four-year-olds and older is a Group 2 contest and will attract some of the best around this season. Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s official rating reflects the weight that they must carry, in a Group 2 all runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form. In this case, 9st is the mark, although any runner which has already won a Group 2 race will be issued with a 3lb penalty and any winner of a Group 1 contest is given a 5lb penalty to shoulder

Preference is for PROSPEROUS VOYAGE, who clearly goes well fresh (narrowly foiled in 1000 Guineas on return last year) and should appreciate this slightly longer trip With The Moonlight arrives at the top of her game and looks sure to make a bold bid to concede weight all round, whilst chief French raider Life In Motion also warrants plenty of respect.

2022: CACHET (IRE) 3 9 0 James Doyle 16-1 (George Boughey) 13 ran Hood worn by No 4. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No 9.
Stewards Note:
FAIRY CROSS: Following its run on 19/4/2023 it was reported that the horse hung left handed.
OLIVIAMARALDA: Following its run on 23/9/2022 it was reported that the horse maybe needs a quicker surface.

TAHIYRA looked very good when comfortably accounting for Meditate in the Moyglare and is selected to prove too strong for her old rival again, although Aidan O’Brien’s filly was well suited by the step up to 1m in the Breeders’ Cup and may get a bit closerthis time. The fact Remarquee still looked far from the finished article in the Fred Darling raises a few doubts about how she’ll handle the Dip but she must be highly talented and is third choice ahead of Dream of Love

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
